banks-use-marker-pens-instead-of-indelible-ink

Nagpur: Banks were directed to start using indelible ink to ensure that people only change old notes for new ones once under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheme to fight “black money”, resorting to a tactic used to prevent multiple voting in elections.

The move by Finance Ministry and RBI was to prevent “unscrupulous persons” from sending people from one bank branch to the next to exchange old notes. Individuals are allowed to swap Rs 4,500 just once. According to Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, the bank officials found the same people coming back again and again. Thus huge queues were preventing honest people from getting the cash they need.

Reality check
Nagpur Today ventured out to different banks and found that many were yet to implement the novel way to prevent multiple exchanges of old demonetized notes. Most of the Head-offices claimed that they have sent the list for approval and once okayed, they will use the indelible ink. Some banks used permanent markers on the end of finger nails and finger on the reverse of palm on the ring finger.

While we were still covering the manner in which the bank employees are attempting this, some people including two ladies approached the bank official to complain that the ink has been erased when she rubbed it.

However, many banks did procure indelible ink and had marked the people who had come to exchange demonetized notes. The success of the move to prevent multiple exchanges of old demonetized notes may not be so successful after all since many youngsters enthusiastically showed how the ink could be removed.

chatrapati-flyover-de

Nagpur: As kids we have all heard and sung that popular nursery rhyme:

“London bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down – my fair lady.

Hold it up with iron bars, iron bars, iron bars, my fair lady!”

Well, in front of our eyes our beloved ‘Chatrapati bridge’ which we all have traveled over since its existence – and loved the peek we got into the Sai Mandir from it! – is not just falling but being pulled down and we CANNOT hold it up with anything even if we wanted to.

Apart from the trauma of watching it fall many Nagpurians, living in that area and also driving to the Nagpur Airport, have to suffer a lot of inconvenience. People in the neighborhood must also be putting up with noise and dust pollution.

To sugarcoat all these issues, the management of the Nagpur Metro headed by M.D. Brijesh Dixit, has thought up many novel ways to make Nagpurians feel a part of the process and turn the
‘tragedy ‘into a memorable experience in which they can all participate!

The ‘programs’ they have thus devised are as follows:

Under the heading ‘smooth dismantling of bridge – Day 2’ they inform us:

“Work of Dismantling of Chhatrpati Bridge on Wardha Raod which commenced on 15/11/2016 and progressed throughout the day & night.

The Technical team of the contractor along with Team NMRCL have been personally executing the smooth dismantling of the bridge. Traffic on Wardha Raod and other nearby roads has been diverted as per programme and as announced by NMRCL earlier. Marshalls of Nagpur Metro are constantly guiding the road users and other citizens on the diversion of the roads as also helping them on traffic flow.

Nagpur Metro has started an Information Centre for the public help & updated information. All information regarding the dismantling, traffic diversion plan, barricading, helpline number etc. is available 24X7 for the citizens in this centre. The activities being performed by Nagpur Metro during the process of dismantling of Chhatrapati Bridge include:

1. SMS Blast Road Show
2. Whats App Blast
3. Radio Broadcast
4. Information Kiosks
5. Ballon Branding
6. Signature Campaign
7. Selfie Contest
8. Informative Brochure/Leaflet Distribution
9. On Site information Center at Chhatrapti Square

On day 2 -Out of 4 spans 2 have been dismantled Today. Three Poclin machines are working and work of dismantling of Chhatrapati Bridge is in progress as per plan. Ramp portion of 3500 Cubic Meter out of 15000 Cubic Meter filling has been removed. About 300 engineers, supervisors, labour, Traffic Marshalls are working day & night on the project of dismantling the bridge.

Finest on-the-spot memory drawings by local artists.

Enthusiastic painters from different educational Institutions and commercial artists painted on their own encouraging drawings on the Chhatrapati Bridge.

So, so what if the bridge is going to be no more as we know it now?

A better and bigger one is going to be built soon in its place. And meanwhile, we will have selfies and drawings to remember the old one by!!

So let the bridge fall – no point trying to hold it up…

suicide

Nagpur: In a shocking incident, an eleven year old school student committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of his mother’s dupatta on November 17, 2016.

ajay-gondane

Nagpur: In a matter of pride for the city, Dr Ajay M Gondane, a Diplomat hailing from Nagpur has been appointed as the High Commissioner of India to Australia. Dr Ajay M Gondane an IFS officer of 1985 batch will be taking up his assignment in a few days, succeeding Navdeep Suri, who has been moved to the Embassy in UAE. Gondane is currently holding the post of Additional Secretary (Political) in the Union Ministry of External Affairs.

Australia is said to be a high income country, whose population is lesser than of Delhi. It is strategically located and is surrounded by water from all directions. While speaking to media personnel, he said that India wants to develop the part as our area of influence. He added that we work with a vision of India in 2030.

