Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Despite the issue of dengue spread being raised frequently in the General Body Meetings of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the Health Department refuses to wake up from deep slumber. The lethargic attitude of NMC’s Health Department is forcing the helpless patients to go to private hospitals which are cashing in on dengue scare and spreading panic among patients.

Recently, the Chairman of Health Committee had directed the NMC officials to initiate actions against such private hospitals which are falsifying reports and diagnosing ordinary fevers as dengue in order to extract huge money from patients.

It may be recalled, the number of dengue patients increased this year mainly due to accumulated filth and dirty water. The cleanliness drives undertaken by NMC have remained on papers only.

Taking the advantage of the dreadful situation, the private hospitals are taking the patients for a costly ride. The private hospitals, in the name of treating dengue fever, charge the patients Rs 25,000-30,000 for various tests and treatment. The private hospitals spread dengue scare. Many of them are not sending information to NMC regarding dengue patients. On one hand, the government is conducting awareness campaigns and on the other, private hospitals are looting people in the name of dengue.

The issue of dengue spread was raised in GBM of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Corporators had assailed the working of Malaria and Filaria Department. But the Head of the Department escaped punitive action despite a number of deaths due to dengue, malaria, swine flu and other diseases. The members had even demanded suspension of head of Malaria and Filaria Department.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Facing the heat over increase in mishaps involving school buses, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) cracked the whip and recovered fine of Rs 2.01 lakh from 105 school buses and five other vehicles for lack of required documents or fitness certificates.

The action was initiated under the directives of Regional Transport Officer Bajrang Kharmate and Deputy Regional Transport Officer Atul Aade. The crackdown on school buses was biggest so far. The operators of the school buses were found casual as far as fitness of vehicles was concerned. The RTO had conducted the special drive between October 1 and 15 and a total of 275 school buses were checked.

It may be recalled, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court while hearing a suo-motu PIL had directed the authorities to verify veracity of details about school buses, operators, conductors, safety mechanisms and whether other directives passed by the High Court about safety of school kids using bus service are being implemented or not. According to rules, the annual inspection of school buses and vans and autos transporting students is mandatory.

The RTO officials discovered that 105 buses and five autos were transporting the students without fitness certificates.

The RTO had issued show cause notices to such school buses but still the operators did not bring the vehicles for inspection.

Rs 10 crore haul: Income Tax Deptt fumbles, leaves probe midway?

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: In a dubious turn of events, the Income Tax Department seems to have fumbled in its investigation into the seizer of Rs 10 crore from a vehicle on Nagpur-Hyderabad Road recently.

It may be recalled, based on the statement of the driver of the vehicle, the cash was allegedly linked to city-based supari trader Prakash Wadhwani. As the investigations moved further, the IT officials searched the locker business of Wadhwani in Maskasath area. However, in the entire week, only 10 percent lockers were searched. Shockingly, as the investigation was underway, the IT officials received an order from top brass around 3 pm on Monday asking them to seal the lockers and return as the atmosphere was getting ‘dreadful.’ Following the diktat, the IT officials sealed the lockers and returned ‘empty handed.’ On the other hand, Wadhwani was found warning the locker holders that they were misusing the lockers.

According to sources, Wadhwani and over a dozen others are allegedly involved in blackmarketing of supari (betel nut). As import of supari draws 108 percent duty, the supari mafia export supari to SAARC countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries to escape the duty. Later, papers are tampered with in that countries and supari is sent to Kolkata by road and Andhra Pradesh by sea route showing the stuff as local. The supari is then brought to Nagpur through dalals, sources said.

Sources further said that the Rs 10 crore were seized after a tip off by a person who was close to Wadhwani. Enquiries led the IT officials that the money belonged to Wadhwani. Subsequently, Income Tax Department conducted search and seizure operations at Wadhwani’s trading offices at Ramdaspeth, Itwari and Kalamna, cold storage in Kalamna and residence in Ramdaspeth. Investigation had revealed that the cold storage at Kalamna market yard was constructed on illegal land. A huge stock of supari and other material was found stocked in cold storage. Searches at officer showed Wadhwani has locker business in Maskasath.

The lockers are used by 75 percent local supari traders and other businessmen. Sources said that the lockers contained cash in lakhs and incriminating documents. However, on the day of IT raid, Wadhwani reportedly closed the locker business a day before at 7 pm instead of usual 10 pm. It is being suspected that a “deal” was struck between IT officials and Wadhwani, sources said.

