Aapli Bus

Nagpur: Taking serious cognisance of a series of news reports by sources on lack of conductors affecting smooth operations of Aapli Bus, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s transport department has issued termination notice to M/s Security and Intelligence Services (India) Limited for unsatisfactory and deficient performance.

To ensure smooth city bus operations, the NMC had appointed two ticketing agencies — Security and Intelligence Services (SIS) and Unity Infrastructure. SIS was supposed to provide 300 conductors, while Unity 1,200 and the two agencies together to operate 320 buses. Even the Delhi Integrated Multimodal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS), which is assigned to monitor the entire operations, had informed the NMC about the Aapli Bus service being affected due to lack of conductors.

SIS was supposed to provide fare collection personnel or conductors for 109 buses associated with Orange Depot at Hingna and was assigned to provide fare collection service on the scheduled bus services prior to a bus’s departure. However, the agency has not been able to provide adequate number of conductors thus causing loss to the tune of over Rs3 crore. In a letter to SIS, the NMC’s transport manager Shivaji Jagtap stated that the firm grossly failed to deploy adequate number of conductors commensurate the number of the scheduled services for the past several months.

Due to unavailability of SIS conductors, the NMC had to cancel 2,419 buses between January and September this year, the notice revealed. Even though default charges have been levied on SIS for such deficiencies with repeated strong advices to cure the deficiencies, the former has not taken any remedial steps to arrest the decline in the performance. The firm has also failed to deposit statutory payments like provident fund, ESI etc pertaining to fare collection personnel thus causing grave violation of labour laws, the notice read. In view of the aforementioned circumstances and left with no other option, contract with the agency stands terminated 30 days from the date of issue of the letter on November 1.

Besahara in Sahara… and the forsaken ‘Bharatmata’

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

“Welcome to Sahara homes” says a board outside the gates of the Sahara City on Wardha road.

It was once touted to be the place to live in New Nagpur, but even before you go in the gate, you can see the jungle that is not just encroaching the Township, but will soon engulf it completely if no action to clean up and maintain is forthcoming.

A desultory guard, accompanied by a big mongrel dog, makes way to the gate asking you to make an entry. They are still going through the gestures as if this were a fully occupied, thriving gated colony where the next step will be the guard calling the occupant on intercom to confirm he is expecting guests. But he will do no such thing since there are no intercoms, no CCTV…not even clean drinking water available to the few residents who live within.

On paper, this still looks like an attractive living option, where each building has three lifts, and each 3 bedroom flat has 4 A/Cs fitted by Sahara.

But now only one lift works, quite sporadically. There is zero maintenance of it, so display panel is already dysfunctional. In the A & B wings where is some sign of ‘human life’, on some floors only. Yet, there are no lights provided on the landings or in the corridors.( “We will put the light bulbs, you just give us power connection” entreat residents. “Will have to get clearance from Lucknow” is the reply. Lucknow meanwhile – is deaf, dumb and BLIND.)

” No communication or request for action, even information, that is sent to Sahara office in Lucknow is ever replied to. I have sent Registered letters, which have all come back” says Shekhar Mazumdar who lives in the B block.

So you will find a torch handy in the drawing room of any ‘occupied’ Sahara flat. In case of an emergency, if they have to make way down the steps, it will be a life saver.

“When we bought the place and moved here, there were beautifully manicured lawns in front, and about 50 guards used to have a parade and a change of guard every evening. Now there are weeds instead of lawns and just 2 – 3 guards left. The rest went on strike due to non payment of salaries and left before Diwali. That is the usual story…” I am told.

Inside the Sahara City what you see is a Ghost Town

Immediately beyond the gates are the building complex A and B, which, like I said, have a little occupancy.

As you drive beyond this point however the thicket and the bramble bush intensifies. About 400 meters down the road, the bramble has covered the tiled footpath completely. There is no sign of it at all. Later on, even the road gets narrowed by the bush.

Hidden partially or wholly by the bush are half built buildings, completely deserted, where one would not dare to enter, even in bright sunlight. They are not buildings anymore, they are part of the jungle. (And make ideal hiding places for wild life, as acknowledged by Forest Officers themselves.)

Tragically many of these half built and abandoned buildings HAVE BEEN PAID FOR FULLY. Life savings ‘invested’ in homes that are part of the wild now.

But among the shrubs one spies signs of some human presence again!

The houses of Kohli and Mishra

‘Kohli & Mishra residence ‘ say the boards pointing towards the direction. Yes, these two families are the ONLY residents of a 4 bedroom bungalow and a row house respectively among the dozens being built. They live on the far edge of the city, adjacent to the cross roads fondly named Bharatmata chowk by the residents.

