Fadnavis’s return as CM bolsters Nagpur’s stalled civic projects

Nagpur: The civic infrastructure development in Nagpur has seen a dramatic resurgence with the return of Devendra Fadnavis as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister. The city, which had endured stalled projects under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, is now witnessing an accelerated pace of work, fuelled by contractors’ renewed confidence in timely state funding.

Projects sanctioned by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), ranging from cement roads to stormwater drains and garden development, are now progressing at full speed. The transformation marks a stark departure from the previous administration’s tenure when funds worth ₹169.31 crore allocated by Fadnavis were put on hold by the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government.

Before the 2019 elections, Fadnavis had approved funds for multiple civic initiatives in his hometown. However, the subsequent MVA administration froze these funds, leaving 54 projects in limbo. Contractors, wary of payment delays, slowed their efforts, and NMC had to include disclaimers in tenders, stating payments would depend on state disbursements—a clause that further deepened uncertainties.

The Mahayuti Government’s return brought a much-needed boost to Nagpur’s civic landscape. A senior NMC Public Works Department official confirmed the change in momentum: “With 20% of the funds released so far, contractors are now working with renewed vigour.”

As a result, ₹470 crore worth of projects are back on track.

• South Nagpur: Civic projects worth ₹80 crore are underway, with 90% of tenders allotted, ensuring swift execution.

• East Nagpur: Leading the charge, works valued at ₹160 crore have all been tendered and are progressing smoothly.

• Southwest Nagpur: Infrastructure projects worth ₹150 crore are advancing rapidly, with 85% of tenders finalized.

• Central Nagpur: Projects worth ₹30 crore are nearing completion, reflecting efficiency in addressing pending works.

• Hudkeshwar-Narsala: Despite an allocation of ₹35 crore, only 5% of the projects have begun, highlighting the need for faster implementation.

• West Nagpur: Limited progress is evident, with just ₹15 crore in work orders issued so far.

During the recent winter session in Nagpur, NMC made a supplementary demand for the release of additional funds to cover sanctioned works. The state government’s assurance has further bolstered contractor confidence, ensuring the pace of development remains unhindered.

From road improvements to stormwater drainage systems, the impact of this renewed momentum is visible across the city. As civic works regain their pace, Nagpur stands on the brink of a significant transformation, with Fadnavis’s leadership providing a solid foundation for sustainable urban development.

6 devotees killed, dozens hurt in stampede at Tirupati temple

At least six devotees died and dozens were injured in a stampede here on Wednesday night as hundreds of them jostled for tickets for Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam at Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple on Tirumala Hills, said an official.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams chairman BR Naidu said one body has been identified.

“A DSP opened the gates…and immediately everybody pushing ahead led to this stampede and reports are emerging that six persons died,” Naidu told a vernacular news channel.

Hundreds of devotees turned up from across the country for the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam commencing from January 10.

“A few devotees dying in a stampede near Vishnu Nivasam in Tirupati while trying for Vaikuna Dwara Darsanam has grieved me intensely,” said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in a post on ‘X’.

According to the TTD Chairman, Naidu conducted a teleconference and expressed dissatisfaction over the temple employees and said such an incident was unfortunate.

There is some suspicion that it happened due to (the temple) administration, he said and added that the CM is coming to Tirupati on Thursday to comfort the injured persons.

“The CM directed us that these kinds of incidents should not recur”, he said.

“Taking this as a lesson, it is incumbent upon all of us to avert these kinds of incidents in the future,” said Naidu, adding the CM will announce ex–gratia on Thursday.

Terming the stampede as unfortunate, TTD board member Bhanu Prakash sought the forgiveness of Srivari (Lord Venkateswara Swamy) devotees over the incident.

There was some lacuna and stringent action will be taken but lost lives cannot be brought back, he said.

Videos of police personnel administering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on a couple of woman devotees and injured persons being shifted in ambulances went viral.

‘Baldness virus’: Mysterious mass hair loss in 3 villages of Buldhana sparks panic

Nagpur/Buldhana: Several residents of three villages in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district have turned bald within a week after mass hair loss over the past few days. Health officials suspect that water pollution due to fertilisers was behind the mass hair loss. The officials collected samples of water in the area and villagers’ hair and skin samples for testing.

