Midnight heist in Nagpur: Rs 24.66 booty looted from bizman’s home, teen secretly films crime

Nagpur: In a shocking late-night burglary that has jolted central Nagpur, miscreants looted valuables worth Rs 24.66 lakh from a businessman’s residence in the Mahal area — all while the family was away attending a wedding in Amravati. The crime was brazenly executed and, in a dramatic twist, partially captured on camera by a 16-year-old neighbour.

Teen turns secret videographer, captures criminals in action

The Jasani family, well-known owners of a plastic products business, had locked their house at Jalaram Niwas and travelled to Amravati for the wedding of Sanket Jasani’s sister. In their absence, thieves broke into their home around 2:40 am on Sunday, smashing the lock and latch before fleeing with gold, diamond jewellery, luxury watches, and Rs 5 lakh cash — all prepped for the wedding ceremony.

Unbeknownst to the criminals, a teenage neighbour — casually playing games on his terrace — noticed a suspicious car and two individuals sneaking into the Jasani home. Instead of intervening, the alert teen silently recorded the entire break-in on his mobile phone, providing police with what could be the most crucial evidence in the case. He only informed his family the next morning when news of the theft spread.

Getaway car traced to earlier theft in Saoner

Investigators quickly got to work, analyzing CCTV footage and the teen’s video, which revealed the registration number MH40/CA2140 of the suspicious vehicle used. It was soon found to have been stolen days earlier from Saoner, where thieves had broken into the house of Rishikesh Kashyap, taking the vehicle along with cash, keys, and jewellery.

In a failed attempt the same night, the burglars had also tried to steal a second car belonging to a neighbour — an act noticed only after the heist. Police now suspect the criminals may have escaped via Kamptee Road towards Madhya Pradesh, based on last-known tracking signals.

Wedding joy turns into chaos for the Jasani family

The burglary has left the Jasani family shattered. With their daughter’s wedding just hours away, the festive mood turned to heartbreak. “We had just withdrawn cash and jewellery from the bank. This was supposed to be a happy day,” said a relative, visibly shaken by the turn of events.

A case under sections of housebreaking and theft has been registered at Kotwali Police Station, and multiple teams have been deployed to trace the culprits. Investigations are underway in coordination with Saoner Police, with focus on the car theft link and possible inter-state gang activity.

Nagpur Police urged citizens to secure homes and alert authorities about suspicious activity, especially during wedding or vacation-related absences. “The teen’s courage to record the incident gives us a solid lead. We are optimistic about cracking this case soon,” said a senior officer from the investigating team.

Nagpur woman who crossed into Pakistan to be quizzed by J&K police

Nagpur: A dramatic cross-border incident has taken a new turn as Jammu and Kashmir Police prepare to question Sunita Jamgade, the Nagpur woman who recently entered Pakistani territory under suspicious circumstances. A special team from J&K is expected to arrive in Nagpur soon to take over the probe.

Sunita was produced before a local court by Kapil Nagar Police on Monday after completing her police custody. The court remanded her to judicial custody and ordered her transfer to jail.

According to police, the chain of events began on May 3, when Sunita reportedly visited a psychiatric hospital in Nagpur and began a prescribed medication regimen. A day later, she deviated from her initial travel plan to Amritsar and instead headed to Delhi, then to Srinagar, and eventually to Sonmarg. Due to adverse weather and heavy snowfall, she diverted her route to Kargil, accompanied by her young son.

In Kargil, her son’s health reportedly deteriorated. Leaving him behind at a hotel, Sunita ventured out alone — and then disappeared. To the shock of authorities, she had crossed the Line of Control and was apprehended by Pakistani Rangers upon entering their territory.

Sources reveal that she was interrogated for eight days in Pakistan and subjected to a lie detector test. Once her mental health issues came to light, the Pakistani authorities handed her over to India’s Border Security Force.

Back in Nagpur, Kapil Nagar Police registered a case and arrested her. She was questioned by multiple security agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), as concerns mounted over possible security breaches or ulterior motives.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have now been alerted, and sources indicate that Sunita may be re-arrested for further questioning once the J&K team arrives in Nagpur.

