Sachin Tendulkar

Nagpur: Sachin, the heart throb, the superhero for many Indians, was to make an appearance in Nagpur as a highlight of the ongoing ‘Khasdar Krida Mahotsav’. Nagpur social media was buzzing with that news, which was expressed by the program organizers as –

“To yetoy!” (He is coming!)

Well, finally, the enthusiastic crowd that was gathered at the venue despite the rain and the thunder was finally told by BJP leader Sandeep Joshi,

“To nahi yet aahe” (He is not coming!)

Sandeep Joshi announced to the impatient crowd that because of the rains, Sachin Tendulkar’s plane had landed in Aurangabad instead of coming to Nagpur so the program was being cancelled. In fact, everything that was planned for this evening, had been cancelled.

The ‘run’ that is planned for tomorrow morning, will however go on as planned.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nitin Gadkari 2

Nagpur: So Modi goverment completes 4 years in office today. We, the nation are getting a big, but not surprise present for the occasion – a further rise of 14 paisa in the cost of petrol. In Nagpur one litre of petrol costs an unprecedented Rs. 85.71 today!!

Well, let us give the government credit for using the fuel price surplus for ‘development’ purposes, as we have been repeatedly told.

What have been the triumphs of this government in 4 years??

A report card is prepared for multiple reasons – to tell the ‘student’ how he has fared thus far; to encourage him to do better if his performance hasn’t been up to the mark, and to spur him on further if it has been good.

But when an entity, a person or a government prepares its own report card, and gives itself flying colours, the reason is just one, it wants to be re elected! So how is the Modi government evaluating its own performance; what ‘achievements’ are being showcased?

Ironically, some of the ‘achievements’ that figure in the numerous full page advertisements of newspapers today list just some of those things that many others would call ‘failures’ of this regime!

Some of them are:
Demonetization, or Note ‘bundi’/ badli that took a heavy toll on the unorganized sector, like agriculture, textile industry and other cottage industries. (Not to mention lives lost).

Implementation of hasty GST – that in many ways was the last nail in the coffin of many struggling ( after demonetization) industries.

‘Harnessing Yuva Shakti’ – How, where??
The most burning problem, according to many Economists, is the rising, rampant unemployment in India today.

2 crore jobs a year were promised during the pre poll campaigning; which calculated to 8 crore jobs in 4 years. Well, the news is that not even 80 lakh jobs were ‘created’ in 4 years… there is no record of how many were lost!

‘Eliminating corruption’ is another tall claim. Then how come so many Bank ghotalas are surfacing, that were allowed to go on despite whistle blowers warnings that were silenced ? (We mean the Nirav Modi case where so many banks, and even LIC, have lost mega millions).

Yet there is one claim that does not sound false… one sees proof of that promise fulfilled everywhere.

Which is the speedy development of infrastructure; and that is thanks to the efforts and leadership of one man, that too a Nagpurian! Yes, our own Nitin Gadkari, the Union Transport Minister.

Four years ago, when he was allotted this Ministry it seemed not worthy of his stature, in the party and within RSS. After all another former President of BJP, Rajnath Singh had been given Home. Arun Jaitley who has not even won Lok Sabha elections and is a lawyer, not an Economist, was given Finance. A first timer like Smriti Irani – who has also lost her seat – was given a significant Ministry like HR. And Gadkari was told to ‘go build roads, and ports and flyovers and bridges’. It seemed like a calculated insult, a snub!

But how this man turned the tables on everyone is well chronicled by almost every news media and paper now. (Read our 2016 article on him… Nagpur Man of the Year 2016 – Nitin Gadkari without doubt)

Where new highways were being constructed at the rate of 3 – 4 Kms per day, he has taken it to 27 Kms a day and plans for 40 soon.

Building 27 km of highways every day, as is said to have happened in 2017-2018, is equivalent to building the Bengaluru-Chennai highway in 10 days flat, or other equivalent stretches like and Kolkata-Jamshedpur or Delhi-Jaipur in similar time.

He has modernized our Sea ports and made them profitable again.

He is talking of deploying Sea planes in our rivers – he already gave us a trailer just before the Gujarat elections, a strategy that definitely helped in regaining power there! – and has been entrusted with the ambitious project of ‘Namami Gange’. The mandate of cleaning out the Ganga river.

There is only one request we would like to make of him when he goes on his flurry of projects, be kinder to trees please! Be more environment conscious…

We understand his focus, his zeal for ‘development’… but we are already seeing signs that his approach is getting holistic also. See how he is going after curbing highway accidents, specially the fatal ones?

No wonder then that Nitin Gadkari has been named the Number one performing Minister of the Modi govt. for the 3rd time consecutively. It should be 4th actually.

