Nagpur/New Delhi: Doling out a major jolt to Nagpur’s fugitive BJP neta Omprakash alias Munna Yadav, who has been evading police net for past couple of months, the Supreme Court has directed his application to trail court to regularize his anticipatory bail in an assault case in Nagpur.

The Apex Court has directed Yadav to apply for the regular bail in the trial court only. In its ruling, the Apex Court said that since the chargesheet has been already filed against Yadav and accomplices in the said case, it is now upto the trial court to offer regular bail to him. Now Yadav has to file fresh bail plea in the Additional Judicial Magistrate Court.

Munna Yadav and his family, including wife Lakshmi, and sons — Karan and Arjun — was booked for attacking and seriously injuring Mangal Yadav, his sister Manju, brothers — Papa and Gabbar Yadav, and others, on October 21 last year, over a dispute on bursting firecrackers.

Mangal and his kin were attacked with sword, iron rods, sticks and bricks, which left them seriously injured and were admitted to hospital. Initially, the police had booked the accused under sections 324, 325, 147, 148 and 149 of IPC, besides 307, for attempt to murder, before dropping the last offence.

After rejection of his anticipatory bail petition by sessions court on March 15, Yadav knocked HC’s doors challenging the verdict. He earlier withdrew his bail application from the HC after it was about to be dismissed on February 2.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The Rashtrasant Tokdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) will be conducting an internal enquiry of Prof Shoma Sen, who was arrested on charges of allegedly supporting the Naxal movement.

Prof Sen was subsequently suspended by the RTMNU and her retirement benefits were temporarily paused by the university after her arrest. Further action will depend on the report of the enquiry.

It may be recalled here that Pune Police had arrested Prof Shoma Sen on charges of supporting the Naxalites. She was working as English Professor with the university.

Since Sen was serving the post, it was necessary for the university to first suspend to facilitate her arrest. However the process was delayed by the university administration.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor referred to the rule book and suspended Prof Sen. Police too had written to the university regarding her arrest.

The RTMNU has instituted a committee to enquiry into the charges levelled against Prof Sen. It is likely that the university will take further action against her once the committee submits its report.

Nagpur: As a part of Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme of India, when portion of the his salary used to deduct on the pretext of health insurance Vinod Dhoke, who has been serving Khaparkheda power plant, never imagined that he has to run pillar to post for his mother’s chemotherapy despite being one of the beneficiaries of ESI scheme.

“I am wretched due to elude behavior of administrations. Being a cancer patient, my mother has not received chemotherapy for more than 2 months now. My father is seriously ill. What benefit am I getting from the ESI scheme despite every month money is being deducted from my salary in the name of health insurance? asked anguish Vinod Dhoke while narrating his ordeal to NT.

Dhoke has been working at Khaparkheda power plant for last 7 years. His mother is suffering from ovarian cancer for which the treatment is going on at Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Regional Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Nagpur.

Her condition has become worse as for more than 2 months, she has not got Chemo.

Vinod said, “Accompanied with other people I’ve narrated my ordeal to the commissioner during his visit, at ESI hospital last month. The commissioner assured us for the action in next 7 days, but it’s been a month now and nothing has come out.”

The Employees’ State Insurance Scheme of India aims to provide socio-economic protection to the employees in the organized sector. However, despite of claims, assuring to cover events of sickness, maternity, disablement etc to the employees and their families ESI seems unsuccessful when it comes to convey it.

Another person, Girish Totraje, whose mother suffers with breast cancer and is herself, entitled under the ESI scheme, said, “Earlier RST hospital used to give medicines on their own and later they submitted the bills to ESI hospital. But about two months ago, when I went for the Chemo of my mother, they said that because the previous ESI bills were pending, they could not spend on the purchasing of drugs anymore, mainly because they were too costly.”

He said, “My mother has worked at Sundar Biscuit Company at Koradi. This is what she is getting after a service of 24 years. Her Chemo is pending for the last 2 months because the cost for just 1 Chemo is nearly Rs 80,000 and I don’t have that much amount to spend.”

“All the procurement of medicine will be now done by Haffkine from this financial year. We cannot purchase medicines on our own, except for emergency reasons like the one for indore patients, OT etc, under certain limits. We have been asked to summit a list of all the rare and costly drugs to the commissioner. We sent around 5 proposals for the patients who has approached us but could not receive anything yet,” Meena Deshmukh, medical superintendent, ESIC, hospital

“Even we cannot buy the routine medicine for quarter term now because of Haffkine. Also, permission was granted for some medicines whose turnover is less, but that amounts to only 35% of the total drugs required for our patient” she added.

