Nagpur – Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, today released his new book “Sanghatil Manavi Vyavasthapan” (Human Management in the Sangh), offering insights into the values and organizational practices of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The launch event, held at Vanamati Auditorium in Nagpur, was organized by Rajhans Prakashan.

Speaking at the function, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh (All India Head of Publicity) Shri Sunil Ambekar remarked that “good values often go unnoticed at the time they are instilled, but their true importance is realized over time. Nitin Gadkari has beautifully expressed the learnings he gained from the RSS in simple and relatable language.”

Senior editor and thinker Shri Vivek Ghalasasi, Rajhans Prakashan’s Shri Naresh Sabjiwale, and several other contributors to the book’s development were also present. These included veteran editors Laxmanrao Joshi and Sudhir Pathak, BJP’s Vidarbha Organizational Minister Upendra Kothekar, Tarun Bharat Managing Director Dhananjay Bapat, cover artist Rajendra Kshirsagar, Tarun Bharat Executive Editor Shailesh Pande, and Sanskar Bharati’s national secretary Ashutosh Adoni. All were felicitated during the event.

Shri Ambekar highlighted the inspiration behind the founding of the RSS and its near-century-long journey. He noted that “Gadkari’s experience as an RSS swayamsevak and a karyakarta (worker) in Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has shaped his personality and public life. As tasks become more aligned and public approval grows, maintaining humility and simplicity becomes challenging—yet Gadkari has done so commendably.”

Shri Vivek Ghalasasi added that apart from the RSS and Vidyarthi Parishad, the influence of Gadkari’s late mother, Bhanu Tai, played a vital role in shaping his values. “Continuing to work diligently without thinking you’re doing something extraordinary is an immense challenge—and Nitin Gadkari has overcome it with grace,” he said.

The event included a solo musical performance by Amar Kulkarni, and concluded with a rendition of Pasayadan by Radha Thengadi.

“RSS, Student Movement, and My Mother Shaped My Life” – Nitin Gadkari

Addressing the audience, Shri Nitin Gadkari stated, “My life has been deeply influenced by my mother, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. From them, I received a value-based foundation. The teachings of Balasaheb Deoras, Bhaurao Deoras, Dattopant Thengadi, Baburao Vaidya, and Yashwantrao Kelkar have left a lasting impact on me.”

He emphasized that the book reflects his personal experiences as an RSS swayamsevak. Gadkari credited the book’s writing to journalist Shailesh Pande and acknowledged his contribution during his address.

“Conviction is necessary to take bold decisions and remain sensitive to societal needs. That conviction came to me through the values I was raised with. The desire and willpower to do something meaningful for the country and society were born from these very roots,” Gadkari added.

Mission AXE or Media Axe? Nagpur Police Must Answer Tough Questions

The recent high-profile crackdown under Mission AXE by Nagpur Police—touted as a decisive strike against illegal e-cigarettes, hookah products, and unauthorized tobacco sales—has sparked both applause and skepticism. While the operation made national headlines and appeared to be a bold anti-drug measure, many Nagpur residents are left wondering: Is this enough? Or just a carefully staged media event to deflect attention from rising crime in the city?

Mission AXE: Commendable, But Selective?

No doubt, seizing ₹43 lakh worth of contraband from Texas Smoke Shops and hidden godowns is noteworthy. Involving over 125 personnel and 25 officers, the operation was meticulously planned and aggressively executed. But one can’t help but ask—why now? And why only these establishments?

Local residents and insiders suggest that these outlets were operating in plain sight for months—if not years—right under the nose of local police stations. It’s no secret that the existence and operation of such shops are common knowledge in the neighborhoods they serve. So, what changed overnight?

Some allege that the motivation for the raids may not have been entirely about public health or law enforcement. The recent spike in violent crimes, thefts, and drug-related offenses in Nagpur has garnered negative media attention, tarnishing the city’s image. Was this operation a media distraction tactic to create an illusion of action?

