Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The guardian minister of Nagpur, Chandrashekhar Bawakule, met with the Project-Affected Persons (PAPs) of Gosekhurd on Saturday morning, where he acceded to two of their demands. Accordingly, Independent legislator Bachu Kadu and his supporters withdrew their agitation, saying they would watch the government’s moves. “If it fails to keep its word, we will take the agitation to Bawankule’s doorstep,” threatened Kadu.

Bawankule had agreed to start all utility services immediately and most importantly, agreed to maintain the water level of Gosekhurd dam at less than 243.85 metres, which would prevent flooding caused by the release of water. A joint committee, which includes the PAP and government officials will be formed. This committee will file their report within a fortnight, after which the government will take a final decision. But the discussion with Bavankule on Saturdya, however, was acrimonious.

Many villagers shouted at the minister and furious debates raged to the point that Bawankule was forced to expel some of the villagers from the meeting. The PAP, led by Kadu, had occupied the MLA hostel in Nagpur and were agitated as the government was refusing to give them a hearing. Infuriated at their neglect, they seized control of the hostel on Friday. They yanked out the water tank from the terrace and threw it on the ground. The district collector and regional commissioner were away and the hostel became centre for agitation

  • The Gosekhurd project on Wainganga River, in Maharastra’s Vidarva region, was approved in 1982 and launched by former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1984
  • The project is still incomplete and there are allegations of gross irregularities in rehabilitation of effected people, financial embezzlement
  • Over 1 lakh people affected by construction of the dam
  • Authorities have made no proper arrangement for rehabilitation of the oustees.
The oustees are demanding that water damming should begin only after they are fully rehabilitated and given their rightful compensation

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Police Commemoration Day 2018- In memory of those who gave the supreme sacrifice in the service of India was held today on Oct 21 at Police line Takli Parade ground in Nagpur.

Honouring the memory of our valiant police martyrs

Every year on October 21, the nation remembers the sacrifice of 10 police personnel who laid down their lives defending the integrity of our motherland at Hot Springs in Ladakh. These men were killed in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops that had violated Indian territory in Aksai Chin.

Since mid-1959, the frontier had suddenly become active due to transgressions by Chinese troops. On October 21, a police party led by Karam Singh, a deputy central intelligence officer, was ambushed by Chinese troops equipped with automatic weapons and mortars. Indian policemen, who were armed only with rifles, held their ground till they were overpowered by the hostile force, resulting in the death of 10 and capture of nine.

The entire nation mourned the martyrdom of these policemen, who were the victims of an unequal encounter with Chinese troops on Indian territory. The bodies were handed over by the Chinese on November 13 and were cremated at Hot Springs at 8am the next day. Police forces assembled at every district headquarters across the country in ceremonial parades to mourn the sacrifice of these valiant soldiers.

It was in 1960 that the heads of all of India’s police organisations decided that every year, October 21 would be observed as Police Commemoration Day throughout the country.

This year, the Prime Minister will dedicate a national police memorial at Chanakya Puri, New Delhi, to the memory of all such policemen who laid down their lives at the altar of duty. Goa Police too, has been serving the people of the state selflessly and unflinchingly.

In light of this, it would be a fitting tribute to honour our own heroes on Police Commemoration Day, namely late head constable Balaram B Shinde, and late police sub-inspector Abhishek Sher-Ali Parvez Gomes.

Shinde was born in Sarawali, a small village in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district. After obtaining his secondary school certificate in 1969, he was recruited as a constable in the Goa Police. He was promoted to head constable in 1985 and went on to serve at all the state’s important police stations. In 1999, Shinde was assigned to the police outpost at Cortalim. This was during the course of an agitation by a few citizens against the upcoming Meta Strips factory at Sancoale.

Although he had the confidence of the people and was capable of handling them, it was at around 4pm on March 4, 2000, that a mob circled the Cortalim police outpost and locked a few of his colleagues into one of the rooms. Shinde, who was on duty at the time, resisted the mob and tried his best to pacify them. The mob, however, assaulted him and inflicted life-threatening injuries that rendered him unconscious.

