NAGPUR: The government at the Centre as well as in the State and leaders of the ruling party have failed to bail out Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) from its financial crisis. The NMC administration and its office-bearers are now frustrated over the fact that the Corporation is being disowned and is forced to surive on its own. Development works in Nagpur have come to a standstill and contractors are agitating to recover their pending dues.

When the red bus operators went on strike from Thursday, the NMC paid Rs 1.5 crore each to the bus operators on Friday and assured to pay remaning dues in installments after three days. The buses started running after this deal. It is said that hectic efforts were made to end the strike to escape the wrath of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has called a meeting of the NMC on coming Sunday.

When it came to negotiate a deal with the bus contractors, the NMC suddenly remembered Bunty Kukade, the chairman of NMC’s transport committee who has been constantly neglected by the administration. The NMC had initially not taken the strike seriously but from Friday morning it started pressurizing Kukade to end the strike at his level. Looking at the circumstances, Kukade talked to the agitating contractors and succeeded in cracking a deal. When the contractors raised the issue to pending dues of around Rs 13 crore, the NMC administration avoided making any assurances by sayinComing g that the due will be paid.

As per sources, the NMC administration knew that once the buses started plying on roads, it will be difficult for the contractors to go on strike again in the near future. The bus operators had called the strike after numerous warnings to the administration. Moreover, the strike ended in 26 hours without achieving the results.

Secondly, the NMC administration didn’t want to face the wrath of Nitin Gadkari, who is known to scold the officers if his directives were not followed. Therefore, the NMC made all efforts to end the strike of the bus operators.

What will happen in Tuesday?
The NMC paid Rs 1.5 crore each to three red bus operators on Friday. This amount was used to clear salaries and dues of petrol pump owners.

The NMC has promised to pay remaining dues in installments after three days, starting last Friday. Therefore, there are chances that coming Tuesday may again witness strike-like situation if NMC failed to pay the revenues generated from ticket sales to the three contractors equally.

Modi government catered to self-interest in Rafale deal: Priyanka Chatruvedi

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

NAGPUR: Targeting the Centre on the 2015 deal to purchase 36 Rafale fighter jets from France, the Congress on Sunday accused the Narendra Modi government of ignoring the national interest and catering only to its self-interest.

It quoted from the 2016 annual report of Dassault Aviation and a press statement of Reliance Defence Ltd, the local partner chosen by the French firm to meet its ‘offset’ obligation under the contract, and alleged Prime Minister Modi had made the announcement of “off-the-shelf” purchase of the fighters in Paris after paying an “extra amount”.

“Rafale is a scam and the government is in scam. Indians feel deprived while the BJP ensured that crony capitalism thrived. Instead of protecting India’s interest we have the Modi Sarkar protecting their self-interests,” Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said in a Press conferance in Nagpur. She was joined by Youth Congress leader Vishal Muttemwar who along with Pradeep Maitra of Press club of Nagpur was present.

“The prime minister announced off-the-shelf purchase of 36 Rafale aircraft in Paris on April 10, 2015 for euro 7.5 billion (Rs 1670.70 crore per aircraft which is Rs 60,145 crore for 36 aircraft,” Chaturvedi said.

India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in 2015 for 36 Rafale fighter jets in ‘fly-away’ condition.

The president of the ruling BJP, Amit Shah, on Friday rejected allegations of corruption in the Rafale deal, saying credence should be given to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement.

Shah said, Sitharaman has said the base price of Rafale fighters negotiated by the government is less than what was finalised by the previous UPA dispensation.

But the Congress leader said when the international bid opened on December 12, 2012 for Rafale jets, the price negotiated by the UPA government was Rs 526.10 crore per aircraft for 126 aircraft.

As per the UPA deal, the price of 36 aircraft would have been Rs 18,940. Chaturvedi demanded an explanation on why an extra amount of Rs 41,205 crore of the public money is being paid for the jets.

She claimed that by announcing the deal in 2015, Modi had violated the mandatory “Defence Procurement Procedure”.

She asked why the prime minister and the defence minister were averse to placing the details of the commercial purchase price before Parliament.

The government has said that a secrecy clause in the 2008 pact between India and France prohibits it from disclosing the pricing details in the purchase of the Rafale fighter jets.

