Green Bus Nagpur

Nagpur: City MP and Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari has apparently prevailed upon Swedish bus operator Scania to continue plying Green buses, according to NMC transport manager Shivaji Jagtap. The company had decided to wind up operations in Nagpur citing non-compliance of various conditions of contract by NMC.

An official statement from Scania said, “We thank Union minister Nitin Gadkari for addressing our issues and extending support. SST and its promoter Scania are proud that the Green bus service was a pioneering effort to run a sustainable and efficient public transport service in Nagpur City.

“We continue to believe that sustainable transport solutions are required for mass public transport in growing cities like Nagpur and hopefully viable business models will be supported by the government in the near future for a clean and efficient public transport infrastructure in the city.”

The buses were taken off the roads despite two meetings by Gadkari with NMC and Scania officials. Gadkari on Thursday convened another meeting related to the project with Swedish ambassador Klas Molin at Parivahan Bhavan in New Delhi. District collector Ashwin Mudgal, additional municipal commissioner Ravindra Kumbhare, transport manager Shivaji Jagtap, East and Central Nagpur MLAs Krishna Khopde and Vikas Kumbhare respectively, and transport committee chairman Bunty Kukde also attended the meeting.

NMC transport manager Shivaji Jagtap confirmed that Green bus operation will resume. According to him, Nitin Gadkari has assured Molin that issues pertaining to Scania bus operations in Nagpur city will be resolved within a month. Quoting Gadkari, Jagtap said Scania will resume operation of 25 ethanol buses without any further delay, though he could not reveal the exact date of start of operations.

In July, Green Bus operator SST Sustainable Transport Solutions, a company floated by Swedish Bus maker Scania Commercial Vehicles India Private Ltd, had threatened to stop operating 25 ethanol buses from August. Later, Gadkari held two meetings with NMC and Scania officials, but it failed to bear any result. Subsequently, the operator had discontinued operations from August 13.

The Swedish company officials had stuck to several demands, including payment of 18% GST by civic body etc. Gadkari assured that within a month NMC will open escrow account, clear pending dues, and will also hand over land for a depot.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: A woman passenger died and 12 others were injured when a speeding minibus rammed into a stationary truck on Thursday on Nagpur-Umred Road, under the jurisdiction of Hudkeshwar police station. The bus was headed towards Brahmapuri while the truck was parked on the road shoulder facing towards Nagpur.

Soon after the incident was reported, cops rushed to spot and started rescuing passenger. Cops had to break open some windows of the bus to remove the passengers, as the door was completely crushed due to the impact of the accident. The injured were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

Cops cleared the traffic at the spot and also seized both vehicles. Hospital sources said 13 patients were brought in, of whom six were let go after first aid. A woman passenger, Shobha Raut, 48, succumbed to injuries during treatment while six others are still under treatment. According to the cops, the truck was parked at the spot of the accident since Wednesday. The bus driver lost control and rammed into the truck in a head-on collision.

There are no dividers on the road, which is why the bus crossed over to the wrong side of the road and rammed the truck. Cops believe the bus driver fled the spot soon after the accident as he was not found among the injured. A case of death due to negligence has been registered against the bus driver at Hudkeshwar police station.

Tekdi Flyover

Nagpur: He works as supervisor in Hari Om Guest House under flyover opposite Ganesh Tekdi temple. He had always dreamed of owning his own shop. Followed by years of struggle and savings, he finally owned that block, under flyover. However as soon as he heard the news of demolition of the existing flyover in front of the west gate of Nagpur Railway Station, the well nurtured dreams of Ravi Wankhede turned into the worst nightmare.

“After years of savings I had managed to earn enough, to buy a shop of my own. However the demolition drive which will start from September 25 has posed a serious problem of my livelihood,” lamented Ravi Wankede as he’s going to lose a shop which he had bought along with his supervisor job at the guest house, both located under the flyover.

However Ravi is not an exemption. This decision has raised burning questions regarding livelihood of several families. There are around 150 shops under flyover which are set to go after September 25.

Panic and distress grew among all the shop owners after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the demolition of existing flyover in front of the west gate of Nagpur Railway Station from September 25.

Another shop owner told Nagpur Today that they have signed bonds with Nagpur Municipal Corporation which enable them to run shops for next 30 years.

“We have a bond with NMC, which clearly states that the shops they have allotted us belonged to us for next 30 years, under any circumstance,” says Jai Avasti who owns general shop under the flyover.