The Elephant in the Room: Clubs and Pubs

If Nagpur Police truly wants to crack down on illegal substances, the next logical step should be targeting the clubs and pubs that have increasingly become epicenters for drug abuse, hookah, and under-the-radar illegal sales of e-cigarettes. Surprisingly—or perhaps conveniently—these venues remain untouched.

Many such establishments operate within 100 meters of police stations, yet continue to flout rules on operating hours, alcohol licensing, and age restrictions. Eyewitness accounts suggest that these venues stay open well past legal hours, often becoming dens of drug consumption, illicit trade, and even sex trafficking. Still, there is little to no record of recent police action against them.

Why?

Protection or Negligence?

Rumors are rife that many of these clubs and pubs function under mutual arrangements with local law enforcement officers. Protection rackets, bribes, or just willful ignorance—call it what you will—there’s an undeniable pattern of selective enforcement.

One glaring example is the blatant promotion of “Saturday Night” parties. These events are aggressively marketed by social media influencers who are compensated with free entry, alcohol, and perks, in exchange for luring young crowds to these high-risk venues. Nagpur’s Cyber Police, equipped with the tools to monitor online content, appears to be doing nothing to regulate this digital advertising of potentially illegal activity.

The Rising Crime Graph: A Wake-Up Call

Recent months have seen an alarming surge in crimes across Nagpur—robberies, chain snatching, gang violence, and drug abuse are now regular headline fodder. Residents are increasingly feeling unsafe. Parents are worried. Businesses are anxious. And the city’s reputation is on the line.

Yes, Mission AXE is a step in the right direction. But in isolation, it feels like a PR band-aid on a hemorrhaging wound.

A Call for Comprehensive Action

Nagpur Police must realize that real reform doesn’t come with one-time, headline-grabbing raids. It comes with consistency, transparency, and an unrelenting pursuit of justice—regardless of who’s involved. If the police truly aim to dismantle drug networks and protect public health, no area, no pub, no club, and certainly no police station should be off-limits.

Conclusion: Nagpur Deserves Better

Nagpur citizens want more than photo-ops. They want their city back.

It’s time for Nagpur Police to show that Mission AXE was not just about optics but about true systemic change. That requires holding all venues accountable—smoke shops, yes—but also the nightlife hotspots that have turned into breeding grounds for crime. And most importantly, it requires introspection: If the rot lies within the force itself, will the axe fall there too?

Because justice, if it is to be believed in, must be blind—and it must swing equally.

Sindoor Controversy Exposes BJP-RSS Tensions Ahead of Bihar, Bengal Polls

Operation Sindoor, India’s recent military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, has not only stirred nationalistic sentiments but also ignited a series of political and cultural debates. The alleged plan by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to distribute sindoor (vermilion) to women as part of a celebratory campaign has been at the center of this controversy. While the BJP has dismissed these reports as “fake news,” the issue has exposed underlying tensions between the BJP and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and the public alike.

RSS and Mohan Bhagwat’s Stance on Operation Sindoor

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat publicly endorsed Operation Sindoor, stating that “India seeks peace but has the strength to teach a lesson if provoked.” He emphasized that while India harbors no animosity, it possesses the capability to respond decisively when necessary. Bhagwat’s remarks underscored India’s commitment to global peace while asserting national strength and resilience .

Alleged Differences Between RSS and BJP Over Ceasefire

Despite the RSS’s support for Operation Sindoor, there have been indications of unease regarding the BJP’s handling of the subsequent ceasefire. Reports suggest that while the RSS advocated for a more prolonged and assertive military stance, the BJP’s decision to halt operations raised questions within the Sangh Parivar. This divergence points to potential strategic differences between the two organizations, particularly concerning the duration and objectives of military engagements .

The Controversy Over Sindoor Distribution

The controversy intensified with reports claiming that the BJP planned to distribute sindoor to women nationwide as a symbolic gesture celebrating Operation Sindoor. The BJP swiftly refuted these claims, labeling them as “fake news” and attributing them to misinformation spread by opposition parties . However, the damage had been done, as the reports sparked widespread criticism and ridicule on social media platforms.