The unusual disease has caused panic across 15 villages in the Shegaon tehsil of Buldhana district. The illness begins with intense itching on the scalp, followed by complete hair loss within three days. So far, over 150 people, including men, women, and children have been affected, while symptoms have been reported in 400 others.

The affected villages include Hingna, Bondgaon, Bhota and Pahur Purna. The disease has left the residents terrified, with locals dubbing it the ‘Baldness Virus’.

On camera, several people show how a gentle tug was uprooting hair on their heads. Others pointed to the bald spots that developed within a week. The panic across the villages has prompted a visit by top district health officials.

According to the health department team that visited the villages, about 150 people have been identified as suffering from this problem and doctors fear this number could rise. Samples of skin and hair have been collected and doctors believe this swift hair fall could be caused by polluted water as well as a health issue. As the doctors wait for test results to identify the cause of the mass hair fall, they have asked the villages to take good care of their health.

Shegaon Health Officer Dr Deepali Rahekar was part of the health team that visited the village. “It could be due to polluted water. We have collected samples and will test them to reach a conclusion.”

Medical experts believe this condition, referred to as ‘acute hair loss’ or ‘alopecia’ may be triggered by use of contaminated water, fungal infections on the scalp, malnutrition or vitamin deficiencies, adverse effects of certain chemicals or cosmetics.

The Purna river basin, where most of the affected villages are located, is known for its saline soil and poor water quality. Government reports have previously highlighted the excessive fluoride content in the region’s groundwater, which could be a contributing factor.

So far, health officials have only conducted surveys, but the exact cause of the outbreak remains unidentified. A team of dermatologists and senior doctors is scheduled to visit the affected villages on Thursday for an in-depth investigation.

Residents, unable to find answers or solutions, have begun avoiding the river for bathing and are demanding immediate action from authorities.

Suicide pact: Nagpur couple’s chilling six-month preparation for drastic step revealed

Nagpur: In a tragic revelation, police investigations into the suicide pact of Jeril (56) and Anee Moncriff (45) in Martin Nagar of Nagpur have unveiled a meticulously planned act spanning six months. The couple’s farewell message and actions in the months leading to their death paint a haunting picture of their intent.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone V, Niketan Kadam, confirmed that the couple had been contemplating their demise for half a year. During this period, they hosted a grand wedding anniversary party, which investigators now believe was their way of bidding farewell to friends and family.

Subtle signs of a tragic plan

“They told relatives they would soon be leaving their house to serve society. At the time, no one suspected these statements might have a deeper meaning,” DCP Kadam shared. Friends and family, now reflecting on their remarks, believe the party was a disguised farewell.

A relative, overcome with emotion during questioning, admitted, “The anniversary celebration now feels like their final goodbye. We didn’t realize it at the time.”

Despite their tragic end, the Moncriffs were not facing financial difficulties. They had substantial savings and lived a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle. “They relied on the interest from their savings and were not struggling in any way,” DCP Kadam added.

Health challenges and emotional struggles

Health issues may have contributed to their despair. Anee had undergone major surgery to remove a large tumour, leaving her in chronic pain. Jeril, too, battled a stomach ulcer. While police are still piecing together the puzzle, DCP Kadam hinted at multiple underlying reasons, including their health struggles and the emotional toll of childlessness.

Final words and farewell

In a video call before their suicide, the couple expressed that they had lived fulfilling lives and were ready to leave the world. Their message underscores a sense of closure that has left their loved ones reeling.

This deeply unsettling case has raised questions about the hidden struggles people face and the importance of reaching out for help during times of distress. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Moncriffs’ decision.

It may be mentioned that Anee and Jeril were found dead in their home on Tuesday morning. Before ending their lives, the couple recorded a video on their mobile phone and expressed their intent to take their own lives. This video was shared on their social media status and sent to some relatives. Upon discovering the video on Tuesday morning, their concerned relatives rushed to the couple’s residence and made the grim discovery. They celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary for about two days. All relatives and acquaintances were invited. There was also a celebration on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Rs 12 cr Tadoba safari booking scam: ED raids Thakur brothers in Chandrapur

Nagpur: In a major operation against one of the region’s biggest wildlife tourism scams, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted pre-dawn raids on Wednesday at multiple properties linked to Rohit and Abhishek Thakur, directors of Wild Connectivity Solutions (WCS) in Chandrapur. The brothers are under investigation for allegedly embezzling Rs 12.2 crore from safari booking funds of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR).