“NMC had constructed these shops, along with the overbridge 10 years back. However when I bought this shop, we had bond of 30 years. They are planning to ground this bridge in just 10 years of its existence. How are they suppose to kick us out even before the contract ends?”’ Avasti said while expressing his aguish.

However, he also mentioned that they have not received any sort of intimation from the NMC so far.

As per the details the Metro Rail Corporation (MRC) will demolish the flyover and will undertake widening of road and other development works there. 50% of the profit from these places will be shared with the MRC. The MRC will also construct Netaji Market near Munje Square.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: When she arrives at the CCD we are meeting at, I don’t have to be told this is Sejal Jaiswal. I see a slim, pretty girl getting off from her two wheeler and know immediately that this is the Nagpur ‘supermodel’ we are waiting for.

For one, she is dressed stylishly, in a wine coloured top and black tights, she is perfectly coiffed and is wearing make up. “Since I have begun modeling, I am very careful of my appearance in public, specially if I am meeting Media persons” she explains. Difficult to believe she has another avaatar as a Physio Therapy final year student of Lata Mangeshkar Medical college, and that she has come back from college just half an hour ago. Dressed and looking like your normal college girl, no doubt.

Tonight, this girl makes her debut on TV in an MTV India show called ” Dating in the dark”. It will be a one hour’s episode aired between 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

What is it about?

“It’s based on an international reality show, and presents a unique new way of looking at what attracts us in another person, specially of the opposite sex. Does just physical appearance matter, or do other qualities also play a big part? I will not disclose more, because I want the audience to be surprised! You will all definitely enjoy this unusual show” Sejal says excitedly.

Dating in the dark is a presentation of MTV and Viacom 18, produced by Banijay Asia Production House and hosted by Nora Fatehi, the Morrocan – Canadian dancer, model and actor who has featured in the popular ‘Dilbar’ Bollywood song. As TV goes, you cannot get a bigger break than this!

So how did Nagpur girl Sejal get so lucky?

“Not just luck. It was a combination of hard work, discipline and talent. I have been modeling for 3 – 4 years now. I knew my goal was TV so I was trying to get a break with MTV for 3 years. Finally, I was selected for this show.”

It will surprise readers even more to know that till her 12th, Sejal lived in Kajol from where she originally hails. Her parents live there even now. It was only for preparing for Entrance exams post her 12th, that she came to Nagpur. And happened to participate in the promotion of film Shootout at Vadala, for which big stars like Anil Kapoor, John Abrahm and Tushar Kapoor were in the city. She was selected to dance with them for the promo event. Which she did self confidently without getting cowed down by the presence of the stars.

It was the first time she was on ‘stage’ and she was noticed. She began getting modeling offers soon after.
Then in 2014 and 2015 she won at two beauty pageants back to back. (The second one called ‘Miss Maharashtra’ co sponsored by Nagpur Today and Honda Motors.)

There was no looking back then. Sejal began getting modeling offers from Mumbai as well as cities like Bhuvaneshwar too. She got to rub shoulders with big models like Dipti Gujral and get trained by Achala Sachdev.

“But mostly I am self trained. Whether it is modeling, acting, putting on make up etc. I have learnt on my own. I observe other established models closely and learn from their performance. I have always been encouraged by my peers and seniors; the atmosphere of Mumbai is very different from Nagpur where your competitors will try to pull you down.” Sejal says.

Did the world of glamour not distract her from studies?

“Yes, in the beginning it did. So much so that after one year of P.T. studies I decided to quit and concentrate on modeling. My mother counseled me to stick to my education till I graduated at least. I am glad now that I decided to follow her advise. I have become so serious about my education that I even topped my college last year” she says proudly.

She will finish her studies soon and after that a shift to Mumbai is definitely on the cards.

“My aim is the TV industry. That’s where I see a future for myself.” She says. “But she also plans to keep in touch with her para medical career. May be I will go in for post graduation, but not in the immediate future.”

Finally we ask Sejal to share her health and beauty secrets. What is her diet, how and when does she work out?

“There is no strict diet that I follow. For breakfast I have a glass of milk, with Horlicks but no sugar, and some fruits or sprouts. I eat normal ghar ka khana” – that she gets in a tiffin from a lady in Nagpur – “for lunch and dinner. Sometime I do give in to the temptation of fast/ junk food, I am a student after all, but then I atone by skipping dinner.”

She loves non vegetarian fare too, but she has it when she goes home to Katol.

“Strictly no drinking or smoking though!” She says firmly adding ” I am in Health Sciences, I know the ill effects of such habits.”
As far as exercise goes, she does Yoga in the evenings.