He is the ONLY Minister who has ‘passed’ in First class – being given a score of 72% by a survey – while all Ministers coming after him have managed only 50% plus!

So we have no hesitation in calling him the only cherry on Modi’s 4th anniversary cake.

Is that a promise we heard?

Naturally Gadkari has been giving a spate of interviews on different TV channels – Marathi, Hindi as well as English.

Listening to him on TV9 (Marathi) I found one reply very interesting.

Towards the end of the interview, the interviewer asked him ‘if he would like to return to Maharashtra again?’ (In the capacity of C.M. no doubt).

Nitin Gadkari replied most categorically ” No, I am happy in Delhi. I want to remain here.”

Then as an afterthought he continued ” if I have to ‘return’ I would like to go to my hometown Nagpur, I have no interest in Mumbai.”

Was that a veiled reference to demand for Vidarbha – of which he was an active proponent once – being re considered again?

There would be nothing that would propel Vidarbha ahead as having this Nagpurian as the C.M.!

It would be a fitting climax to his political career – to be in the Ruling Captain’s chair, either in Nagpur…or Delhi.

Why not???

GMCH Nagpur

Nagpur: A 21-year-old final year student of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) was found dead amid the shrubs behind the library on Saturday. The deceased, identified as Ashwant Khobragade, learnt to have consumed poison to end life. The reason is still unclear but he was learnt to be under depression.

It’s learnt Ashwant, a native of Bhandara, used to stay at Manewada with his family. His sister too is a student of GMCH. There was no suicide note found. Police also could not trace out Khobragade’s mobile phone which have kept the investigating agency in dark about the possible reason behind the medico’s taking the drastic step.

Senior PI Shailesh Sankhe of Ajni police station said the body had already developed rigor mortis suggesting the death likely to have taken place around few hours before it was being spotted by another medico who had alerted the control room. “We have found the container which had the poison from which Ashwant had poured the content into a mug for preparing a solution before consuming it,” he said

Nagpur: A 30-year-old woman constable has lodged a report of rape against a male colleague for having sexually exploiting her for a year luring with a promise of marriage. The cops, both posted at police headquarters’ subsidy canteen, learnt to have got introduced to each other while working as computer operators at the unit at Takli.

In February last year, the survivor has claimed to have been forced to have physical relation by constable Pawan Singh Thakur, 27, accused in the case, at his residence at Godhni Road. She has claimed in her statement before Mankapur police, who have now registered the offence of rape, that Thakur had forced her to consume liquor before forcing into physical relationship. He had taken her home on the pretext of showing the place. Thakur is yet to be arrested.

Police said the survivor had developed a friendly relation with Thakur while working at the police headquarter-based canteen. As the relation developed, Thakur had started visiting her residence too. He also informed her family members about his intention to marry her.

The two had also enrolled their names for marriage registration in April this year. The marriage was to be formalized in May but he did not turn up and also started to avoid her. The survivor also came to know that Thakur was having relation with another woman which prompted her to lodge a police complaint.

Inside Out : Palghar bypolls give new equation to political relation

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Palghar: Palghar Lok Sabha Constituency in Maharashtra has become a major battle ground of the sorts. Firstly the estranged relationship between BJP and its so called ally Shiv Sena has come out in open with extra fire works. Secondly, the bypolls has levelled ground for Congress and NCP to come closer.

However the BJP and Shiv Sena have the relation bitter than the sweet chemistry seen between Congress and NCP.
There was no reason why the BJP could not have given a ticket to the son of Chintaman Wanga, its deceased MP from Palghar Lok Sabha constituency whose death necessitated today’s bypoll. Instead, BJP chose to put up a weakish Congress rebel Rajendra Gavit from the seat. It was clearly caught napping as Chintaman Wanga’s son Srinivas Wanga protested to Uddhav Thackeray about the injustice. The Shiv Sena’s response was to commandeer a seat that did not belong to the party and give Srinivas Wanga its own party ticket, without so much as a ‘by your leave’ to the BJP, which protested vociferously. But their appeals to the Shiv Sena fell on deaf ears.In a tit-for-tat, the BJP decided to offer support to the NCP-Congress candidate Shivaji Sahane in Nashik in the elections to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the local autonomous bodies constituency last week. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has adopted Nashik for development as a ‘Smart City’, and it was expected that his support to Sahane, who broke away from the Shiv Sena to secure a ticket from the NCP for this election, would effectively put the Sena in its place.