Public Backlash and Social Media Outcry

Women across the country took to social media to express their disapproval of the alleged sindoor distribution campaign. Many viewed it as a patronizing and politically motivated move that trivialized a sacred symbol of marital commitment. The backlash was particularly strong in states like Bihar and West Bengal, where sindoor holds deep cultural significance. The public outcry compelled the BJP to distance itself from the reports and reiterate that no such campaign was planned .

Electoral Implications in Bihar and West Bengal

The timing of the controversy is critical, with upcoming elections in Bihar and West Bengal—states known for their significant female voter bases and cultural reverence for sindoor. Political analysts suggest that the BJP’s alleged plan, whether real or perceived, could alienate women voters in these regions. The party’s swift denial of the campaign indicates an awareness of the potential electoral repercussions and a desire to mitigate any negative impact on its voter base.

Mamata Banerjee’s Challenge to Prime Minister Modi

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seized the opportunity to criticize the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She accused the Prime Minister of politicizing Operation Sindoor and challenged him to a public debate on the issue. Banerjee’s remarks further fueled the controversy and highlighted the deepening political rift between the BJP and opposition parties in the lead-up to the elections .

The Operation Sindoor controversy underscores the complex interplay between military actions, cultural symbols, and political strategies in India. While the BJP’s denial of the sindoor distribution campaign aims to quell the backlash, the incident has exposed potential fissures within the party and its ideological allies. As the nation approaches critical elections, the BJP will need to navigate these challenges carefully to maintain its political standing and public support.

UNDP-backed report bolsters Nagpur’s disaster management strategy

Nagpur: In a significant step towards enhancing disaster preparedness, Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari on Friday unveiled the Multi-Hazard Risk Vulnerability Assessment (MVRVA) for the city. The report, jointly prepared by the Maharashtra Government’s Relief and Rehabilitation Department and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), presents a detailed evaluation of Nagpur’s geographical and infrastructural vulnerabilities to natural disasters.

The MVRVA aims to equip the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) with crucial insights into the city’s risk profile, enabling data-driven planning and mitigation strategies. A standout feature of the report is the creation of a Digital Risk Atlas, hosted on a Geographic Information System (GIS) portal. This tool offers pinpoint mapping of high-risk zones and disaster-prone areas, tailored to various natural calamities such as floods, heatwaves, and earthquakes.

Officials said the atlas will serve as a real-time decision-making aid for NMC authorities, helping safeguard lives and minimize damage to property during emergencies. The report underscores the need for integrating risk reduction measures in urban development, infrastructure design, and public policy planning.

The study has taken note of the climate change and its effects in Nagpur and the visible threats due to over exploitation of resources and its effects on the city populace. At the same time, it has also taken note of the available infrastructure in the city and assessment of earthquake and floods and prepared the map of vulnerable spots listing them ward wise.

The report has also detailed the physical assets and civic amenities and has given rating based on their vulnerabilities and contact accessibility. The report gives a low down of spots that are prone to disasters, they are mentioned ward wise, and given suggestions to the civic body on steps that could be taken to strengthen these weak sites.

The advantage with Digital Risk Atlas is that ground teams of NMC can access the same and take necessary steps in time and ensure prompt response in the aftermath of any disaster.

During the release of report, Additional Commissioners Vasumana Pant, Vaishnavi B, Ajay Charthankar, Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, Superintending Engineer Leena Upadhaye, Transport Manager Vinod Jadhav, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) B P Chandankhede, Satish Rahate, UNDP’s City Co-ordinator Arusha Anand and others were present on the occasion.

The initiative marks a proactive move to make Nagpur more resilient in the face of increasing climate uncertainties and environmental risks.

Next ‘Operation Sindoor’ will be bigger, tech-driven, says Lt Gen Khandare in Nagpur

Nagpur: “Operation Sindoor stands as a testament to India’s military precision, strategic planning, and technological edge. But the next edition will be unlike anything we’ve seen before,” declared Lt Gen Vinod G. Khandare PVSM, AVSM, SM (Retd), former Principal Advisor to the Ministry of Defence and ex-Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency, during an event in Nagpur on Friday.

