Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Even as the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has inducted his son Aditya Thackeray in state cabinet while taking back NCP’s rebel turned loyal Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister, he has deferred allocation of portfolios to newly inducted ministers. A media report states that the decision has been bypassed in view of differences that surfaced in the Nationalist Congress Party over the allotment of key ministries. At present, Thackeray and six ministers are handling all departments among themselves.

The report published in Free Press Journal claimed that a section of NCP leaders and newly sworn-in ministers took strong objection to party chief Sharad Pawar’s decision to pick up Anil Deshmukh for the politically sensitive Home department. They were furious as Deshmukh, who was elected from Katol seat in Nagpur district, had made up his mind to join BJP in the run-up to the assembly election.

Although Deshmukh changed his mind in the last minute and stayed with NCP, some leaders feared that his appointment as home minister will send a wrong signal in the rank and file. His proximity with a few BJP leaders may cost NCP heavily in due course of time.

Party insiders said that the high command was not keen to make Ajit Pawar the home minister as his outburst against officers may attract criticism. However, his supporters say that Ajit will be an effective home minister who can exploit his skills to consolidate NCP position across the state.

An NCP minister, who took oath on Monday, told FPJ: “Deshmukh’s selection for the Home department neglecting veterans such as Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil and Dilip Walse-Patil had stunned the legislators.

In the past, Deshmukh had looked after portfolios including food and civil supplies and culture but never handled any key portfolio.

His appointment as home minister would not have helped the party to grow and consolidate. Therefore, it was conveyed in strong words to Pawar that Deshmukh should not be considered for the Home Minister.”

He informed that Pawar will talk to party MP Praful Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and senior minister Jayant Patil and a couple of other leaders about the concerns raised by a section of leaders and may reconsider Deshmukh’s appointment as home minister.

Furthermore, NCP spokesman Nawab Malik, who was sworn in as cabinet minister, strongly opposed to take charge of Excise Department citing that he was interested to handle a people-centric department such as Labour. Malik conveyed to party bosses that he wanted to use his ministerial position for NCP’s growth and not to make fortunes.

He also brought to the high command’s notice that he would not able to devote more time for party work if he had to look after Excise department where he had to focus on transfers and promotions and respond to controversies over illegal sale of illicit liquor.

Moreover, former assembly speaker Dilip Walse-Patil supporters were angry for him being considered for the Labour department and not for Home or Finance departments.

“Walse-Patil as the minister of power had been credited with the revival of sector and he is known for his administrative and legal skills. By making him Labour Minister, the party would make injustice on him,” the party functionary said.

Rajesh Tope, who comes from the Marathwada region, is keen to handle Public Health department and not the Food and Drug Administration.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena and Congress had finalised the allocation of portfolios and discussed it with Thackeray. The parties said there were no differences in portfolio allocation and left the decision to Thackeray for releasing the final allotment.

Drivers, conductors will get weekly off, bonus, overtime, and other perks

Nagpur: In a New Year gift, drivers and conductors of Aapli Bus will get salary of Rs 5000. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to provide salaries of city bus drivers and conductors in accordance with Minimum Wages Act. The move will burden the civic body with Rs 1 crore every month.

According to an agreement negotiated with operators of Aapli Bus service, employees will get salaries as per rules, weekly off, 15 days paid holidays per year, bonus, overtime payment and other perks. This will hike salaries of bus drivers and conductors to the tune of around Rs 5000.

The decision was taken in the Transport Committee meeting held on Monday. The meeting was attended by Deputy Municipal Commissioner and Transport Manager Rajesh Mohite, Labour Officer Arun Piprude, Administrative Officer Ravindra Pagey, Mechanical Engineer Yogesh Lunge, Acccounts Officer Vinay Bhardwaj, Sukir Sontakke; Neelmani Gupta of R K City Bus Services; Parekh of Hansa City Bus; Sadanand Kalkar of Travel Time; Shekhar Admane of Unity Security; Sanjay Kumar Singh of SIS and others.

Chairman of Transport Committee Narendra Borkar told mediapersons that NMC was committed to solving the issues concerning the drivers and conductors of city bus service. Accordingly, some decisions were taken in a meeting called to discuss the demands made by the employees in a memorandum submitted to Borkar after he took charge of the Committee chief. The employees had warned of chain hunger strike from December 30 and also threatened not to issue tickets to the passengers from January 1, 2020. “So far, drivers and conductors were getting work for 26 days in a month. Many employees were working overtime but were still not paid for the same. Now, we have decided that the employees will get salary for 34 days if they do overtime for four days after regular 26 days,” Borkar said.