Now that she has made it to the fast lane of a glamorous career, what is her advise to younger hopeful?

“Be confident, and let your feet be firmly on the ground even if you are preparing for a ‘Starry future!”

Nagpur: In a worrying development, five people lost their lives while eight are in critical condition at Government Medical College and Hospital Nagpur after they all were diagnosed with Scrub Typhus, a life-threatening disease that is caused by a bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi. Most of the victims are from Nagpur and the number is likely to increase.

The disease occurs when a very tiny insect called Chigger Mites bites a person. These mites are only 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm in length and they are found in grass or in bushes. 50% of the people, who don’t get immediate medical treatment after the bite, lose their lives.

The first case of Scrub Typhus was registered in Japan in 1899. Around 30 lakh people in Russia had died due to this diease during the First World War. The disease was also found in the soldiers of Burma and Ceylon during the Second World War. The disease is normally found in South-West Asia and South America. In India, the patients of Scrub Typhus are found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam and Vidarbha.

The disease starts spreading with the onset of monsoon season. It occurs during winter also at some places. Around 10 lakh people get affected due to this disease and deaths occur if immediate medical assistance is not provided to the patients.

At the GMC Nagpur, 13 patients of this disease were admitted so far in August. Five of them succumbed to the disease while eight are undergoing treatment. Four of the eight patients are critical and admitted to the ICU. Kidneys of two patients have reportedly got damaged.

Nagpur: It seems that the practice followed by Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), compelling patients to purchase medicines from pharmacies outside the premises at higher price is not going to end anytime soon. The shortage of drugs is still harrassing the people who bring their relatives in the hope of reasonable cure at the hospital.

Nagpur Today toured the GMC premises and got to the nerve of emergent yet serious situation being faced by kin of patients.

At the medical pharmacy of GMCH, Salma Anis Ansari was found struggling to get the medicine prescribed by doctor.
While narrating her ordeal, Salma told NT, “Out of the 4 medicines advised by doctor, I only managed to get 1, and that is paracetamol.”

Similarly another relative of patient at ICU delved us into his struggle to procure medicines, saying that since past one week, they had not purchased a single drug from GMCH pharmacy.

“My brother’s liver is damaged. The drugs prescribed by doctor are not available at pharmacy. As our patient is in this traumatic condition we could not do anything but to buy expensive drugs from private pharmacies”.

However it is not that the authorities have no time to tackle the crisis in first place but they have chosen to neglect the issue that has reaching at alarming stage now.

It is to be noted that for more than 6 months, drugs have not been purchased by concerned department that resulted into total breakdown of public healthcare in city. Apparently, there is a great deal of delay on the end of state government in purchasing drugs through the Haffkine.

Moreover, no alternate arrangments have been made either to keep the medicinal supply on.

On condition of anonymity, a doctor at GMCH’s ICU told NT that the situation has touched rock bottom now and they have to prescribe everything from outside.

“Today itself, a patient had come with hepatic encephalopathy. Left with no option I asked them to buy Vitamine-k from any of the private pharmacies. Every time a patient is admitted in ICU we have to prescribe most medicines from outside. We do not even have these basic drugs”, he said.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The use of helmet was made compulsory for two-wheeler riders in Maharashtra after strict directives from the court and the State government. But, while on one hand the vehicle-riders are violating the rules by not using helmets, the traffic police have made the rule a source of income for themselves. This can be observed any time at Koradi Naka.

During initial eight to 10 months of implementing the rule, traffic police were deployed at all the squares in the city to take pictures of those not wearing helmets without saying anything to them. The offenders were later served e-challans by post. However, when the action was reviewed, it was learnt that only 10% of the penalty was deposited with the department.

Therefore, the department asked the traffic police to stop taking pictures and instead collect penalty from offendrs on the spot. This order came as a boon for the traffic police, whose income had stopped and work had increased due to the e-challans.

Subsequently, all the police stations, including Koradi, started collecting penalty amount from offenders on the spot. As per information, deals were being done in the department for getting posted at busy and important squares in the city.

A squad of police is deployed at Koradi toll naka under Koradi police station since last few years. The squad normally has six or more policemen at a time and fine is collected from offenders round the clock. When detailed investigation was done by a reporter, it was found that only 10% of offenders are given challans while other offenders are let off by illegally collecting money from them without any challan, thus resulting in huge loss to the State exchequer.

When the reporter tried to capture the evidence in his camera, the policemen on duty misbehaved with him and clicked his pictures. They also asked him to bring permission from their senior officers before taking their photo or video.

