Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital organised various events to mark National Eye Donation Fortnight being observed August 25 to September 8, 2019. As part of the event, a rally was taken out by students and staff of Mahatme Eye Hospital. The rally, taken out from Jaiprakash Nagar, Khamla, Ring road and Wardha Road areas, was flagged off by Mayor Nanda Jichkar on Sunday. Students and members of Suretech Nursing College, Mure Memorial Hospital and Brahmakumari’s also enthusiastically joined the rally and spread the message of eye donation among people.

Congratulating the initiative, the Mayor reiterated the importance of eye donation and how crucial it is to help those who suffer from corneal blindness. She noted the decades-long work done by Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital, especially the fact that the first eye bank in Nagpur was started by Padmashri Dr. Vikas Mahatme, Rajya Sabha member, in 1986. Dr. Sunita Mahatme, President of SMM Eye Welfare Charitable Trust that runs the Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital, said that there are no restrictions of religion, caste, blood group, age, and sex when it comes to donating eyes. She encouraged all Nagpurians to take the pledge of eye donation and register as eye donors. Eye donation happens only after donor’s death and the precious initial hours after death are the only window available to carry out eye donation. Having a donor pledge card is therefore helpful in taking timely action.

The rally started from the Somalwada campus of Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital at 8 am and passed through Sita Nagar Road, Bhaji Mandi Chowk, Khamla Market area. At Orange City Hospital Square, the rally turned towards Chhatrapati Square on Ring Road and then continued south on to Wardha Road, culminating at the Somalwada campus of the hospital. Supporting their friends and colleagues at MEBEH, students and staff from Suretech Nursing College, Mure Memorial Hospital and Brahmakumari’s showed up in their institute uniforms and enthusiastically shouted slogans.

Leading the rally, Dr. Nikhilesh Wairagade, Cornea specialist and Medical Superintendent at Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital, stated that many corneally blind people can regain vision through corneal transplantation but have to spend a lot of time on waiting lists to get a suitable cornea. With greater awareness of eye donation, Dr. Wairagade hoped that people will come forth and pledge to donate their eyes.

Hospital Administration announced that Mahatme Eye Bank Eye Hospital will continue to raise awareness about eye diseases and community ophthalmology issues through such activities, especially on the occasion of the forthcoming World Sight Day on October 10, 2019.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Beware!! Offenders think twice! Now, violation of traffic rules will attract harsher penalty as the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act came into force from September 1.

Be ready to cough up Rs 10,000 fine or cool heels in jail for drunken driving. Similarly, not giving way to ambulances or fire brigade will also attract a penalty of Rs 10,000 or imprisonment or both, in some cases.

The Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, which was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind last month aims at stricter punishment for violation of traffic regulations.

Not wearing seat belt, drunk and dangerous driving, over-speeding, jumping red lights, driving without insurance and overloading vehicles will also attract higher penalties. If two-wheeler owners are caught riding without helmets, they will not only have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 but could have their licences suspended for the next three months.

The stricter rules have been implemented to imbibe a sense of responsibility among citizens as it could lead to a reduction in the number of traffic rule violations in the country. But the rules are also aimed at increasing accountability. Under the fresh rules, a road contractor can also be penalised for failing to maintain standards pertaining to road design. In fact, enforcement authorities will have to pay twice the penalty for any offence committed.

New penalties for traffic rule violations:
• Drunken driving: Rs 10,000
• Not giving way to emergency vehicles: Rs 10,000
• Driving despite disqualification: Rs 10,000
• Aggregators (Uber/Ola) violating driving licence norms: Up to Rs 1 lakh
• Over-speeding: Rs 1,000- 2,000
• Driving without insurance: Rs 2,000
• Driving without helmets: Rs 1,000 (and 3 months suspension of licence)
• Road offence by juveniles: The guardian/owner to be deemed to be guilty with a penalty of Rs 25,000 and 3 years imprisonment and cancellation of registration of the vehicle
• Traffic violations: Rs 500
• Disobedience of orders of authorities: Rs 2,000
• Penalty for unauthorised use of vehicles sans licence: Rs 5,000
• Driving without licence: Rs 5,000
• Dangerous driving: Rs 5,000

Nagpur: Heavy rains with strong winds battered the city in the late evening crippling normal life. Today being Anant Chaturdashi, the 10-day Ganeshotsav got off to a start. Although lakhs of devotees welcomed Bappa and took idols to their homes by morning itself, Sarvajanik Mandals faced sort of problems in the wake of downpour.

Most of the Mandals traditionally take out huge idols in the evening in procession and to the beats of dhol tasha. However, the rains failed to dampen the enthusiasm and the Sarvajanik Mandals made adequate arrangements and installed idols of Vighnaharta in pandals as usual with fanfare and gaiety.