However, when Dr BK Sharma, director RST Hospital, was contacted, he said that no person has been sent back from the hospital.

“It is right that ESI hospital takes some time for the payment clearance but till now no cancer patient was refused for the treatment”, he added.

While the State government has started free chemotherapy centers at district government hospitals to provide hassle-free treatment, the cancer patients referred to Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Regional Cancer Hospital and Research Centre by Employee’s State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital continue to face a grim scenario due to delay in chemotherapy.

Nagpur: The Empress Mall constructed by KSL Industries and Company, which has recently faced action by NMC and various other departments for series of violations, is once again in the news for bad reasons. Recently NMC has declared the place as unsafe for operations. Now two social activists have filed a public interest litigation against the company in Nagpur bench of Mumbai High Court.

In their petition social activists Chandu Lade and Rakesh Naidu have alleged that Empress Mall is producing electricity from crude oil and supplying to the shops.

However, the power distributors Spanco and MSEDCL along with Explosive Deparment has not come cleared its stand on the alleged act by mall authorities, it is learnt that the company had not taken any approvals regarding power generation.

Hearing the petition, Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Zaka Haque has ordered the petitioners to file an affidavit in this regard.

During the last hearing, the petitioners contended that High Court’s order on PIL was not implemented as many loopholes in the mall premises were still not corrected.

In its affidavit filed in High Court, NMC has informed that the civic body has laid the rules regarding examination of fire fighting equipments multi-storeyed buildings.

As per the rules, the investigation report should be filed in prescribed format instead of submitting it in hand-written form. The investigation report would then be duly authorised by a third party who would issue the certificate. The court observed that if the shopping has multiple floors then each floor should be individually inspected.

The counsel for petitioners stated that despite the court orders, NMC only issued notice to Empress Mall authorities. The building has been termed as dangerous on two occasions. As per the rules the building should be evacuated but NMC only issued notice of snapping water and power supply to the building.

Violent Protests : Nagpur’s educationists express concern over students’ loss

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The recent protests by Maratha community over quota demand have rocked the state while paralysing normal life and routine business. Moreover, the bandh led to violent protests resulting in vandalisation of public and private properties.

Amid the panic that grew large among masses and inconvenience faced by business community, the worst sufferers were students who had to miss out on their crucial classes and other academic assignments. Thursday’s bandh was the second time when most of the educational institutes, including private schools and coaching classes, declared holiday on account of Maratha agitation.

While the call for state wide bandh given by Maratha community was effectively seen in various parts of Nagpur it proved dearly to the education fraternity. In the times of heavy syllabus, a day of delay can burden heavily on the course completion. Therefore a loss of one session can be a big deal for a school, college authorities.
Nagpur Today interacted with few educationists who shared their views on the prevailing situation emanated from the bandh call.

Dr P C Pawar, Principal of Dr Ambedkar College said that protest can cause a great academic loss even if it is a peaceful protest. In an educational institution, both teaching and official works are suffered by such events. As the transportation facilities get affected so are the people. Students who come from far places worry about their safety. Schools and Colleges plan their course of education before commencement of an academic session.

But such events badly affect our planning. For the safety and security our students we have to keep the schools closed for a day or two till the issue is resolved. Such kind of protests creates a negative impact on children in many ways as what they see is what they follow.

Hemant Aware, Principal, Government Industrial Training Institute, Nagpur opined that teachers, students have their plans for the day which get affected due to which their studies are compromised.

In Nagpur, though our education department did not issue any order to keep the schools and colleges closed, many private institutions and schools declared a holiday via SMS taking safety of the students into account. As the travelling around the city is affected by the protests students as well as parents fear to send their wards out. Inconvenience due to stranded transportation cause a major problem which pushes our session forward.

Dr BA Mehere HOD Biotech, at Dr Ambedkar college informed that being a teacher we have to suffer more as a day loss is a big deal for us. With exams coming up in the line we have to complete the syllabus of the students and such protests create major problems. It affects our duty and the next thing we know is we are under immense work load and pressure. We have to revisit out plan again and compensate for the loss.

School Psychologist Chaitali Madan said experts also believe that such protests also make major impace on the psyche of children. Some people often take their children to such rallies which could have a negative impact on the child due to the exposure to loud noise and over-crowded conditions. Children might also imitate the behaviour they observe during violents protests. We learn most of the behaviors by observation.

The acts like jumping into the river, forcefully shutting down shops, setting fire to the vehicles and causing all sort of disruptions could have adverse effect on their mental health. Children might consider such aggressive as well as self harming acts as appropriate to get their wishes fulfilled or even get traumatized with such incidents.