“There were to be no temples or Gods of any particular Religion installed inside the Sahara city, we were all Indians first and foremost so we named this place Bharatmata!” informs a lady living here.

“It used to be our meeting place; our picnic point some years ago. We would bring our dabbas, play music and have ourselves a party!” Says Anu.

“When my sons visited we would be out walking around till 12 midnight! My children loved our house here and we never felt lonely” says Mrs. Mishra, adding sadly ” but all that has changed now.”

First the growing weeds and shrubs spoiled the lure of ‘Bharatmata’ and then people began sighting wild animals.

“Began with deer first…we were happy to see them! Then flocks of wild boar made their appearance; we began seeing other wild things like porcupines, Monitors ( huge lizards)… and then when a python was seen hanging from Mr. Kohli’s place on evening, we just stopped the picnics. Now with the ‘sighting’ of a leopard/ tiger we don’t even step out after dark” says Mrs. Mishra.

The Mishras have a house within the city near Medical college square too. They are maintaining both but live in Sahara.

“If we live here, that house in the city is easy to maintain. We go once a week and get it cleaned. If we lock and leave this house, in two days the forest will take over” says Mr. Mishra.

Mr and Mrs Kohli, who have a well appointed , beautiful 4 bedroom bungalow with a huge lawn and garden in front said they were proud of their house till recently.

” We were happy living in this isolated corner, close to nature. But now, every morning when my wife steps out for a walk I am filled with dread and foreboding. ‘Will she come back safe?’ is all I worry about!” Says Mr. Kohli.

His worry is not really far fetched. When we were doing a round of the place in our car, just a stone’s throw away from his house, next to the boundary wall which is broken in many places, we saw suspicious pug marks on a sand pile. They were definitely not the prints of a dog’s paws. One dog was killed, the rest have just vanished!

Seeing the pug marks, and surrounded by the bushes, even the eerie silence of 4 p.m. seemed scary.

“At nights , we hear roars of wild animals making us feel jittery” says Kohli and then adds in a jovial way ” may be I should change my home into a wild life resort? I have two unused bedrooms upstairs, I could offer them to wild life enthusiasts to stay!”

But the party goes on…

After meeting a few residents we return to the gate.

But we are not allowed to leave , there is another party happening in the parking lot near Building B.
We are told we will get to meet the rest of the Sahara residents at the pot luck dinner which is in honour of the birthday of one Mr. Baijal.

” We have one or even two parties every month, we really don’t need an excuse” people say.

When we go down for the dinner party, we see a maximum of 25 pax. These are the only families living in Sahara!! (Originally meant for thousands!)

There are some more stags working in MIHAN and some trainee nurses of a nearby hospital. They don’t socialize much.

There is warm ‘fellowship’ with delicious home cooked food. The men segregate to one corner discussing politics, the women are busy arranging the buffet, coaxing the men to eat food ‘while it’s hot’ and discussing day to day happenings.

It is heart warming to see, how indomitable the human spirit is. In the midst of this wild terrain, and ghostly shadows of half built buildings one could have become depressed and frustrated. But yet, here are people – some of them even living on rent – who exist here as one big, happy family! (May be if the township had been full, you would not see such bonhomie. There would be state wise, language wise cliques and families would have kept to themselves. There would be squabbles about parking, loud music and other petty matters…)

May be sweet are the fruits of adversity also!

Mr. Subroto Roy, Managing ‘Worker’ of Sahara, you should join such a party one evening in your own township. You might rejoice seeing people being happy in such conditions – not in spite of you but despite of you!!!

Granted with the SC ban on selling of properties, your hands are tied somewhat. But what prevents you from spending a little money to keep the ‘Sahara city’ free of bushes, have the grass cut back and at least keep the half built buildings approachable? You will not be doing anyone any favour, you have collected Rs. 10 lakhs for ‘maintenance’ from all the properties you sold here – which are many, despite low occupancy. 50% to 80% payments have been made on many others.

Or may be one should just remember your great Life Mantra:

“Nobody does anything for anyone. All do for themselves either for more and more material gains or to save and escape from any kind of material losses or from mental-emotional dissatisfaction or for getting more and more mental-emotional satisfaction. Therefore, no one sacrifices for anyone. When no one does anything for anyone, there is no justification in expecting any returns.” Subroto Roy

Prof Vinay Kumar Srivastava, Director, Anthropological Survey of India, in his address, exhorted the human behavioural scientists to study the behavioural patterns, religious, emotional and cultural bonding of the people and their beliefs attached to such mega congregations. The in-depth analysis of the geographical locations, transmigration of the populace, massive logistic and administrative challenges faced in organizing the religious fairs, discourses, art melas, music and cultural festivals will bring out definitive solutions in better organization of such mega events which brings different communities together for religious and tourism purposes.