A few well-wishers came to his aid and informed senior police officers of the incident. The valiant officer was immediately moved to the GMC, Bambolim, where he remained in a coma till he breathed his last on April 23. Gomes, a resident of Margao, was directly recruited as a sub-inspector of the Goa Police on September 7, 2006. When he and constable Maruti Dhupwadkar were on traffic duty in Ponda on the morning of March 16, 2013, they noticed a speeding truck approaching Amigos Junction in Curti, and signalled it to stop. The truck driver, however, continued to speed towards Borim, nearly knocking down the sub-inspector.

With his suspicions raised, Gomes jumped onto his official motorcycle and proceeded to chase down the truck. Soon enough, he managed to overtake the vehicle and once again signalled to the driver to stop. The driver still refused to pay heed, and knocked down Gomes and his motorcycle instead.

The sub-inspector was dragged for about 20 metres from the spot of the collision, sustaining grievous injuries, including a mangled leg. He was rushed to a hospital in Ponda and then shifted to the GMC, Bambolim, where he succumbed to his injuries. It was clear that Gomes was killed intentionally while discharging his duties.

The Goa Police will remember these two brave sons of the soil during a homage parade at the police headquarters, Panaji, on Sunday. Both will be accorded a Guard of Honour in the presence of their families.

To learn more about the sacrifices made by various police personnel in the line of duty, I appeal to all the citizens of Goa to visit the website of the Indian Police www.police.gov.in that was launched by the Prime Minister in December, 2015 The writer is the director general of police, Goa.

The girl has admitted that she had love affair with Piyush who allegedly pestered her to develop physical relationship on the promise of marriage. The survivor told the police that while she was four months pregnant and Piyush and his family continued to refuse marriage, she decided to file a complaint against him on September 24. The Ambatkar family got hint of the decision and rushed to Sonegaon police station to thwart the complaint, the girl said.

Pandurang Ambatkar and brother-in-law Raghatate allegedly met the survivor on the Sonegaon police station premises and deterred her from filing a complaint with a promise to perform her marriage very next day. “Piyush’s father and brother-in-law later met my parents and convinced them to send me to VIMS Hospital for medical check-up. They admitted me in the hospital on the pretext of low haemoglobin and sedated me through intravenous infusion. While I was dizzy, they took my signatures on some documents claiming it to be the hospital formality. As I fell unconscious, medicos aborted my fetus,” the survivor charged.

As the survivor countered them soon after she regained consciousness, she was abused with casteist remarks by Ambatkars and Raghatate. The survivor then took help of MNS women’s wing president Sunita Gaikwad in Chandrapur and filed a complaint with Sonegaon police. Virendra Singh’s Mumbai visit triggers speculations over his transfer

Nagpur: The babus in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) were agog and expecting the Municipal Commissioner Virendra Singh, who showed his face on Sunday after a month long leave, would take over the affairs of civic body on Monday. But the babus were surprised to see the top NMC boss leave for Mumbai in the wee hours of Monday itself. Now, it is learnt, Singh would resume his duty on Tuesday.

Following Singh’s arrival in city on Sunday after over one month’s leave, speculations were rife whether he would take reins of NMC or transferred. His joining on Monday would have put all the rumours at rest. But the Municipal Commissioner leaving for Mumbai on Monday morning itself sparks fresh rounds of debate. The talk of Singh being shifted gained steam. It is learnt that Singh wants to change his cadre and go to Rajasthan where his wife is posted as an IRS officer. Singh’s move for the change in cadre owing to domestic issues is being seen as legitimate.

According to sources, Virendra Singh went to Mumbai to attend an urgent meeting called by Chief Minister on October 22 at Mantralaya. He may resume his duties formally on Tuesday. It may be mentioned that Singh was on leave for over a month due to sudden demise of his mother. However, the Ruling Party in NMC as well as Opposition party Corporators are not happy with the functioning of Singh. Being an ex-Army man, Singh wants to implement ‘military-like’ atmosphere in NMC. Soon after taking over the charge in NMC, Singh had put the ‘lethargic’ babus on notice. His surprise visits to many departments has created tremors among the higher officials and lower rung employees as well.

