Nagpur: The hard-handed and biased behavior of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials towards the poor and deprived has come to the forefront ahead of C-20 in the Second Capital of the State. While neglecting the basic needs of citizens, NMC officials are solely focused on providing VIP treatment during C20. One such incident has once again highlighted their unjust actions.

Reportedly, the Anti-Encroachment Department of NMC seized the sugarcane juice stall of a poor man on WCL Walkers Road under the Dharampeth Zone and dumped it in an open ground. Rizwan Khan, Roomvi Congress West President, brought this act of aggression by the NMC to light.

The sugarcane juice stall on WCL Walkers Road is owned by Rajesh Jaiswal (40) from Shatri Nagar, Gittikhadan. On Sunday afternoon, officials from the Anti-Encroachment Department of the Dharampeth Zone approached the site and seized Jaiswal’s stall. Jaiswal had recently purchased sugarcane worth Rs 30,000, but NMC officials took his stock and discarded it in an open ground, said Khan.

“Freedom For Creativity, Not Obscenity”: Minister To Streaming Platforms

Nagpur: The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Thakur on Sunday emphasised that the government will not tolerate obscenity or foul language in the name of creativity by streaming platforms or OTT. He also hinted that the government will not hesitate to intervene if someone “crosses the limit.”

“Abusing in the name of creativity will not be tolerated. Government is serious about complaints of increasing abusive and obscene content on OTT platforms. If there is a need to make any changes in the rules regarding this, the ministry will consider in that direction as well,” Thakur told the press in Nagpur.

A streaming media service that provides direct access to viewers via the Internet is known as an over-the-top. OTT avoids platforms like cable, broadcast, and satellite television.

“These platforms were given freedom for creativity, not obscenity or abusing. And when someone crosses a limit, then abusing, rudeness in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all. Whatever necessary action needs to be taken on this, the government will not back down from it,” he added.
Thakur’s remarks come days after Delhi High Court’s scathing remarks about the web series “College Romance”. The court said that the content’s sexually explicit language could influence impressionable minds because it was widely available.

It urged the government to take steps to check the language on such platforms and stated that the series contains “obscene, lascivious, and profane content.”

The judge further said she tracked down the language “so foul and obscene” that she needed to utilize headphones to watch episodes.

Today, in light of an increase in complaints, the Minister explained that the producer must address the issue first.

“After that the complaints are resolved at the level of their association, then most of the complaints are resolved there. When it comes to the level of the government, then strict action is taken at the level of the departmental committee, according to whatever rules are in place,” said Thakur.

“But somewhere complaints have started increasing in the last few days and the department is taking it very seriously. We will think seriously if we have to make some changes on this,” the Minister added.

A petition seeking a new OTT censorship system was denied by the Indian Supreme Court last year. Sujeet Kumar Singh, a resident of Mirzapur, had reportedly asked a bench comprised of Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi to convene a preview committee to review all forms of OTT content prior to its release. The Court stated that such a process was impossible.

Nagpur: Contractors of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) allegedly resorted to power theft while installing decorative lighting for the upcoming Civil20 Inception Conference being held in Nagpur and were fined by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL), a media report said on Sunday.

The MSEDCL detected power thefts at seven locations in Nagpur, the power company stated in a release. The contractors had sourced electricity for decorative lighting from street light poles, it was stated.

The NMC is charged a subsidised rate of Rs 7.51 per unit for the street lights, while the power company charges Rs 13 per unit for a temporary power connection. Hence, the contractors indulged in power thefts, the report said.

The state-owned power company imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the contractors for the power thefts and wrote to the civic body to get authorised power connections.

Earlier this week, the MSEDCL initiated action at Somalwada Square and Civil Lines against contractors under the Electricity Act and recovered Rs 18,630 fine. A similar action was taken at six other places in the city and Rs 30,000 was collected in fines, it was stated.

More than 200 delegates from India and abroad will be attending the Civil20 Inception Conference scheduled to be held in the city from March 20 to 22.

Shockingly, the NMC contractors were found indulging in power thefts for their lighting decorations. Subsequently, MSEDCL swung into action after receiving the inputs and detected power thefts at seven places.

According to MSEDCL, a fine of Rs 50,000 was recovered from the contractors for the power thefts. A letter was also sent to the NMC administration by MSEDCL officials urging them to take authorised power connections for the lighting. So far, the NMC has applied for authorised power connections at 13 places — eight in Congress Nagar division and four in Civil Lines.

Apart from this, new applications have been received by MSEDCL from NMC for electricity connections at nine places. However, the MSEDCL has found that illegal power connections are being used by some contractors for lighting at some places. The state-run power company officials have seized the wires and taken action against those concerned.

