Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: With the novel Coronavirus outrage brought new normal of remote healthcare monitoring to ensure protection of the healthcare workers as they struggle to treat patients, Dozee – a contactless health monitor that can tract heartbeat, respiration, sleep and stress-recovery, with medical-grade 98.4 percent accuracy — made by city based youth Mudit Dandwate helping frontline workers at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) to monitor patients remotely without any physical contact.

A mechanical engineer by education, Mudit, a resident of Besa, had graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Despite losing his left limp in a crocodile attack to save his dog, Mudit found Dozee, an AI-powered Contactless Remote Health Monitoring company, based in Bangalore. Essentially, Dozee converts hospital beds to a step-down ICU to measure patients’ vitals continuously. The device has a sensor that captures micro-vibrations produced by the body every time the heart pumps blood, during inhalation, exhalation, muscle twitches, tremors and body movements.

“This is useful for hospitals as they can now monitor the patients’ vitals automatically throughout their stay by installing the device under the bed. The device is as accurate as all the equipment used by hospitals to gather the same data. There are over 250 devices installed in GMCH and IGGMCH. The hospital administration is often pleased by its assistance,” says Mudit.

“Dozee reduces risk of infection from patients as healthcare workers are not in direct contact with them. It optimizes the time and productivity of nurses who spend a lot of time checking patient vitals and updating them manually throughout the day. And untimely it reduces the need for too many devices per bed, increasing efficiency through a simple device,” Mudit asserts.

In 2020, Dozee won the ET Startup Awards, Nasscom Emerge 50 and also the prestigious Anjani Mashelkar award for innovation in the medical devices field.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Nagpur city has been included in the list of Central Government’s National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The list carries the name of those cities that come under Smart Cities Mission (SCM) and also in non-attainment cities. NCAP is a long-term, time-bound, national-level strategy to tackle the air pollution problem across the country. Under NCAP, 122 non-attainment cities have been identified across the country based on the Air Quality data from 2014-2018. A list of Smart Cities under the SCM, which are also among non-attainment cities have been included in this NCAP.

Nagpur is the only city from Vidarbha that has been included in NCAP, while five other cities from Maharashtra include Aurangabad, Nashik, Pune, Sholapur and Thane. Total 47 cities from all over India have been included in the list of NCAP. The programme is targeting to achieve 20% to 30% reduction in air pollution till 2024. The city specific action plan has been prepared which, inter-alia, include measures for strengthening the monitoring network, reducing vehicular, industrial emissions, increasing public awareness etc.

This will be a mid-term, five-year project to begin with keeping 2019 as the base year. However, the international experiences and national studies indicate that significant outcome in terms of air pollution initiatives are visible only in the long-term, and hence the programme may be further extended to 20–25 years in the long-term after a mid-term review of the outcomes. The action plan has been prepared for all these cities and it will be monitored by Committees at Central and State-level namely Steering Committee, Monitoring Committee and Implementation Committee. As per the programme, air quality of cities will be monitored by State Pollution Control Boards which publishes their results from time to time.

Nagpur: A large number of trucks carrying heavy loads of goods are getting stranded on Railway over bridge (RoB) between Faras and Koradi Octroi Post every night for the past two months. This has been leading to the utmost frustration of the citizens.

These transport vehicles coming from Koradi take a left turn at Faras for Mankapur Square. However, this portion of the road is too narrow so that two-wheelers cannot overtake the stationary trucks.

However, this situation is nothing short of dangerous for the bridge as load testing of the bridge is not done to bear the massive weight of trucks, standing bumper to bumper on one side of the bridge.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The three-month long investigation into the sequence of events leading to the death of four members of a family — a couple and their two children, who were discovered dead in their Koradi based home back in August – indicated that the woman was the one who pulled the curtains down on their lives.

“Dr Sushma Rane had killed her husband Dhiraj Rane, son Dhruv (11) and daughter Vanya (5) by injecting Succinylcholine (Sucol) injection to them and later ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan on August 18. Husband’s alcohol addiction, his doubting and strange behaviour led Dr Sushma to take the extreme step,” informed Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone V Neelotpal here on Wednesday.

Dhiraj Rane, 42, a lecturer in a reputed college, his doctor wife Sushma, 40, and their two children, 11-year-old Dhruv and five-year-old daughter Vannya, were found dead in their home in the Om Nagar locality. While Rane and the two children were found dead on a bed in one room, Sushma was found hanging from a ceiling fan in an adjacent room. A syringe and a suicide note were found on the bed, said police.

During investigation relatives of Dr Sushma had told the police that Dhiraj was mentally harassing Dr. Sushma and used to pick quarrel with her on every small issue. Dhiraj used to suspect the fidelity of Dr Sushma and had diverted all incoming phone calls to his mobile phone. “She was not even allowed to talk with her family members on a mobile phone,” the DCP said.

Sushma got a partly-used vial of a medicine used as muscle relaxant, anesthesia and a syringe from a nurse on some pretext. She apparently used this to kill her husband and two children, before she hanged herself.

