Nagpur: In what is said to be one of the biggest seizures in the recent cases of railway ticket black marketing in Nagpur, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Central Railway, on Sunday raided an office of travel company and seized records of e-tickets and regular tickets worth Rs 65 lakh. The squad has arrested a travel agent, identified as Shatrughan Singh (38) from his Manewada-office.

The latest action is part of the RPF’s nationwide crackdown on e-ticket agents termed as ‘Mission Tatkal’. RPF squad, under senior divisional security commissioner Jyoti Kumar Satija and inspector Virendra Wankhede, raided Singh’s office. Shoot tigress T1 as last resort, says HC as it refuses to modify orders

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

NAGPUR: Dismissing the last plea filed by a Mumbai-based organisation – Earth Brigade – and wildlife enthusiast Dr Jerryl Banait, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court has declined to stay the order by Forest Department to tranquilise and if necessary shoot the problem tigress T1 as a matter of last resort.

A division bench consisting of Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Shriram Modak, refused to stay or modify the shoot-at-sight order and made it clear that it had attained finality at the Supreme Court. The petitioners repeatedly sought to omit the option of eliminating T-1 as a measure of last resort, but High Court permitted forest authorities, to take a final call, if it develops into threat to human life.

Through an order passed by Wildlife Warden-cum- Principal Chief Conservator of Forest of Maharashtra, A K Mishra on September 4, the Forest Department officials were directed to make all attempts to tranquilise the tigress, which is roaming in jungles near Pandharkawda in Yavatmal district, with its two cubs; and in case it develops threat to human life, then only take steps to eliminate it.

Opposing the plea of the petitioners that in no case tigress should be permitted to be eliminated; through an affidavit, the respondents have refuted the contention of the petitioners that the respondents have diluted the procedure while implementing the impugned order and pointed out to the court that the impugned order has been affirmed by the HC on September 6 and subsequently by the Supreme Court without any change. The impugned order was passed by the Chief Wildlife Warden, under Section 11 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Adv Shreerang Bhandarkar appeared for the petitioners. Adv Kartik Shukul (State Government and Forest Department) and Adv Mugdha Chandurkar (National Tiger Conservation Authority) represented the respondents.

After spending Rs 6 cr, teams fail to trap tigress

The Forest Department has spent around Rs 6 crore on the ongoing T1 tigress tranquilising operation so far. Interestingly, the teams and around 200 persons involved in the operation have not even seen the menacing tigress at least for once, informed reliable sources.

The department launched the tranquilising or shooting operation as last option from February, following shoot-at-sight order and court verdict. In haphazard manner it deployed its own teams and police sharp-shooters for the purpose. The operation continued for full summer season, when the chances of the problem tigress getting tranquilised by firing required dart were more. The jungle becomes dry enabling the teams to get a clear vision. There is also scarcity of water inside the territorial jungle for not getting the opportunity for the beast to run towards water body after being fired with dart, sources pointed out.

The whole favourable period was lost gradually but A K Misra, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), failed to intensify the operation as is being done now. The eight teams are finding adverse situation with growth of lantana weed, grass, bushes, scrubs and trees as well undulating areas in jungle. Now, 200 persons along with the teams, led by Nawab Shafath Ali Khan, veterinary doctors, police sharp-shooters, STPF jawans, field staff, forest labourers and others are conducting full-fledged operation from September 12. The tigress has killed 13 persons so far and one elephant has also killed a woman this month.

The department experimented thermal drone, power paraglider, five elephants, dog squad, etc., but in vain. It spent money on giving compensation to relatives of deceased, petrol-diesel for a fleet of over 50 vehicles, payments, travelling allowance, food, drinking water arrangements and other purposes. The sources estimated the expenditure on the operation from February till today at around Rs 6 crore. Nawab is charging nothing, sources added.

Sources pointed out that the job would have been accomplished at any moment in summer had the department deployed services of Nawab, an outsider shooter, in the start. The monsoon operation involved more expenditure without producing any tangible results.

