Nagpur: All 11 individuals accused in the pickpocketing spree during a welcome rally for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have been released on bail after courts ruled the investigations inconclusive. The accused, reportedly part of a gang from Ahilyanagar, were arrested following complaints of thefts including wallets, mobile phones, and gold chains during the high-profile event.

The accused were detained based on investigations conducted by Rana Pratap Nagar, Sonegaon, and Bajaj Nagar police stations. Despite extensive efforts, including the analysis of CCTV footage, no stolen valuables were recovered, leading the courts to deem the investigation a “dead-end.”

Advocate Munish R. Perke, representing the accused, stated, “The prosecution failed to present conclusive evidence linking my clients to the alleged crimes. The lack of recovery further weakens the case against them.”

The incident, which had sparked public outrage, saw over 30 victims filing complaints about thefts during the rally. While the police had formed multiple teams and arrested the suspects, the lack of substantial evidence has left the case unresolved.

The release of the accused raises questions about the efficacy of the investigation and highlights the need for improved measures to handle such cases in the future.

Blow to victims: HC shuts door on SFIO probe into multi-crore Wasankar scam

Nagpur: In a blow to thousands of investors, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has disposed of a petition asking for an investigation by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) into Prashant Waskankar and his company, Wasankar Wealth Management Limited (WWML), which is accused of huge financial fraud and duping of investors in Nagpur and other parts of the state to the tune of crores of rupees.

The case was heard by Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Vrushali Joshi. The High Court observed that the petitioners’ demands for forensic auditing and expert assistance in the case had already been fulfilled by the State Government.

The scam, uncovered in 2014, involved director Prashant Wasankar, his family members, and associates, who are accused of allegedly deceiving investors under the pretence of doubling their money. Sleuths from the Economic Offences Wing (EoW) had apprehended most of the accused for duping thousands of depositors after promising extraordinary returns ranging from 24%-75%. Wasankar remained an undertrial prisoner for years before securing bail.

The fraud trial is currently ongoing in a lower court, where 60 witnesses have already been examined. The High Court asked if a forensic auditor had been appointed to look into the case. The petitioner’s lawyers confirmed that the State Government had already appointed a forensic auditor, and the report was submitted in the MPDA court on March 23, 2023. Based on this, the court decided there was no need for an investigation by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office, and the petition filed by Ashok Lanjewar was dismissed.

In 2017, a group of affected investors, led by petitioner Ashok Lanjewar, approached the High Court, contending that the EOW lacked the expertise to investigate such a large-scale corporate fraud. The petition demanded that the probe be transferred to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), a Central Government agency with proficiency in banking, corporate, forensic accounting, and legal matters. Additionally, the petition sought the appointment of a forensic auditor to scrutinise the financial irregularities.

During Thursday’s hearing, the government informed the court via affidavit that a forensic auditor had already been appointed to assist with the case. The auditor’s report has been submitted to the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) court, where the trial is ongoing. The state also confirmed substantial progress in the case, with 70 witnesses examined thus far.

Acknowledging that the petitioners’ demands had been addressed, the High Court disposed of the petition. “The forensic auditor’s appointment and report satisfy the petitioners’ requests,” the court stated in its order.

At the time of filing the petition, the court had directed the petitioners to deposit 5 lakh as demonstration of their genuine intentions. Following the petition’s dismissal, the court ordered the amount be refunded to the petitioners.

The Wasankar scam surfaced in 2014 when thousands of investors reported losing their life savings to the fraudulent schemes promoted by the family. All accused in the scam, including Wasankar’s wife Bhagyashree, brother Vinay, his wife Mithila, Sarla Wasankar, Kumud Chaudhary and their employees — Chandrakant Rai, Deodutt Kardale, Khapre and others were booked under sections 420, 406, 506, 120 (B) of IPC and section 3 of the MPID Act by the Ambazari Police.

According to media reports, the investigation officer of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had stated before the court that the scam is worth Rs 2,000 crore. This makes it among the biggest Ponzi schemes of the country.

The police officer had said over Rs 400 crore were routed through M/s Inter-Connect Stock Exchange (ISE). This was the main broker through which Wasankar dealt in the stock market as a sub-broker. Since stock market investments accounted for 20% of the amount accepted from investors, the total figure can be pegged at Rs 2,000 crore. The remaining 80% amount was collected in cash from investors, the cops said.

“I stand for change, not revenge,” says CM Fadnavis on positive politics

Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized his commitment to transformational politics over vendettas during an engaging dialogue with noted thinker and orator Vivek Ghalsasi at Sitaram Bhavan in Nagpur on Friday evening.

