Nagpur: “A city cannot be maintained clean and beautiful forcibly. Cleanliness is part of an attitude. If one is determined to change habit and take lead in keeping his or her city clean, then there would be no hurdle in making Nagpur a clean and beautiful city. NMC is launching the unique “Mummy Papa You Too” campaign by roping in students for clean Nagpur city. The role of headmasters and principals is vital for making the campaign successful. All should give their “best” for their city,” Mayor Sandeep Joshi said.

The Education Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Nagpur Traffic Police are jointly organising the “Mummy Papa You Too” campaign aimed at imbibing cleanliness importance among students. The campaign will be implemented from January 13 to 19 in city.

In the backdrop of the novel campaign, a workshop of headmasters and principals of 1400 schools in city was held at Kavi Suresh Bhat Auditorium on Wednesday. The Mayor addressed the workshop. Other dignitaries present on the dais include Deputy Mayor Manisha Kothekar, Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, Education Committee Chairman Prof Dilip Diwe, Deputy Chairman Pramod Tabhane, Additional Commissioner Ram Joshi, Education Officer Priti Mishrikotkar, environmentalist Juhi Pandharipande, and other officials.

The Mayor said that children are the best tool to bring about any change and hence civic body’s title of programme is ‘Mummy-Papa You Too’, where the hidden part is that the children say, they are ashamed of their parents as they are littering public places. Through school children, we want to discipline their parents as we believe at least people would not want to hand over a legacy that makes their children hang their heads in shame. Already a meeting was held on Monday with corporators, representatives of Non Government Organisations (NGOs), as NMC apart from its own efforts want involvement of citizens in the campaign to keep city clean, not today, not tomorrow, but forever.

While the actual campaign starts from January 13, prior to that to build up tempo, NMC is holding various programmes involving schools and the children. A meeting with parents on January 11 at 9 am in every school of city well be held. About 500 parents do attend the meet at any school, so NMC is aiming to reach nearly six lakh citizens and impress upon them to treat entire city as their home and help it keep clean just as one maintain cleanliness as our homes, Mayor said.

At the parents meet civic body would depute one speaker who would impress upon citizens co-operation replicating Indore’s success in Nagpur. Mayor said awareness campaign has beenkey to previous success achieved by NMC as rankings improved in last two quarter. A human chain of school children is also planned as part of campaign on January 17, and it would be sort of record in country. Various slogans and debate competition are also organised for students and parents. Responding to queries, Mayor said NMC too is ironing out its deficiencies to improve garbage collection and much change is already noticeable in market places. Now our target is changing mentality of citizens and without it nothing can be achieved. The prize distribution of various competitions will be held on February 2 at Suresh Bhat Auditorium.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Siemens Mobility Nagpur Metro conducted awareness program on Thursday to mark ‘Road Safety Week’ which was observed from January 11 to 17, 2020.

A rally by staff and workmen highlighted the road safety rules. The staff displayed slogans and placards to make general public aware of these rules. A large number of people gave good response to the rally and spread the message on road safety.

The Siemens Mobility Nagpur Metro staff also conducted a ‘Yamraj Act’. In two to three instances, Yama sat behind a bike rider without helmet to convey the road safety message — if you do not follow traffic rules, Yama is right behind you to take away your life. Therefore, follow rules, save your and others life.

The enthusiastic public participants were gifted helmets and roses with sweets.

The importance of Road Safety Week can be gauged from the fact that over 1.51 lakh people lose their lives every year in our country in road accidents and many more are debilitated. This causes immense economic hardship and emotional trauma in their families. There is an urgent need to make our roads safer as the loss of lives and limbs cannot be accepted as the price of mobility.

The Central and the State Governments have been implementing various measures to make roads safer. But the magnitude and gravity of the problem are such that these alone will not suffice. There is a need for the society at large to take cognizance of the issue and to join hands to make road safety a social movement.

Around 500 schools asked to encourage parents pack healthy food in tiffins

Nagpur: In a significant move, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Nagpur, has taken the initiative to approach schools and colleges and make them aware about safe food practices and create ‘Eat Right Campus’.

Under the initiative, the FDA has sent letters to around 500 schools asking them to encourage parents pack healthy food in the tiffins of children. Acting on the FDA letters, the schools issued guidelines to parents and have urged them no to pack junk food in tiffins of children.