Speaking at a seminar organized by Prahar Samaj Jagruti Sanstha at the Chitnavis Centre’s Banyan Hall in the city, Lt Gen Khandare emphasized that future military operations will be heavily driven by emerging technologies. “The next Operation Sindoor will be on a broader scale — leveraging advanced satellite integration, AI-based sensors, and cyber capabilities to ensure precise and swift action with minimal risk to human life,” he said.

Highlighting the sophistication of the original operation, he noted, “Not a single aircraft crossed enemy lines, no boots on the ground — yet we struck targets with pinpoint accuracy. This is the evolution of modern warfare.”

He also underlined the critical role of cyber and narrative warfare in today’s military strategy. “While Pakistan continued its familiar disinformation campaign, this time India countered it not just with action, but with irrefutable proof—satellite imagery and video evidence. That’s how you dominate both on-ground and in the information domain.”

“Behind this victory we learned many things which will definitely change future warfare and, as a country, we should think about our cyber sovereignty,” expressed the General. “Without cyber hygiene the cyber sovereignty of the country is not possible and every individual should work on it,” said Lt Gen Khandare.

Cyber hygiene refers to the practices and procedures that individuals and organisations use to maintain the security and resilience of their systems, devices, networks, and data. “Today, every individual should be aware of cyber hygiene and then we can get sovereignty in this field,” he added. While talking about self-reliance, Lt Gen Khandare said, “Earlier, we relied on Transfer of Technology, but it was slow and costly. Now, with technology cycles shortening every 18 months, we have shifted to Joint Ventures, like BrahMos, AK-203, and C295 with Airbus — which are proving successful.”

He further added, “There is a misconception that cyber defence needs a formal army. But countries like Israel,Russia, and China rely on patriotic citizens who act without orders. China, for example, has a massive cyber force guided by the CCP, not a formal military structure. We also need something similar.”

Lt Gen Khandare also criticised the role of the media during ‘Operation Sindoor’ and advised the Indian media to be more sensible and think beyond their channel’s promotion. While he also suggested including the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the country’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for better planning for the role of media in warlike situations.

Flt Lt Shiwalee Deshpande, Director, Prahar, moderated the event. Flt Lt Deshpande felicitated Lt Gen Khandare in the beginning. Many veterans from the Indian armed forces and students were present during the programme.

Rs 4 lakh cash, laptop seized from wife of Nagpur ‘psycho’ counsellor Ghaywat

Nagpur: In a major breakthrough in the chilling sexual exploitation case involving self-styled child counsellor Vijay Ghaywat, Nagpur police have seized Rs 4 lakh in cash, a laptop, multiple pen drives, and other digital material from his wife Mrunal Ghaywat and close associate Pallavi Belkhode. The seizure is likely to provide crucial leads and possibly uncover more victims of the alleged paedophile.

According to police sources, both Mrunal Ghaywat (33) and Pallavi Kishor Belkhode were arrested earlier this week after evading arrest for over six months. They were interrogated on Friday but reportedly did not cooperate with the investigation.

Vijay Ghaywat, who ran the Manovikas Mind Development Centre, has been accused of sexually exploiting several minor girls under the guise of counselling and training sessions since 2014. Police had earlier found objectionable videos involving minors on his mobile phone. He faces charges under the stringent POCSO Act as well as the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

After the case came to light, Mrunal and Pallavi went underground, only to resurface recently. They had rented a house in Nagpur’s Wathoda area, where the police made the latest recovery. A two-wheeler registered to the accused and a bag containing Vijay Ghaywat’s clothes were also seized from the premises, suggesting ongoing coordination among the trio even while they were absconding.

Investigators are now analyzing the seized digital content for further evidence. The material could potentially reveal additional victims and deepen the scope of the case, which has already sent shockwaves through the city.