Australia has a tough stance towards countries with nuclear capabilities. We brought them around saying strategic needs demand it. We have to defend ourselves. Other countries would not fight for us, he claimed.

Gondane will focus on students in colleges and residencies, and on curbing racial attacks. Improving exports, bringing investment, promoting Indian tourism and helping develop India’s resources are his other priorities. Australia was biased towards whites more than Asians. But they soon realized that work won’t go on without Indians, he remarked.

Having closely worked with Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, Gondane points that she is the most intelligent Minister he has seen. The ministry has generated goodwill owing to Swaraj’s prompt response to public over social media. “Within six months of joining the ministry, she knew me by name and recalled plans which were discussed in an earlier meeting,” he says.

In his vast experience of 31 years in Indian Foreign Service, Gondane has handled posts including Deputy Consulate General of India in New York and High Commissioner of India to Papua New Guinea.

Gondane recalls days in the Nagpur University Library, where students would fight to get their hands on the newspaper to take notes. “When I think of the boys and girls around me, I feel they were under-confident, and didn’t sustain through that phase. I want to tell students of Nagpur to not be afraid of pursuing their dreams,” he says.

banks-use-marker-pens-instead-of-indelible-ink

Nagpur: The demonetization farce is going from the macabre to the ridiculous.

Paranoid over its fears that the ‘Jugadu’ Indians were finding ways of confounding the govt. moves and exploiting loopholes to change their ‘ill gotten’ black into white they are finding strange solutions to defeat such attempts.

One of the brain waves has been to ink the fingers of those who have once changed money – from all notes to new – to prevent them from being “agents of the rich”.

How did this strategy come about?

As a Bank Manager of SBI explained to NT ” we had many people who were not our customers coming to exchange money – we suspect repeatedly. They could be agents who were being recruited to change money again and again, from our bank and other banks too, on behalf of the rich who had hoards of black money. To prevent this from happening, government has decided to put indelible ink, like what is put after voting, to identify these ‘racketeers’ and prevent them from doing what they were doing”.

But how does this system really work.

“Will fingers of genuine customers not be inked when they change money?”

“We will change their money once, then ask them to deposit money – old notes – in their accounts and withdraw money- new notes- from there” replied the Manager.

So even legitimate account holders will not have their money changed again, once it has been done?

NO, was the reply.

This solution is confounding many other bankers acrosss the country though.

“Poor planning in rolling out this programme has ended up preventing lakhs of people from withdrawing money from their own accounts. The decision to mark fingers of all customers with indelible ink to prevent repeated money exchange is like burning the house to catch a rat. This is going to put the public in more difficulty now,” D Thomas Franco, vice president, All India Bank Officers Confederation, said in Chennai.

Franco said that the Economic Affairs Secretary had no authority to take the decision on using indelible ink. “Such decisions should come either from the Reserve Bank of India or the finance secretary… How many marks would bank staff put on customers who exchange the limited amount in two or three stages?” said Franco.

A government official said that they are coming out with operating procedure on usage of the ink. “This will be circulated hopefully by tonight. This should clarify how a person can exchange old currency multiple times,” he said.

So there is confusion and different opinions among bankers about how the ink is to be used.

There is also the matter of enough indelible ink not being available across India. (Only one factory in Mysore makes it for elections). So some banks are using permanent markers – which get washed off easily!

As we said, it is turning into a drama of ridiculous.

HotelKey mobile booking application, self check-in and drive to room are innovations designed for customers which will revolutionize the hotel industry.

This company which already has a presence in three countries – USA, Kosovo and India – had already opened a back end office in Nagpur.

This 12th November, they have inaugurated brand new premises on Nag Road where they propose to expand operations and add key functions like Development, Quality testing, Analysis, Support, Implementation and at the next stage, product marketing – for Indian markets – also.

This move by HotelKey management has been a God sent for many professionally qualified Nagpurians who have been given an opportunity to move back to their families and their home town without compromising their ‘take home’ in the least. On the contrary, they are all moving back with at least a 20% enhancement of their emoluments.

Bhumika Shinkhede is one such fortunate person. She is a graduate of YCC Engg college Nagpur who had to shift to Pune two years ago when she got a job in Infosys. She worked briefly in Mysore and Banglore too before moving to Pune. Permanently, it seemed, since it was a great job and she was learning a lot. She was Functional consultant for client Harley Davidson. Her family was both happy for her and sad that she was not coming back.

But now they are overjoyed that this job with HotelKey has brought their only child back home to them.

“This job is more paying and very exciting too. Plus I get to live at home with my parents so they are not constantly worried about me as they used to be earlier when I was in Pune. It is like having your cake and eating it too!” says the pretty girl.

