Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: After a clean sweep of all the eateries existing on the road opposite Futala Lake, both the civic body and MahaMetro are all set to float the redevelopment work on the ground. For the same the stretch of road facing the lake will be closed for traffic. As per the Rs 112 crore redevelopment plan, the tunnel will come in place of the existing road on which there will be a viewers’ gallery and space for restaurants and parking opposite the lake. The NMC and MahaMetro would soon lay diversion of traffic passing through this road.

Now the traffic will be moved from Bharat Nagar Square to Telangkhedi Hanuman Mandir Road. This road is already reserved in city’s development plan and hence it would be developed as an alternative to Futala Lake road.

As per the plan by MahaMetro the new 18 meter road will be developed and remain in place even after Futala Lake project is completed. It will be a cement concrete road. A road currently exists from Bharat Nagar Square till the compound wall of Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). The compound wall will be demolished to construct the new road. The new road will begin from the compound wall, and stretch 500 meter to join the road connecting Ravi Nagar Government Quarters to Telangkhedi Hanuman Mandir Temple at the MJP office.

The Telangkhedi Hanuman Mandir road is currently 9 meter wide, but marked for widening to 18 meter in the DP. Therefore, MahaMetro will also widen this road.

The only hurdle in the development of the new road is that the land on which it is proposed belongs to PDKV. MahaMetro officials said NMC has sent a letter to PDKV requesting advance possession of the land to commence construction as soon as possible. “NMC will take the land on lease from PDKV immediately. Later, PDKV will have to give the land anyway as it is a DP road,” he said.

RSS plans mass movement opposing women’s entry into Sabarimala Temple

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is planning to launch a mass movement over the raging controversy on entry to womenfolk in the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala. The mass movement will be by women and for the women. The Supreme Court in recent verdict, lifted ban on entry of menstruating women in the Sabarimala Temple and given rights to them to perform puja in the temple. The apex court ruling gave rise to intense unrest. Protests erupted as devotees and many communities barred entry of women in the Ayyappa Temple. Several organisations of women also opposed the verdict.

The Left Front Government in Kerala led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan decided not to file review petition neglecting the vociferous demand of society. The State Government decision added fuel to the unrest.

The RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, during his Vijayadashami speech had said that the Supreme Court verdict, allowing women of all ages to enter Kerala’s Sabarimala Temple, did not account for traditions accepted and followed by the people for years. “The religious decisions should be left to Dharmacharyas,” he had stated. “The situation arising out of the recent verdict on Sabarimala temple shows the predicament. “The legal verdict has given rise to unrest, turmoil and divisiveness in the society in place of peace, stability and equality,” he said asking why only Hindu society experiences such repeated and brazen onslaughts on its symbols of faith. The nature and premise of the tradition that has been accepted by society and followed for years was not taken into consideration,” Bhagwat said.

Bhagwat’s speech clearly reflected that Sangh will work on this matter. The RSS’ women’s wing Rashtrasevika Samiti, run by women, works for women on many issues. Rashtrasevika Samiti has started working on creating a mass movement over the Sabarimala Temple issue. Rounds of meetings are taking place. Strategies are being planned. The Union Minister Smriti Irani had recently stoked a controversy by her statement on allowing women in the Ayyappa Temple. A few days back, Smriti Irani had graced a women’s programme held at Reshimbagh-based Smruti Bhavan in city.

In view of the developments, the Rashtrasevika Samiti has drawn plans to launch mass movement on the issue by organising a host of meetings across the country.

CM urges civic bodies to create more revenue sources

Nagpur: “The biggest challenge in the 21st century is that of existence. In the next 10-20 years, the global temperature is going to be increased by two degrees. The effect of this rise in temperature could be seen in the form of drought and water shortage. To overcome this peril, measures to lessen emission of carbon would have to be initiated. Considering the booming population, the sewage and transport system would be polluting factor in the cities. To avoid this, decentralisation of sold waste management and sewerage is necessary. The Municipal Corporations should create more and more sources of revenue and focus on assured and sustainable development in cities,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday.