Authorities remain tight-lipped about whether the incident has any larger implications, but with multiple agencies involved and the route passing through sensitive border regions, the case has attracted national attention.

Nagpur: The highly anticipated results of the JEE Advanced 2025—the gateway to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)—were declared on Monday, with Nagpur’s Kaushik Jibhkate securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 139, making him the probable topper from Vidarbha.

While the IITs do not release city-wise rankings, coaching institutes and families have helped identify top scorers from the region. Nishit Jha (AIR 253) and Ramanshu Padole (AIR 286) follow Kaushik as the probable second and third rankers from Vidarbha, respectively.

Focus, football and IIT-Bombay dreams

Kaushik, who aims to study Computer Science at IIT-Bombay, said his preparation involved about seven hours of daily study, adjusting as per test schedules. “Playing football with friends gave me a much-needed mental break and helped me stay focused,” he shared.

12-hour routine and engineering roots

Nishit Jha, the likely second-topper, followed a disciplined 8am to 8pm schedule with intensive classroom coaching. “We ensured all homework was completed during class hours, allowing time to relax later. That balance kept me going,” he said. Persistence and consistency

AIR 286 ranker Ramanshu Padole credits consistent six-hour study sessions since Class 11 for his success. “From the beginning, I was focused on IIT-Bombay. This goal kept me motivated through the ups and downs,” he said.

National overview: Over 54,000 qualify

The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted by IIT-Kanpur on May 18, saw 1,80,422 students appear for both Paper 1 and 2. Out of these, 54,378 candidates qualified, including 9,404 girls, indicating a rise in female participation.

Among 1,87,223 registered candidates, 1,39,085 were male and 41,337 female. The qualifying cut-off for the Common Rank List (CRL) was 74 out of 360, with a minimum of seven marks in each subject—Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. For SC/ST candidates, the qualifying aggregate was set at 37, with at least three marks per subject.

IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Delhi lead top-500 rankings

Zone-wise, IIT-Hyderabad and IIT-Delhi emerged dominant, contributing 139 and 111 candidates respectively to the top 500 qualifiers—reflecting regional academic strengths.

As counselling and seat allocation now begin, students across India take one step closer to fulfilling their IIT dreams—led by shining examples like Kaushik, Nishit, and Ramanshu from Nagpur.

Variety Square in a frame: Of chaos, care, and a catnap in the crowd in Nagpur!!

Nagpur: A single frame from Sitabuldi’s Variety Square in Nagpur on a cloudy Monday tells a tale that’s as much about the city’s pulse as it is about its people. Captured during the late morning rush hour, the image mirrors the beautiful disorder of urban life — where care, chaos, and calmness coexist in their own rhythm.

As the skies hung heavy with clouds, concerned parents carefully carried their toddler across the bustling intersection, dodging honking two-wheelers and impatient auto-rickshaws. Their cautious steps against the storm of commuters painted a vivid contrast of urgency wrapped in tenderness.

Just a few feet away from this mini-drama, a man lay stretched out on the narrow road divider, wrapped in nothing but sleep and the scant shade it offered. Oblivious to the traffic, the noise, and the rush, he seemed to be in his own world — an accidental symbol of surrender in the middle of the city’s relentless hustle.

Variety Square, true to its name, presented a slice-of-life canvas — from those rushing to work, students weaving their way through the crowd, to street vendors calling out for customers — all under the looming promise of rain. The overcast sky only added to the visual drama, casting soft shadows and lending a touch of poetry to an otherwise routine Monday.

In this living mosaic of Sitabuldi, life didn’t pause — it bustled, it worried, it rested, and it carried on — just like Nagpur does every day.

Nagpur’s growing traffic woes: City plans 8 new ROBs, RUBs in Rs 510 crore mobility push

$

Nagpur: The Second Capital of Maharashtra, Nagpur, is expanding rapidly — but so is its traffic, at nearly double the pace. The impact is clearly visible: Long queues of vehicles and frequent traffic jams have become a daily ordeal for citizens, especially in key parts of the city. While the administration continues to make efforts to manage the situation, a major update offers hope for lasting relief.