Borkar further said that in case of action against a staffer, he used to remain suspended for six months. After that he would be allowed to resume his duties after paying penalty following the enquiry. Now, the bus operator will not be empowered to suspend a staffer if any passenger is found travelling without ticket. A committee comprising Suryakant Ambadekar, Chief of DIMTS; Ravindra Page, Administrative Officer; and Arun Piprude, Labour Officer, will be formed to enquiry. The amount of ticket not issued to commuter will be recovered from the conductor concerned within 15 days and he will be allowed to resume his duties, said Borkar.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: As the last day of previous year touched it’s final destination of dusk, the night gradually transformed into glittering shine in Nagpur to accord a rousing welcome to New Year 2020

Thanks to the joy and revelry that percolated through cold breeze in the city, the citizens displayed the spirit of celebration that certainly surpassed the cloudy day and shivering night. As the clock ticked 12, even the rain God obliged to give a showering applause to the new year.

While the people gave way to the celebration and let loose their exuberance, Nagpur police ensured that there should be no turbulence. Right from the ‘hotspot’ Futala lake to many surprise check joints, every nook and corner of the city had men in khaki, rightfully on duty!

As a result most of the bars in the city that usually remains crowded, reportedly ran the show empty seated on 31st night. “It’s the routine feature every year.

The fright of being caught under breath analysers is enough to keep booze lovers away from bars and public places. We couldn’t even match our daily business for this simple reason,” said a pub owner operating out of plush locality in Nagpur.

However, the police not only ensured the peaceful celebration, but they actually displayed it too! The cops also accorded floral greetings to the citizens and as a friendly gesture they presented roses to the commuters at busy squares.

Cabinet expansion: Is it ‘different’ or ‘daring gamble or ‘time-tested politics’?

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The Cabinet expansion undertaken by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has sparked unending talk on various aspects. The exercise is being dubbed “It’s different.” “A daring gamble.” “Time-tested politics.” And so on.

The Maharashtra Cabinet expansion on Monday saw induction of 36 ministers. NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s nephew, Ajit Pawar, took oath Deputy Chief Minister, Uddhav’s son Aditya becoming Cabinet Minister and 34 other leaders from Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress getting berth in the ministry.

As far as three partners of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Congress and NCP stuck to old guards as veteran leaders of both the parties became ministers with exception of one or two. From Nagpur district, NCP’s Anil Deshmukh and Congress’ Sunil Kedar found place in the expanded Cabinet. Another senior leader of Congress, Dr Nitin Raut, was inducted in Uddhav Thackeray Cabinet at the time of government formation. All these three ministers are old guards.

Sanjay Raut gets ‘taste’ of Pawar politics:

“It will take 100s of births to understand Sharad Pawar” or ” Sharad Pawar taught us how to form government with minimum MLAs” were the statements of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress’s Maha Vikas Aghadi’s Man-of-the-Match Sanjay Raut made few days ago. But, ironically, Sanjay Raut has ‘failed’ understand Pawar in this birth itself. Sanjay Raut, who played the most crucial role in formation of this Maha Vikas Aghadi is not only miffed with everyone but he also chose to skip the swearing-in ceremony on Monday. MLA Sunil Raut, brother of Sanjay Raut, who was promised a berth in the Cabinet was not in the list of those who made it yesterday. This is Sharad Pawar, Mr. Raut! No need to be surprised if it was Pawar who must have insisted on dropping Sunil from entering the Cabinet.

“Mr. Raut, you could have met Pawar 3 times in a day during those “Minimum Common Programme” days, but where are you now? Also heard your brother is ‘thinking’ of leaving the party. Tell him not to do so, as it will finish his career,” is the talk now..

Uddhav’s daring!

To leave the likes of Diwakar Raote, Ramdas Kadam, Deepak Kesarkar, Tanaji Sawant, Dr. Deepak Sawant & Ravindra Waikar from the Cabinet and giving newbies a chance to prove themselves is a daring move in itself. A total of 16 Ministers from Sena are sworn-in till now. Out of which 3 are Independants and one Abdul Sattar is an import from Congress. Two Ministers are Thackeray’s themselves so it leaves only actual 10 Shivsainiks who are Ministers today. What was BJP offering? 18 Ministers and plus 2 in the Centre????

