Nagpur: After Nagpur Today exposed the ‘plant theft’ incident on Wardha Road, Rana Pratap Nagar Police under the guidance of Zone 1 DCP Anurag Jain took swift action and arrested the accused involved within 24 hours.

The accused have been identified as Jay and his one accomplice.

It may recalled that a video of two individuals allegedly stealing plants from a location near a G20 summit poster had gone viral on social media, causing concerns about security arrangements for the high-profile event. The video provided details of the car’s make and number, which aided the police in tracking down the accused.

Earlier in February, two men were caught on camera stealing potted plants set up for a G20 event in Gurugram and taking them away in a high-end car with a VIP licence plate. The thief turned out to be a builder who was caught by police within a couple of days.

With security measures being stepped up across the city in the run-up to the C20 summit, authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity they may witness.

The swift action taken by Rana Pratap Nagar Police in this instance is a positive sign that such incidents will not be tolerated and that the authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and security of citizens and visitors during the event.

Nagpur: Three men who met in Puzhal Central Prison in connection with separate cases five years ago recently cheated a Nagpur-based businessman of 4 crore by promising a loan of 100 crore to expand his solar business. The trio has been identified as Panneerselvam, Imtiaz alias Satish Kumar, and Pawan Kumar alias Ravi alias Niyamathullah.

According to police reports, Shyamal Chatterjee, who runs Galaxy Solar Energy Private Limited in Nagpur, was looking for investors to expand his business. The trio learned about Chatterjee through their agents who had gathered his details from an online portal where Chatterjee had registered his need.

The trio contacted Chatterjee and promised to provide loans from investors, mostly NRIs, for which they were running ‘East Coast Properties’. They convinced Chatterjee to visit their Chennai office on the East Coast Road (ECR), where they had been staying on rent of 1.5 lakh per month.

Impressed by the expensive interiors and antiques at the office, Chatterjee gave the trio 4 crore as six months’ interest rate through RTGS. However, the trio absconded with the money and destroyed their SIM cards while changing the names on their Aadhaar cards.

Chatterjee filed a complaint with the Chennai police commissioner Shanker Jiwal, and the case was forwarded to the Entrustment Document Fraud wing (EDF) unit. Based on a specific tip, EDF inspector Sumathi arrested the trio from a resort in Kovalam.

Inquiries revealed that the trio had been targeting north Indian businessmen and had operated 11 bank accounts, which have now been frozen. The cops are also searching for two vehicles registered in the name of Real Value Developers and BM Group of Companies.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Panneerselvam and Imthiaz were arrested in a cheating case in 2018 and detained in the Puzhal Central Prison, where they met Ravi, who was arrested in an assault case, and they became friends. The trio had also cheated another businessman of 50 lakh, but he did not file a complaint.

The police have urged people to be cautious and not fall for such scams. The case serves as a warning to the public to be careful while dealing with financial matters and to verify the credentials of those offering loans or investment opportunities.

Nagpur division 100 % electrified in aftermath of Seoni-Chaurai section’s electrification

Nagpur : Indian Railways is working in mission mode as far as becoming the largest green railway in the world is concerned. Before 2030 we are moving towards the aim of becoming a ‘Zero Carbon Emitter”. In order to meet the growing needs of new India, the Indian Railways needs to be environment friendly, efficient, cost effective, punctual and passenger friendly. Things are being prepared according to the holistic approach of modern carriers as well as freight movement.Indian Railways has embarked on an ambitious plan to electrify its entire broad gauge network. With this plan not only will better fuel energy be used, which will increase production, reduce fuel cost, but also valuable foreign exchange will also be saved. In this concern, 100% electrification work of railway lines of Nagpur Railway Division has been completed. Along with the electrification of Seoni-Chaurai 32.59 kilometer railway section under Chhindwara-Nainpur section, Nagpur Railway has achieved the target of 100% electrification..