Speaking at the ‘Jivhala Puraskar-2025’ ceremony, held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Vilas Fadnavis, the Chief Minister remarked, “I believe in politics of change, and not of revenge.” The event, organized by the Jivhala Foundation, brought together dignitaries and attendees to celebrate the legacy of Vilas Fadnavis while highlighting the importance of progressive governance.

Shridhar Gadge,Vidarbha Prant Sahsanghchalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, presided over the function. Neelimatai Bawane, Chairperson of Dharampeth Mahila Co-operative Society, was a guest of honour on this occasion. This year, the ‘Jivhala Award-2025’ was conferred upon Samvedana Parivar, Nagpur and Gayatri Balikashram, Akola. The award comprises Rs 1 lakh cash each. Kanchan and Jyoti Phadke of Samvedana Parivar, and Ganesh Kalkar of Gayatri Balikashram received the award at the hands of Devendra Fadnavis.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister and Ghalsasi fondly remembered the contributions of late Vilas Fadnavis to the societal welfare. Ghalsasi interacted with Fadnavis on stage. During the interaction, Ghalsasi asked the Chief Minister about growing up years, family, maintaining sensitivity amid political climate, inspiration, and the journey so far. Fadnavis also replied in a frank manner.

Ghalsasi recalled how a five-year-old Devendra Fadnavis had tears in his eyes when he cuddled cow and calf at Mul town in Chandrapur district. “He has always been a sensitive person,” Ghalsasi added. Fadnavis said,“I lookup to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is my inspiration. Many people hurled slurs at him right from the year 2002, but he kept quiet and let his work speak for him. Patience and the power to digest everything are virtues in politics.”

To another question,he quipped, “I only get angry when I am hungry,” evoking a burst of laughter in the hall. Asked about his family, and particularly his daughter, Fadnavis replied that his family also had learned to be patient. Sometimes, he added, he was surprised at the level of matured thinking that his daughter Divija displayed. He said that he would leave the choice of joining politics to Divija, but quickly added, “I believe that I am the last person in politics from Fadnavis family.”

Fadnavis shared his memories of growing up in Nagpur. To a question about his political journey, Fadnavis replied, “Manners make the man. I never had the intention of joining politics. I always wanted to serve the society as much as I could. But, one day, I was asked to join BJP and continue working for the society in another capacity. I immediately went to Vilasji (Fadnavis) to talk about this. He asked me to have some food and then calmly explained that a disciplined RSS swayamsevak must do what he is told to do. That was it…”

However, his political career, especially over the past five years, has not been easy. He had to face lot of insulting remarks from some political figures. When Ghalsasi raised this during the conversation, the Chief Minister said in a composed manner, “History remembers what you did, and not the people who kept on hurling insults while you were busy with work.” This evoked a loud applause from the audience.

Also, he said that he became the Chief Minister to change the political atmosphere in Maharashtra positively and create confidence among the people.

Political rapid-fire

Of course, the conversation could not be complete without political questions. In a rapid-fire round of questions, Fadnavis was asked to choose between two leaders whose names were taken.

Who does he like the most: Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah?

Without any hesitation came the reply from Devendra Fadnavis, “Modiji is a disciplined and determined person. He walks the path he has chosen irrespective of obstacles or criticism. It is very difficult to be like him. As far as Amitbhai (Shah) is concerned, he listens to you carefully and does not hesitate in taking a decision if it has political merit.”

Raj Thackeray or Uddhav Thackeray

On the choice between MNS leader Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis said, “Nothing is permanent in politics. Previously, Uddhav was a friend. Then, Raj Thackeray became a friend. Today, Raj Thackeray is still a friend and Uddhav Thackeray is not a foe.”

Ajit Pawar or Eknath Shinde?

With a smile, Fadnavis answered, “I enjoy friendship with both. Eknath Shinde is an old friend. Ajit Pawar has political maturity and we share a different bond.”

Nagpur: A Meghe Group Company, CS Tech AI, has secured the Rs 381 crore contract for conducting the initial survey and preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Maharashtra Government’s ambitious Nalganga-Wainganga river linking project.

The 485 km long network will link the Wainganga River in Bhandara to the Nalganga River in Buldhana, which flows in the western part of the Vidarbha region. This marks the first step for the Rs 84,000 crore river linking project cleared by the State Govt in its previous tenure. The contract also led to CS Tech’s shares touching the upper circuit after the company announced that it secured the contract.