During a visit to the affected villages, base camp between Sarati and Loni villages and HQ of Misra in Pandharkawda, on Sunday forest officers failed to tell about the cost of operation saying that it can be analysed only after finishing the job.

Now, paraglider, dog squad withdrawn from operation

After withdrawing five elephants and thermal drone, the Forest Department has now withdrawn power paraglider and dog squad from the tranquilising operation. Sources said the paraglider developed a mechanical fault and it also created noise.
There is a fear that the villagers would burn the paraglider, costing Rs 15 kept at base camp, if the tigress kills anyone. Therefore, it has been shifted at a safe place. The dog squad was kept for one week but it was found ineffective in tracing the beast.

Nagpur: Union minister Smriti Irani bats for a ban on women to Sabarimala. Speaking to ANI, this is Irani’s bizarre explanation: “I have a right to pray, but not a right to desecrate. I am nobody to speak on the Supreme Court verdict as I’m a serving cabinet minster.

“But would you take sanitary napkins soaked in menstrual blood into a friend’s home? So why would you take them into the house of God?” she said.

The Supreme Court Tuesday said that it would hear on November 13 petitions challenging its Sabarimala verdict allowing women of all age groups entry into the temple.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S K Kaul told lawyer Mathews J Nedumpara that it has already passed an order with regard to listing of petitions on November 13. Nedumpara was mentioning the petition filed by National Ayyappa Devotees Association.

he Union textile minister was speaking at the “Young Thinkers” conference organised by the British High Commission and the Observer Research Foundation in Delhi.

“I am a practising Hindu married to a Zoroastrian. I have ensured that both my kids are practising Zoroastrians, who can go to the fire temple and pray,” she said. Irani recalled that when her children were inside the fire temple, she had to stand outside on the road or sit in the car.

“When I took my newborn son (to the fire temple), I would give him at the (temple) entrance to my husband and wait outside, because I was shooed away and told not to stand there,” she said.

NMC needs Rs 500 to tide over crisis but gets Rs 150 crore only from State Govt

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: As against the demand of cash-starved Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the State Government has released Rs 150 crore as special grant to the civic body to tide over the financial crisis. The funds are likely to be used for releasing stalled payments of ongoing developmental works in the city and clearing bills of agitating contractors. The Rs 150 crore relief evoked mixed response with some terming the fund as peanuts against the demand of Rs 500 crore that could have brought the financial position on the right track.

With mounting obligations, the cash-strapped civic body administration developed cold feet in meeting the committed expenditure including salaries, pension grants, electricity, raw water bill, payment to Orange City Water, petrol, diesel, telephone bills, security, repayment of loan, garbage lifting, etc.

The NMC contractors have been agitating for more than a week demanding their dues which are pending since March 2018. The civic body has also to make its contribution towards development works as well as to maintain public transport system efficiently.

The cash crunch situation came to such a pass mainly due to haphazard planning and exorbitant budgetary provisions without giving a thought to revenue recovery scenario. This year too, highly lucrative Budget was presented. The provisions made for various heads have been exhausted. No tenders are being floated nor work orders are being issued. Obligations on various counts have touched to over Rs 500 crore. Half of the amount is due to the contractors.

After receiving the special grant of Rs 150 crore from State Government, the NMC coffers would have Rs 250 crore at its disposal. With this amount, the NMC administration will have to do a balancing act in distribution of pending dues. Moreover, the civic body has also to fulfil development assurances as currently the NMC is constructing cement roads, over bridges and other development works.

NMC does not have its own resources to continue with the development work at this pace. Most importantly, salaries of employees and pension grants have to be distributed before Deepawali. The Finance Department of NMC had suggested that the local body should request State Government to release a special grant of Rs 500 crore in view of financial crisis.

NIT’s parking plaza in Sitabuldi shuts down, hotel starts in its place, slyly!

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The vehicle owners, hassled by parking woes, were expecting a sort of relief as media in city had reported that the NIT operated Parking Plaza at Variety Square in Sitabuldi was all set to reopen soon. However, the hopes of relief expected by the vehicle owners, especially the car owners, were dashed as the parking plaza has reportedly been given to a group of hoteliers to run their hotel at the place.