Concerning Seoni and its surrounding forest areas, “The Jungle Book” written by the famous author Rudyard Kipling highlights the region as Mowgli’s playground. The journey of electrification in Nagpur Railway Division began in 1989-90 with the electrification of the Drug-Paniyajob rail line on the Mumbai-Howrah Main Line. Electrification work of Durg-Paniyajob railway section was completed on 31 March, 1990, Paniyajob-Gondia railway section on 22 January, 1991, Gondia-Bhandara road railway section on 31 March, 1991, Bhandara road-Tharsa railway section on 30 November, 1991 and Tharsa-Nagpur railway section on 28 December, 1991. The Jabalpur-Nainpur-Gondia, Nagpur-Chhindwara, Chhindwara-Nainpur-Mandla Fort rail sections under Nagpur Railway Division have been electrified simultaneously with gauge conversion from narrow gauge to broad gauge.

Thus Nagpur Railway Division is 100% electrified now with a total of 1206.5 route kilometre and 2111.8 track kilometre rail lines. At present, famous trains of the country like Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Janshatabdi and others run from Nagpur Railway Division. A large number of MEMU trains including express trains are being operated. as well as most of the freight trains of South East Central Railway have the distinction of being one of the freight loading zones.

Operations of all these trains are being run from the Nagpur circle. In this railway, a commendable initiative has also been started for quiet and convenient rail transport by introducing the Head on Generation (HOG) system in LHB based trains. With ‘Head on Generation’ (HOG) technology, trains are drawing power directly from the grid through Over Head Equipment (OHE) instead of burning costly diesel fuel. 100% electrification of Nagpur Division to save revenue and millions of tonnes of carbon footprint, it will also play a benevolent role in environmental protection. The pace of environment-friendly and pollution-reducing railway electrification in Indian Railways has increased 9 times since 2014. The scheme of electrification of broad gauge lines by Railways will facilitate the elimination of diesel traction which will result in significant reduction in environmental pollution along with reduction in carbon footprint.

Advantages of Electrification of Railway Lines
• Environment friendly mode of transport
• 100% electrification will result in uninterrupted train operation and improvement in traction
In train operation due to conversion i.e. change from diesel to electric and electric to diesel traction
The delay that will happen will be over.
• Reduced dependence on imported diesel fuel, thereby saving valuable foreign exchange as well
Reduction in carbon footprints.
• Lower operating cost as electric traction is much cheaper and more efficient than diesel traction
Because trains running on electric traction are up to 50 percent cheaper than diesel ones.
• Enhanced transport capability of heavy freight trains and long passenger trains with high carrying capacity of electric locomotives.

VTA insist on start of Kingsway Flyover

Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) had initiated a proposal for having a flyover connected with Ram Jhula to ease traffic congestion on JaiStambh Square by surpassing one-side traffic by flyover in 2016. VTA had also submitted plans and drawings of the proposal to the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and then CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Thankfully the flyover is now constructed and 100% ready to take traffic on, however the same is being delayed as some small work is under progress on the roads below this flyover.

Taking this issue, a delegation of VTA led by its president Shrawankumar Malu met J. H. Bhanuse – superintending engineer, PWD Circle Nagpur; submitted a memorandum and held discussion. VTA also dispatched a memorandum to Nitin Gadkari – union minister, Eknath Shinde – chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis – deputy chief minister and the Chief Engineer, state PWD, Nagpur.

Shrawankumar Malu said, we strongly believe that the flyover should be opened for traffic immediately so that the traffic on the roads below gets reduced drastically and thereby giving the contractors enough space and time to finish the job with much better quality.

Tejinder Singh Renu – secretary of VTA said that the existing position has created such a situation where many road users are using the existing facility by the wrong side and illegal u-turn on Ram Jhula flyover which has increased the chances of fatal accident manifolds. Even the private guards installed by the contractor agency have been removed or decreased, the situation is worsening day by day.

VTA suggested starting of this Kingsway flyover without any further delay in public interest and natural justice.

