NMC, Green Vigil Foundation, Earth Day Network hold programme to mark Earth Day

Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Green Vigil Foundation and Earth Day Network jointly organized a programme to mark Earth Day 2019 on Monday by conducting a citizen outreach campaign at Children’s Traffic Park, Dharampeth, Nagpur.

The devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969 prompted former US Senator Gaylord Nelson to initiate a movement in America that led to bringing millions of Americans on street on April 22, 1970, making it the first Earth Day to protest against the deterioration of environment.

Following this year’s Earth Day theme – ‘Protect Our Species’, members of Green Vigil Foundation carrying colourful posters and placards informed the people about fast extinction of millions of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, fish, corals, their causes and consequences.

Green Vigil members told people that globally, reduction in wildlife population is caused by human activities like deforestation, habitat destruction, poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution, global warming and climate change.

Surbhi Jaiswal, Co-ordinator, Earth Day Network, India quipped, we humans being super species have overexploited our natural resources, polluted all environmental components, destructed forests, disturbed the entire ecosystem. Sadly, we have forgotten that we are a part of it and will be worst hit by dire consequences. So, it’s a wake-up call to act before it’s too late.

Karuna Singh, Regional Director South Asia and Country Director, Earth Day Network, India, appreciated the efforts of Green Vigil Foundation and Nagpur Municipal Corporation for environment protection in the city.

The campaign was conducted under the able guidance of Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar and Additional Commissioners Aziz Sheikh and Ram Joshi

Kaustav Chatterjee, Surbhi Jaiswal, Mehul Kosurkar, Kalyani Vaidya, Sheetal Choudhary, Vikash Yadav, Bishnudeo Yadav, Kartiki Kawale, Sarang More, Ruta Dharmadhikari, Chinmay Dhiman, Vaibhav Pandey, Indrayani Thakare, Prajakta Pusadkar, Deendayal Tembhekar and others worked hard for the success of the campaign.

Prashant has been working as Zomato delivery boy for about 2 years. He was on his way to delivering a food parcel in Chhapru Nagar where his Activa scooter slipped after hitting an uneven surface formed due to excavation works on the stretch. As Prashant fell off his scooter after losing balance he got crushed under the wheels on the garbage vehicle (MH31 EN0744) speeding from behind. The tipper driver was said to be heavily drunk, following which he could not control the vehicle.

Metro rail works along with BSNL’s cable laying works on this stretch have added to the mess on this stretch as the debris is often spread on the road, making it difficult for the two-wheeler riders passing through this stretch.
Prashant was wearing the helmet however his head came under the wheels. He died on the spot.

Prashant was the sole bread winner of his family of a wife and two children – a son aged 10 and a daughter aged 8 years.
After this incident Prashant’s kin have demanded stern action against the erring driver and Kanak Resources Managment, the company engaged in garbage pick up works.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Gondia: Tension ran high in a village near Gondia as body of a woman was found lying in pool of blood in a farm on Monday evening. The woman had gone to her farm for picking mahua flowers.

The deceased has been identified as Dileshwari Baghel (42), resident of Ambetalab village in Goregaon Tehsil of Gondia district. Her blood-soaked body was spotted by some shepherds who were returning to their village after foraging cattle. The shepherds informed villagers who in turn alerted Goregaon police. Marks of deep wounds on her head were found and blood was also oozing from her mouth. Cops have recovered a blood-stained lathi probably used in murdering the woman. A man named Chhaganlal is being suspected to be the alleged killer.

The Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jalinder Nalkul informed that the deceased Dileshwari and accused Chhaganlal were neighbours. Farms of both are also near to each other’s. Dileshwari had gone to her farm around 2 pm on Monday to pluck mahua flowers. Since the accused Chhaganlal is absconding, cops have no clues as to why the she was killed. However, according to sources, both the deceased and the accused were in good terms. A currency note found near body of Dileshwari has a sentence of 4-5 lines which says ‘I will also die by consuming poison. The words could have been written by the accused to mislead the cops in their probe.

Preliminary investigation revealed that husband of the 42-year old deceased passed away some years ago. Apart from farming, Dileshwari worked as an assistant in an Anganwadi and used to cook khichdi. She has two children – a daughter and a son. Daughter is married while son is studying in Nagpur.

Almond Board of California’s Indian unit holds Healthy Cookout session in Nagpur

Nagpur: Regular consumption of almonds is beneficial to the human body. Almonds are rich in various vitamins and proteins and hence good for health, said noted nutritionist Meghana Kumare.

She was speaking at a cookout session organised by Indian unit of Almond Board of California in the city on Tuesday. Noted chef Vishnu Manohar also graced the occasion and shared his thoughts on rich qualities of almonds.

Kumare said almond contain high value of Vitamin E, proteins, potassium carbohydrates and are rich in fibers. They are also anti-oxidants and regular consumption of almonds keeps one healthy, she said. Almonds contain unsaturated fats and are not harmful for heart, she informed adding, they can be given to the cardiac patients too.

Snacking smart with almonds is a great way to lead a healthy lifestyle. They are naturally high in dietary fibre and low in sugars,” she informed.

Nuts like almonds are a healthy option, are also traditionally considered festive and hence can be used to prepare various snacks that you can serve during festivals. Almonds are easy and quick to flavour and go with just about any spices.”

To a question by Manohar, Kumare said use of fry almonds should be avoided as they burn its natural properties, besides, oil is not good for health. However, roasted almonds can be taken in the diet, she informed.

Three homemakers of the city Rohini Deshkar, Swati Gupta and Megha Chitare prepared two recipes each with almond as the main ingredient, which were judged by Kumare and Manohar.

But still, technical issues continue to plague parents

Nagpur: Around 675 schools in Nagpur district have selected 5701 students for admissions in 25 per cent seats under Right to Education (RTE). Out of the 5701 selected students, 1789 students have taken admissions. There are total 7204 seats in 25 per cent quota for economically weaker sections of society under RTE.

But there are issues which still bother parents. Shahid Sharif, Chairman of RTE Action Committee, said technical issues continue to plague parents. Our help centres have received several complaints about the mapping issues. What has happened is that when parents apply online they have to mark their location on the Google maps software. But this is still not foolproof even through the problems were pointed out last year also, said Sharif. He claimed that when the location is marked with the balloon online, the marking is not accurate. “When the location is not marked accurately, this application will be disqualified. The student’s entire year is gone even though it’s no fault of his/her,” Sharif said.

The entire RTE admission process has been shifted online and hence it is tech dependent. The software is managed by National Informatics Centre (NIC) from one of its officers in Pune. Shairf said, “There are parents who say they have not received confirmation message about their admission application status. If the children are suffering because of such issues then there needs to be major changes made to the RTE admission process,” said Sharif.

Sharif further said that those schools denying admissions to eligible students will face action from Education Officer. The single parent under SC/ST category will have to submit an affidavit and WCD application. Many parents were asked to submit receipt of caste certificate but they submitted wrong receipts saying that they received the same receipts from Setu Centres of Collectorate. Parents should not mislead the administration and submit proper documents. For residential proof, even tax receipt and rent receipt will also be accepted.