The Kumbh also sees the presence and participation of sadhus belonging to various Akharas and their interaction with the common people. Kumbh is an excellent example of how a temporal town emerges for some time which again get dismantled in the end. Kumbh Melas are held periodically in Hardwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain.

Nagpur: In a jolt to the prime accused in the CP Club brawl case, the Sessions Court has on Friday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Jaspreet Singh Tuli. The Judge D Surana pronounced the order orally rejecting the plea of accused Tuli. The exact reasons for rejecting the anticipatory bail plea of accused Tuli will be known by afternoon on Saturday.

The case pertains to the bloody attack on a reputed businessman during the Diwali Milan programme organised at CP Club recently. The Sessions Court had reserved order on anticipatory bail plea filed by accused Jaspreet Singh Tuli.

It is pertinent to recall that after the murderous assault on CP Club member and businessman Brijesh Khemka, the accused had fled the spot. Sadar Police had registered an offence under Sections 324, 323, 506, 34 of the IPC against Jaspreet Singh Tuli and two others. Later, Section 326 was added against the accused. During the hearing on Friday, the prosecution strongly opposed grant of any further protection to accused and charged him with not co-operating in the police investigation. The prosecution further alleged that the accused had been deceptive and was coming up with new versions every time he was interrogated. Likewise, accused had not surrendered incriminating material of the crime and had not disclosed names of other two co-accused. The prosecution claimed that accused was a trespasser in the CP Club premises and he had not disclosed as to under whose membership he had entered as a guest in the club premises. There was grave threat that the accused would tamper with evidence.

Adv Pankaj Shende appeared for the accused. Adv Jayant Aloni appeared for the State.

Fake medicine

Nagpur: The Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) is gearing up to corner State Government over acute shortage of medicines being faced by GMCH and Mayo Hospital in city. Taking a serious view of the matter, MARD has shot a 15-demand letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and warned of ‘Rasta Roko’ agitation if their demands are not met by December 20.

The letter sent to Chief Minister has been signed by Central MARD President Lokeshkumar Chirvatkar, Secretary Vinay Bajaj and other doctors. The MARD letter said, “There is vast gap between demands of government hospitals and supply on medicine front. The acute shortage of medicines poses enormous hardships not only to patients but resident doctors as well.”

MARD further demanded that the State Government should set up a state-level audit committee and its report should be posted on the government website every six months. Shortage of medicines had led to beating of resident doctors in Mumbai’s JJ Hospital and Aurangabad Hospital. Moreover, the system to provide passes to the relatives of patients in government hospitals in Nagpur, Yavatmal and Akola has not been implemented even after one and a half year. The alarm system at JJ, Akola Hospital, Mayo Hospital and Latur Hospital has not been activated as yet, MARD said in its letter.

The resident doctors demanded an independent probe into all these aspects. The MARD has also demanded Rs 15,000 hike in stipend.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The Social Service Branch (SSB) of Crime Branch nabbed a notorious pimp who was running online flesh trade. Cops have also rescued a woman brought from Delhi by the pimp. The woman was lodged in a posh hotel in city.

The Crime Branch rounded up the ‘dalal’ named Maya who has been offering services of various women through a portal known as ‘Skokka.com’. The portal link was available through website known as ‘Nagpur Escorts’. The accused Maya had deployed two ‘escort’ named Atish Rameshwar Khadse (38), a resident of Gorewada. Atish used to ferry the women in his car to prospective clients. He would first send explicit photograph of the woman to the customers on their Whatsapp. If selected, the women were then taken to the clients. The pimp was operating a high profile sex racket as she served the ‘elite’ clientele. Rooms in many hotels are booked for this high-profile business. Online flesh trade has been ‘thriving’ in the Second Capital City of Nagpur with high-profile clientele ‘preferring’ foreign women. Cops had busted a similar sex racket in October.

The Crime Branch sleuths had received a specific information that flesh trade is being run through ‘Skokka.com’. The cops also came to know that a notorious pimp named Maya was operating the website known as ‘Nagpur Escorts’. Acting on the tip-off, cops deployed a decoy customer. This decoy made online contact and sought a woman. The decoy customer then was provided the phone number of Khadse. Khadse told him that he is sending image of a woman on Whatsapp. As the police decoy ‘confirmed’ a woman, Khadse asked her to go to Poonam Chamber. Soon the decoy also reached the spot where the sleuths of Crime Branch were already laid a trap. Cops nabbed Khadse and rescued the woman who was brought from Delhi. The woman used to take Rs 5000-10000 from every client.

