Nagpur/Chandrapur: Yet another adult tiger was found dead in the Chandrapur buffer range of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) on Sunday evening.

This is the second tiger death in the same range within 10 days and seventh in the district this year.

Deputy Director, TATR (buffer), Khusagra Pathak, said the carcass was found in the forest under Warvat beat under Chandrapur (buffer) range in the evening during routine patrol.

He overruled the possibility of foul play in the death claiming that all the valuable body parts of the feline were intact. He further informed that the carcass was 8-10 days old and hence, is in a highly-decomposed state. The veterinary doctor who visited the spot even failed to identify the sex of the feline due to its condition.

Earlier, a tiger, injured in a territorial fight with another tiger, had died in the same Chandrapur (buffer) range on February 26. This is the seventh tiger death in Chandrapur district this year.

A total of 40 tigers have died in the country since January this year. Out of these, nine were from Maharashtra with Chandrapur accounting for seven.

Nagpur: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday said that they recently conducted search and survey operations at 15 places in Nagpur and Mumbai in a case related to a Ponzi Scheme fraud of around Rs 150 crore committed by one Pankaj Mehadia and others.

The ED conducted searches on March 3 and seized gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 5.51 crore, cash of Rs 1.21 crore, digital devices and various incriminating documents during the searches.

The ED said that the searches were held at the residences and offices of Mehadia, Lokesh Jain and Karthik Jain, who are the main accused in this scam.

The office and residential premises of the main beneficiaries were also raided.

The ED initiated PMLA investigation based on an FIR registered at Sitabuldi Police Station, Nagpur, against five people — Pankaj Mehadiya, Lokesh Jain, Kartik Jain, Balmukund Lalchand Keyal and Premlata Nandlal Mehadiya.

They allegedly committed a fraud and caused huge loss to their investors to the tune of several crores of rupees.

The ED said that their PMLA investigation has established that Pankaj Mehadia along with other accomplices were running a Ponzi scheme and lured various investors by promising to give 12 per cent assured profit after deducting TDS on the investments made from the year 2004 to 2017.

“Throughout the period of 2005 to 2016, with the malafide intention of cheating and siphoning off the investors’ money, the accused persons ran the Ponzi scheme giving assured returns to win over the investors and thus luring the investors to invest in larger amounts in the associated companies and ultimately did not return the money.

“In order to divert the money and to give the transactions a tinge of legitimacy, transactions worth more than Rs 150 crore have been affected in the Bank accounts and it is suspected that most of these transactions are not backed by genuine business deals and are in the nature of accommodation entries,” the official said.

Further investigation in the matter is on.

Nagpur: In a rare incident, a 41-year-old man in Nagpur has died after taking two Viagra pills while drinking alcohol, news.au.com reported, citing a study published in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

In their case study, the doctors revealed that the man had met up with a female friend at a hotel where he downed two 50mg tablets of sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Viagra. The unidentified man, with no significant past medical and surgical history, was also consuming alcohol at the time, they said.

The next morning, the 41-year-old developed “uneasiness”. He was also vomiting, and his female friend urged him to seek medical help. However, he dismissed her concerns, telling her he had experienced the symptoms previously as well.

Once his condition started to get worse he was rushed to the hospital. But unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival. According to the study, the man died of a cerebrovascular haemorrhage, which is when oxygen delivery to the brain is reduced.

“A 41-year-old male with no significant past medical and surgical history was staying at a hotel room with a female friend; he had consumed 2 tablets of sildenafil (50 mg each) and alcohol at night. The next morning, he developed uneasiness following which he was taken to the Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” the study read.

The man suffered a haemorrhage.

In post-mortem scans, the doctors found a 300g mass of clotted blood. They concluded that a mixture of alcohol and medication, as well as pre-existing high-blood pressure, led to his death.

The authors of the study stated that they published this rare case in order to raise awareness about the risks of taking erectile dysfunction medication without medical advice.

Nagpur: Hundreds of students could find themselves in trouble as there is a possibility of ban on admissions in 380 colleges affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) located in four districts. The Directorate of Higher and Technical Education has warned of debarring colleges that do not have National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) ratings. Out of 507 colleges affiliated to RTMNU, only 127 colleges are accredited by NAAC, a media report said.