The reporter then dialled to the Commissioner of Police and apprised him of the situation over phone. He also connected the CP with head constable Singh, who was on duty there. After the phone conversation, Singh told the reporter that nothing would happen to him as he and the CP belonged to the same village.

Till the filing of this report, no action was taken against the police officials present at Koradi toll naka, clearly indicating that there was a huge difference between what the CP says and what he means.

NAGPUR: Hearing the petition filed by the suspended employees of Meteorology Department’s Nagpur regional office, Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Murlidhar Giratkar of the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the State’s Chief Secretary and General Manager of the Met department to file their replies within three weeks.

The petitioner, Vinayak Nandanwar, and 26 other employees of the Nagpur regional office of the Met department claimed that they belong to Halba, Chhatri and Nahul castes under Scheduled Tribes (ST) and that they were issued caste certificates between 1978 and 1991. These employees were appointed between 1982 and 1998 on the posts reserved for ST candidates. Validation of their caste certificates were done during their appointments.

However, these 27 employees were suspended by the department on 13 August 2018 citing the reason that they didn’t validate their caste certificates as per Section 7 of the Castes Certificate Act. Before that, they were informed on 16 July 2018 about a departmental enquiry into the matter.

The employees have termed their suspension as illegal and challenged it in the High Court. The petitioners have demanded that the departmental enquiry and the suspension ordered be cancelled and the provision in Section 7 of the Castes Certificate Act be quashed.

Hearing the petition, the HC bench has sought replies from State’s Chief Secretary and General Manager of the Met department into the matter.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur : The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, hearing petitions in the alleged fraud by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in procurement of LED bulbs for street lights, directed the NMC to furnish details about the tender published by the company concerned, and scheduled the next hearing on August 27.

On the basis of information collected through the RTI Act, senior corporator Sandeep Sahare had exposed the scam by NMC in the procurement of LED bulbs. Later on, taking suo moto cognizance of newspaper reports on the scam and admitting a public interest litigation filed by petitioner Abhyan Barahate, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court comprising Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Murlidhar Giratkar sought details about the tender floated by the company concerned for procurement of LED bulbs.

On this, the NMC informed the court that the tender was available online and it had to be downloaded to make its hard copy. The court therefore fixed the next hearing on August 27. During the hearing, advocate Shashibhushan Wahane appeared on behalf of the petitioner, advocate Gupta appeared as Adalat Mitr, advocate C S Kaptan appeared for NMC while advocate M G Bhangde represented the company concerned.

HC accepts additional affidavit
During the hearing on Thursday, petitioner Abhiyan Barahate submitted an additional affidavit claiming that misleading information was furnished by the opponent to the court. On this, advocate Bhangde objected to submission of any document at this point of time without prior permission of the court.

However, the HC reminded that it was a public interest litigation and hence allowed the petitioner to submit the affidavit after depositing Rs 1,000 with the High Court Bar Association.

Rs 100 crore fraud by NMC
It has been alleged that the NMC procured 1.38 lakh LED bulbs for street lights at 80% higher cost than the market rates, thus committing corruption to the tunes of Rs 100 crore. As per newspaper reports and the PIL filed in the HC, a 100 watt LED flood-light bulb costs Rs 3,400 in the open market.

However, the NMC decided to procure each bulb at Rs 9,900 each. A proposal in this regard was presented in the standing committee meeting of the NMC and it was passed despite the objections raised by few members.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur : When Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had started concretization of the road from Arvi Chowk on Umrer Road to Medical Square a week ago, the residents too had started expecting that they would soon get relief from the potholes. But within a week of starting the work, the NMC removed the barricades and opened the road for public without completing its concretization.

Now people are in a fix as whether the concretization will be done or not. Meanwhile, condition of the road has turned from bad to worse as water-filled potholes can be sighted all over the road and it may result in many accidents.

Accident-prone road
A week back, the NMC had placed barricades and started digging up the road for its concretization. But the work was suddenly stopped within a few days and the road was opened for public by removing the barricades. The bulldozer used in the work has damaged the existing tar road to such an extent that two-wheeler riders are finding it difficult to play their vehicles on the road. The road witnesses heavy traffic during morning and evening hours and its present condition may cause accidents anytime. The NMC has in fact multiplied the problems of the citizens by digging up the road.

Five months to complete work
The NMC has awarded the contract of concretization of the road to Mumbai-based Unity Infra Project Limited, which has to undertake the work in the first phase from Arvi Chowk to Krida Chowk and then to Medical Square. The work order was issued on 21 Jan 2015 and the company is expected to complete the work by 27 Jan 2019 at a cost of Rs 104,35,02,461. The company is now left with only five months to complete the work. Despite this fact, it is not known as why the company stopped the work within days of starting it.