The ED’s 25-member team from Nagpur targeted the Thakur brothers’ luxurious Sarkar Nagar bungalow, along with a petrol pump, a restaurant, a bakery, and other establishments. Key documents were seized, intensifying the probe into the alleged misappropriation of public funds.

The scam unveiled

The fraud traces back to a 2021 service-level agreement between WCS and the TATR Conservation Foundation for managing online safari bookings. Under the agreement, WCS was supposed to transfer Rs 22.8 crore to TATR by 2023. However, an audit revealed that only Rs 10.65 crore was remitted, leaving a deficit of Rs 12.15 crore. This discrepancy led to the forest department filing a complaint, terming it a blatant misuse of public money.

In August 2023, the Thakur brothers were booked at Ramnagar police station in Chandrapur after their anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a Chandrapur court. They were subsequently arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Nagpur. However, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court later granted them conditional bail, requiring a deposit of Rs 3 crore toward the outstanding dues. The brothers managed to pay Rs 2.41 crore and sought an extension until October 12, 2024, for the remaining amount.

Enforcement Directorate steps in

The forest department escalated the matter to the ED after filing complaints and gathering evidence. The ED began its investigation by collecting documents from TATR and EOW officials in Chandrapur. The raids are seen as a significant step toward holding the accused accountable.

Following the audit, TATR authorities terminated their agreement with WCS and launched their own website to manage safari bookings. This move aims to restore transparency and prevent future financial irregularities.

The fallout

The crackdown on WCS highlights the urgent need for stricter monitoring and accountability in managing wildlife tourism funds. The ED’s investigation is expected to uncover more details about how the Thakur brothers allegedly misappropriated the funds, impacting one of India’s most renowned tiger reserves.

This unfolding case serves as a stark reminder of the need to protect public funds and ensure the sustainability of wildlife conservation efforts.

Bloody roads: Year 2024, 327 accidents, 345 deaths: A grim reality in Nagpur

Nagpur: The Second Capital of Maharashtra is witnessing an alarming rise in road accidents, making its streets increasingly perilous. In 2024, a staggering 345 lives (292 males and 53 females) were lost in 327 fatal road accidents in Nagpur, marking the highest toll in five years. This translates to an average of over three accidents per day, with almost one fatality per day, according to statistics.

Fatal road accidents have been steadily climbing in Nagpur. Here’s a breakdown:

• 2019: 233 accidents, 250 deaths

• 2020: 195 accidents, 213 deaths (COVID-19 lockdown year)

• 2021: 255 accidents, 268 deaths

• 2022: 294 accidents, 310 deaths

• 2023: 294 accidents, 308 deaths

• 2024: 327 accidents, 345 deaths

This represents an 11% rise in fatalities compared to 2023 and a 20% increase since 2022.

Two-Wheelers: The most vulnerable

Two-wheelers continue to bear the brunt, with motorcycles and scooters involved in 319 incidents in 2024. Police officials attribute this to the lack of safety features such as seat belts and airbags. By contrast:

• Cars: 509 accidents

• Trucks: 192 accidents

• Buses: 125 accidents

Highways and small roads: Both deadly

While highways in the Nagpur Police Commissionerate area accounted for 107 deaths, smaller roads saw 196 fatalities and a total of 920 accidents. High-speed traffic on highways and crowded conditions on smaller roads contribute to these tragedies.

Peak accident hours: 4 pm to 8 pm

The most dangerous time on Nagpur roads is during the evening rush hour, from 4 PM to 8 PM, when traffic congestion is at its peak. Night driving, particularly from 8 PM to midnight, also sees a rise in accidents, as per police data.

The role of over-speeding and dangerous driving

Over-speeding was responsible for 97 fatalities in 2024, while dangerous driving claimed 109 lives. These behaviours also caused:

• 99 serious injuries

• 122 minor injuries

• 205 additional serious injuries from dangerous driving, such as sudden lane changes and aggressive behaviour.