According to the report, many colleges affiliated to RTMNU are currently facing the problem of student shortage. Colleges lacking the facilities are unable to find students and every year, 25,000 seats in graduate and post-graduate remain vacant. In spite of this, the State Government is giving sanction to new colleges. These institutes are colleges in name as they lack necessary infrastructure and quality, the report added.

This is why NAAC accreditation has been made mandatory. However, despite repeated instructions, most of the colleges have not gone for accreditation. Irked by this, the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education has warned of swift action. It has been made mandatory for the educational institutions and colleges which do not have done NAAC assessment to do it before March 31. Those who have done it before but their status is inactive, have been instructed to activate it, the report said.

There are 507 colleges affiliated to Nagpur University. 143 colleges are aided and 10 colleges are government while 354 colleges are permanently unaided. The number of women’s colleges is 52. The number of co-education colleges with Arts, Commerce and Science courses is 306. There are 35 to 40 engineering colleges, 85 teaching and physical education colleges, 15 pharmacy colleges, 10 law colleges and 13 MBA colleges. Out of 143 aided colleges under RTMNU, 80 colleges have received NAAC accreditation.

However, 63 colleges have not done so. It includes 41 colleges in Nagpur, 12 in Wardha, 7 in Bhandara and 3 in Gondia. Earlier too many colleges in Nagpur faced action for not getting NAAC accreditation.

Nagpur: In a case that seems inspired by a movie, Nagpur police have arrested a man who posed as a ‘Desk Officer’ of a Supreme Court committee for conducting an examination for clerical recruitment. The conman also went to a police station to get permission for conducting an exam for aspirants.

The accused has been identified as Vijay Rajendra Ransingh (32), a native of Narsala village of Osmanabad district but currently staying at Hajiyani Manzil, Mahur, Yavatmal. The fraudster introduced himself as a Desk Officer at the Supreme Court, police said.

According to police, the accused Vijay has completed his BPharm. He has been cheating job seekers for some time now by various means. He has an ‘office’ near the Collectorate in Yavatmal. The accused duped many jobless youths on the promise of jobs in the Supreme Court. He accepted around Rs 1 lakh from each youth for the job. He claimed the SC committee was holding an exam for 20 posts through Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court in Nagpur on March 5. He called the youths to Nagpur for the examination. He also arranged their stay at Ravi Bhavan by presenting a fake official letter.

Similarly, the accused asked Adarsh Vidya Mandir in Gandhibagh to provide space for holding the exam. The school management agreed and allegedly got involved in organising the exam. On March 4, the accused Vijay gave Kotwali police another letter requesting them to provide two homeguard jawans at the exam centre. The letter was from ‘Suprement Court Committee, Government of India, Desk and Survey Officer, Nagpur and Aurangabad Bench’. Kotwali police found something fishy and contacted Yavatmal District Magistrate’s Office and others to verify.

The police grew suspicious of the identity card and conducted verification. When the police got confirmed information about the bogus identity card, the accused was grilled by the police. An offence under Sections 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 of Indian Penal Code was registered by Kotwali police and the accused was arrested.

Police later raided Vijay’s house in Mahur and office in Yavatmal. They are learnt to have found a large number of fake documents. The fake letter presented by Vijay also has apparently forged the signature of Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju. On the basis of this letter, the accused Vijay Ransingh stayed in the government guest house.

Nagpur: The horrifying news of a 15-year-old getting pregnant and delivering the baby by herself has given chills to people across the city. The news also shows the mental blockage girls or women still have while seeking consultation regarding abortion from a gynaecologist.

Till 24 weeks, a woman has the right to abort the child, as per the court’s ruling, issued on September 29. 2022. On the very same day, the Supreme Court of India declared abortion a fundamental right.

Dr Vaidehi Marathe told Nagpur today that a woman can decide to abort their pregnancy up to 24 weeks, however, when a minor gets pregnant the case turns into a very sensitive one. “The legal dynamics in such cases (pregnancy in minors) completely change. Abortion is still legal in these cases but they also fall into a very stringent act called the POCSO Act. Such pregnancies can be considered as rape, ” she added while commenting on the heinous case.

Marathe also said that seeking abortion is completely legal and safe when the woman is above the age of 18. “While aborting, the woman doesn’t even require the consent of her partner or even her parents as she is considered an adult,” she said.