Judge U B Pethe, remanded Sandeep Indrajit Tiwari (Uttar Pradesh) to Magisterial Custody in the crime registered after police claimed a major haul of MEFPHEDRONE drugs ( MD ) OF 1 KG 911 gms, valued at 1 crore 91 lacs ten thousand. The prosecution had claimed that on 3rd march Kunal Gabhane and Gaurav Kaleshwarrao i.e. accused persons were apprehended by Sonegaon Police in the morning hours and upon their confessional statements, accused no 3 and 4 i.e. Nandkishor Kumbhalkar and Akshay Yeole were arrested on the same day at 9-30 in the night. Prosecution claimed that as per the confession of accused no 3 and 4, accused no 5 and 6 i.e. Pankaj Charde and Akram Khadde were arrested on 8th March at 4-26 am from Goa. Lastly the prosecution contended that on the confessional statement of accused no 5 and 6 , accused no 7 Sandeep Tiwari was arrested from Tatdine, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Going by the version of the prosecution, the investigating officer claimed that accused no 7 Sandeep Tiwari was the kingpin of the entire drug mafia and that the said accused used to prepare the said drug on his own and supply it to various vendors and in return, the vendors used to transfer huge sum of amounts in the bank accounts of the employees of Sandeep and / or they used to indirectly siphon off the money to themselves. It was contended that Sandeep was the kingpin mafia and the sole person who was dealing in these kinds of illegalities.

Prosecution sought police custody remand of the accused for another 5 days by contending that investigation was at preliminary stage and that various aspects had to be covered from various spheres to ascertain and find out how and through whom the drugs were being transported and sold in open market. Refuting the arguments of the prosecution, Advocate Prakash Naidu appearing on behalf of the said Kingpin Sandeep tiwari vehemently argued that the arrests as had been made by the investigating machinery were absurd and squarely on the genesis of absolute wrong and baseless premises, on account of the fact that the prosecution claimed that since accused no 1 and 2 and subsequently other accused persons admitted their involvement, they too are liable, whereas, infact, the confessional statements as had been made and as had been recorded, was not in compliance of the NDPS Act and was contrary to the soul and spirit of section 62, 42, 57 evidence act.

Adv Naidu argued that no confession could’ve been obtained by the police officer from the accused in criminal case in view o the bar contemplated u/s 24 and 25 of the evidence act . It was argued that the police official allege to have visited the house of accused no 7 Sandeep and have claimed to have recovered one thar jeep and nothing incriminating which could connect the accused with the culpability of the alleged crime. However they have deliberately flouted the mandated aspect of handing over a copy of search report to the family members of accused.

As such it was argued that even assuming but not admitting the confessions to be true, the accused persons could not be arrested on the basis of the said confession as the said confession is hit by law and any such confession in police custody is not to be acted upon and such confession cannot lead to any conviction. Adv Naidu argued that granting police custody remand on the genesis of such alleged confession was violative of not only Art 14 but also of Art 20(3) of the constitution and the rights which flow in favour of the accused and which have been guaranteed by the constitution. Appreciating the arguments, the learned Judge U B Pethe rejected the prayer of the prosecution for police remand and sent the accused persons to Magisterial Custody in central jail.

Advocate Prakash Naidu, Homesh Chauhan, Mitesh Bais and Surabhi Naidu ( Godbole ) appeared for the accused Sandeep Tiwari. App held the brief for the state.

All Eyes on C-20 While Citizens Suffer: North Nagpurians March on NMC Demanding Basic Civic Amenities

$

Nagpur: As the C20 summit approaches on March 20, the civic administration is busy preparing for the event, but residents of north Nagpur are facing a different issue. Sewage water has been entering many homes in the area, causing a health hazard. On Friday, approximately 200 residents from Samta Nagar, Kamgar Nagar, Rajgruha Nagar, and Shende Nagar protested by storming the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) headquarters in Civil Lines. The police had to use force to disperse the protesters, and some Youth Congress workers were detained.

Former Congress corporators Neha Nikose and Dinesh Yadav led the protesters. They claimed that the NMC and government only prioritize west and southwest Nagpur, neglecting other parts of the city, including basic civic amenities. Yadav admitted that many residents had encroached on the conservancy lines, causing blockages that have become a significant problem for NMC’s public health engineering department. The NMC’s Ashi Nagar zone had issued notices to property owners who had encroached on the sewer line, but later did nothing about it.