BJP also hoped that their support to Sahane could be used as a bargaining chip in the Palghar bypoll. However, to BJP’s chagrin, not only did the Shiv Sena candidate Narendra Darade win the poll but a closer look at the votes polled by him reveals that the BJP’s attempts to get even with the Sena was defeated by its own party functionaries—there was substantial cross voting from among the BJP voters in favour of Darade. Seasoned politicians and journalists in Maharashtra are still sniggering over the incident. Before Fadnavis had a chance to get over the shock of that defeat, Uddhav Thackeray released an audio clip of Fadnavis exhorting his party workers to go to any extent or any means, even using ‘saam, daam, dand, bhed’ to defeat the Shiv Sena in Palghar.

Fadnavis has claimed the audio clip is doctored and released a fuller version of the same. But the entire episode, combined with the appeal of a minister in his cabinet to the Congress to support the BJP to defeat the Sena in Palghar, has led to not just raised eyebrows but also a good deal of speculation about the sudden collapse of the BJP ‘s famed ability to strategise and manipulate to win elections at every cost.

The BJP decided to offer support to the NCP-Congress candidate Shivaji Sahane in Nashik in the MLC elections, just to put the Shiva Sena in its place. However, to BJP’s chagrin, not only did Sena candidate Narendra Darade win the poll, but there was substantial cross voting from among the BJP voters in favour of Darade. Seasoned politicians and journalists in Maharashtra are still sniggering over the incident.

Maharashtra Opposition parties Congress and NCP iron out their alliance differences amicablyTussles over the Palghar and the Bhandara-Gondia bypolls have caused some heartburn among the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party as well, but they seem to have resolved their issues far more amicably than the BJP and Shiv Sena. It is now clear that the Congress and NCP, which had parted ways during the 2014 assembly elections, as had the Shiv Sena and BJP, have realised the folly of the separation and are now back in an alliance. NCP Chief Sharad Pawar gave the first formal indication of this when he said a few weeks ago that given the impending alliance, the Congress and NCP must contest one seat each in an equal division of the electoral pie. But the Congress’s heart was set on Bhandara-Gondia rather than Palghar, which former union civil aviation minister Praful Patel of the NCP has represented in the past.

Patel was defeated by Nana Patole of the BJP in 2014 but Patole resigned his seat and quit the BJP to join the Congress, citing the anti-farmer policies of the Narendra Modi government at the centre.According to sources, it was imperative for the Congress to run Patole from Bhandara-Gondia as a message to the BJP. For Patole was originally a Congressman and had joined the BJP when he realised Patel’s domination over the constituency would never allow him a future with the Congress, so long as both were allies. Unfortunately for him, the two parties have allied again just as he thought he was well rid of Patel’s influence over Congress leaders. But that was not all. A large chunk of BJP MPs today are former Congressmen who would win their seats on any ticket and sources say Rahul Gandhi believes he can break at least 30-40 of these MPs from the BJP and secure their return to the Congress. Having Patole re-elected to the Lok Sabha at this juncture was crucial to that plan, for it would have sent out a resounding message to the BJP.

However, Patel dug in his heels and refused to hand the constituency over to his long time rival. Leaders of the two parties then decided to field neither Patel nor Patole this time around. Patel is already a member of the Rajya Sabha and Pawar is said to have asked him to stand down in favour of a third candidate in Bhandara-Gondia, who is now being backed by Patole. Whatever the results of this bypoll, which is being supervised by Nitin Gadkari on behalf of the BJP, the constituency is likely to cause as much trouble between the Congress and the NCP during the 2019 election as Palghar has become a bone of contention between the Shiv Sena and the BJP. But the secular parties for now have resolved the issue with far more maturity than the saffron allies in Palghar.Today, there is also less bitterness between the Congress and NCP and an exhibition of accommodation of each other’s interests, as seen from the fact that NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik swiftly contradicted party MP Majeed Memon’s claims on Rahul Gandhi becoming prime minister. During the Karnataka campaign, Gandhi had said he could become PM if his party got sufficient seats at the 2019 polls, to which Memon replied that the decision could not be unilateral and would have to be discussed by all allies. Malik lost no time in intervening to state that Sharad Pawar knew his strengths and limitations and had no problem with Rahul becoming PM.

Since then, the Congress president has been amenable to tasking Pawar with weaving together all opposition parties, including those like Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal, who was absent at the swearing-in of Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy in Bangalore last week, and may have some reservations about the Congress.

Will Maharashtra see early assembly polls? But the bad blood between the Shiv Sena and the BJP continues to spill over with Sena MP Sanjay Raut, who managed Darade’s victory in Nashik, even threatening to offer support to the NCP-Congress candidate in Bhandara-Gondia. At the start of the bypoll campaign, the Patel-Patole stand-off had seemed very troublesome to Congress and NCP. But now the war of words between Devendra Fadnavis and Uddhav Thackeray threatens to destroy the Sena-BJP equilibrium forever. If their alliance survives the bypoll, it will just barely be held up by the fact that they have almost 18 months to go for the term of the Maharashtra government. Else expect the Maharashtra assembly elections to be advanced and held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: With no let-up in international crude oil prices, fuel prices continue to soar in India. Petrol price in Nagpur on Monday, May 28, was at Rs 86.00, 15 paise more than yesterday rate. The cost of diesel was at Rs 72.48 per litre, 11 paise more than the rate on May, 27, with no relief in the form of reduced taxes from the central and the state government.

