Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

DSC_0037 (2)Nagpur: A murder convict who was serving life term has escaped from the Central Jail on Wardha Road on September 18, 2014 afternoon. The escaped convict is identified as Suraj Arkel aged 40 years and a resident of Wardha. Suraj was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Jail officers had alerted Wardha police and other suspected areas to search for Arkel. Immediately after escaping he had picked up his minor girl-friend and fled the city. However, with the cops on his trail, he was apprehended with his girl-friend from his aunt’s house (Bua’s house) in Murtizapur.

Brief History:

This escaped Convict Suraj Arkhed had somehow succeeded in procuring a mobile phone inside the Central Jail. He used to often help other convicts to contact their loved ones from the jail through his mobile phone. He used to allegedly take an exhorbitant charges for enabling them to talk with their loved ones. He used to give some part of the earned money to the officials and authorities too. (This is under investigation now). One thief too landed in the Central Jail. The thief expressed to Suraj, his desire to talk to his sister who was studying in XIIth class. Suraj gave the mobile phone to the thief and he could talk to his sister. After that this became a regular affair. However, after the thief’s conversation, Suraj too started conversing with the girl and a romance bloomed. Sources said that Suraj spoke with the girl for hours. Soon the girl started coming to meet him in the jail. 15 day’s ago, when the girl had come to meet Suraj, He had gifted her with a mobile costing 15,000 from the money earned in the jail.

When the romance bloomed to full extent, the budding lovers planned to escape from Nagpur and get married. Suraj was helped by another convict named Prakash. Suraj had only 1.5 years left to finish his sentence. By this time, Suraj and 20 other convicts were selected to do farming work outside the jail. Taking advantage of the fact that no special watch is kept on these 20 convicts, Suraj escaped from the site. On interrogation of the couple, it came to light that the girl had arrived at the rendezvous point in an auto. As soon as he arrived, the auto sped to the Bus Stand. While travelling to the bus stand, Suraj changed into civil dress and dumped his convicts uniform somewhere. After escaping, Suraj allegedly called the mother of the girl, a resident of Gaddigodam area and told her that they are escaping from Nagpur and will return only after marriage. However, as soon as the girl went missing, the parents of the girl had lodged a complaint with the Sadar police station. Meanwhile, the escape of a convict had police the police machinery on action.

As soon as Suraj talked to the mother of the girl, he switched off the mobile and switched it on only in Akola. Sources said that he first went to Amravati, from there he went to Murtizapur and finally to Akola. The cops managed to apprehend him and his girl friend from his Bua’s house in Akola.

After bringing the escaped convict Suraj to Nagpur, the cops of Sadar Police registered fresh cases against him. They produced him in the court, where he was awarded PCR till September 22, 2014. The cops had later handed over the girl to her parents.

One very startling fact has come to light, the easy availability of mobile phones in Central Jail. The escape of a convict also brings out the laxity shown by the Jail authorities.

Since it was late, he was supervising the closing operations, when the cops suddenly arrived and started using very obscene abuses which included abuses on mother and sister and asking the staff, why they have kept the hotel open till now. According to Bagdi, the time was only 12:10 am. The staff in-turn replied to the cops that whatever, they want to ask, they should ask their owner Ajay Bagdi who is sitting in the hotel.

The cops, he alleged, came and threw everyone outside and forced the staff to close the hotel. Ajay Bagdi had called the emergency number 100 to report about the police misbehavior with him and his staff. Nagpur:
High-voltage dramas were witnessed at Lakadganj and Sadar Police Stations when a property dealer was thrashed by people for allegedly calling a married woman on her mobile phone and threatening her for money. The incident was fallout of some financial dispute between the property dealer and the woman. The matter first went to Lakadganj Police Station and later was sent to Sadar police. The property dealer, identified as Lorrence Nair, is reported to have a good reach with a political party and the people who thrashed him also belong to a political party. The Sadar Police Station was turned into a hot scene of political activity as many bigwigs reached there and as a result, no offence was registered in the case. According to Sadar PI Rathod, neither of the parties lodged complaints and hence offence was not registered.

According to sources, the woman, resident of Lakadganj, had got married recently. Following some financial dispute, the property dealer was allegedly calling the woman on her phone and harassing her for money. However, when the brother of woman came to know about this harassment, he lodged a complaint with Lakadganj police. But the police, after considering the issue connected with married life of the woman, registered a non-cognizable offence. Allegations are that even after the complaint, the property dealer continued to torment the woman. Fed up with the frequent calls, the woman again narrated the ordeal to her brother. Enraged by the actions of Lorrence Nair, the brother of the woman decided to teach him a lesson. On Friday (September 19), when the property dealer was sitting near a ‘Paan Thela’ in Sadar area, the woman’s brother and his accomplices reached the spot and, first beat him up severely and then took Nair to Lakadganj Police Station in a red-coloured car. However, Lorrence told police that he was first taken to Kalamna and again thrashed in a closed room, said the sources.

However, the case took a curious turn when Sadar police came to know that the people, who had thrashed the property dealer have taken him to Lakadganj Police Station, a team of Sadar DB Squad was rushed to Lakadganj. The DB Squad brought the woman’s brother, his accomplices and the property dealer to Sadar Police Station. Soon the word spread and the top leaders of both the political parties started descending the Police Station. However, surprisingly, no complaint was lodged by any of the warring parties and hence no offence was registered by police.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Sunday Special : City shopping to rocket new high as Diwali coincides poll parade

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

diwali_shopping_nagpurNagpur: This October, Nagpur will witness a great shopping tsunami ahead of Diwali. And the reason behind the projected boom is but obvious – the assembly elections are also coinciding with the festival.