Nagpur: With the reports of shabby state of affairs dogging the MIHAN-SEZ, Deepak Kapoor, Additional Chief Secretary and Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation Ltd (MADC) took review of ongoing development works of various companies in MIHAN recently.

Kapoor conducted marathon meetings with MADC officials and took a review of new investments, roads and allied infrastructure of the MIHAN project. In the meeting, Kapoor directed MADC officials to expedite all the ongoing works of development and facilities in MIHAN.

Accordingly, he reviewed Khapri rehabilitation infrastructure work. It was informed that the financial bids have been opened and a work order would be issued soon. He also took a detailed review of other infrastructure development works and various facilities of the MIHAN project including electricity, water, fire, marketing, finance and planning departments.

Kapoor held a detailed meeting Vishal Agarwal, President, Pravin Tapdia, Past President and other members of Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) and Govind Daga, Vilas Kale, Shivkumar Rao from Vidarbha Economic Development Council (VED). Kapoor informed them that he is in discussion with a couple of renowned companies who are interested in investing in MIHAN which would generate huge employment and change the face of the entire region.

VIA delegates suggested promoting MIHAN aggressively at major industrial hubs of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad etc., to which Kapoor positively responded and assured that MADC will work with prominent advertising agencies. This move would highlight the world-class infrastructure of MIHAN, thus, attracting more industries from IT and aviation sectors in MIHAN.

In a meeting with delegates of VED, a proposal was submitted by VED officials, Kapoor directed his officials to pursue the proposal positively. Kapoor also met a delegation of various units of MIHAN including TCS, HCL, AAR INDAMER, DRAL and others. He updated them about the various works related to MIHAN infrastructure being taken up by MADC, which would be completed before monsoon.

MIHAN-SEZ, in the recent past, has been in the headlines for lack of development of basic facilities. Years of neglect has led to the facilities crumbling one by one. On one hand the companies are demanding expansion of facilities and on the other hand, the pathetic MADC officials are making things more complicated. MIHAN is also moving on the lines of Butibori. Companies are coming but the facilities are dwindling day by day, the media reports had said.

Nagpur: Beltarodi police have booked a woman Director of a tourism company for abetting suicide of a man. The accused woman allegedly duped the man and his friends of Rs 80 lakh on the promise of high returns on the investment, police said.

Ashish Manohar Marawar (49), a resident of Safalya Heritage, near Jayanti Nagari, Besa, committed suicide by consuming poison at his house on February 24. The offence was registered against tourism company Director Rajal Mohit Ved, a resident of Agne Layout, Khamla.

According to police, Rajal lured Marawar with 30 percent returns on the investment. Initially, he invested some amount and received returns. The woman again lured him and asked to invest a major amount. As a result, Marawar and his relatives invested around Rs 80 lakh with the accused woman. When Marawar asked for profit, Rajal started giving excuses. She even refused to return the capital investment amount. Marawar was frustrated due to fraud, added cops.

Meanwhile, Sadar police registered a case of fraud against Rajal Ved for defrauding mining businessman Vijay Babulal Khandelwal (50), a resident of Pagalkhana Square, of Rs 29 lakh. Rajal allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh to Marawar to get a bail in the case. She also threatened him that she would deposit the cheque of Rs 80 lakh with the police if he failed to pay the money. Soon after, the woman started harassing Marawar. Fed up with her harassment, he committed suicide.

Bullion, vehicle, cloth markets gear up to welcome shoppers on Gudi Padwa

Nagpur: The Marathi New Year begins with the festival of Gudi Padwa, one of the three and a half Muhurtas of the year. As this is the first festival of the New Year, excitement is visible everywhere. Therefore, there is a possibility that there will be a turnover of Rs 2,500 crore in Nagpur on the occasion of Gudi Padwa which is on Wednesday, March 22.

On this day, buying gold and silver jewellery, a vehicle, a house, electronic materials is considered auspicious. Therefore, there is a possibility of flourishing of the bullion market, vehicle market and cloth market in the city. Traders have also started preparing vigorously.

Gold is glittering these days as it touched its lifetime high of Rs 60,100 per 10 grams at the Nagpur Sarafa Market on March 18 (Saturday), while silver is being quoted at Rs 69,100 per kilogram. The prices do not include GST and Hallmarking charges, according to a report in a local English daily.

The gold prices are skyrocketing due to growing fears of recession and uncertainties in the international market. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, First Republic Bank followed by Credit Suisse Bank has rattled investor sentiment,” said the report quoting a jeweller. The prices of gold and silver are determined in the international market. Whenever there is a crisis in the international market the prices of gold rises as it is considered as a safe haven. Gold is recognised as a ‘world currency’ and has universal acceptance. The demand for gold in the international market is growing as central banks across the world are stocking and building their reserves to support their currencies from depreciating against other currencies.