To tackle the worsening congestion, the Nagpur civic administration has begun drafting its 2025 City Mobility Plan (CMP). The focus is squarely on enhancing road infrastructure and easing traffic flow through strategic interventions. One of the central proposals under discussion is the construction of eight new overbridges and underpasses at some of the most congested junctions in the city.

Focus on long-term solutions

A dedicated team has been formed to develop the CMP, factoring in Nagpur’s growing population and future urban expansion. In its preliminary report, the team has mapped out the worst-hit traffic zones and recommended actionable measures, including construction of new Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) and Rail Under Bridges (RUBs) to streamline the movement of vehicles.

The total projected cost of these infrastructural upgrades stands at Rs 510 crore, and the implementation will be done in three phases:

• Phase 1: Construction of two major flyovers at an estimated cost of Rs 90 crore.

• Phase 2: Development of two ROBs and RUBs with an allocation of Rs 100 crore.

• Phase 3: Completion of remaining proposed works and fine-tuning of city traffic systems.

Areas identified for new infrastructure

The CMP team has identified eight traffic-heavy zones that will benefit from the new overbridges and underpasses. These include:

• RBI Square

• Ajni Square

• Koradi Naka

• New Katol Naka

• Kamptee

• Medical Square

• Manewada

• Tathagat Square

According to the report, these intersections are becoming increasingly unmanageable, with citizens frequently stuck in bottlenecks and gridlocks. The recommended infrastructure will not only decongest these areas but also enhance safety and reduce travel time.

Looking ahead

With traffic in Nagpur showing signs of spiralling out of control, the CMP is a timely and strategic initiative aimed at future-proofing the city’s road network. Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly improve commuting conditions and bring long-awaited relief to lakhs of daily commuters.

Mockery: Defiant contractors continue road digging in Nagpur despite NMC ban

$

Nagpur: Just days after Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner and Administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari imposed a strict ban on all road digging activities starting June 1, contractors and utility agencies appear to be flouting the order with impunity.

On Monday, fresh excavation work was spotted near Old Katol Road Square in the Mangalwari zone, where a private telecom firm was found laying underground cables. The activity flies in the face of Chaudhari’s May 27 directive, which mandated that all road restoration from earlier dig-ups be completed by May 31 and strictly prohibited new excavation during the monsoon season.

Following media reports of the violation, NMC Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar ordered the Mangalwari zone office to conduct immediate checks and initiate action against those responsible.

But the violations are not isolated. Unauthorised digging was also reported near the State CID office in West Nagpur and in the Narendra Nagar area, raising serious questions about enforcement and accountability across the city’s zones.

The May 27 review meeting chaired by Chaudhari had warned that any delay in restoring roads or new excavation activity post-deadline would invite steep fines, police complaints, and even criminal action against erring engineers. Yet, the ongoing works suggest that the threat has done little to deter the agencies or private contractors.

A major contributor to the disruptions is the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department’s ongoing sewerage work under the Pora River Pollution Abatement Project. Over 500 km of roads were dug up across the South-West, South, and Kamptee Assembly segments. As of now, only 100 km of road restoration has been completed.

“We have halted fresh digging in view of the ban,” confirmed PHE Superintendent Engineer Shweta Banerjee. “About 80% of restoration work is done, and efforts are on to complete the rest. Most pending patches are in South Nagpur and Kamptee.”

She added that only essential works—like emergency water pipeline repairs and strengthening of connections under AMRUT 1.0—are permitted during the rains.

Commissioner Chaudhari has also directed that no debris be left unattended, especially in slum clusters where sewer projects are ongoing. Contractors have been warned of fines if rubble is not cleared promptly. The Sanitation Department has been assigned monitoring duties to ensure compliance.

With the monsoon fast approaching, the NMC chief’s directive was intended to prevent flooding, traffic snarls, and public inconvenience. But the continuing violations show that enforcement on the ground remains a key hurdle, casting doubt over whether the civic body can truly hold defaulters accountable.

Much-awaited NMC elections likely by October: Bawankule

Nagpur: Elections for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and other civic bodies in Maharashtra are likely to be held by October, Revenue Minister and Guardian Minister of Nagpur District, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, said on Monday. Responding to media queries at the District Collector’s Office, Bawankule hinted at a possible timeline for the much-awaited local body polls.