Fadnavis was speaking after inaugurating 18th Mayors’ Conference held at Vasantrao Naik Agriculture Research Centre (Vanamati) here. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari presided over the programme. Other dignitaries present on the dais include President of Mayors’ Council and Mayor of Mumbai Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, Mayor Nanda Jichkar, MLC Jogendra Kawade, MLAs Sudhakar Deshmukh, Sudhakar Kohale, Divisional Commissioner Sanjiv Kumar, District Collector Ashwin Mudgal, Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Thakre, Deputy Mayor Deepraj Pardikar, and others.

At the outset, the event was inaugurated by Fadnavis by lighting the traditional lamp. He said, “Pollution is created most by the developed nations. However, a developing country like India has marched towards assured and sustainable development. But it is necessary to shift the transport system on electric and bio fuel. The system will reduce the pollution to great extent. The atmosphere in cities is being polluted by sewage and transport system and now focus should be on reducing carbon emission,” Fadnavis stressed.

“From now onwards, cities will not be provided lands for dumping grounds. However, land will be made available for solid waste management process,” the Chief Minister said and added garbage dumping has been barred in cities. The civic bodies should have agenda for reuse of sewage water by using new technologies and a source of revenue for them as well. The civic bodies should accord priority for solid waste management, zero percent garbage, garbage separation, fertiliser generation out of garbage etc” he said.

A day after ‘Mission Demolition,’ citizens expect grand facelift at Futala Lake

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: A day after ‘Mission Demolition,’ Futala Lake wore a deserted look. The usual swarms of young boys and girls enjoying moments at Futala waterfront, rush of cars and bikes parked haphazardly, honking and other activities came to standstill. What is seen is a fleet of trucks loading debris of shops, eateries demolished by Nagpur Improvement Trust on Thursday.

Once a buzzing spot of the city, has fallen silent. The hotspot for youths and families and not to mention the ‘lovebirds’ sneaking to secluded places slyly will now be without the food joints that catered to the crowd as favourite hangouts. NIT bulldozed the kiosks, mostly selling pizza, ice cream and other food varieties near Futala Lake. Out of curiosity, there were many who visited Futala Lake on Saturday, just to witness aftermath of demolition. Many seem to have upset with NIT’s decision. Many welcomed the move as it has ‘development’ to offer. Now, NIT plans to set up a musical fountain at Futala Lake while Maha Metro will construct a tunnel and viewers gallery.

While speaking to Nagpur Today, Tanmay Gupta, a student who visited the spot with friends expressed his anguish saying this is just waste of funds. “It was the only spot to hang out with friends and family and that too for entire year. Apart from the broken wall on the Air Force end I hardly find any uncertainty in Futala. Rather than investing funds here, the administration should have looked for other places, which need their attention. If they wanted to give ca facelift to this place they at least could have waited for one work to finish,” said Tanmay with anger in his face writ large.

“It was very sad to know that the city’s Chowpatty has been demolished. One more hangout spot of Nagpur has been destroyed by the officials. I’m not sure even I can relate with their meaning of transforming the city. Whenever my cousin from Mumbai and Delhi used to ask me, “What do you even have any place to chill?” to which I never hesitated to reply that, Futala Lake. But now I think, I have to say that do not even bother coming Nagpur! We don’t have anything for a hangout,” lamented Suyash Sethiya.

“For better tomorrow we have to sacrifice some things today and that to for our own benefits. Even though demolition process has destroyed the place for now but has remarkable things to offer in return,” told Kinjal Bansod, an IT professional to Nagpur Today.

She further added, “Being the Mini Marine Drive of Nagpur, Futala is one of the busiest places with teenagers hanging around. Now since the restaurants nearby have been demolished, I believe it might offer a grand space for people to enjoy the beauty of the sunset. Moreover there would be a place for parking as well. Earlier, with the commuters passing by, which often created chaos; I believe we do not have to worry about that problem. Personally I feel great with the administration’s decision as it is for improvement only, so it is acceptable.”