People having weddings in their homes are buying jewellery for their loved ones. Silver utensils are also in great demand mostly for gifting purposes. However, in January, gold prices crossed the Rs 55,000 per 10 grams level on the back of an astonishing strong rally to reach the Rs 60,100 per 10 grams milestone, a rise of Rs 5,100 per 10 grams within a short span of two and half months. If one considers 3 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the gold price it works out to Rs 61,900 per 10 grams in Nagpur. Most people are hesitant to buy gold at these high levels. But the nature of gold is that every dip in its price offers an opportunity to buy, the report added.

Nagpur is an important market in Central India. So there is a constant flow of customers here. There will be a large amount of shopping this year on the occasion of Gudi Padwa. It is expected to have a turnover of Rs 2500 crore in gold, silver, vehicles, flats and other materials and considering the time of marriage.

Four-wheelers are bought in large quantities at Gudi Padwa. There is enthusiasm among four-wheeler buyers. Good business is expected. Vehicles are being booked. A large number of four-wheelers will be sold on Gudi Padwa.

Nagpurians hit streets to have a glimpse of beautified city!

Nagpur: As Nagpur adorned a look of a bride ahead of C20 meeting, the Nagpurians in large number hit the streets to a have a glimpse of beautified city. The excited citizens are capturing the beauty in the mobile cameras

Nagpur has hosted many important people and events in the past but the preparations and arrangements made this time have no precedence. At the airport, which was done up just sometime back, the lounge has been refurbished yet again and a new ‘roaring’ cynosure has come up, eulogising the region’s identity as the Tiger Capital of India. In the run up to C20, the city had immersed itself into a makeover process that was rigorous and rushed.

One of the first surprises was when the otherwise mostly barren road dividers started brimming with bougenvillas. The mess underneath Shaheed Gowari flyover was cleared and beautified and the pillars donned a aesthetic new look. Unpleasant sights were deftly tucked behind hoardings while under-construction and pallid structures were draped in meters and meters of the tiranga colours.

The frenzy began on Friday night. Wardha road was a traffic mess during night hours with a stream of cars and two-wheelers moving so slowly, as if they were walking through an exhibition. While installation of statues under flyovers, landscaping and fountains and paint jobs and greenery were a steady process, it is the lighting show that has swept Nagpurians off their feet.

People are cramming in front of every cynosure put up by the roadside for pictures. Huge goblets of lights, laser display, focus lights, series dangling from trees, it is an early Diwali already for the city. Meanwhile, there are also many who believe we might have gone a bit overboard with this luminous display of hospitality. But as for the city’s star struck people, it is scurrying to catch a glimpse of all the extravagance as the curtains may drop soon.

She said that from ancient times ‘the world is one family’ has been the mantra of Indian soil. It still is today and will continue to do so in the future. The Presidency of the G-20 nations is a unique opportunity to model this truth before the world.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis welcomed all the guests and delegates to the city of Nagpur. He said that, under the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the G20 has been democratized. It has become a people’s movement. The role of civil society is very important as governments have legal power but civil society has moral powers, he said. There is a need to have a robust system of civil society so that the voice of the last man is heard by the government, stated the Deputy CM of Maharashtra.

Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe informed that 357 delegates are attending the Inception Conference. There are representatives of 26 countries and 130 international delegates have arrived in Nagpur for the C-20 Inception Meet. Welcoming the participants and members, Civil20 India 2023 Sherpa Vijay Nambiar said that the Civil 20 India 2023 Inception Conference is a meeting for grouping of civil society. Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have been, and continue to remain, a strong support to governance, he added. “To complement and supplement these efforts, there needs to be a constructive and productive relationship within CSOs”, he said. This was most apparent during the time of disasters, be it the recent pandemic or past earthquakes and tsunamis, he further said. Vijay Nambiar said that any successful intervention is only possible with the proper engagement of CSOs. CSOs can work beyond all barriers and act as a bridge between governments and public. He said that CSOs can play a major role in solving modern day problems such as realisation of net zero commitments and also in achieving the targets outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals. He further stated that the logo of the CIVIL 20 India 2023 signified selfless service and the tagline ‘You are the Light’ urges everyone to make their own path.

Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi said that it was for the first time that CIVIL20 is being driven by spirituality. “‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘One Earth, One Family One Future’ are not merely slogans but have roots in spirituality”, he said. He further said that India is the motherland of one billion solutions. He remarked that 130 people from 26 countries gathering in the Inception Conference made this world a family. He also said that India has some of the best social protection programs in the world such as Mid-day meal program and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao program. Kailash Satyarthi also said that, under its G20 Presidency, India should raise the voice for more effective representation of the Global South. He said that India should also lead globalisation of compassion.