It may be recalled that Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) had constructed the parking plaza at the centrally located Variety Square in Sitabuldi on BOT basis. In view of parking woes increasing day by day in city, the parking plaza could have been a relief for car owners visiting the area. But the multi-level parking plaza which was NIT operated had been shut since past one and a half year due to no operator coming forth for its maintenance or faulty design.

Now, it is learnt, the builder of this parking plaza has reportedly handed over the place to Gangakashi Group to run their hotel. A recent raid had brought the hotel in limelight.

The Second Capital City of Nagpur has been witnessing parking menace especially in busy market areas such as Sitabuldi as well as Dhantoli and Ramdaspeth. Car parking, many times haphazard, was creating traffic problems at many places. Faced with the tricky situation, the NIT had planned to construct the car parking plaza adjacent to Cinemax at Variety Square on BOT basis. Tenders were floated. But the NIT’s plan of multi-level parking plaza found no takers. Finally, the NIT gave tender to one of its ‘favourites’ but ‘controversial’ builders to build the parking plaza on BOT basis.

The said builder constructed the parking plaza in such a flawed manner that no big car could enter the plaza. According to NIT sources, the builder deliberately made such faulty design so that the parking plaza would be a “flop” and a way could be paved for other business.

According to NIT sources, the operator of the parking plaza was given freedom to fix the parking charges. The operator was given a contract for three years to run the parking plaza. The operator was to pay NIT Rs 7.51 lakh per year. The operator paid Rs 5 lakh in advance. After completion of paper work between the NIT and the operator, the parking plaza was supposed to function. A ‘promise’ of arrangement for parking of 72 cars was doled out. But even after lapse of one and a half year, the parking plaza was not started.

The NIT has reportedly allotted 400 sq ft place to the builder for constructing the parking plaza for his business. The builder in turn handed over the place to Gangakashi Group for running a hotel. The hotel was raided a few days back.

Car owners would have relieved over the parking arrangement at parking plaza and were ready to shell out the parking fees. But all their hopes were dashed with the running of a hotel at the parking plaza.

Nagpur: Even as #MeToo movement has blown the B-town beyond proportion with the names of many bigwigs like Anu Malik, Sajid Khan, Nana Patekar, Alok Nath, Vikas Bahl, Subhash Kapoor cropping up every single day, the storm seems to be far from over.

Recently Mahima Chaudhary was in Orange City and while in an interview with Nagpur Today she talked about the ongoing #MeToo movement “. She said, “I support the moment as it gives a freedom to talk about the wrong doing of people. With this moment it gives us the support of other woman who has gone through the same phase and it make the men think about their attitude towards woman. I had to go through hundreds of situations where I felt uncomfortable as they think it is just cool to ask for somethings privately. It is a double-edged sword and we as women were scared before all men while interacting and working with them. We have been wary of every man so now if a man is wary of woman so now we have reached a state of equality. You have to have that respect towards woman. Before this movement we would brush things aside and tried to forget things that happened to us but now I am sure we will be able to address them and tell them that just stop.”

She also shared some of her #MeToo moment she had to face while working in industry. She alleged that she had a rough experience working with film director Subhash Ghai who was the one who gave her a break in Bollywood. “After my First film ‘Pardes’ I was bullied over the work agreement with the director and he said to his fellow directors and friends to stop giving me work. At that time as he had a strong influence in industry everyone would listen to him and follow his words due to which I was left alone with no work and a bad image. What ever I earned with my first film just collapsed like a wall within no time. I had to start all over again as what ever he gave me with Pardes was finished.”

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Irrespective of the statement by City BJP President Sudhakar Kohale asserting there is no plan to change Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the Ruling Party Leader, the top party leadership, it is leant, has decided to go ahead with the plan. Accordingly, soon after the conclusion of the 18th Mayors’ Conference being hosted by Nagpur Municipal Corporation on October 27, BJP could undertake the exercise to change the three office-bearers.