According to sources, the kingpin of this online flesh trade allegedly is Puja alias Maya Gopal Rao, a native of Bhilai in Chhatisgarh. This accused used to stay on rent in Nagpur at Flat No. C-4, Neelkamal Society Apartment, Bajaj Nagar. The accused Puja alias Maya operated high-profile online sex trade, involving women from many cities and also foreigners.

The action was carried out by Social Service Branch PIs Vikarm Goud, Meena Jagtap, PSI Smita Sonavane, ASIs Damodar Rajurkar, Subhash Khedkar, constables Vijay Gaekwad, Shitalaprasad Mishra, Mukunda Garmode, NPC Surekha Sandekar, sepoys Pralhad Dole, Chhaya Raut, Sadhana Chauhan under the guidance of DCP (Crime) Sambhaji Kadam.

Dr. Arneja conducts first non-surgical valve replacement in Central India

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: In another first to his credit, Dr. Jaspal Arneja , Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Arneja Heart and Multi-specialty Hospital, Nagpur, has become the first cardiologist in Central India to conduct a non-surgical valve replacement.

A team of doctors performed this exclusive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) surgery. Dr. Arneja also did the stenting of a narrowed vessel of the same patient. The procedure lasted 1 ½ hours and was successful one. The patient has made a complete recovery and has become mobile from the first day after the procedure.

Addressing a press conference here just after a day of the procedure with the patient seated by his side, Dr. Arneja said, “Percutaneous aortic valve replacement is a new treatment option for patients of critical aortic stenosis, in whom surgical risk is high as it carries increased morbidity. This is the first case of non-surgical aortic valve replacement in this region and comes as a boon to patients of Central India. Elderly patients suffering from this critical disease would benefit greatly from this new technology. Valve replacement is done from the groin and the patient can become completely active the next day after the procedure. This is a completely non-surgical technique and the groin site is repaired non-surgically immediately after the procedure,” Dr Arneja said.

The earlier surgical aortic valve replacement is a supra major surgery, opening the chest, putting the patient on a heart lung machine after stopping the heart and replacing the valve and required about 10 days of hospitalization. In this new technique done at Arneja Heart ospital the entire procedure is done under local anesthesia with conscious sedation just with a needle puncture in the groin like angioplasty. It requires only two to three days of hospitalization. The patient received MYVAL, the only indigenous Indian made valve from MerilLifesciences which has just received DCGI approval for use in the country. This procedure was live transmitted to MERIL center of excellence VAPI, Surat and interacted with leading cardiologist Dr. Manish Parikh(USA), Dr. Ramesh Daggubatti(USA), Dr. ArvindNanjundappa(USA), Dr. Martin Studencan(Slovakia)and other leading cardiologist all over the world witnessed the procedure and provided there the valuable feedback.

Dr. Arneja’s patient was Krishna Govind Pahune, a 83 year old man from Hinganghat who was having symptoms of severe breathlessness on minimal day to day activities. On investigating, the 83-year-old Male was found to have critical narrowing of one of the left-sided valves of the heart – the aortic valve, along with a critical narrowing of the artery of the heart.

Pahune was seen by cardiac surgeons and was found to be a very high risk for surgical aortic valve replacement. After detailed discussion, the Heart Team of Arneja Heart and Multispeciality Hospital decided that non-surgical transcutaneous aortic valve replacement as the best treatment option to her family.

“Narrowing of the aortic valve is a life-threatening disease and normally requires an open heart surgery with valve replacement. Epidemiological studies have determined that more than one in eight people aged 75 and older have narrowing of the left-sided valves of the heart, which is known as aortic stenosis. If not treated emergently, this may lead to severe disability and sudden death”, Dr Arneja stated.

He said that elderly patients suffering from the disease should be evaluated by their cardiologist to review their suitability for this procedure. Symptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) must be referred to a Heart Team for valve replacement evaluation.

The Heart Team of Arneja would evaluate such patients and individualized decisions would be taken to replace the aortic valve non-surgically. The risk of this procedure is comprehensively less than open heart surgery in elderly individuals.

Krishna Govind Pahune was present during the press conference and interacted with members of the media and shared his experience of undergoing the procedure and this was within 24 hours of procedure.

