Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

The Nagpur 24×7 Water Supply Project implemented jointly by Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Orange City Water has not only ensured high quality water supply services to the city but has also contributed significantly to boosting the economy of the city of Nagpur.

Nagpur, being the geographical centre of the country is one of the fastest developing cities in India.
Awarded as a smart city in 2016, it is emerging as one of the biggest trading centres of the country thus, attracting businesses and stimulating development activities. This, coupled with a burgeoning population has necessitated ‘improving access to water for its citizens’ to be the core development agenda of Nagpur Municipal Corporation.

In 2012, the NMC and Orange City Water (OCW) launched the “Nagpur 24X7 water supply project” with a commitment to provide safe and continuous water supply to all across the city. With providing access to drinking water to over 1.3 million people in the city of Nagpur, OCW is committed to benefitting Nagpur city not only through supplying potable water to each household, but has also created skilled jobs, and ensured that over 80% of the workforce is employed locally.

Today, with more than 1500 direct and indirect employees, OCW is one of the key employers in Nagpur city. OCW has built a strong and dedicated team of professionals that perform at various verticals – from designing specialized treatment processes to ground level construction, customer service operations to social welfare teams. The team includes highly skilled and trained Engineers, Customer service professionals, technicians and semi-skilled and unskilled laborers. Along with boosting employment opportunities in the city, OCW has created a significant revenue flow into the local community through indirect and induced jobs.

In addition to this, an innovative step that OCW has taken is introducing Women Hydrant Supervisors in the male dominant work of tanker management. Women hydrant supervisors have been working with OCW for more than 4 years now.

Adding more about this, OCW’s General Manager HR Mr. Kuldeep Singh mentioned, “We have always believed that ladies can handle any kind of management responsibly and sensitively. Our women supervisors have proved us right over time. We were not completely confident about this step initially, but our efficient female force reassured us about our belief to be well placed.”

Hydrant Supervisor GayatriKatare said, “Our job is definitely challenging. Every day we face different kinds of people. But these challenges are the real test and it gives a different level of satisfaction. The motivation we receive from OCW and our senior officers keeps us charged to continue performing.”

In the tough times of Corona, OCW has continued giving all the dues to all the workers, plumbers, fitters, tanker drivers, valvemen, Security guards, drivers and the workers indirectly dependent on OCW. In this way, OCW has supported thousands of families constantly.

OCW is committed to work with the local business network and maximize opportunities in the local supply chain. It utilizes local businesses in its current works where possible, and this will continue to be one of the key focus areas.

For an efficient service delivery, OCW constantly strives towards skill development of its human resources. This is realized by continuous learning and professional training of the employees. Working with OCW has given the local youths an opportunity to learn and understand the PPP water projects in India.

Apart from direct generation of employment opportunities, OCW is also steering a model slum development program jointly with NGOs and other community schemes. Under this initiative, OCW is providing skill development training to the community women through ‘Samarth Centers’. There are two such centers operational in the city where designing and stitching training is given. This has provided many women the opportunity to start their own enterprise and earn livelihood through these newly acquired skills.

The project’s shared community identity is firmly reflected through its commitment to provide ‘potable water access to all’, create local employment, support livelihoods and contribute to holistic development that is integral to OCW’s vision of a shared purpose.

Nagpur: Amid the row over a Shiv Sena leader suggesting an ”Azaan” recital competition for Muslim children, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday claimed the Sena has “junked” its Hindutva ideology propagated by party founder Bal Thackeray and is pursuing “vote bank politics”.

Talking to reporters here, Fadnavis, who is the leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, said the Shiv Sena has become “pseudo-secular”, and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and party MP Sanjay Raut should speak on the issue.

The Sena, NCP and Congress are constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena Mumbai-South vibhag pramukh (division head) Pandurang Sakpal in an interview to an Urdu news portal recently likened ”Azaan” (a call for Muslim prayer) with Hindu ritual of ”aarti” and suggested holding an ”Azaan” recital competition for Muslim children.

“This is not the Shiv Sena of ”Hindu Hriday Samrat” (emperor of Hindu hearts) Balasaheb Thackeray. He had always fought on this issue and the Shiv Sena is doing just the opposite of what Balasaheb had said in his statements and articles in (Sena mouthpiece) ”Saamana”,” Fadnavis said.

“The Shiv Sena has junked Hindutva for the sake of power and has become pseudo-secular. An appeasement policy is going on in the Shiv Sena. We have been saying it repeatedly…and it has become very clear,” he said.

To a query, Fadnavis said, “We have never considered Muslims as vote bank and do not want appeasement policy. Muslims are part of the ”Sabka saath sabka vikas”.”

But, the Shiv Sena is doing “vote bank politics”, considering Muslims as vote bank, the former state chief minister claimed.

Nagpur: Enraged over wife refusing sex, a pervert man killed her by strangulation. Moreover, the accused, with the intention to mislead cops, tried to portray wife’s death due to a heart attack. But the post mortem report nailed him and led to his arrest. The bizarre incident took place in Butibori MIDC police jurisdiction on November 28.

The accused has been identified as Dinesh Chhatilal Pal, a native of Churhut Sindhi village in Madhya Pradesh. Dinesh Pal worked as a labourer with a MIDC-based company.