The ‘unhappy’ Ruling Party and the Opposition Corporators had reportedly demanded the Chief Minister to replace Singh citing their repeated friction with him since past six months over one issue or another. It is no secret the NMC is in bad phase of financial crisis. Corporators are unhappy as they are not getting funds for development while local body does not have enough funds even to pay salaries of the employees and meet committed expenditure.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: When the doctors at a government hospital are down with a major disease the plight of the patients could well be imagined. The scenario is dreadful, to say the least. The Mayo Hospital in city is going through the ordeal. Around 55 patients in this hospital are being treated for deadly dengue. Due to excess number of dengue patients in the 30-bed Ward, many patients are sharing the same beds. What is making the situation awful is 20 resident doctors and interns themselves are in the grip of the disease. So many doctors affected by dengue shows the shabby working of the hospital administration. Currently, two doctors are ICU.

The hostels where the resident doctors and interns stay are breeding grounds for many deadly diseases. Ggarbage, accumulated water and filth is common picture at the premises of the hostels. Except on Gandhi Jayanti, the premises are not cleaned. The dengue causing mosquitoes breed in swarms at these filthy places.

According to the resident doctors, the drainage line of the hostels is always choked. Turning the situation more horrendous is a sewer line that passes through adjacent to the hostels. Taking the advantage of the situation, swarms of mosquitoes invading the hostels and wreaking havoc on the doctors.

The State Government report itself has stated that 4667 people were hit by dengue this year out of which 18 have lost their lives. The fact was confirmed by Union Health Minister J P Nadda in Delhi on Saturday.

Another dismal scenario could be seen at Employees State Insurance Corporation hospital in city. In this hospital, the nurses have been found busy in ECG work rather than serving the patients. The reason: The post of ECG technician is lying vacant since days and months. Now, nurses are being forced to carry out work of ECG technician leaving the needy patients at the mercy of god. The ECG technician was transferred to another place but the post was not filled up since then.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The former Union Finance Minister and rebel BJP leader Yashwant Sinha on Monday said that he would give a thought of campaigning for Congress candidates in the coming Assembly elections in four states if the party sends a proposal in this regard.

Sinha reached Nagpur on way to Amravati to attend a programme and was speaking to media persons. He said if Congress invites him for defeating BJP in the Assembly elections being held four states then he was ready to accept the invitation. Criticising the policies of Central Government, the sulking BJP leader targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi again. “In the past four years, nothing has been done for people. In his every speech, Modi criticises Nehru-Gandhi family. The protocol of not delivering political speeches in government functions is not being followed. During the rule of this government, every region of the country has gone backward. The working style of Modi has endangered the country’s economy and sovereignty of the autonomous bodies,” he charged.

“The United States of America had in 2008 witnessed unprecedented financial crisis following collapse of biggest bank – Lehmann Brothers. India is passing through the same situation. Anger is brewing among people and it would be reflected in the next Lok Sabha elections. Defeat of Modi will be achieved not by any Mahagathbandhan but coordination among regional parties. I am ready to campaign against Modi for saving the nation from perilous situation. Assembly elections are being held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana next month. Congress or other Opposition parties invite me to campaign then I will definitely accept the invite and campaign for them,” Sinha said.

PMO is running the country:
The former Union Minister said, “All powers rest with PMO and it is sunning the affairs. The Finance Minister, Home Minister, Defence Minister, External Affairs Minister are powerless. The fact is proved by past happenings. The Finance Minister was not aware of demonetisation. The Home Minister was not consulted before imposition of President’s Rule in Jammu and Kashmir. The External Affairs Minister cannot meet Foreign Secretary of Pakistan. Defence Minister is kept in dark about Rafale deal,” he said.

Yashwant Sinha was accompanied by BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, AAP leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, Congress leader Ashish Deshmukh, and social activist Prashant Pawar.