The team of doctors included Cardiologists, Dr. Pravin Chandra and Dr. Nagendra Chauhan from Medanta Delhi, Dr. Vivek Mandurke and Dr Amar Amale, Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Saurabh Varshney and Dr. Avinash Sharma, Cardiac Anaesthetist Dr. Abhishek Wadaskar and Dr. Neeraj Prasad, Cath lab technician Naresh Aundhekar and his team as well as Seema Bagde and her nursing team and research coordinator Anuradha Sambre.

Meanwhile, Dr.Arneja informed that, “We at Arneja Heart are proud to say that we are pioneers in Cardiac Care in Central India. The many firsts that we gave the city are, Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), Rotablator System, Left Main angioplasty, Chronic Total Occlusion Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (CTO PCI), Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR), and now Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Elderly patients with valve narrowing can benefit from this new non-surgical technique.’’

Even drugs for common cold, cough, fever are out of stock

GMCH Nagpur

Nagpur: The roof-top claims of administration that all kinds of facilities are being provided in rural hospitals have been proving to be hollow ones. The situation is that with the perennial shortage of doctors, staff and medicines, patients are being referred to GMCH and Mayo Hospital in city. Many Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the district even don’t have stock of common medicines forcing patients to shell out money from their pockets to buy medicines from private pharmacies. With the weather change, cases of kids being affected by cough and cold are on the rise. But getting anti-biotic syrup and paracetamol is hard one. Patients are at the mercy of gods.

The working of the PHCs in district is also hampered by shortage of doctors. And even if doctors have been appointed, they are ‘found’ missing. Despite complaints, no action is initiated against the erring doctors. In Nagpur district, there are 49 Primary Health Centres and 316 Sub Centres. The PHCs have been facing a shortage for months. All the district and rural hospitals, and public health centres across the state are facing a similar problem.

Change in weather woes:

With the change in weather, cases of common cold, cough and fever increase with kids and aged being the victims. Viral infection also grips the residents. This is a serious problem. As a result of the prevalent situation, patients are being referred to GMCH and Mayo Hospital in Nagpur following shortage of drugs.

Haffkine too falters:

It may be recalled that Maharashtra Government had made it mandatory for all its departments that provide medical services to purchase medicines, allied materials and equipment only from Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceuticals Corp Ltd. Subsequently, all Zilla Parishads in State are supplied medicines through Haffkine. However, due to pending bills, the company has stopped supplying medicines. With no supply, the PHCs in district are facing shortage of medicines. The problem is not limited to hospitals in rural areas but also in district hospitals. Some of the medicines are out of stock. The hospital has now been authorised to make purchases locally, with limited funds. In an ideal situation, the state procures medicines for all the medical establishments and then distributes them.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Waking up to the increasing tourists inflow in the buffer zone disturbing the living pattern of wildlife, specially big cats, the officials at Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) has now barred the visitors to carry mobile phones during safari in both core and buffer areas into the forests. The decision will become effective from December 1, 2018.

However Pench Tiger Reserve and other tiger reserves will not take such a stand for now.

The idea behind banning mobile phones is allegedly to prevent guides, drivers and tourists to share information about tiger sighting that usually results into huge rush at single place. Not only this, the drivers often flaut speed limits as they get information about tiger sighting at particular place in the forest.

Interestingly, the ban came after the videos of a tiger chasing a tourist vehicle in Agarzari buffer and Pandharpaoni tigress Maya and her two cubs being crowded by tourists went viral on social media.

The order to this effect has been issued by TATR field director NR Praveen on Saturday.

Justifying the ban Praveen said that the movement of animals gets badly affected due to mobbing of vehicles at one place which is derogatory to both wildlife and tourists. Also the geo-tagged information and pictures taken over mobiles are circulated across the social media which can be misused and hence the ban. He said that the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) too has issued an advisory to stop the practice.

The field director says many tourists have been seen taking selfies with tigers by going too close to them in the park. “This endangers the lives of tourists. Those found using mobiles inside the park will be shunted out and action will be taken against respective guides and drivers,” said Praveen.

However the wildlife conservationists have not taken the ban with cheers. They have claimed that a couple of incidents cannot be a benchmark to impose such a ban. Tourists are paying throughthe nose and if you don’t allow them to click pictures than it is unjustified. Use of mobiles should be regulated not banned.

Naturalist Himanshu Bagde said that with the ban the risk of mobiles getting misplaced will also increase. Even tourists show their bookings on the mobile which will have then have be surrendered at the gate. He questioned the safety of mobile phones.

The Pench Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra, and other tiger reserves will not enforce TATR decision as of now.