He stated that the BJP has enrolled 1.5 crore members so far and completed its organisational activities. “The party is fully prepared for elections. Even if polls are held tomorrow, the Mahayuti alliance is ready,” he asserted.

Referring to the Supreme Court directives regarding local body elections, Bawankule said, “Going by the spirit of the court’s ruling, elections should be conducted by October. They must happen by then because workers are growing restless.”

He emphasized that once elections are held, new leadership will emerge through Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, Panchayat Samitis, and Zilla Parishads. “Without local body elections, local development is not possible. When the Centre, State, and local bodies work in coordination, development gains momentum,” he added.

Bawankule also said the Revenue Department still has several key decisions pending. “Many of the duties currently assigned to District Collectors will be transferred to the department directly. Reforms will be introduced to make the department more advanced and people-oriented. In the future, Maharashtra’s Revenue Department will become a model for the country,” he claimed.

On the issue of appointment of the Guardian Minister for Raigad district, he assured that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is working on resolving the matter, and an announcement will be made soon.

Addressing speculation about tension within Mahayuti alliance partners, Bawankule said that any internal disagreements are resolved through dialogue. “There’s no need for public commentary. Discussions with party leaders should resolve issues amicably,” he advised.

Buses for delivery of birth, death certificates

Bawankule also announced that mobile setups will be deployed in buses to deliver birth and death certificates directly in villages under the Setu scheme. “This will reduce property disputes, and people won’t have to visit the Collector’s office. Documents like inheritance certificates and birth/death certificates will be provided locally,” he said.

He further informed that the Chief Minister has started empowering the CM Assistance Cell. “Divisional-level offices have been established to help patients access state and central government welfare schemes without difficulty,” he added.

Congress workers join BJP in large numbers

In Saoner tehsil, several Congress leaders and workers joined the BJP, Bawankule said. Additionally, 17 elected members in Bhiwapur have also joined the party. “The people’s trust in Devendra Fadnavis and the Mahayuti alliance is growing steadily,” he concluded.

Cobra strikes during rescue: Sarpamitra bitten, Nagpur hospitals caught unprepared

Nagpur: With monsoon rains looming, snake sightings are on the rise — and so are snake-bite cases. In the last fortnight alone, two incidents have been reported in Nagpur. The latest one involved a young snake rescuer who narrowly escaped a tragic end.

On Monday morning, 24-year-old Aniket Uikey, a dedicated Sarpamitra (friend of snakes) from Vihirgaon, responded to an urgent call about a snake sighting in a residential area. Armed with his experience and tools, he began the rescue operation. But what seemed like a routine task turned dangerous when a 4 to 5-foot cobra struck, sinking its fangs into Aniket’s right hand.

Despite the bite, Uikey bravely continued the rescue, safely securing the venomous reptile in a jar before rushing for medical help. But what followed exposed a serious lapse in the city’s emergency preparedness. The first hospital he approached lacked the anti-venom required for his treatment. So did the next — and the one after that.

It wasn’t until he reached Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) that he received the life-saving anti-venom injection.

Upon learning about the incident, members of the Wildlife Welfare Society — including Secretary Nitish Bhandakkar and Pravin Tule — arrived at GMCH to collect the rescued cobra. The reptile was later released into the wild on the outskirts of Nagpur.

Just a few days prior, Sachin Uikey, another local resident, died after being bitten by a snake — underscoring the life-threatening consequences of such encounters, especially when prompt treatment isn’t available.

The Wildlife Welfare Society has now issued a dual appeal: urging sarpamitras to take extra precautions during the monsoon, and calling on all hospitals in Nagpur to stock sufficient anti-venom supplies to avoid further tragedies.

Height barriers installed at Shaheed Gowari flyover in Nagpur

$

Nagpur: The much-awaited height barriers have finally been installed at both ends of the Shaheed Gowari (Sitabuldi) flyover late Monday night and brings a relief to commuters from heavy vehicles on the narrow bridge.