Immediate compensation for rain affected farmers: Bawankule

Amravati: Farmers in the district suffered extensive losses due to unseasonal rain and storms in April and May. To ensure that affected farmers receive prompt compensation, the government will expedite the process, said Revenue Minister and Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Bawankule, after reviewing the damage caused in both months, directed the Divisional Commissioner and District Collector to immediately prepare and submit damage assessment reports (panchnamas) to the State Ministry. Based on these reports, necessary funds will be allocated to provide timely financial relief to the affected farmers.

According to official data, in April, unseasonal rain and storms damaged around 794 hectares of banana, orange, papaya, onion, and wheat crops across 1,174 villages, causing an estimated loss of Rs 2.83 crore. In May, preliminary estimates indicate that 13,639 hectares of crops — including moong, sesame, banana, orange, papaya, onion, jowar, and lemon — across 325 villages were affected. Assessment work for these damages is currently underway.

In addition to crop damage, lightning strikes in May claimed three lives. In April, partial damage was reported in 18 houses, while one house was completely destroyed. In May, 741 houses were damaged, with 14 being completely destroyed. Twelve cattle sheds and huts were also damaged. The storms in May also resulted in the death of 29 small and 12 large livestock.

The process to distribute ex gratia aid to the families of the deceased and livestock compensation to animal owners has begun. District authorities have intensified the assessment and relief efforts, acting on the directions of Minister Bawankule, to ensure that the affected farmers and citizens receive assistance as early as possible.

Profits over lives: Rooftop restaurants thrive illegally in Nagpur; safety ignored!

Nagpur: The city’s illegally operating rooftop restaurants are accidents waiting to happen — quite literally. In clear violation of fire safety norms, most of these establishments lack even the most basic emergency exit arrangements. Yet, shockingly, authorities have turned a blind eye, sources said.

According to official reports, 22 rooftop restaurants are currently operating without the necessary permissions, mainly in high-footfall areas like Ramdaspeth, Sadar, Amravati Road, Dharampeth, and Cotton Market.

Despite being flagged multiple times by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Fire and Emergency Services Department, there has been no concrete action. Instead, the response has been limited to token notices, while the risk to public safety continues to grow.

Rampant violations ignored by authorities

According to sources, Fire Department records reveal that none of these 22 rooftop restaurants has approved building plans or fire safety clearances. Worse, 15 of them do not have even the bare minimum fire-fighting equipment. Most have no provision for emergency exits — a blatant and dangerous violation of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act. In the event of a fire or other emergency, the lack of escape routes could lead to a catastrophic tragedy.

While notices have been issued to these violators, the Fire Department appears to have washed its hands of the matter by simply forwarding the issue to the state government and the City Planning Department — a move that smacks of bureaucratic lethargy and indifference.

Profits over safety

Over the last few years, rooftop restaurants have become increasingly popular among the youth, turning into hotspots for nightlife and dining. But behind the ambience and aesthetics lie deep-rooted safety lapses. Patrons are unaware that a single spark or short circuit could turn their evening out into a nightmare, with no way out.

Shockingly, of the 22 rooftop restaurants currently under scrutiny, only one has been certified by a competent authority. The rest continue to operate illegally, without structural approvals or licenses — let alone fire safety compliance.

Negligence could prove fatal

Despite full knowledge of these glaring irregularities, the Fire Department has largely remained a silent spectator. Issuing notices and filing reports seems to be the extent of their action — far from the urgent crackdown needed to prevent a potential tragedy.

Unless strict action is taken without further delay, Nagpur could soon find itself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons — with blood on the hands of those who allowed these illegal establishments to flourish unchecked.

Nagpur: The Reserve Bank of India has reported a massive rise in the number of counterfeit Rs 500 denomination notes. According to the Central Bank, the number of counterfeit Rs 500 denomination notes detected in the banking system surged by 37.3 per cent in the year 2024-25.

As per the RBI, 1.18 lakh of fake Rs 500 notes (new design) worth Rs 5.88 crore were detected in the banking system during 2024-25, as against 85,711 counterfeit notes valued at Rs 4.28 crore detected in 2023-24.