“It was the only romantic spot for families and couples to hangout. The scenes of sunset with your loved ones was the part I will miss about this place. Even from the inside of Panino and Domino’s, it will melt your heart. However we have heard some big talk from the officials on paper. However it will be pleasing to see if the replacement is as good as what we lost today or else it will turn another example of abuse of power,” said Mohammad Aquib, an engineer.

Nagpur: A play was staged on the inaugural day of Padmagandha Pratishthan Lekhika Natya Mahotsav on October 26th, at Scientific Society Hall. The three-day event, which was inaugurated by Dr Deepak Khirwadkar, Director SCZCC, in presence of litterateur Shubhangi Bhadbhade, Mala Kekatpure and others. The play brought to the fore an important issue of how sometimes a casual approach to actions, which we may perceive as normal can land a person in deep trouble.

This play was about a Martyed Colonel’s better half Jaspreet Kaur Gill, having a reputed family background, who maintains a business while dealing with her two kids. Attendant Gunita, was a young girl, whom she regards as a relative to do house hold work.

One day, an outsider in the attire of an elderly Sardarji Devendra Singh goes to their house, searching for leased premises. Jaspreet, subsequent to conversing with him on different issues, gets persuaded about him being a genuinely needy person and consents to lease her outhouse. Inconvenience begins when Devendra Singh begins desired action, exploiting Jaspreet’s simplicity and leading to terrorist attacks in the vicinity with the ultimate aim to eliminate Jaspreet, whose spouse had killed several terrorists, two of the dead happening to be siblings of Devendra Singh.

All the scenes particularly the ones with jaspreet’s jail term and mental torture, the detailed interrogations and the final arrest of Devendra Singh all have been beautifully portrayed. Urmila Deshpande as Jaspreet was beautifully portrayed.

ACP Suri (Nikhil Tongle), Lady cop Aparna Lakhapure, Mayuri Tongle as Gunita, Vinay Modak as Devendra Sing1bb bbh impressed the audience as well.

The great parking exploitation of Nagpur Airport!

$

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur is yet to get most of the facilities that a truly international airport has, but exploitation in the name of ‘progress’, which was always there to some degree, has gone into 4th gear now.
Wonder if it is the first sign of privatization?

Yesterday evening, I was late going to the airport to pick up my 5 year old twin granddaughters who had accompanied my husband to Nagpur from Mumbai. They had already collected their bags and were coming out. So I asked them to wait there as I had already entered the airport premises and would collect them from ‘Arrivals’ directly. They were waiting there, but the Security guard would not allow them to get into the car nor load the luggage.

“Go to the parking, pay parking charges, load luggage there and then go home” he instructed us.

When I requested him to let them get in quickly as both the girls were unwell with fever and cold, he said they could get in with the driver but I would have to get out and walk to the parking! And finally that’s what we had to do – drive the car around to go to parking; my husband had to transport the trolley there, we had to pay parking, and then emerge! What a needless farce!

Nagpur is the only place where Ola and Uber will cost comparatively more since they have been designated to pick up customers after paying airport charges and parking which is then loaded into your ‘fare’.

But flouting of all rules, including safety rules continue being flouted by VIPs – politicians as well as bureaucrats, police seniors etc.

As you enter the airport proper, there are 3 lanes of traffic on the road which has ‘Departure’ and ‘Arrival gates’. I have learnt from the Airport authorities that the innermost and first lane is to be kept vacant at all times for ‘Emergencies’. (In case fire, bomb scare or any other mishap, if ambulances and police cars have to respond fast and be effective they MUST have a drive way free for quick access to distressed people.

But one always finds VIP vehicles not just collecting their passengers, but even parked there till arrival of aeroplane. You can find 2 – 3 cars parked there at most times.

Thus even safety rule flouted to gratify VIP ego and pampering.

All rules in the name of safety – and for profit? – are meant only for commoners.