Previous attempts to install such barriers had failed, as they were damaged by heavy trucks on the very first day — on two separate occasions in recent times. This time, however, the Public Works Department (PWD) has taken additional precautions. To ensure safety and effectiveness, rumble strips have been added to the road surface before the barriers. These strips are intended to alert and slow down approaching vehicles to reduce the risk of collisions.

The new height barriers are expected to curb the entry of heavy vehicles onto the flyover and preserve its structure and improve overall traffic flow. Avinash Gund, Branch Engineer of the PWD’s World Bank Division, confirmed that the barriers have been installed following proper foundational work and with all necessary procedures in place. “This time, we have ensured that the installation is robust and long-lasting,” he stated.

Crash test: Newly-installed height barrier at Sitabuldi Flyover rammed by fuel tanker

$

Nagpur: In a turn of events that borders on irony, the newly-installed height barrier at the Shaheed Gowari Flyover in Sitabuldi met a premature crash test — courtesy of a Reliance petrol tanker just a day after its installation.

The barrier, erected late Monday night with much caution and hope, was rammed on Tuesday by the massive fuel-laden vehicle carrying around 23,000 litres of petrol, triggering a tense moment for authorities. Two fire tenders rushed to the scene fearing a potential disaster, but fortunately, no leakage or fire was reported.

This isn’t the barrier’s first brush with doom — or more accurately, it’s not the first barrier at this location to suffer such a fate. Previous attempts to erect similar structures had ended in chaos, with heavy trucks managing to crush them within hours. In what feels like déjà vu, history repeated itself — but this time, the stakes were higher with a fuel-filled tanker involved.

Determined not to let the past repeat, the Public Works Department (PWD) had taken extra precautions this time around. Rumble strips were laid on the approach road to slow down vehicles and serve as a tactile warning. The height barrier itself, officials insisted, was installed with proper foundational work and due diligence.

“We followed all protocols and ensured a strong installation this time,” said Avinash Gund, Branch Engineer from the PWD’s World Bank Division. “This is aimed at keeping heavy vehicles off the flyover, ensuring its longevity and smoother traffic flow.”

Ironically, the very vehicle the barrier was meant to stop — a towering fuel tanker — turned out to be its first and most dangerous challenger. While the flyover survived unscathed, the incident has raised fresh questions about the awareness of commercial drivers and the need for clearer signage.

Whether the barrier’s third time proves to be a charm or yet another chapter in this ongoing saga of “barrier vs. behemoth” remains to be seen.

Nagpur: A major fake medicines racket supplying counterfeit drugs through government tenders has been busted, leading to the arrest of Robin alias Himanshu Vijaykumar Taneja by Kalmeshwar police. Following the exposure of the entire syndicate, Taneja applied for bail at the District Sessions Court. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted him bail under stringent conditions.

Investigations revealed that counterfeit medicines were manufactured and supplied to government hospitals via official contracts. The racket came to light when forensic analysis confirmed the drugs were fake.

Fake Companies and Forged Certificates Used

According to the prosecution, accused Vijay Shailendra Chaudhary procured counterfeit Ciprofloxacin 500 mg tablets (marketed as Recip-500) and handed them over to Mihir Shashikant Trivedi. Trivedi then passed them to Hemant Dhondiba Mule, who supplied the drugs to Nagpur’s Civil Surgeon, General Hospital, after securing the government tender.

Drug Inspector Nitin Bhandarkar collected samples and sent them for testing to the Government Analyst in Mumbai. The analyst reported that the drugs were spurious under Section 17-B of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The packaging listed the manufacturer as “M/s Refant Pharma Pvt Ltd, Gandhinagar, Gujarat”, which was later found to be a non-existent company.

The accused also presented an analysis certificate from “Evertouch Bio-Remedies, Thrissur” and a GMP certificate from the Kerala Drug Controller. However, both were found to be fake during the investigation.

Links to Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand

Further interrogation of Vijay Chaudhary revealed that the counterfeit medicines were purchased from Robin Taneja and his brother Raman Taneja, residents of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttarakhand raided a factory named “Dwarika Natural Formulations” in Roorkee, Haridwar. The factory, owned by accused Amit Dhiman, was found to be manufacturing fake drugs using industrial equipment and raw materials. Dhiman confessed that the drugs were being produced on the demand orders of Robin Taneja.