Various trade organizations have put this year’s festive business thrice the normal purchase, thanks to the freebies the poll candidates are expected to offer in a bid to secure their Poll positions. Perhaps this is for the first time in near history that assembly polls are crossing path with the festive occasion. The city will go to the polls around the same period when voters are busy in their Diwali shopping.

Ideal gifting occasion!

While the polling for all 288 assembly seats including 6 of Nagpur will take place on October 15 and the results coming on October 19, there will be very little margin for the candidates to come out and campaign, given the major parties like BJP and Congress have not yet announced their picks. Diwali will be celebrated across the country on October 23. This makes a perfect occasion for all the candidates to adjust their campaign in limited time with multiple festive gifting options, sources said.

Trade to benefit

A member of city’s renowned trade organization on condition of anonymity told Nagpur Today that the election candidates will be trying to woo the voters by delivering goodies in the form of Diwali gifts. “Be it electronics like TV, Refrigerator, Mobiles or Laptops or the gift hampers carrying other goodies, the ultimate benefactor will be the trade. While people will be receiving more, they will end up buying more as Diwali is synonymous to splurge. Following the sops, this year the urge to buy will be on the surge,” he added.

Cash or kind… Never mind!

Poll experts feel that this year the candidates will have the safer option of handing out the gifts rather than money in order to avoid the prying eyes of election officials. Diwali is falling little earlier this year. The festivities will add up to the poll campaign and the celebration will make way for the politicians to have their way by passing on to their potential voters.

Tough task for poll officers

Poll pundits refer to the situation in which the electoral officers are expected to fall, where in, it would be too difficult for them to keep a tab on the flow of funds. “Diwali and Dhan Teras are such occasions when gifts in all the forms are prevalent and prospective poll fighters will definitely take advantage of the hour. While keeping close vigil will check the unfair means to some extent, keeping such activities completely out of scene will be a herculean task. For now it sounds impossible to apply full stop on gifts and offerings, given the big festival is also around,” quipped an officer who wish not be named.

Traders look forward to compensate last season

During last Diwali the business prospects though appeared promising, did not deliver desired fruits in terms of quantum of sale. The traders have for this reason not taken any chance this time. Instead of waiting for the eleventh hour boom, many shopping destinations in the city have started creating a festive atmosphere by offering Diwali discounts, much before the actual buying will pick up. The advertisements occupying the newspaper space run with Diwali captions to arouse buying mood among the citizens. “We too are expecting the big surge this year as we have to make up for the losses or break even many from our fraternity faced during previous Diwali session. So polls or no polls we have to anyway manage profit this year. Its like do or die for us,” a mall owner told Nagpur Today when quizzed in this regard.

Nagpur Today View – Do not vote those who buy your vote

Diwali, as the legends have it, is meant to take our body, mind and soul out of darkness of evil and leads all towards the light of all the good things in life. This year, the festival of light and prosperity is coinciding with the festival of democracy in which we will have the chance to choose between our prosperity and irony. So do not let short term gains rule over your decision to choose long term prosperity for us and rest of our fellow citizens. Nagpur Today appeals to all its dedicated readers not to fall prey to the tricks and tactics of such candidates who try to lure you into gifts in exchange of your vote. Rest assured that the one who is buying your vote would not think twice while filling his pockets at the cost of your share of development. So the decision is your’s …

Déjà vu: RTMNU’s 100th Convocation function: Striking similarities of the date and dignitaries

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: It has often been remarked that “History repeats itself.” Historic recurrence is the repetition of similar events in history. The coming September 26 will witness the striking similarities of the day and dignitary when Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) organizes 100th Convocation Ceremony. The 30th Convocation Ceremony was celebrated on September 26, 1950 and the chief guest was the first President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad. And, now exactly after 64 years, the 100th Convocation Ceremony will be held on September 26 and the former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will grace the function as the chief guest.

Even though the 100th Convocation of RTMNU is being attended by former President Dr Kalam and the 30th Convocation was attended by the then President Rajendra Prasad, the grace between the two is similar and unparallel as well. For the history’s sake, the then President Gyani Zail Singh had attended the RTMNU’s 73rd Convocation on February 8, 1985.

Visit cancelled:

It may be recalled that due to the contentious issue of 1378 degrees the 100th Convocation Ceremony, which was scheduled to be held on November 16, 2013, could not be held as President of India Pranab Mukherjee refused to be chief guest and cancelled the visit. The affected students belonged to the tainted 250 colleges that had not a single regular teacher on their roll. The last minute cancellation of visit by President Mukherjee had left the university in the dock.

Several bigwigs graced the ceremony:

Top guns among those who had attended Nagpur University’s Convocations in the past included the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Home Minister Vallabhbhai Patel, the last Governor General of India C Rajgopalchari, eminent poetess and politician Dr Sarojini Naidu, Mysore’s Diwan M Mirza Ismail, prominent businessman Homi Modi, and other distinguished national personalities.

First Convocation held on November 28, 1924:

The first Convocation of Nagpur University was organized on November 28, 1924 and was graced by the then University’s Chancellor Frank Sleigh. In the University’s history, two convocations were held in a single year 20 times and three convocations two times.

This year on September 26:

The latest Convocation of Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University will be held on September 26 at 2.30 pm in Law College’s Rao Bahadur D Laxminarayan Playground.

sharad donekar with kripal tumaneनागपुर टुडे