The RBI, in its annual report for 2024-25, also reported a 13.9 per cent rise in detection of the number of counterfeit Rs 200 notes in 2024-25. The total number of counterfeit Rs 200 denomination notes detected in 2024-25 valued at Rs 65.32 lakh, compared to 28,672 fake notes valued at Rs 57.34 lakh, it said.

During 2024-25, the counterfeit notes detected in the denominations of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100 saw a surge at 32.3 per cent, 14 per cent, 21.8 per cent and 23 per cent. The number of counterfeit Rs 2,000 notes saw the biggest decline, dropping by 86.52 per cent to 3,508 notes in 2024-25, compared to 26,035 pieces in 2023-24.

The total number of counterfeit notes detected in the banking system stood at 2.17 lakh in April 2024-March 2025, which is lower than 2.22 lakh in 2023-24.

A majority (95.3 per cent) of the total Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) were detected by banks, while RBI detected the rest (4.7 per cent), the annual report showed.

The RBI report also mentioned that the value and volume of banknotes in circulation increased by 6 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively, during 2024-25.

In 2024-25, the share of Rs 500 banknotes stood at 86 per cent, a marginal decline in value terms. At 40.9 per cent, Rs 500 denomination constituted the highest share of the total banknotes in circulation, followed by Rs 10 denomination banknotes at 16.4 per cent.

The lower denomination banknotes — Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50, together constituted 31.7 per cent of total banknotes in circulation by volume.

Digital currency, RBI’s new push for international payments

The Central Bank is exploring CBDC pilots for cross-border payments on both bilateral and multilateral bases, signalling a push towards using the digital rupee for international settlements.

“The value of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) or e-rupee in circulation jumped to Rs 1,016 crore at the end of March 2025 from Rs 234 crore in the year-ago period,” the Central Bank said in its annual report.

The CBDC was first introduced in November 2022 initially with a wholesale pilot, which was followed up with a retail one as well. Simplifying cross-border payments was one of the stated advantages of the CBDC, which had to be introduced in face of the challenge to the currency system from non-fiat virtual currencies such as Bitcoins.

“…the Reserve Bank is exploring commencement of CBDC pilots on cross-border payments both on a bilateral and multilateral basis to overcome key challenges related to turnaround time, efficiency and transparency,” it said.

“Bilateral cross-border CBDC pilots with select countries are being “actively explored”, and progress has been made in finalisation of the roadmap, technical aspects and use cases,” the report said.

Clean water supply in Nagpur boosted by ‘AMRUT’ pipeline network

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), under the AMRUT-1, AMRUT-1 (Supplementary), and AMRUT-2 schemes, has successfully laid a new network of water pipelines across various parts of the city. This initiative has significantly improved water quality and pressure, resolving longstanding issues of low pressure and contamination. As a result, Nagpurians are now receiving clean, pressurized, and consistent water supply.

The development has led to a sharp drop in daily water tanker trips—from 370 to near zero in newly connected areas—resulting in an annual savings of approximately Rs 5.5 crore for the civic body.

Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, the NMC is focused on enhancing public utilities and infrastructure. As part of the AMRUT initiative, an aging 53-km pipeline in the Indora-2 Command Area was replaced under AMRUT-1 (Supplementary).

Previously, localities such as Buddh Nagar, Ashinagar, Habib Nagar, Nai Basti, Teka Naka, Siddharth Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Balabhaupeth, and Taj Nagar faced frequent complaints of low pressure and contaminated water. Addressing these concerns, the NMC has already migrated 2,600 of the 3,300 connections in the area to the new pipeline network and has regularized 1,050 unauthorized connections.

Water supply through the new network has commenced in parts of Buddh Nagar, Ashinagar, Habib Nagar, Nai Basti, Devi Nagar, and Balabhaupeth, where water pressure has now increased by 5 to 8 meters, ensuring a cleaner and more reliable supply. This information was provided by Dr. Shweta Banerjee, Superintending Engineer, Public Health Engineering Department.