CS Tech, formerly known as Ceinsys Tech, has Sagar Meghe as the Non-Executive Director and the Chairman. The company took part in the bids invited by the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) along with around four other contenders. CS Tech has also partnered with Nippon Koei India Private Limited. The latter has expertise in providing technical solutions for building irrigation structures in difficult terrain.

The bidding happened earlier; however, the VIDC was waiting for the new Water Resources Minister to be appointed after elections for finalising the contract, said sources. The Meghe Group, to which the company belongs, was formed in 1982 by Sagar’s father, Datta Meghe, a politician and founder of a number of educational institutes.

The project was cleared by the State Cabinet in August this year. The project, which is also one of its kind in the state, aims to irrigate 3.75 hectares of farmland through a complex network of canals, barrages, and lift irrigation systems. This is also expected to do away with the drinking water problems of drought-prone Buldhana district.

Nagpur based CS Tech AI, it has tied-up with a Japanese agency, has bagged Rs 381.18 crore contract to carry out the detailed study that would form the roadmap for mega construction of tunnels, dams and barrages in the project. The project aims to provide water for irrigating 3.7 lakh acre of farm land in parched districts of Vidarbha, about six in all, for which 40 existing and some proposed barrages are going to be constructed.

The note prepared by Irrigation Department on Wainganga-Nalganga said the project stands to benefit districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Amravati, Akola, Buldhana and Washim. Wainganga is tributary of Godavari while Nalganga is tributary of Purna river which lies on Tapi river basin.

Wainganga river has the biggest dam of Vidarbha, Gosikhurd, it is the first to get national project status in the country, and from there the extra water is proposed to be diverted to a parched region in Western part of State.

CM Fadnavis Inaugurates Solar Industries’ Drone-making Facility in Nagpur

Nagpur : In a big boost to Indigenous manufacturing of drones, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), loitering munitions, and counter-drone systems, a state-of-the-art composite manufacturing facility was inaugurated at Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), Solar Industries Nagpur, by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday.

In the emerging technology scenario, Drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) are going to play a vital role in both civil as well as military applications. Many Indian industries and start-ups have entered drone-related technologies and systems mostly focussed on surveillance and logistics applications.

The use of drones and UAVs for combat applications needs special expertise and facilities which most industries in our country do not have. Solar Industries have taken the initiative towards the weaponization of drones, developing variants of Loiter Munitions (LM), Counter Drone Systems, Drone-based Mine Detection and Disposal Systems etc. Taking these developments further, recently Solar has taken the initiative to develop a MALE class of UAVs with surveillance and attack capabilities.

In a major breakthrough in bringing ‘Atma-nirbharta’ in ammunition and defence systems, the first indigenous Loiter Munition, ‘Nagastra – 1’, developed by Solar Industries, Nagpur, has been inducted in the Infantry of the Indian Army. Against the contract from the Indian Army, Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Group, has manufactured and supplied 480 Loiter Munitions under Emergency Purchase.

Nagastra -1, in a “kamikaze mode”, can neutralize any hostile threat with a GPS-enabled precision strike with an accuracy of 2m. In case of target is not detected or if the mission is aborted, the loiter munition can be called back and make a soft landing with a parachute recovery mechanism enabling it to be reused multiple times. Abort, recover and reuse features of this Loiter Munition make this system superior to similar classes of systems developed by advanced countries. Successful development and delivery of Nagastra-1, Loiter Munition, is the first success and higher variants of Nagastra-2 and Nagastra-3, with far superior performance parameters and warhead carrying capabilities, are in the advanced stage of development as Make-2 projects.

Drone technology has proved to be a Force Multiplier in military operations as evidenced by its application in various recent conflicts across the World especially Armenia – Azerbaijan, Syria, Syria, Strike on Oilfields in Saudi Arabia, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine and Isreal Gaza conflict. Even in our context, the recent incidents along the borders have seen a noticeable increase in drone-related incidents along the Northern Borders in the recent past.

Emergency era defined my political path, says Gadkari

Nagpur: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, reflected on the transformative impact of the Emergency period on his political journey during a special screening of the film Emergency in Nagpur. “The fight against Emergency shaped my political identity,” Gadkari shared, recalling his personal experiences during that tumultuous era.

“If it was not for the horrors of Emergency and my imprisonment, I would not have been in politics,” said Gadkari, adding it wasn’t just political leaders, ordinary citizens were part of the resistance against the draconian law.

The movie, directed and co-produced by Padma Shri Kangana Ranaut, portrays the life and decisions of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Ranaut also plays the lead role in the film. Veteran actor and Padma Bhushan awardee Anupam Kher, who portrays Jaiprakash Narayan in the movie, joined Gadkari and Ranaut at the premiere, marking the first-ever screening of Emergency in India.