Sneha Agrawal is another Akola based Engineering graduate – she studied in Ramdeo Baba college – who HotelKey brought back close to home. After graduation she had worked in Cybage Pune for two years before ill health of parents forced her to quit and move back to Akola for a while. In her free time she trained in OCP as Database Administrator and was musing future course of action when she learnt about HotelKey through an article in Linked in. She sent in her application and was overjoyed when she got selected.

hotelkey-1
“With this opportunity I get the best of both worlds without having to move too far away from my family in Akola. I can visit them on weekends , but the thing I am happiest about is getting to go home on festivals! It was such a hassle planning to travel from Pune for Diwali, New Year etc. Most times I was forced to miss them.”

There are approximately 30 such youngsters working in the Nagpur office now. Ritesh Patwardhan, the senior most guy and the office in charge of Nagpur was working in Pune too.The second in command is Akash Rayte, also a Nagpur guy.

They are on a hiring spree and are looking to increase their strength to 55 by year end. By 2017, they plan to expand to 100 – 150 based on the response they get world wide and from within India too. Right now, it is looking very positive and the response has been tremendous.

They have been hired by the biggest Economy Motel chain in USA who are so confident of their product that they have offered funding too. (The name of the group is under wraps pending a formal announcement from their end).

“Why Nagpur?” We ask Aditya Thyagarajan , the Co Founder and President of the Company.

“Because I am from Nagpur” he replies simply. (Though Aditya’s parents are now settled in Banglore the family originally belongs to Nagpur and Aditya was born in Amraoti and lived in Nagpur in his initial growing up years. He did his Engineering from Banglore where he was also an ace Cricketer playing ultimately for the state of Karnataka in Ranjeet Trophy matches. He moved to USA to do his MS and played cricket there too – becoming Captain of USA’s first cricket team- The glamorous Hollywood Cricket team!)

hotelkey-2
Aditya, whose ties with Nagpur have strengthened with marriage to Renuka, Senior Congress leader and ex Union Minister Vilas Muttemwar’s only daughter, says he was very impressed with the caliber of Engineering graduates from Nagpur.

So when he decided to set up HotelKey in USA with co founder and CEO Fareed Ahmed, India, and Nagpur were his first choice for setting up the back end service office.

In fact last year in December 2015, they formally launched HotelKey from Nagpur only.

The message I want to give the city youth is ” Don’t go to Pune or Mumbai for work. Stay in Nagpur, have a great career that will have you travelling the world!” Says Aditya.

Nagpur: As the new currency notes float into the markets, gradually easing the cash crunch in retail segment, many customers as well as shopkeepers are heaving a sigh of relief. However, still the defaulters are dying in frustration of what to do with the bulky bundle of unaccounted currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, which they have accumulated without any accounts. These currency notes have been demonetized by Modi sarkar as a masterstroke against black money, counterfeit notes and not the least, against the giant monster of corruption. Sources informed though demonetization has put aam aadmi to temporary inconvenience but it has certainly become a permanent problem for some of the real estate players, doctors and satta operators in Nagpur.

Demolished hopes of builders
As Nagpur Today checked into the prevailing trend, it turned out that the erring real estate players, who were having the ball with 60:40 game – taking part cash payment from the customers and part through cheque – are feeling the heat of the decision. The cash payment usually goes unaccounted and was not shown into account books of these real estate companies. The builders are now having lines of worries on their face, pondering and brainstorming over what to do with the accumulated cash as Modi sprang a sudden ‘unpleasant surprise’ before them.

A bitter pill for doctors
Similar is the condition of many big doctors, particularly those mushrooming in Dhantoli and Ramdaspeth areas. The outstation patients usually bring cash to them which largely went unaccounted and never deposited in the banks. This has left with huge piles of unaccounted cash stashed in the ‘illegal coffers’ of many of the top surgeons in the city. Insiders informed that a well-known heart surgeon having its sprawling hospital in Dhantoli has been in contact with few local netas who could help him out in making his black money into ‘white’. However, we learnt that netas are also keeping away from such ‘elements’ who can put them into unwanted trouble.

All Close, No Open
Demonetization has hit Nagpur’s satta, also called as matka market, hard with Mumbai kingpins ordering their agents in Nagpur and Vidarbha to keep a lid on all operation for the time being, slashing the region’s turnover by nearly 25 per cent. Sources informed that a major matka king from Mumbai operates the Nagpur and Vidarbha market. Butibori, Takalghat and Katol have gained notoriety due to rampant matka operations. Even pan-shop owners are running satta businesses with impunity with the blessings of corrupt police officials. Though the Mumbai kingpins have ordered to shut down operations but the local agents are managing the business clandestinely on their own. These agents are operating discreetly from their homes or shops but their business too has crashed from Rs 1 lakh daily to Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000.