Nikose pointed out that north Nagpur residents pay government taxes but receive poor treatment when it comes to basic amenities such as pothole-free roads, functioning street lights, and a good sewage network. She explained that roads are in poor condition, street lights do not illuminate during the night, sewage water is contaminating drinking water, and cases of dengue fever have increased.

The delegation met with Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B, who assured them that their problems would be resolved without delay. Nikose urged the commissioner to accelerate the process of providing house-to-house water connections in Samta Nagar without any further delay. Drinking water lines have been laid in various locations, but they have not yet reached some areas, forcing people to search for drinking water. Nikose suggested that NMC provide installment options for residents seeking drinking water connections.

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the state’s Public Works Department (PWD) are currently in the process of planting over 2.1 lakh saplings for the upcoming C20 summit, despite it being considered an unsuitable season for plantation, according to report published in Times of India.

This has caused concern among various groups, including the NGO Leader’s Club, who have met with NMC officials to oppose the harm being caused to the trees. If NMC fails to act, citizens have threatened to remove nails from the trees, and the garden department has directed the solid waste management department to recover fines and register FIRs. The minority cell of the Congress and the Nagpur Citizens Forum have also submitted memorandums and demanded FIRs against officials concerned.

According to the civic body data, the NMC usually plants around 20,000 saplings across the city every year. However, for the C20 summit, it is planting 10 times that amount, approximately 2 lakh saplings, from the Airport’s exit to Airport T-point to RBI Square. The NMC is also planting saplings on Wardha Road and around a five-star hotel near Jamtha, even though the city limits end at Khapri. The C20 summit is reportedly being held for three days at a hotel near Narendra Nagar flyover, where the state’s PWD is planting around 10,000 saplings.

However, according to sources from the NGO Leader’s Club and a retired officer from the NMC garden department, March is not an ideal month for planting, and the survival rate of saplings planted in this season will be very low, even with the utmost care. Moreover, NMC workers have been seen hitting nails into trees for installing lighting on VIP and Palm roads, and NMC is painting private property compound walls in front of and adjacent to the hotel where the C20 summit is scheduled. The NMC has also asphalted roads in areas with no houses and installed new street lights on the footpath and in front of the hotel, which has raised questions about the misuse of public
funds.

Nagpur: More than 3,000 trees on the main roads of the city have been damaged as a result of efforts to light up their trunks and branches for the C20 summit. Around one lakh nails have been hammered into the trees to install various types of halogen and LED lights in series. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has spent approximately Rs20 crore on lighting up trees on both sides of Airport Road, Wardha Road from Airport T-point to RBI Square, VIP Road from Rahate Colony T-point to Deekshabhoomi, from Alankar Square to GPO Square, and from RBI Square to Telangkhedi Garden to Futala lake.

One, Kunal Mourya inspected the trees on Wednesday and alleged that at least 3,000 trees have been damaged, with at least 30 nails in each tree’s trunk and branches. Mourya also stated that sap is oozing out wherever nails have been hammered, and branches have been trimmed to accommodate the lights. He claimed that some of these trees in Civil Lines are heritage ones and very old.

Activists have demanded offences against NMC officials for violating the Tree Preservation Act, defacement of public property, and destruction of the environment. Following demands from NGOs, municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B had launched a campaign to remove nails and advertisement boards from trees in December 2021. The civic chief had also decided to lodge a complaint with police against such violators.

Mourya suggested that the police and garden department should immediately register an offence against officials who directed contractors to hammer nails into trees. He also recommended an inquiry into how many bird nests were damaged along with habitats of birds and insects on all these trees, as birds and insects play a crucial role in the environment.

As part of the campaign in 2021, the NGO Green Vigil Foundation had said that when nails are hammered into tree barks, it creates a pathway for fungal infection, and slowly the tree dies. Now, NMC officials have claimed that contractors were directed not to hammer nails for the lighting, and they will check and take necessary action.