The police had recovered two syringes from the bedroom where the bodies of the three persons were lying; a used syringe and a vial of Sucol found in the backyard of the house; empty liquor and beer bottles were also recovered from the house. An offence under Section 302 of IPC was registered at Koradi police station against Dr. Sushma Rane. ACP P M Karyakarte, PSI G B Kankal, WPSI Jagtap were present in the press conference.

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday approved the draft Shakti criminal law bills, which contains provisions of stern punishment, including death penalty, for serious crimes such as rape, acid attack and child abuse, informed Maharashtra Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh here on Thursday.

The Bills – Maharashtra Shakti Criminal Law (Maharashtra Amendment) Act, 2020 and the Special Court and Machinery for Implementation of Maharashtra Shakti Criminal Law, 2020 – will be tabled during the two-day Winter Session of the legislature commencing on Monday.

Last December, the Maharashtra government had announced that it is bringing the law on the lines of the Andhra Pradesh’s Disha Act with a provision of death penalty for rape instead of the current punishment of 10 to 20 years in jail.

The draft Bills provide for completing investigation and trial within a stipulated time frame. Also, special police teams and separate courts will be set up for investigation and trial of cases against women and children, it stated.

The perpetrators, if found guilty, will be imprisoned for not less than 10 years. This may extend to the remainder of their natural lives or with death sentences in cases that have characteristics of being heinous in nature, the draft added.

Further, sum of Rs 10 lakh will be given to an acid attack victim for plastic surgery and facial reconstruction. The amount will be collected as fine from the convict.

The government has also proposed amendments in the Criminal Procedure Code to ensure speedy investigation and trial. It has proposed to bring down the investigation period to 15 working days from two months and trial period to 30 working days from two months. The appeal period has been proposed to be reduced to 45 days from six months.

“The draft Bills were discussed in the Cabinet today. It has given a go-ahead to table the Bills in the Winter Session of the legislature. After the approval of the legislature, the Bills will be sent to the Centre for its approval and then to the President,” said Home Minister.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau report for 2019, Maharashtra has reported the third highest number of crimes against women, only behind Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. It accounted for 9.2 per cent of the total crimes against women registered across the country.

Key routes still closed: guides, drivers
Following the ease in lockdown we were seeking an opportunity to start earning. However, some key routes which were open till March before the lockdown closed the tourism has still not been opened despite park was opened in this season, Owing to short routes, we have to deal with tourist’s anger as there isn’t enough stretch left for us to conduct 4 hour-long safari, alleged guides and drivers.

Issue resolved: DFO

Under difficult circumstances, i.e almost 20 feet deep isde Bharatvan jangle areas 500 mm pipeline was laid. Thustblock casting on both end of newly laid 500 mm dia pipeline completed and then NMC-OCW team by taking a shutdown of 12-hours completed final interconnection work on Dec 10, 2020. The existing pipeline under the retaining wall will be kept as it is and water supply to l to entire Sanjay Nagar, Trust Layout, Pankaj Nagar, Raju Nagar, Sudam Nagari, Upper portion of Pandhrabodi etc will be done via new bypass line now.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Members of “Ban Ganga-Jamuna” campaign, a social movement led by the residents of Nagpur, applauded the police action on Thursday which led to the rescue of minor girls forced into prostitution. The police action also unearthed several cases of blatant violation of law within the Ganga Jamuna red light area.

Minor trafficking is quite rampant in Ganga Jamuna. Yesterday, a police action led by DCP (Crime) Gajanan Rajmane and Zonal DCP Lohit Matani, led to the arrest of 129 people and rescue of 8 minor girls from the red-light area. In October, the police had rescued 14 young girls who were trafficked from different states and pushed into the red-light district in Nagpur.

“We welcome such bold action by the police. We have been fighting over the last few years to curb such criminal activities in and around Ganga Jamuna due to the presence of the red light area. The area is fast becoming a major hub of all kinds of crime, especially atrocities against women. The police have done many such raids in the past too and the members of the campaign will always support the authorities,” says Sunil Gotafode, a social activist and member of the campaign.

Nagpur stands seventh nationally for crime against women, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau. Statewide, as many as 105 women go missing every day and 17 get trafficked every week in Maharashtra, states the NCRB data. Of the total POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) girl victims, 47% are sexually assaulted and 48% are raped in the state.

“We fear that after the pandemic, more and more girls will be victimised and pushed into flesh trade. Girls and young women from Vidarbha districts who are badly hit with poverty and unemployment are most vulnerable. They will be tricked and trafficked. Even the city girls are vulnerable. To effectively curb trafficking and other crimes, we demand a permanent closure of the red-light area and other centres where exploitation of girls and women is rampant,” says Bhumika Gotafode, an active member of the campaign.

As to what will happen to the victims of trafficking and sex workers, Gotafode suggests that the civil society and govt authorities should work towards rehabilitation of these women and girls into the society. “it is possible to give a new lease of life to these women and enable them to stand on their own feet,” he adds.