Advocate Satish Uke

Nagpur : The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Friday directed advocate Satish Ukey to submit before the court details of all the criminal cases registered him, before the court decides on whether or not to cancel two-month imprisonment awarded to him in contempt of court case. The bench of Justice Z K Haq and Justice V M Deshpande fixed the next hearing in the case on September 19.

It may be recalled here that advocate Satish Ukey had filed a petition in the court alleging that Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis, while filing up nomination paper from South-West Nagpur constituency of State Assembly during 2014 election, had not furnished information about two criminal cases registered him. Ukey had demanded that since Phadnavis had misled voters by not providing the information in the affidavit therefore his election be cancelled. During the hearing in the case, Ukey had levelled serious charges against the erstwhile Judge and had requested to shift the hearing from his court.

The court however had taken serious note of his behavior and had initiated contempt of court proceedings against Ukey. On February 28, the court had found him guilty and had awarded two-month imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. Ukey was absconding since that time.

In the meantime, Ukey filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the High Court order. The SC had first rejected the petition, but later admitted a review petition when Ukey had offered to apologize and directed him to approach the High Court.

Ukey then tendered his unconditional apology in the High Court and requested to cancel the order of his punishment. The HC bench however, before deciding on the matter, has asked him to provide details about all the cases against him.

Nagpur police to invoke MPDA against 15 goons

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Nagpur City Police have identified 15 goons and are readying to hit them with stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers and Drug Offenders Act (MPDA) in a bid to curb their anti-social activities. Previously, city police had taken action against these goons but now cops are preparing to charge them under stringent MPDA as they did not desist from their illegal activities. Under, MPDA these goons can be lodged in any jail throughout the State for a period of one year.

On Monday, City Police detained Nishant alias Macchi Dnyaneshwar Gaur (30), a resident of Dadrapul, in jurisdiction of Tehsil police station under MPDA. He was previously detained at Nasik Central Jail for a year. This is the ninth MPDA case by City Police this year. Last year, 36 goons were detained under the MPDA and 30 in year 2016.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay said that MPDA Wing of Crime Branch has zeroed in on 30 criminals and found 15 are fit for the action. These goons are accused in body offences reported during last two years. They are continuing with their criminal activities despite previous preventive action against them. The police are firm to act against dangerous criminals who are a threat to the society and the crackdown would continue to make Nagpur a more secure place, he said. The action was initiated after observing that habitual criminals are getting involved in crime without fear of law. Out of 15 criminals, 13 are in the age group of 19 to 25 years. They all have criminal history since their teenage and have become more hardened over the years.

MPDA is one of the weapons with police that can be used against the criminals who do not mend their ways despite preventive action, including externment. If someone has history of serious crimes, and is involved in two or more criminal activities in a span of six months despite being booked under Section 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act (CrPC) then police can invoke MPDA against such goons. After booking them under the MPDA, police arrest the criminals and send them to jail where they remain incarnated for a period of one year.

Later, police has to appear before the Advisory Board of High Court where they have to prove necessity of applying MPDA against the accused person(s). After being detained under the MPDA, the accused has to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a year in jails. The one year gap is sufficient to break the network of the criminal on basis of which he carries out illegal activities.

NAGPUR: Following a demonstration by the members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and students of Government Institute of Science demanding basic facilities at the boys’ hostel, the Director of the college held a meeting with officers of PWD and other department concerned and assured the students that their grievances would be addressed at the earliest. As per information, the work of installing street lights in the hostel premises was started from Saturday morning.

Due to the negligent attitude of the administration, the students of the Government Institute of Science are compelled to live in dirty and filthy premises of the boys’ hostel behind the Forensic Science College. Stray dogs and pigs are usually seen roaming and spreading dirt and filth in the premises thus creating unhygienic conditions for the students. The non-functional lights make it difficult for the students to walk in the premises in the dark. The water tank in BSc hostel are very dirty and impurity flows in with water from the taps. The doors of bathroom are also broken.

The careless approach of the administration is making it tough for the students to live in the hostels and concentrate on studies. They also complained that the warden doesn’t stays in the hostel all the time. They demanded that looking at the number of students in the hostel, a full-time warden be provided.

ABVP city general secretary said that the work of installing street light was started from Saturday morning. Those participated in the demonstration included Amit Patle, Karan Khandale, Anukrosh Hemne, Yash Gajbhiye and the students of the college.