On Monday, the investigating officials left the job incomplete and returned reportedly on the orders of top officials. Sources also said, the Income Tax Department is trying to investigate the case whether the ready-cash of Rs 10 crore seized on Nagpur Hyderabad Road in a vehicle has some links with Wadhwani. All the banks accounts and lockers were sealed till further orders. But why the officials of Income Tax Department were asked to leave the job in the middle of investigations? Who was creating obstacles in the investigations? These are pertinent questions and answers lie with the Income Tax Department alone.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Youth Congress on Wednesday staged unique protest on the occasion of completion of four years of Fadnavis Government. The protests were staged on the directive of MPYC President Satyajit Tambe. The protesters performed various asanas to show utter failure of Fadnavis Government on all fronts.

“BJP is ruling the state on false promises. Not a single promise the party doled out to voters has been fulfilled. The party had promised to bring back black money. On the contrary, their ministers are amassing black money,” the MPYC said.

The asanas performed by Youth Congress activists depicted failures of Fadnavis Government such as Maratha reservation, waiver of farmers’ loans, false promises, clean chit by Chief Minister to ministers involved in scams, rising fuel prices, inflation, unemployment, and other asanas on various other failures.

“All assurances like a toll-free Maharashtra and reservation for the Dhangar community were given just to win elections. The four years of the BJP rule has taken the state backward by two decades. The BJP is a power hungry party. Only 39,000 farmers benefited from the loan waiver scheme which was dubbed as the biggest in history by the Fadnavis government. The government has not delivered on its electoral promises.

All sections of the society, including the youth and farmers, are disillusioned with it. The decisions taken to address Maratha grievances are only on paper,” the protesters said.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

NAGPUR: The winter session of the Maharashtra legislature which is set to start here from November 19 will go on for two weeks, it was announced today, with the opposition slamming the government for its ‘short’ duration.

The two-week session will be unique as it will be held in Mumbai instead of Nagpur after 57 years.

The opposition Congress and NCP demanded at the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee of both houses here Thursday that the session should be extended by one week.

However, the government rejected the demand, a legislature officer said. Conventionally, the winter session is two-week long.

As announced at the end of monsoon session, the winter session will start on November 19. It will go on till November 30, the official said.

The number of working days will be eight as two public holidays — Eid and Gurunanak Jayanti — fall in this period.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said that by refusing to extend the session, the BJP-led government was running away from debate on important issues.

The drought situation in the state is alarming and the government is not ready with a contingency plan to deal with it, the Congress leader said.

“We sought one more week’s time to discuss pressing issues like agrarian crisis, drought management, delaying tactics of the government on reservation demand of Marathas, Dhangars and Muslims, Mumbai development plan and other important urban issues,” he said.

“But the government rejected the demand,” he added.

NCP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Council Dhananjay Munde too said that the opposition wanted the session extended by one week.

State NCP president Jayant Patil, who is the group leader of his party in the Assembly, alleged that the government wanted to avoid discussion on important issues.

Generally, monsoon and budget sessions of the Maharashtra legislature are held in Mumbai while the winter session is held in Nagpur, the state’s second capital.

For the first time since 1961, the winter session will be held in Mumbai this year. The monsoon session was held in Nagpur this time after 47 years.

As per the Nagpur Pact of 1953, which eventually led to the creation of the state of Maharashtra, Nagpur was accorded the status of second capital. It was decided that one of the sessions of the legislature will be held in Nagpur.

However, the pact did not lay it down which session will be held in Nagpur. It was decided later that it will host the winter session, the legislature official said.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The wait for citizens longing to cherish the famous and their own santras is finally over. The Orange City received the season’s first santras on Thursday. The Kalamna Market was flooded with the citrus fruit and the visitors could witness heaps and heaps of oranges arranged to satiate the consumers.

The arrival of oranges in the market also hinted the onset of winter. The Nagpur oranges blossom during the Monsoon season in numerous orchards in the district and are ready to be harvested from the month of November or December. The orange crop in Nagpur district grows twice a year. The fruit available from September to December is Ambiya which has a slightly sour taste. It is followed by the sweeter Mrig crop in January. Normally, farmers go for either of the two varieties. The first reason behind Nagpur being called as “Orange City” is that it becomes the main market for the vendors to sell their oranges in Nagpur.

However, ironically most of Nagpurians are deprived of good quality of oranges as the best of the quality fruit is exported to other states and to world market for mopping up hefty money.

The wholesale fruit market at Nagpur has been witnessing the regular flow of oranges from all the nearby parts of the city. The monsoon is the main source of irrigation for farmers in Vidarbha and also a key to ensuring the health of the rural economy. With the ideal rainfall this season, farmers across the region have reaped the bumper harvest of orange and flooded the market in time.