Drunk driving: A persistent menace

Despite numerous awareness campaigns, driving under the influence remains a significant issue. In 2024, it caused six fatalities and 29 serious injuries.

Nagpur’s rising road accidents and fatalities underscore the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, improved infrastructure, and sustained public awareness campaigns. The grim statistics serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to make the city’s roads safer for everyone.

To promote road safety among masses and to make citizens aware about traffic signs, Janakrosh, a local NGO working in the field of road safety, released a calendar for the year 2025, on the occasion of the new year.

The calendar has details about various road signs which are essential to be known by every road user, including pedestrians and drivers. Normally due to the absence of traffic signs on roads and lack of proper traffic education, people are unaware about the sign boards erected by local bodies. Due to lack of awareness, many road accidents take place on Indian roads. Keeping this in mind, Janakrosh
released the calendar to educate people about this important subject, which can save lives.

The NGO is actively involved in the education field, where in they regularly conduct workshops in Schools & colleges, emphasising on following traffic rules, use of zebra crossings, importance of Stop-Line, wearing helmet, using seatbelt, limited honking, and particularly, ‘No Mobile While Mobile’. A quiz program called Kaun Banega Roadpati is also conducted by the volunteers, in which all students participate enthusiastically.

India has a dubious record of over 1,50,000 deaths of people every year, in road accidents. This NGO was formed in the year 2012, with the sole aim of creating awareness about safe driving and traffic education to general public. Having an enthusiastic participation of over 3000 volunteers across the country, they undertake various initiatives to save valuable lives.

As a regularly weekly activity, they conduct traffic education at major road intersections, wherein their volunteers monitor the traffic, in collaboration with the police officials. They also have student interactions and training, through Interactive sessions at various schools and colleges to create awareness about road safety.

This Nagpur-based NGO has now expanded to over 25 cities in eleven States, and aims to reach every nook and corner of the country to ensure safe roads for all. They earnestly appeal to all interested citizens to join hands for the noble cause for reduction of accidents on roads.

Nagpur: Malvika Bansod of Nagpur withstood the vociferous home crowd support to take sweet revenge for her 2022 quarter final defeat against local favourite Goh Jin Wei and advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open BWF Super 1000 badminton tournament being held in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

The star Nagpur shuttler Malvika is the lone Indian left in the women’s singles competition after Aakarshi Kashyap and Anupama Upadhyaya lost their opening round contests in contrasting fashion.

Malvika continued her giant-killing run of last year and kicked off her campaign in 2025 with yet another upset in the opening round of an international BWF World Tour event. In the opening round of the world’s top 32 shuttlers, Malvika defeated former world junior champion and local favourite Goh Jin Wei in straight games 21-15, 21-16. Malvika won the hard-fought contest in 45 minutes, disappointing the home supporters as Wei was the lone Malaysian shuttler in fray in the women’s singles category.

In the second round, Malvika will face third seed and world No. 8 Han Yue of China on Thursday.

Gadkari unveils cashless treatment initiative for road accident victims

Nagpur: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled a nationwide cashless treatment initiative aimed at providing essential aid to victims of road accidents.

Speaking at a meeting with state and union territory transport ministers at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, Gadkari also revealed an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for families of victims who lose their lives in hit-and-run cases.

This scheme builds on a pilot program launched on March 14, 2024, by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Chandigarh, which has since been expanded to other states.

The pilot program sought to establish a framework for delivering swift medical assistance to vehicle accident victims, particularly during the crucial “golden hour” following an incident. With the scheme now extended to all road accident victims across the country, the government is expected to introduce an updated arrangement by March 2025 to enhance emergency medical response and aid those recovering from accidents.

Key highlights of the initiative:

The Union Minister Gadkari stated that the government would bear the cost of treatment if the police are informed about the accident within 24 hours. He also underlined that the government’s top priority is road safety, citing the alarming statistic that nearly 1.80 lakh people lost their lives in road accidents in 2024. Of these, 30,000 fatalities were due to not wearing helmets, Gadkari added.