Experts describe the Rafale as a twin-engine “air-dominance” aircraft. In French, “Rafale” means a gust of wind.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: With the recent rains leaving the lush green effect on trees lined up along Nagpur streets, there’s more to it than meets the eye! Behind the swaying leaves and bouncing branches is the pain that many of the trees in busy areas has to suffer.

As if choking of roots through concretization and excessive pollution was not enough, the trees are now bearing new tyranny of mankind. Most of the trees are now being used as support to endorse commercial purpose of many so called professionals and advertisers. Moreover, various services and announcements are being made through trees, and how? The bill boards and sign boards have been mercilessly nailed into these trees.

While most of us are still aloof to this emergent situation that has reached an alarming level, an aware citizen and one of our readers Avinash Gowardhan has shared few pictures narrating the ordeal of such trees.

In one of the pictures that Gowardhan shared, a tree near Laxminagar at Aath Rastaa Square is seen nailed with a display board showing name of a cost accountant.

In his mail sent to Nagpur Today, Gowardhan shares, “As a responsible citizen, we should never attach any objects to trees with nails, screws or anything that penetrates the outer bark. It can damage the cambium, the area just beneath the bark where cells rapidly divide and increase tree girth. It also can wound the phloem, the cells that carry nutrients from the canopy to the roots; and the cells that transport water and nutrients to the canopy.”

He stated that nailing trees and harming them in any way is an offense under the Tree Preservation Act. Further, using tree for advertisement also amounts to offense under as using public space for advertising, free of cost.
Not only Gowardhan NT too feels that there should be some mechanism to penalize the advertiser to stop this menace.

It’s end of road for Green bus as Scania pulls out of NMC net

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Ethanol-run Green bus service, the ambitious project of Union Minister for road and transport and highways Nitin Gadkari seems to have failed drastically in Nagpur. Scania, the Swedish bus maker company issued its termination notice to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) stating they are not likely to run Green buses from August 13.

While the experts have alleged NMC for maintaining casual approach, some few high operaton cost in running the project.

Ankit Yelekar who works with a private firm expressed his anguish stating, “This was the prominent project, seeking to create ideal environment in local transport. However people more often use personal vehicle, so it won’t be a big issue. When it comes to daily commuters they have enough of options to choose from, nonetheless, Ola and Uber. Eventually they had to shut this project. Sadly good initiative won’t reward you money.”

Punyajeet Chauhan, a student laments, “No wonder lack of administration’s attention cost Green buses its vitality. At the onset they charged more compare to other public transports. I’m not a management student who can give expert comments but one thing is for sure – you should charge more at the beginning. Plus when they knew that high pricing is affecting the choice of commuters, then instead of reducing price they continued with their ways. This clearly shows how serious were NMC officials when it comes to keep such a big project floating.”

Kaustav Chatterjee, environment expert and founder Green Vigil Foundation, says, “Implementation of bio-fuel is certainly a boon for the environment and in absence of Green buses that it will have adverse effects on surrounding. With sugar cane and corn being the main constituent, unlike petrol and diesel, ethanol is a renewable source of energy which has upper hand when it comes to creating ideal environment.”

“With ongoing construction of metro and highways, vehicles emit more carbon after getting stuck in traffic. Poor marketing and casual approach of NMC officials cost us Green bus. NMC could have educated people that by using Green buses we are contributing towards environment. People are often inclined to choose pocket-friendly rides compare to luxurious ones. A high price of the ticket is another reason why this project sank without trace,” he added.

NMC had launched the nation’s first ethanol-run bus in the city and included it into its fleet of local transport in association with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Swedish bus manufacturer Scania. MP Nitin Gadkari had also planned to launch the buses throughout the nation based on the reports of the pilot project which has now failed drastically in Nagpur.

Pune, Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai from Maharashtra were ranked today India’s three most livable places on the government’s inaugural ‘Ease of Living Index’, where the national capital came at 65th place out of total 111 cities.

Rampur in Uttar Pradesh figured at the bottom of the livability index released by the housing and urban affairs ministry.

Chennai has been ranked 14th, while Kolkata did not participate in the survey.