After coming to power in NMC for the consecutive third time, the BJP had decided to give one post or another to its 108 Corporators. The party had decided nominate four Mayors in the five-year tenure. It means each Mayor would have tenure of 15 months. By this logic, the current Mayor Nanda Jichkar has not only completed her tenure but still holding the post. Moreover, the sordid episode in which the Mayor took her son as Personal Secretary on US voyage has left the party embarrassed. The party is now contemplating to replace her. The party is also likely to replace Deputy Mayor as well as the Ruling Party Leader in NMC.

Since the current Ruling Party Leader Sandeep Joshi has been appointed Chairman of State Small Scale Industries Corporation and has status of Minister of State, the Ruling Party Leader will also be changed. The winds of change have started to blow. The next Mayor from West Nagpur could be Varsha Thakre. The mantle of Deputy Mayor could fall on Rajesh Ghodpage while the Ruling Party Leader has been decided to be from Central Nagpur. The post may go to the senior Corporator and former office-bearer.

The change of guard is likely to be effected soon after the Mayors’ Conference being hosted by Nagpur Municipal Corporation on October 27.

Earlier, the City BJP President Sudhakar Kohale refuted the report in this regard and asserted that there is no move to make changes at all. But it seems, the top BJP leadership has decided to go for the change.

Nagpur: Expressing concern over dengue havoc gripping the city with every passing day, the Chairman of NMC’s Medical Services and Health Committee Manoj Chaple has sought help of voluntary organisations in curbing the disease. “Citizens are panicky over the dengue mainly due to lack of awareness. It is not possible for NMC employees to visit every household for creating awareness on dengue. In this situation, the voluntary organisations can come forward and cooperate with the civic body in curbing dengue,” Chaple said.

A meeting to review dengue outbreak was held on Tuesday at Panjabrao Deshmukh Hall of Standing Committee in the Civil Lines office of NMC. The meeting was attended among others by Deputy Chairman of Medical Services and Health Committee Vijay Chutele, members Lakhan Yerawar, Vishakha Bante, Gargi Chopra, Medical Officer Dr Pradeep Dasarwar, Health Officer (Sanitation) Dr Sunil Kamble, Dr Vijay Joshi, Dr Narendra Bahirwar, Malaria and Filaria Officer Dr Jayshree Thote, Kanak Resources and Management’s Kamalesh Sharma and zonal officers of all 10 zones.

Chaple took stock of the situation arising out of dengue spread. He also reviewed the working of employees deployed by NMC for dengue related work. “The dreadful atmosphere is due to lack of awareness among citizens. Hence need is to reach information regarding dengue to the people. Only proper awareness can defeat dengue disease,” Chaple stressed and added, the voluntary organisations should come forward and extend a helping hand to the civic body. Awareness could be created by many ways including staging of street plays and through other ways.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The traffic mess between a stretch of road between Mayo Hospital and Sunil Hotel is likely to ease to a great extent as Nagpur Municipal Corporation has undertaken widening of the road by 18 metres. Even as it is a welcome decision to douse the blaze of heavy traffic, the move could jeopardise livelihood of many residents as they will have to migrate to other places. The road widening threatens to displace the residents staying there for years.

The NMC administration has already completed the survey. The Gandhibagh Zone office of the civic body has also started issuing notices to the project affected residents. Through these notices, the projects affected are offered extra FSI and TDR. If the affected residents reject this offer then they would be given compensation in proportion of the land they would lose for the project as per the new Land Acquisition Act.

The residents and shop owners are worried about the consequences this road widening project. “We are familiar with the traffic woes that occur in our area. However, this project will relieve the problem but has put question mark in front of the residents as far as livelihood is concerned.

Rather than creating such chaotic situation for residents and vendors in our area the civic body should think some other alternatives. The ongoing metro initiative will ease the traffic. Once the metro starts, it will eventually ease the traffic on the said road. So why give trouble now?” Ejas Khan, who owns a food stall in Mominpura, told Nagpur Today.

However, Ejas is not only the one. It is expected that 450 properties would suffer losses due to the work. Within 15 days after receiving the notices, the project affected residents have to reply it. However, he also mentioned that he along with many other people are yet to receive a notice.