“In the meeting, the first priority is for road safety and in the year 2024, 1.80 lakh deaths have occurred in road safety. 30,000 people have died because of not wearing helmets. The second serious thing is that 66% of accidents have occurred in people between the ages of 18 to 34,” Gadkari added.

Gadkari further highlighted the deaths of 10,000 children in road accidents caused by inadequate arrangements at entry and exit points near educational institutions, such as schools and colleges.

1. Cashless treatment coverage:

The program provides health benefit packages for trauma and polytrauma cases to eligible victims at hospitals accredited under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

Coverage can go up to Rs 1.5 lakh per incident with the treatment period limited to seven days from the date of the accident, and is applicable to all motor vehicle-related road accidents.

2. Implementation mechanism:

The National Health Authority (NHA) will work in collaboration with police, hospitals, and state health authorities to execute the program. Victims can access the scheme through an IT platform that integrates the functionalities of the e-Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) application from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the NHA’s Transaction Management System.

3. Compensation for families:

In instances of hit-and-run accidents leading to fatalities, the families of victims will be compensated with the payment of Rs 2 lakh.

Future developments:

Additionally, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently held a two-day workshop on January 6 and 7, 2025, to address challenges and solutions for promoting advancements in India’s road transport sector.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways also launched the “Scheme for Good Samaritan.”

It awards a cash prize of Rs 5000 for each incident, to the good samaritan who, by providing emergency aid and rushing to a hospital or trauma care centre within the Golden Hour of the accident to administer medical treatment, saved the life of a victim of a fatal accident involving a motor vehicle.

NMC to raise Rs 450 crore from capital market for various development works in city

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is scouting the financial market for Rs 450 crore to meet its obligations for the Pohra River pollution abatement project. Additionally, the civic body also has to raise funds for meeting its obligation under Swachh Bharat Mission-2, informed Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari during media interaction at NMC on Wednesday.

Pohra is a big ticket project and taken up under Amrut-2 wherein total outlay is pegged at around Rs 957 crore, of which, the civic body has to contribute 50 percent of the cost. 50 percent funds are coming from Central Government and State Government in equal measure.

Dr Chaudhari mentioned that apart from financial agencies within the country, the civic body is also scouting the international market. “The aim is to get the lowest rate of interest so that repayment should not add to the financial burden of NMC,” he said. On bifurcation of the funds, he said, “Total contribution for Pohra from NMC would be Rs 478.51 crore, while Rs 239.25 crore would be received from Central and State Government respectively. NMC is awaiting a balance fund of around Rs 300 crore from the 15th Finance Commission. Once the fund is received, it would provide a financial cushion to NMC,” added Dr Chaudhari.

Apart from Pohra, the NMC has also identified Nag River for combating the pollution and for the same, a consultant has been appointed. Pohra river area primarily covers Nagpur South West and Nagpur South Assembly segments, wherein plan is to lay a new sewage network and also install sewage treatment plants so that the river water remains free from pollution.

To a question, he said, “As to Nag River, the consultant has started engineering work relating to survey of the river stretch and also the area from where a new sewage network is to be laid. Once the mapping is done, the tender process would begin and for the same, five stages have been identified by the Government. In future, NMC might also need to raise funds from the market for meeting 15 per cent contribution of nearly Rs 1,927 crore for the Nag river pollution abatement project.”

But, as of now, on Nag river, the project envisages laying an interceptor, enhancing STPs capacity to 72 MLD, diverting all outlets opening into the river to STPs, and laying a new sewage network which will be nearly 1,500 to 2,000 kms long. Dr Chaudhari added that, if need arises, the encroachments on river bed, those that are blocking water flow, would also be removed. Also, NMC will start the recruitment to fill in the vacancies, mostly technical manpower as the same would come handy in enhancing field presence.

The civic body also expects the arrival of a new lot of e-buses from this year onwards and a team is leaving to verify the prototype prepared by the company. The tender for running the buses has also been finalised and fixed at Rs 64/km. NMC is also awaiting a nod from Urban Development Department (UDD) regarding lowering of physical attributes for recruitment of new firemen, as the Fire Brigade is severely understaffed.

