Swachh Bharat Survey : Nagpur stuck in potholes, NMC may lose crucial marks

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Even as all eyes are fixed on the next round of Swachh Survekshan, the path to score good appears far from Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), thanks to the roads riddled with potholes in the city. NMC has received a kit for the 2020 Swachh Bharat Survekshan, which has three broad parameters; infrastructure availability, maintenance of road premises and equipment, and feedback from commuters for rating roads on overall cleanliness, under the Swachh Bharat Survey. Bad roads or potholed roads would cost NMC 163 marks. In 2019, Nagpur city stood 58th in the Swachh survey.

More recently, NMC has earned a dubious distinction for bad roads and poor maintenance of traffic signals. Civic activist and secretary of Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) Tejinder Singh Renu admitted that Nagpur will face an extreme challenge due to new parameters of Swachh infrastructure. “As a majority of roads in Nagpur are under construction, our current roads condition, water drainage, street markings and cleanliness is certainly not up to the mark. Therefore, maintaining our position will be a big challenge for city administration,” he pointed out. “I believe such change of parameters by ministry of urban development is deliberate so that all city administrations concentrate on road conditions, which need to be good with the monsoon around the corner.

Bad roads in the rainy season makes road usage extremely dangerous, especially for two-wheeler users,” he added. Our city administration needs to be strict about contractors, including those of MSRDC, NHAI and NIT, as roads are not repaired even after other work is completed. The service roads are in a pathetic condition, which makes riding absolutely miserable during monsoon. “If roads are not made motorable soon, I fear a drastic drop in city’s rating in next Swachh Bharat rankings,” he said.

Another challenge for NMC this year will be to remain on its toes through the year, as from this year Swachh Bharat assessment would be undertaken on a quarterly basis. This move comes after many cities slipped, and were not able to maintain hygiene once they got a decent ranking on cleanliness levels in the previous Swachh surveys, and NMC was no exception. The quarterly rank of cities will play a crucial role in their annual ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2020 because of the 25% weight given to the quarterly assessment, said the official. The annual assessment will be conducted between January and February 2020, he said.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: GoAir, India’s fastest growing airline, has recorded the best On-Time Performance (OTP) for the 9th consecutive month. GoAir recorded 91.8% OTP according to the latest report released by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for May 2019. This achievement is the result of GoAir’s continuous focus on enhancing customer experience without compromising on service deliveries. Besides, for the month of May 2019, GoAir had the lowest cancellation rate of 0.33%.

OTP ranking assumes critical importance in today’s context when passengers are looking at reliability and trust. From various research studies it is evident that achieving better customer satisfaction is about more than airfare and flight availability. When considering an airline, travelers look for timeliness and assurance and on-time arrival is one of the major factors.

GoAir is pleased to offer a reliable travel service wherein we assure travelers to get them to their destination in a timely manner while taking into consideration factors that are not necessarily in the control of the airline like airport congestion, taxi times from the runways, gate availability etc. as these challenges are in the domain of air traffic control or the airport authority.

Besides, the DGCA report also states that GoAir had the second highest load factor of 93.3 % indicating the number of seats filled.

GoAir spokesperson said, “GoAir is India’s fastest growing airline and we will continue to step up our performance and invest in Operational Excellence across the board. We thank our customers as this milestone would not have been possible without their punctuality, loyalty and support of millions of guests who have flown with us.”

GoAir operates over 270 daily flights and carried around 13 lakh passengers in the month of May 2019. GoAir flies to 24 domestic destinations including Ahmedabad, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, Kannur, Leh, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Port Blair, Pune, Ranchi and Srinagar, and 4 international destinations, including Phuket, Malé, Muscat and Abu Dhabi.

BOI Fraud Case: ED Raids Multiple Locations in Maharashtra Against Pune-based Group

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur/Pune: The ED conducted multiple searches in Maharashtra on Thursday against a Pune-based alloy-making group on charges of money laundering through an alleged bank fraud to the tune of about Rs 300 crore.

The central agency said it raided the factory and residential premises of Varron Aluminium Private Limited (VAPL) and Varron Auto Comp Private Limited (VACL) in Pune, Ratnagiri, Sangli and Nagpur in a case in which the Bank of India (BoI) was cheated by alleged misuse of the Letters of Credit (LC) facility.

An LC denotes an official letter issued by a bank to another bank to serve as a guarantee for payments made to a specified person under specified conditions.

The searches were carried out after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), based on an FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The BoI was the complainant in the case, the ED said.

The agency, in a statement, said VAPL maintained a current bank account with the Karve Road branch of the BoI in Pune and that the firm “submitted LCs and bills drawn from a Canara Bank branch in the same city, which were negotiated or discounted” in favour of the BoI.

“The bills were discounted by the BoI after the verification of the LC and acceptance of all the bills by the authorised officials of Canara Bank (Deccan Gymkhana, Pune branch) and the aggregate amount of Rs 293 crore was credited to the account of VAPL,” it said.

Later, when the BoI approached the Canara Bank for re-payment of dues, the latter informed that “the purported LC was neither issued nor bills were accepted by their branch through the approved mode of Structured Financial Messaging System (SFMS) and thus, they did not entertain the repayment request of the BoI, the ED alleged.

“This resulted in a loss to the Bank of India,” the agency said.

It said Shrikant Pandhurang Sawaikar, the director and the main man behind VAPL, along with Canara Bank officials and other private individuals, “entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat the BoI”.

“In pursuance to the said criminal conspiracy, a non-genuine LC, commercial invoices and lorry receipts were used for the release of Rs 293 crore in the account of VAPL,” the ED said, adding that it resulted in a fraud and the bank suffering losses.

The agency said its probe, so far, had revealed that the said money “was immediately transferred through various accounts and finally utilised for settling old dues and making fixed deposits” by the accused.

Further investigation to establish the money trail and attachment of assets was under progress, it added.