In the Binaki Existing Command Area, 23 km of old pipelines were replaced under AMRUT-1 (Supplementary). Areas like Panchsheel Nagar, Baba Buddha Nagar, Pachkuwa, Hanuman Society, Mahendranagar, Adarsh Nagar, and Sujata Nagar—previously receiving minimal and contaminated water—are now benefiting from clean and pressurized supply via the new network. Work is underway in remaining parts of this zone.

Additionally, 50 km of pipeline under AMRUT-1 and 20 km under AMRUT-2 were installed in the Nara NIT and Nari-2 Command Areas. Areas including Panjara, Rohini Society, Durgamata Nagar, Samata Nagar, Ganesh Nagar, and Ashoka Nagar—once dependent on 190–200 tanker trips daily—have now received over 2,000 new tap connections, eliminating the need for tankers altogether.

In Uppalwadi–Wanjra Command Area, 20 km and 30 km of pipelines have been laid under AMRUT-1 and AMRUT-2 respectively. Over 2,200 to 2,400 tap connections have been provided in Pahune Layout, Bhimwadi, Ma Bambleshwari Nagar, Rahmat Nagar, and Billal Nagar, thereby ending the daily reliance on 180–190 water tanker trips.

The AMRUT schemes have thus brought significant improvements to Nagpur’s water supply system. Challenges related to low water pressure, contamination, and tanker dependence are being effectively addressed. Most importantly, projects in the remaining areas are progressing steadily, promising city-wide coverage in the near future.

Stop using “100%” in food labelling, promotions, misleading for consumers: FSSAI

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strong advisory against the use of the term “100%” in food labelling and promotional materials, citing its potential to mislead consumers.

The apex food regulator has directed all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to refrain from using the term on food labels, packaging, and promotional content, due to its ambiguity and potential for misinterpretation under existing regulatory provisions.

In an advisory issued on Thursday, the FSSAI highlighted a noticeable rise in the use of “100%” on food product labels and advertising platforms. The authority emphasised that the term is not defined under current regulations and can create a misleading impression among consumers.

According to the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, the term “100%” is neither defined nor referenced under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, or any rules and regulations made thereunder.

Furthermore, Sub-regulation 10(7) of the aforementioned regulations explicitly prohibits any advertisement or claim that disparages other manufacturers or misleads consumers. As per Sub-regulation 4(1), all claims must be truthful, unambiguous, meaningful, not misleading, and should help consumers understand the information provided.

The FSSAI noted that the use of the term “100%” whether on its own or in combination with other descriptors is likely to falsely suggest absolute purity or superiority. “This could mislead consumers into believing that other comparable products available in the market are inferior or non-compliant with regulatory standards,” the statement said.

In light of these concerns, all FBOs have been advised to avoid the use of “100%” on food product labels, packaging, and any form of promotional content.

The FSSAI reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in food labelling to safeguard consumer interests and promote informed decision-making.

NMC gears up to combat dengue, malaria ahead of monsoon in Nagpur

Nagpur: With the onset of monsoon and ongoing construction activities across Nagpur, the risk of waterlogging and mosquito breeding has increased significantly, raising concerns over the potential spike in vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria. In response, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has swung into action, implementing pre-emptive measures to curb the spread of these illnesses.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari has instructed the Health Department to intensify and advance its annual monsoon preparedness drive this year. Traditionally, measures such as fogging and inspection drives begin after the detection of dengue or malaria cases. However, taking a more proactive stance, Dr. Chaudhari has emphasized early intervention to prevent outbreaks before they occur.

Breed seekers to visit homes

The Health Department has deployed a significantly expanded team of breed seekers, who will carry out door-to-door inspections across all city zones. These teams will search for stagnant water in households, particularly in coolers and water containers, and educate residents on preventive practices.

“Many people continue using water coolers despite the humidity, unaware that they are prime breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, which spread dengue,” said a senior NMC official. “Our breed seekers will not only identify potential breeding spots but also guide residents on eliminating them.”

