International Mother’s Day 2021: Celebrated around the world as a day to honour mothers, and motherly bonds within the family, International Mother’s Day is an important occasion that falls on the second Sunday of May every year. As such, it does not have a fixed date, and this year, it will be celebrated on May 9.

Why is it celebrated?
Mothers deserve to be celebrated every day. Not just in India but even around the world, they do not often get their due. Their tireless contributions towards the family, the many sacrifices made by them are worthy of a mention and acknowledgement. Mother’s Day, as such, comes as a reminder to think about mothers, and mother-like figures in our life, who inspire us every day, and make us want to be better people.

History
It is believed the modern Mother’s Day celebration first began in the US, when a woman by the name of Anna Jarvis wanted the day to be commemorated because her own mother had expressed such a desire.

When she passed away, Jarvis took up the initiative and held a memorial for her, circa 1908, three years after her death. It was done at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in West Virginia. It is said while she herself did not attend it, she sent a telegram to the attendees, highlighting the significance of the day, along with five hundred white carnations.

What started as Jarvis’ way of honouring her mother, got picked up by other countries over the years, as a way to love, cherish and honour mothers everywhere.

Today, with a pandemic raging on, it is all the more important for you to hold your mother close, and tell her how much she means to you. If you have someone who is like a mother to you, remind them of their importance, and do something special for them — like play them their favourite movie, cook them a meal, or simply pamper them — today.

Happy Mother’s Day 2021

MSEDCL cuts trees under power lines instead of trimming branches

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Over a 100 trees planted by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) during state government’s ambitious plantation drive are being chopped by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), complain environmentalists.

In the last fortnight, two incidents have come to the fore where large number of fully-grown trees along national highways were ruthlessly pruned. While the first incident took place at NH-7 near Kamptee some days back, the second incident recently took place on NH-69 near Saoner.

Photographic evidence shared by activists shows that trees of different species were brutally chopped off from the main stem. According to them, MSEDCL has powers to trim branches in case they pose a threat to overhead electric wires. “This right has been given to electricity distribution agencies across the country. However, instead of trimming required branches, MSEDCL completely cut the trees along national highways near Nagpur,” said green activist Shrikant Deshpande.

He further alleged that in rural areas it is easier to harm green cover. “In Nagpur, we are alert and so are the citizens. The awareness about importance of saving trees is increasing. However along national highways, there is no scrutiny and the agency took advantage of that,” said Deshpande.

Adding that the green cover in rural areas too is depleting, Deshpande added, “Trees along highways act as a barrier in controlling air pollution. They are also habitats of various species of birds.”

Sources learnt that NHAI officials too were opposed to the action as the trees were planted and maintained by them. According to activists, NHAI should file a police complaint in the matter. NHAI officials confirmed that trees were being felled by MSEDCL and that they will take initiate necessary action. MSEDCL officials did not respond to calls.

This is not the first time that trees under overhead wires were cut. “This has become a repeated phenomenon. We understand that branches pose a threat to cables and can lead to a breakdown and interrupted power supply. MSEDCL should sensitize its workers to not cut entire trees but only trim the required branches,” said Deshpande. Ahead of monsoon, MSEDCL is trimming and cutting trees under overhead wires as its routine activity.

While Online Banking Fraud — where miscreants will pose as your bank officials and try to derive your credentials, PIN, OTO on various pretexts — is the most common offence when it comes to cyber crime, Sextortion — a serious crime that occurs when someone threatens to distribute your private and sensitive material if you don’t provide them images of a sexual nature, sexual favours, or money — is the most treading crime these days.

Today’s Petrol price in Nagpur is ₹ 97.74 per litre- Current Diesel Price in Nagpur is ₹ 87.72 per Litre

Nagpur: Petrol and diesel prices on Monday hit record highs across the country after rates were increased for the fifth time in a week, following which Maharashtra joined Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in the league of states where petrol rates breached the Rs 100-a-litre mark.

Petrol price was hiked by 26 paise a litre and diesel by 33 paise per litre, according to a price notification by state-owned fuel retailers.

This was the fifth increase in prices since May 4, when the state-owned oil firms ended an 18-hiatus in rate revision during assembly elections in states like West Bengal.

The increase took petrol and diesel prices to their highest-ever level. In Delhi, petrol now comes for Rs 91.53 per litre and diesel is priced at Rs 82.06 per litre.

While petrol prices had crossed the Rs 100-mark in some places in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh a few days back, Maharashtra’s Parbhani joined the league on Monday. Petrol in Parbhani was priced at Rs 100.20 a litre, while in Bhopal it came for Rs 99.55 a litre.

The fuel is sold at Rs 102.42 a litre in Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan and at Rs 102.12 in Anuppur of Madhya Pradesh.

This is the second time this year that rates in some parts have crossed the Rs 100-a litre mark. Rates had breached the physiological mark for the first time in mid-February.

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges. Rajasthan levies the highest value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh.

In five increases in the last one week, petrol price has risen by Rs 1.14 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.33 – more than neutralising all of the reduction that came between March 24 and April 15.

After raising petrol price by a record Rs 21.58 per litre and diesel by Rs 19.18 since the government raised excise duty to an all-time high in March last year, state-owned fuel retailers, IOC, BPCL and HPCL had reduced petrol price by 67 paise a litre and diesel by 74 paise per litre effected between March 24 and April 15.

Oil companies, who have in recent months resorted to unexplained freeze in rate revision, had hit a pause button after cutting prices marginally on April 15.

This coincided with electioneering hitting peak to elect new governments in five states including West Bengal.