But to leave veterans like Raote & Kadam is a gamble which one thinks should go in Uddhav’s favour. All the 6 Ministers dropped. A close source said, Uddhav was tired of their attitude especially the senior people. It is not a good sign for you if you advice or try and overpower/defy Uddhav’s decisions in Sena. Raote and Kadam just did that, and plus many of the 6, mentioned above, are allegedly very corrupt and Uddhav wanted to give a facelift to the party.

Ahead of the Maharashtra Cabinet expansion, the Shiv Sena had said that old guard is not ready to give up ministerial berths for young leaders and they should come out of the illusion that the state government cannot do without them. Without naming anyone, an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ also underscored the need for coming out of the psyche that one should get only a lucrative portfolio in the government “to serve the state or country”, and questioned the intention of such leaders. Government departments like relief, rehabilitation, information technology, skill development, school education and health are also important, but nobody is ready to take charge of them, the Sena had alleged, without naming its allies.

Dissent brews in Congress:

According to reports, the Maharashtra cabinet expansion on Monday has left several Congress MLAs, including senior leader Prithviraj Chavan, upset after they were not inducted.

Alleging that the party loyalists have been ignored, six Congress MLAs — Chavan, Naseem Khan, Praniti Shinde, Sangram Thopte, Amin Patel and Rohidas Patil — reportedly met senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge last evening and shared their concerns, reports said. On Monday, Congress leaders Ashok Chavan, Dilip Walse-Patil, Dhananjay Munde, Sunil Chhatrapal Kedar and KC Padvi were sworn-in as ministers in the Maharashtra cabinet.

NCP MLA quits:

Hours after the cabinet expansion, an NCP MLA from Beed district resigned as he called himself “unworthy of politics”. Majalgaon MLA Prakash Solanke, however, clarified that his decision was not related to non-induction. “I have apprised NCP leaders about my decision to step down. I will meet Legislative Assembly Speaker (in Mumbai) on Tuesday and hand over my resignation letter. My resignation has nothing to do with the Cabinet expansion,” he was quoted as saying by a news agency.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: After completion of one month in office, Mayor Sandeep Joshi on Tuesday interacted with media and highlighted the works done and to be done in his tenure.

Joshi said he interacted with citizens during his “Walk and Talk with Mayor” initiative and sought suggestions and complaints from them. “Over 100 Suggestions and Complaints boxes have been set up at various places in city. Through these boxes, citizens submitted their suggestions and complaints. The complaints were resolved zone-wise in ‘Complaints Redressal Camps’ organised across the city.

Major decisions in past one month:

Menace of private buses: Admitting the fact, the menace of private buses operating on city streets, the Mayor elaborated, “To work on the menace of private buses, Pravin Datke Committee is constituted. The committee will study and submit its report.

Tentatively we have identified six spots at various directions where these buses would stop in the outskirts. They would not enter into the city. NMC bus will operate to and fro these spots wherefrom it would pick up the passengers. Every care of the safety of the passengers would be taken.”

Encroachments on footpaths: Joshi said that NMC will not only clear encroachment on footpaths but will also repair them. At most of the places the condition of footpaths is very bad.

It needs to be attended, Joshi made it clear. It will be a part of encroachment-removal drive. “When I took over as Mayor, I gave priority to anti-encroachment drive,” Joshi said.

Public toilets: It was a long pending demand of people as they don’t have a place where they could ease themselves. “We are starting these public toilets to be run at 87 places and will be maintained by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).

It will start from Wednesday. We are thankful to Petrol Pump Dealers Association who are helping us a lot. At the same time there will be 57 urinals to be run by Corporation. The responsibility of cleaning the urinal will be bestowed upon the nearby shop.

A board will be displayed near that shop about putting responsibility on it,” pointed out Joshi and added there will be mobile toilets for female to be called as ‘She’. One will remain at Kriplani Point while others will operate at market places.

Dog sterilisation: The Mayor further said that dog sterilisation would be another priority. Dealing on statistics about the number of strays of dogs, he explained, “There are 90,000 stray dogs at this juncture. We have sterilised only 10,000. With this speed, the dog population would cross 1.5 lakh next year. It will create lot of problems. We can’t kill them and we don’t want to. We calculated the amount to be paid for sterilisation which was too much.

We discussed the issue with some NGOs, who came forward. We have to spend Rs 12 crore. But it will be done on warfooting. NGOs will monitor, plus the procedures will be performed under camera so that nobody should get involved in any scam.”