In Chennai, petrol price was at Rs 81.26 per litre while diesel went up to Rs 73.03 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol price was at Rs 80.91 while diesel cost rose to Rs 71.72 per litre today.

Petrol and diesel prices have been on the rise due to increasing crude oil prices, which is currently trading at $80 per barrel. When the Modi Government came to power in April 2016, the crude oil was trading at $107. While the crude oil went below the mark of $30, fuel prices have not come down, accordingly.

High central and state taxes have been the reason for high fuel prices in India. Data reveal that the central tax on diesel has increased by more than 300 percent, while on petrol it has jumped by more than 100 percent since 2013.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Voting for the Lok Sabha by-poll being conducted in Bhandara-Gondia constituency began on Monday morning amid complaints of EVM malfunctions. According to reports, voting at 35 booths has been temporarily suspended following faulty EVMs.

Notably, for the first time, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) are being used in this by-poll amid rising allegations of EVM tampering. According to the Election Commission, VVPAT machines are used during election process to verify that the vote polled by a voter goes to the correct candidate. After a voter presses the button on the EVM against the chosen candidate, the VVPAT prints a slip containing name of the candidate and the election symbol and drops it automatically into a sealed box.

The Lok Sabha by-election to Palghar seat in state is also being held today along with two other seats namely Kairana in Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland seat. Counting of votes will be held on May 31.

In Bhandara-Gondia, the BJP and the NCP have locked horns in the by-poll, being held after the resignation of BJP MP Nana Patole. Patole, a leader of the powerful OBC Kunbi community, had switched side from the Congress to the BJP and was elected as an MP from the constituency in Vidarbha in 2014 by defeating former union minister and NCP heavyweight Praful Patel. The NCP, which has allied with the Congress, has fielded former BJP MLA Madhukar Kukde, against BJP’s Hemant Patle, who belongs to the Powar community and is also a former legislator.

In Palghar, the by-poll is being held following death of BJP’s Chintaman Wanaga. The BJP’s bickering ally Shiv Sena has fielded the late MP’s son Srinivas in a bid to garner the sympathy vote. The BJP has put up former Congress Minister Rajendra Gavit.

VVPAT EVM Machine
Nagpur: The scorching heat during ‘Nautapa’ seems to have hit voting in Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha by-poll as low percentage is being recorded even as polling inching towards end. Voters’ response is lukewarm as could be seen in low voting percentage. A deluge of EVM malfunctioning complaints also marked the polling even though the flaws were rectified. But the effect was seen in the voting percentage.

The District Collector Abhimanyu Kale, however, said that the faults in EVM machines were rectified and added that the polling stations where the EVM malfunctioning occurred, the polling time would be extended. According to the District Collector, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) are being used in this by-poll. VVPAT machines are used during election process to verify that the vote polled by a voter goes to the correct candidate. After a voter presses the button on the EVM against the chosen candidate, the VVPAT prints a slip containing name of the candidate and the election symbol and drops it automatically into a sealed box.

In the Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha by-poll, 4727 ballot units, 2366 control units and 2724 VVPAT machines are in place.

Former Union Minister Praful Patel sought to know why EVMs from Surat in Gujarat were used in the Bhandara-Gondia by-poll when similar machines were available in Maharashtra. “EVMs were available in Maharashtra. What was the reason for bringing EVMs from Surat in Gujarat. We have expressed our doubts to the Election Commission,” Patel said.

The Election Commission blamed the sizzling summer heat for malfunctioning of EVMs. At the same time, the poll panel termed the reports of large-scale EVM failure ‘exaggerated.’ It said “exaggerated projection of reality” reports of ‘large scale’ failure of EVMs during Lok Sabha and Assembly by-polls in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Amid reports of faulty EVMs from various polling stations, the Commission came out with a statement to deny that the failure of the voting machines was unusual.

The Election Commission clarified that that there were no cancellations in Bhandara-Gondia. Earlier, there were reports that polling was cancelled in at least 35 polling stations after serious malfunctioning in the EVMs. “The reports emerging in some quarters about EVMs failing in 25 percent polling booths are also incorrect. It is clarified that voting has not been cancelled in any booth in Bhandara-Gondia and voting is continuing smoothly after necessary replacements, wherever required,” the EC said.