In addition to residential areas, the civic body is targeting open plots and construction sites, where rainwater often accumulates. These areas are being treated with Mosquito Repellent Oil (MRO) to disrupt larval development. The teams are also working in nullahs and drains to prevent large-scale mosquito breeding.

City-wide fogging begins

To further strengthen its efforts, NMC has mobilized its fogging fleet. Each of the city’s 10 zones has been assigned a fogging vehicle, already operational and making rounds through main roads and neighbourhoods. For areas inaccessible to vehicles, such as narrow lanes and congested localities, hand-fogging will be carried out by field workers.

“Every zone is equipped and ready. Our aim is to reduce the mosquito population before it multiplies, especially in vulnerable areas,” the official added.

Dengue has posed a persistent challenge to the civic administration in recent years, often flaring up during monsoon despite parallel health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and swine flu outbreaks. With this year’s early push, NMC hopes to bring those numbers down and keep the city healthier this rainy season.

Nagpur Central Jail’s new double gallows nearing completion

Nagpur: The Nagpur Central Jail is set to join the select list of prisons in India capable of executing two death row convicts simultaneously, as construction of a state-of-the-art double gallows nears completion. This new facility replaces the outdated gallows and is designed with advanced mechanisms for carrying out executions.

The new gallows platform, measuring 2.5 by 1.2 meters, is almost ready, with only final plaster work remaining. Officials expect the execution yard to be fully operational within two months. Once functional, Nagpur will become one of the few locations in the country equipped with infrastructure to execute two convicts at once.

The last execution at Nagpur Central Jail took place in 2015, when Yakub Memon — convicted in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts — was hanged. The procedural and technical challenges faced during that execution prompted authorities to plan a modernized facility.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had sanctioned the project in February 2020, assigning the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out the construction. A formal work order was issued in December 2022.

Technical guidance for the gallows system is being provided by the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. According to sources, a team of experts has already inspected the site and the complete system is expected to be ready within 15 days.

Globally, only 55 countries, including India, continue to practice capital punishment. In contrast, 144 countries have abolished it either in law or in practice. Among India’s neighbouring countries, only Nepal has officially abolished the death penalty.

India sentences an average of 131 convicts to death each year. In 2024, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 130 death penalty verdicts, followed by Gujarat (71), Maharashtra (42), and West Bengal (37). Currently, 544 convicts across India are on death row. However, the Supreme Court has not confirmed any execution sentence over the past two years.

Nagpur: In a startling incident during heightened tensions with Pakistan, Sunita Jamgade, a resident of Nagpur, managed to cross the Line of Control (LoC) into Pakistani territory within just two hours, navigating through snow-covered mountains, gorges, and rivers. However, she was apprehended by Pakistani Rangers shortly after entering the border.

The incident occurred on May 14, when Pakistani security forces detained Sunita as she crossed the LOC. Sunita claimed she was on her way to meet Zulfiqar, a man from Gilgit with whom she was allegedly in contact through a stone business venture. According to her statement, she found her way using Google Maps, left her son near Kargil, and proceeded toward the LoC on her own. Despite sustaining injuries after slipping along the treacherous path, she continued her journey and eventually crossed into Pakistan.

Initially, Pakistani Rangers took the matter lightly, but once it reached higher authorities, the military became involved. Sunita was blindfolded and taken to an undisclosed location, where she was interrogated for several days.

So far, Indian intelligence agencies have not found any evidence that she shared sensitive information. However, Nagpur Police remain suspicious of her sudden and unusual journey to Pakistan.

An investigation into her bank account revealed that she received online payments from some Indian sources. The police are now probing whether these transactions had any hidden motives. It has also come to light that Sunita obtained documents related to mental health treatment on May 2 in Nagpur and departed for Amritsar on May 4. The swift sequence of events has further deepened the mystery surrounding her actions.

Authorities are now questioning:

• Was Sunita’s visit to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) truly for business?

• Or is there a deeper network or racket behind this operation?

Intelligence agencies and police are actively investigating all angles to uncover the real motive behind this unauthorized border crossing.