Open plots with garbage to be seized: The Mayor said that action would be taken against open plot owners where garbage is dumped. “There are several open plots people bought and did not do any construction work on it. These plots have become garbage dumping points.

Being in the middle of the city, it gives a wrong picture to everybody. We have decided to take action on such plot-owners.We will give them notice asking to clean the area, a board in that regard would be put on display at the plot.

A particular time limit would be provided. If the owner fails to do the cleaning work, NMC will seize the plot. I along with Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar are working on it. In fact the first action we have decided to take on the open plot in front of Radhe Mangalam Karyalaya near Padole Square.”

Khau Galli to get functional from Jan 9, Gadkari to inaugurate: Finally, Nagpur Municipal Corporation has decided to start ‘Khau Galli’ near Gandhisagar lake, in front of Raman Science Centre. The Khau Galli will start functioning on January 9, 2020 when Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate, informed Joshi.

He said, “Structure is ready near Raman Science Centre. Somehow things did not work and the structure remained unused. We got 78 applications and 32 stalls will be allotted. We will try to keep variety of stalls so that it can attract people.”

New Year revelry: Hoteliers play ‘less quantity trick’ to earn moolah over ‘online food orders’

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: As Nagpurians celebrated dawn of New Year albeit under cloudy and numbing chill, the hoteliers had a field day and earned moolah. Following rain and shivering cold, many of the revellers preferred to celebrate New Year indoors mainly in warm, cosy homes. They ordered their choice of food from various hotels. And the hoteliers, taking advantage of the rush, played ‘tricks’ to earn easy money. A number of customers were supplied less quantity of food as compared to regular orders placed on other occasions.

Though the chilling weather failed to dampen spirit of revellers on the New Year’s Eve, the online food orders placed by many of them spoiled their New Year celebration to some extent as the food quantity was compromised. Owing to unprecedented weather which marked the last day of the year, most of the Nagurians booked their roofs as the revelry spot with music, booze and of course, food! However, the food orders placed online were reportedly found much less than the usual and thus ruined the mood.

While some found barely 6-7 small sized pieces of chicken inside a Butter Chicken ‘handi’ costing between Rs 500-600, some were shocked to discover 750 gms of Biryani packed in a small box and placed in standard size box. Thus the quantity of Biryani was compromised by the hotelier. On being contacted, the owners of respective food outlets refused to acknowledge the less quantity served as claimed by the revelers on the pretext of prestige of their hotel.

Deprived of food in sufficient quantity, some revellers had no option but to place couple of more orders. Some welcomed the New Year with “half tummy”, the young ones specially went to bed waiting for their food.

Speaking to Nagpur Today, Tejaswini Nayak said, owing to chill coupled with showers, she along with her family and friends decided to stay back at home to cherish the memories they made last year. But the celebrations soon went to south as the food ordered by them was found low in quantity.

“We were around 12-15 people at the roof top. Though we had snacks and starters in place on the New Year’s Eve, we were thinking to order main course at the stroke of the midnight to welcome the year 2020. We had ordered two Butter Chicken ‘handies’ from a Sadar based prominent hotel. However, soon as the order arrived we were taken aback as both the ‘handies’ had roughly around 6-7 small sized pieces of chicken compared to regular large size 12.

On being informed, the hotel staff ruled out such possibility. Left with no options we had to place new orders by pitching in more money. While others kept on waiting in the zest of the New Year, my younger siblings fell asleep before the next order could reach us,” said Tejaswini.

“I simply can’t understand or judge the mentality of the hotel owners serving online food deliveries on New Year’s Eve. Do they assume that the person who placed the order is drunk and can’t differentiate? Or they want to capitalize the situation of the New Year to earn extra bucks by compromising the quantity? We ordered snacks for “obvious” purposes.

However, were quite pissed to find only couple of chicken nuggets in it. We simply barged inside the food outlet which was couple of kilometres away from our home, and showed ordered food to the owner. Following which he provided us the standard quantity,” said Vaibhav Shigane.

Mohammad Aquib had travelled miles to cherish an end of the year 2019 along with his friends and family. He had placed orders for special Biryani between 750 gm and 1 kg. However, he informed Nagpur Today that the standard box which usually has the Biryani had another smaller box placed in it which had Biryani and a sweet.

On being informed the respective hotel, the owner claimed that the order has been placed right, if he has problem with the order feel free to weigh the box.