Municipal Commissioner also informed that civic administration has en mass promoted persons appointed on compassionate grounds to Group C posts from earlier Group D posts, taking into consideration their educational qualification. In future, NMC will directly appoint compassionate appointed employees to Group III posts. On the controversy surrounding manipulation in data about reduction of legacy waste, the Commissioner said he personally visited Bhandewadi earlier in the day and inspected the site where bio-mining work is on. To counter any chances of data manipulation, NMC has directed the company to share SCADA links and also affix GPS on the vehicles used for transporting waste.

Besides, it has also been decided to appoint a third party to keep a watch on bio-mining work and the cost will be footed by the company itself. About the contentious hawkers matter, the Commissioner was of the view that the Town Vending Committee would have to decide on the number of hawkers to be given the license. Once the process is complete, then the notified hawkers zone can see the actual presence of hawkers and enable the civic body to evict those operating outside the demarcated area.

Nagpur Police bust nationwide cyber fraud network operating from Kolkata

Nagpur: In a significant breakthrough, Nagpur Rural Police dismantled a Kolkata-based gang of cyber fraudsters that duped over 160 Maharashtra residents in a nationwide scam. Operating since 2021, the gang lured victims into renting their land for mobile tower installations, promising hefty monthly returns. Police investigations revealed the gang pocketed crores, utilizing a network of rented bank accounts to mask their operations.

The nationwide scam left over 160 residents of Maharashtra conned by tele-callers, who would lure them to rent out land for erecting cell phone towers for hefty monthly returns. Another 90 individuals have come under police scanner for ‘renting’ out bank accounts to the tricksters, who pocketed crores, before being busted by Nagpur rural police after a four-month-long investigation.

The crackdown

A four-month-long investigation, spearheaded by Assistant SP Anil Mhaske of Saoner Division, culminated in a 40-day operation in Kolkata and its outskirts. The police team raided three call centres and arrested 40 individuals, including 14 men and 19 women. Over 100 mobile phones, 175 SIM cards, and Rs 7 crore spread across 65 bank accounts were frozen.

Key accused Alauddin Sheikh alias Shrimant Bacchhar, Pranab Mondal, Siddharth Das, Sourabh Chaki alias Deep Sen, and Monoranjan Maiti alias Babuda, all residents of West Bengal, are now lodged in Nagpur Central Jail. Another accomplice, Rabindra Chatterjee, remains at large.

Modus operandi

The gang used tele-callers to cold-call victims, primarily targeting landowners. They promised lucrative monthly rentals of ₹20,000-₹25,000, job offers for family members, and an immediate payout of ₹25 lakh upon signing fraudulent agreements. To gain trust, the scammers shared fake government certificates and company documents via PDFs.

Victims were further ensnared by local agents, Vaibhav Dawande and Kamlesh Gajbhiye, who approached economically vulnerable individuals in Saoner and Kalmeshwar. They rented bank accounts under the guise of collecting donations for an orphanage, paying account holders ₹4,000-₹5,000 monthly while misusing the accounts for high-value transactions.

Unravelling the racket

The scam came to light when Nagpur district bank customers raised alarms over suspicious transactions in their accounts. The investigation uncovered 130 bank accounts used by the gang, with total transactions exceeding ₹15 crore.

Through cyber surveillance, CCTV analysis, and technical expertise, police traced the gang’s activities to multiple Kolkata locations, including Salt Lake Sector V and New Town. Maiti, one of the key players, was identified withdrawing cash from ATMs immediately after deposits.

Lavish lifestyles exposed

The fraudsters invested heavily in properties and luxuries: Mondal purchased a ₹1 crore apartment in Kolkata’s New Town, a ₹20 lakh Mercedes, and made a ₹36 lakh fixed deposit in his father’s name. The gang leased a hotel in Darjeeling for ₹30 lakh annually and engaged in benami investments.

Police action and public advisory

Nagpur Rural Police filed a 4,200-page chargesheet and froze ₹7 crore in assets. SP (Rural) Harssh A Poddar emphasized the robust case built to ensure convictions and deter future scams.