According to police, the Pal couple had been staying in Nagpur district for the last three years. They have three children, the youngest three months old. The couple had repeated fights over sex on the same night. A quarrel broke out between the couple in the wee hours of Saturday when Pal’s wife Sushma (35) refused him to establish physical relations. Enraged by wife’s refusal, the accused strangulated her to death. Later, he called the police and told them that she died in her sleep in a bid to portray the murder as an accidental death. After registering a case of accidental death, the Butibori MIDC police sent the body for post-mortem. On Tuesday, the police received the post-mortem report in which the doctors opined that Sushma died of strangulation.

The cops immediately took Pal in custody and grilled him intensely. He confessed to the crime during the interrogation.

Move to make Nagpur beggar free city

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Following a report published in Nagpur Today with title “Nagging nuisance: Kids begging at traffic signals shows city in poor light,” the authorities concerned joined hands to make the city free of beggars.

In the NT report, it was stated that “The nagging menace of kids begging at almost every traffic signal is increasing in the Second Capital and also showing it in poor light. The malnourished, handicapped children and women with infants irritating the passersby at traffic signals for alms is a sickening sight. The vehicle owners also face humiliation and embarrassment as well if alms are not doled out to the stretching hands of kids and women carrying their babies.”

Taking a serious note of the report, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), police, Women and Child Development Departments along with NGOs have came together in order to rid the Nagpur City of begging menace. The authorities conducted a drive against the vagabonds, street dwellers and footpath encroachers, who indulge in begging. The drive covered Samvidhan Chowk near RBI till Nelson Square. The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) too accompanied the police and NMC teams during the raids as a sizeable number of minors along with adults have been found begging on the roads in city.

During the action, five women were rounded up and a minor was rescued. The women as well as the minor were shifted to the Government Home meant for beggars.

The beggars, seen mostly at busy traffic signals without masks, approach motorists and bikers for alms, thereby raising the risk of spreading Covid-19 currently prevailing in the city.

Notably, the Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar had written to NMC Commissioner Radhakrishnan B regarding the beggar menace on roads. The top cop has also started a covert mission against child trafficking rackets which have a close nexus with beggars. Under Kumar’s supervision, the Social Security Wing of the Crime Branch will participate in the joint drive.

While action under the Maharashtra Police Act was initiated against five women, the joint team also removed around 50 vagabonds and beggars from roads, footpaths and under-bridges with a strict warning. Last week, four minors were rescued.

The begging on the streets has become a profession. Almost at every stop you are greeted by beggars. They gather around you when you stop at a signal. The most awful thing is that they encourage their children to beg and despite being physically fit. Interestingly, some beggars sell petty things but the main business is to spread their hands for a one rupee coin or more. The cops managing the traffic at the squares remain silent spectators as no move is made to shoo away the dirty, half naked kids. It is natural for the vehicle owners to reach out to their wallets and gently drop a coin or two in the beggar’s hands.

NMC built two bus stops opposite Trilium Mall near Medical Square but no bus halts at these stops

Nagpur: “Penny wise and pound foolish.” This idiom aptly defines the working style of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).

For the sake of information, the NMC constructed two bus stops opposite Trilium Mall near Medical Square. These bus stops were intended to serve Aapli Bus commuters going towards either Besa or Bahadura Phata or Pipla Phata or Shesh Nagar destinations. But even after construction of the two bus stops at Trilium Mall almost a year back, the foolish officials of NMC are not using them as no bus halts there. Instead, in a height of absurdity, the authorities have designated a bus stop bang middle of busy Medical Square for the above-mentioned commuters. The Medical Square is besieged by haath thelas, roadside vendors selling fruits, flowers, and many things.

When a Aapli Bus makes a halt at the Medical Square stop, it is total traffic chaos. Most painful part of the bus stop is the torture of commuters. The commuters, many of them patients visiting the GMCH, have to stand for long hours as there is no facility for sitting like the regular bus stop.

Common sense seems an alien word for the NMC officials. The two posh bus stops constructed at Trilium Mall for convenience of commuters but no bus halts there. And the busy Medical Square is the bus stop where Aapli Bus creates nuisance of all kind.

“Penny wise and pound foolish.” NMC babus should show common sense and prove that the idiom does not apply to them.

Nagpur: Following the blast at the Bamboo Treatment Unit of the Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board (MBDB) in Gorewada back in October that brought rampant irregularities to the fore, the concerning authorities has disregarded the action, even after being issued the closure notice by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

No safety measures
Back in October, the vacuum pressure impregnation unit — installed by Anil Enterprises, Dewas – was blasted without the safety value that was supposed to shut it automatically in case it is unable to stop operation on its own. The heavy steel nut-bolts were broken into pieces and flew past the worker like bullets. Fortunately, no workers were reportedly sustained severe injuries, despite the fact that they did not wear any safety gear and they are also not covered under any type of insurance.

Bamboo treatment with hazardous chemicals
Following the prime investigation, some shocking revelations cropped up as the unit nastily treats bamboo with a hazardous chemical called copper chrome boron (CCB) and thousands of liters of chemical liquid is flushed into the perennial nullah, used by wild animals to quench thirst and Gorewada lake from where drinking water is supplied to the city. Even the unit was operating sans any validation from the MPCB.

Unit ignored orders
“Following the violations, the MPCB has served a closure notice to the unit and also directed the competent authorities to disconnect electricity and water supply of the illicit unit,” informed A M Kare, Regional Officer, Nagpur District to Nagpur Today. Though the closure notice was served on November 23, the concerning authorities have failed to comply.

Authorities mum
On the allegation of the legal consent sought by the unit, Kare said, “No such letter has come to his table so far. Even if something comes up, we’ve legal way to evaluate and take further courses of action afterwards,” he asserted.