Currently, most of the canteens of schools and colleges serve unhealthy, junk food full of fats, sugar, salt and excessive calories such as ‘Vada Pav,’ Noodles etc. Students grab these unhealthy stuff on daily basis which is harmful to health. In a recent survey conducted by FDA, it was found that the students having food for three days in a week are overweight compared to other students. Sugar levels in the students studying in class 11 and 12 have also been found at higher levels. In this situation, such students could face heart ailments in the next 10 years. Alarmed by the facts as well as to ensure healthy future of students, the FDA has, from July 7, 2019, has directed the schools and colleges in Maharashtra to get rid of pizza, burger, ice-cream, chocolates and serve a healthy and tasty menu instead.

The FDA survey further revealed that tiffins of 60 percent of students of schools and colleges contained junk food. As such, change of menu in canteens only will not work as far as healthy food is concerned. Parents will have to be convinced about healthy food practices and ensure junk food find no place in tiffins of students. Concerned over the unhealthy food in tiffins, the FDA has sent letters to around 500 schools and colleges in Nagpur district and stressed for healthy food practice. On the other hand, 171 schools on their own have asked the parents to pack healthy food in tiffins of their children. The FDA on its part has conducted workshops in 450 schools and colleges and the students were directly told about healthy food practices.

FDA Nagpur’s Joint Commissioner C B Pawar said that FDA teams in Maharashtra have given the responsibility to implement two campaigns. First is to make educational institutions aware of guidelines for providing wholesome and nutritious food to children. Second is guidelines on food safety, hygiene and sanitation for food available in school canteens. Visits, workshops, and inspections will continue, said Pawar.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: A delegation of Prabhag 15 residents, Nagpur City Congress Committee and Congress Legal Cell met Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, Additional Commissioner Ram Joshi and Dharampeth Zone Assistant Commissioner Prakash Varade and submitted a memorandum highlighting enormous hardships being faced by citizens following poor quality and uneven construction of cement roads in city.

The delegation pointed out that a network of cement roads is being constructed in city. Internal cement roads are being built in Dharampeth, Gadga and Gawlipura coming under Prabhag 15. Despite bringing notice to the contractor and local Corporator, the level of cement roads have gone higher than the houses situated along the roads. This eneven construction has pushed citizens in a tight spot. People are exposed to multiple risks while carrying out their daily chores as contractors have ignored basic safety aspects while undertaking works on the cement roads.

During the recent rains, water gushed into houses of residents. Moreover, poor quality construction has added woes of the residents. The contractor, instead of removing the illegally constructed chambers of Reliance Jio Internet, has increased the height of the chambers and brought them at road level. One can imagine what would happen if someone is to lose balance on the uneven road surface and more worrying is difference in depth between tar road and newly-constructed concrete road. During the construction stage the contractor should have ensured that this site is levelled evenly to ensure smooth passage for vehicles. with civic officials least interested in supervising the ongoing concrete road construction, contractors are busy designing more and more puzzles for road users, the delegation said.

The delegation was led by Executive Member of Nagpur City Congress Committee and MPCC Legal Cell Secretary Adv Akshay Samarth. The copies of the memorandum have also been submitted to office of Mayor Sandeep Joshi, Deputy Mayor Manisha Kothekar, Health Officer, Leader of Opposition in NMC.

The Municipal Commissioner Bangar reportedly told the delegation that the problem persists in entire city and not only in Prabhag 15. However, taking serious note of the hardships being faced by residents, Bangar immediately phoned concerned officials and directed them to initiate necessary measures to lessen problems of residents. Additional Commissioner Ram Joshi also listened to the complaints of the residents and assured to look into them. The Assistant Commissioner Varade assured to inspect the cement roads himself.

Other members of the delegation include City Congress office-bearers Devendra Rotele, Yugal Vidhavat, Yogesh Yersamwar, Adv Abhay Randive, Adv Ujwal Raut, Adv Shabana Divan, Adv Sunita Paul, Adv Archana Gajbhiye, Ramprasad Chaudhary, Rambhau Bante, Vivek Patkar, Naresh Naidu, Vishal Sayre, Nikhil Naidu, Chandan Pande, and residents of Dharampeth, Gadga, Gawlipura and Ramdaspeth.