The gang, which invested the money, created nationwide networks of bank customers whose accounts were rented out for a monthly return of around Rs 4,000-5,000, but transacted lakhs of rupees in them. “A watertight case is being built to ensure conviction and create deterrence,” said Poddar, adding fraudsters underestimated the expertise of rural police. “The racketeers used technology to mask their footprint, but were exposed by our advanced cyber and digital tools,” he said.

Police said Dawande and Gajbhiye approached economically weak residents, stating their accounts could be hired on a monthly rental for an organisation collecting donations for an orphanage.

The first FIR was lodged by Praful Gahukar with Saoner police station after getting high value transaction messages on his mobile number. Earlier, Gahukar said he was approached by Vaibhav Dawande, a resident of Ajani, Kamptee tehsil, and Kamlesh Gajbhiye, a resident of Kawrapeth, Nagpur, saying they are planning to open an orphanage and to receive donation they require to open bank accounts.

Assistant SP Mhaske lauded the dedicated efforts of officers like Assistant Inspector Ashishsingh Thakur and constables Nitesh Pusam, Sangeeta Gawade, and others in cracking the case. “This operation highlights the expertise of rural police in tackling advanced cyber crimes,” Mhaske remarked.

Meanwhile, Saoner police have urged citizens to contact them in case they too have been duped in the name of the Jio Company as there is provision under MPIDA wherein their money could be returned.

As the investigation deepens, Nagpur Rural Police’s operation stands as a testament to the power of teamwork, technological acumen, and persistence in curbing cyber fraud.

Loud & Clear: Nagpur cops crush 440 noisy bike silencers in style!!

Nagpur: In a loud and clear message aimed at combating noise pollution and encouraging responsible driving, the Nagpur City Traffic Police on Thursday destroyed 440 modified silencers seized from motorcycles.

The event, conducted at Samvidhan Square (RBI Square) as part of the ongoing Road Safety Month campaign, was spearheaded by Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal. Addressing the gathering, Singal emphasized the city’s commitment to cracking down on illegal modifications in vehicles that disturb public peace.

“Using illegal parts like modified silencers not only violates the law but also harms the environment and disrupts the tranquility of our city. Such practices will not be tolerated,” Singal warned, highlighting the strict measures planned to curb such violations.

The City Traffic Police had conducted a special campaign against modified silencers on two-wheelers. The campaign took place from January 5 to 9, targeting two-wheelers equipped with illegal after-market silencers causing distress to citizens, particularly senior citizens. “The campaign, initiated after a surge in complaints about the shrill noise caused by these modifications, resulted in the seizure of 440 illegal silencers from local two-wheeler vehicles,” mentioned Dr Singal.

The seized illegal silencers were destroyed using a road-roller in the presence of police officials, school students, and citizens at Samvidhan Square on Thursday. The police officials noted that violators were penalised under Sections 190(2) and 198 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and a total fine of Rs 4 lakh was recovered from them.

The modified silencers amplify noise, mimicking the sound of high-performance sports bikes. “These silencers not only cause noise pollution but also encourage speeding, as the sound increases with speed,” said DCP (Traffic) Archit Chandak. Besides confiscating and destroying the silencers, police fined violators over Rs 4 lakh during the campaign.

Addressing the media, Singal said that the silencers were destroyed publicly to create awareness among citizens and ensure they take the rules seriously. “The Supreme Court has set guidelines for permissible noise levels. Any activity that exceeds these limits is illegal and will not be tolerated,” he said. The CP also revealed plans to extend the crackdown to target manufacturers and garage owners who facilitate the installation of such silencers.

DCP Chandak said garage owners were issued notices, and violators were fined and made aware of the consequences of modifying vehicles illegally. “The action sends a clear message to citizens that such practices will attract penalties and stricter enforcement in the future,” Chandak said.

Singal also noted that this was just the beginning of a larger campaign to address noise pollution. He highlighted that other sources of noise pollution, such as loudspeakers and DJs, would also face strict action. “Laws must be abided by all. Organizing such public events helps spread awareness and instil a sense of responsibility in the community,” he said.

The event drew significant public attention, with many school students attending the occasion and carrying posters supporting the road safety campaign. Joint commissioner Nisar Tamboli, along with traffic officers from across the city, also participated in the initiative.