A select audience of Nagpur’s elite, including business leaders, journalists, and individuals who endured imprisonment during the Emergency, attended the event.

A journey through history

Ranaut expressed gratitude to Gadkari for supporting the film and acknowledged the challenges she faced during production. “The Censor Board demanded extensive documentation to verify the authenticity of various scenes. Despite the hurdles, I aimed to create an honest portrayal of the Emergency and Indira Gandhi’s decisions,” she said, adding, “I hope Nagpurians will spread the word about this labour of love.”

Anupam Kher applauded the Nagpur audience and emphasized the significance of premiering the film in the city. “From Nagpur, I believe the conversation about this movie will resonate across the country,” he said.

Memories of the Emergency

Gadkari narrated poignant anecdotes from the Emergency era, highlighting its oppressive nature. He recalled a personal experience when he struggled to secure parole for his maternal uncle, who was imprisoned during the Emergency. “My grandfather had passed away, and I ran from pillar to post to ensure my uncle could attend the funeral. I spent the night under a tree outside the jail, waiting for him to be released the next morning. Such was the grim reality of those days,” he recounted.

He also reminisced about facing a lathi-charge with his friend Munna Mahajan and emphasized that the film is not just a cinematic work but a reminder of lived experiences. “The younger generation must understand this dark chapter of Indian history. Through this film, they will learn about the struggles of that time,” Gadkari said.

A celebration of excellence

Gadkari praised Ranaut for her dedication to authenticity and excellence in bringing the Emergency era to life. On the occasion, Ranaut felicitated Gadkari, while he, in turn, honoured both Ranaut and Kher for their contributions to the film.

The premiere of Emergency in Nagpur served not only as an artistic milestone but also as a powerful reminder of resilience and the enduring lessons of history.

Novel trick to pilfer gas from LPG cylinders: Two arrested in Gondia

Gondia: A shocking revelation has come to light regarding theft of 2 to 2.5 kilograms of gas from domestic LPG cylinders delivered to homes. While this malpractice has been ongoing for some time, it often goes unnoticed as most customers don’t weigh their cylinders upon delivery. This loophole has been exploited by distributors, suppliers, and delivery personnel. On Friday, January 10, around 3 pm, an illegal operation involving gas theft was busted in the Ramnagar area of Gonditola in Gondia.

Caught red-handed transferring gas from full cylinders to empty ones

Acting on a tip-off, Hemraj Vasant Sahare (39), a junior clerk from the Tehsil office and an inspector with temporary charge of supply monitoring, conducted a raid in Gonditola area of Gondia. During the operation, two accused, Suresh Rajaram Parteti (32, resident of Gonditola) and Suresh Dulichand Damaha (32, resident of Schooltoli Hirva), were caught red-handed. The duo was found tampering with the iron seal of filled Indane cylinders and, using an electric motor, transferring gas into empty cylinders through a regulator pipe.

Equipment and goods seized

The police confiscated several items from the scene, including:

• One electric motor with wiring

• Two gas pipes with regulators

• A weighing scale

• Four domestic Indane LPG cylinders

• Three empty commercial blue cylinders

• One filled commercial blue cylinder

The total value of the seized goods is estimated at ₹28,700.

Following a complaint by Inspector Hemraj Sahare, a case has been registered at Ramnagar Police Station under Sections 3 and 7 of the Essential Commodities Act (ECA).

The investigation is currently being led by Assistant Police Inspector Waghmode.

Nagpur: Around 5:00 pm on Saturday, Chandan Dahake and his friends noticed an animal trapped in a septic tank in a layout in the Hingna area of Nagpur. Concerned for its safety, they contacted Sarpamitra Harshal Shende, who immediately arrived at the scene. The animal was found in a critical state, nearing death.

Harshal Shende, along with his assistants Lucky Raut and Mangesh Dhulse, initiated the rescue operation. The animal, known as a Civet Cat in English and Masanya Ud or Ud Majar in Marathi, is often associated with superstitions, including the myth that it feeds on corpses in cremation grounds. However, these beliefs are baseless.

The civet cat was stuck in a septic tank over 15 feet deep, making it impossible for the animal to escape on its own. It remains unclear how long the animal had been trapped, but its condition indicated severe dehydration.

Thanks to the timely intervention of the rescuers, the civet cat’s life was saved. After receiving necessary care, it was released back into the same area. The efforts of those who came forward to save the animal are commendable.