The heavy rains flooded the streets and the commuters had to wade through knee deep water. Reports of water gushing in low lying areas and creating problems for residents poured in. Serpentine jams of vehicles were witnessed in many localities.

Mayo nurse saves 9 infants from fire

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

NAGPUR: An alert nurse, Savita Ikhar (47), on night duty saved nine premature babies after a fire broke out at Indira Gandhi Government College and Hospital (IGGMCH) at 2.30am on Saturday. The incident happened after an electrical short circuit at the post birth unit (PBU)-NICU of the department of paediatrics.

In the miraculous escape, Ikhar not only ensured the babies were safely evacuated but also didn’t forget to put ‘billas’ (labels) on them for identification later. She also immediately turned the jumbo oxygen cylinders off to avert a major tragedy in the absence of required firefighting facility and manpower.

The rescued babies, from one to 15-day-old, included four males and five females, who have now been shifted to the general ward of the department. Insiders said Savita was alone in the ward at the time. She had just come out after feeding a baby and was stunned to see the electrical panel with the MCB go up in flames. The department doesn’t have any fire alarm or firefighting equipment. So, she screamed for help. But Savita realized it might be too late, and rushed inside the PBU to evacuate the babies herself. “The short circuit crippled power supply and smoke started entering the PBU-NICU. One of the machine lamps was still working. I first grabbed four babies in both arms after putting on their tags and rushed out with them.

These babies were not on oxygen, so it was easy to move them,” she said. Savita, a mother of two daughters, left the four babies on a gynaecology operation theatre bed nearby before running back to rescue the others.

Seeing the flames, administration staff and nurses too came to help Savita evacuate the remaining five, three of whom were on oxygen. Officials said the MCB was completely burnt and left the PBU without power. Senior and junior residents doctors too arrived at the spot after learning about the incident. The PBU would be out of use for a week as the administration has started repairs for other works too. Following electrical repairs, the PBU will have to be fumigated, which will take two days.

One of the premature babies was referred to Government Medical College but was sent back. Authorities may shift them from general wards as per availability in the NICU ward. The PBU has capacity of six babies but nine were admitted there.

Dean Ajay Keolia said it was only a spark and not a fire incident. “Fire extinguishers were available. The PWD electrical department will find out why the short circuit took place. Voltage fluctuations are being observed at some departments for some days,” he said. Keolia applauded the efforts of Ikhar. “The hospital is an extended family for our nursing and support,” he said.

Cops in ‘haste’: Selective penalization of traffic violators leaves commuters red-faced

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: With the amended Motor Vehicles Act coming into force from September 1, 2019, the traffic policemen in city got themselves activated and started penalizing the offenders in haste. However, what has left the commuters red-faced is the fact that instead of streamlining and controlling the traffic which is their primary role, the cops can be seen on every square busy apprehending/catching errant two-wheeler riders who have not worn helmets. Once caught, they demand the documents and try to fine them for all violations including not wearing helmet, not having insurance renewed, not having a PUC certificate etc.

Auto-rickshaw menace
The auto menace on the stretch of road from University Library to Rani Jhansi Square is rampant. The erring and rude auto-rickshaw drivers blatantly keep soliciting passengers parking their auto-rickshaws in three rows next to the other blocking the smooth flow of the vehicular movement on the busy road. The same can be observed at Variety Square too. It is not that the traffic police officers are not present on the spot. Even when they are present in large numbers, the menace of auto-rickshaw drivers continues with impunity. The personnel of the Traffic Department seem to be turning a Nelson’s eye to this menace. The reasons could be many and very obvious.

When this reporter pointed this out, they just whistled and shouted at them and the auto-rickshaw drivers moved. However, the impact lasted less than five minutes and they were back to square one. Apart from catching the errant two-wheeler riders, if the cops can be more pro-active in controlling the menace of the auto-rickshaw drivers, it would certainly be appreciated.

Traffic Department ‘fears’ four-wheeler owners:
Another menace is that of four-wheeler users. They park their cars and big and fancy SUVs as and where they want with abject disregard for other road users. Even when honked, the drivers/owners seem to turn deaf ear and continue to wait for their passengers.

Even when this was pointed to the former DCP of traffic department, it yielded no results. A look at the stretch of road from Laxmi Bhavan Square to Ram Nagar Square will reveal the facts. While there are 8-9 traffic policemen on duty at Law College Square and Shankar Nagar Square, they do not want to ensure that this stretch is free from traffic jams. So it is easy to surmise that the Traffic cops are “afraid” of penalizing four-wheeler owners and drivers. On any day, it takes about 20 minutes to move on this stretch of the road. On weekends it could be as much as 30-35 minutes. Four-wheeler owners and drivers park their vehicles with total disregard to the discomfort and problems other road users have to undergo while plying on this road.

When it is repeatedly pointed out, some traffic policemen come once a month and penalize a few gullible four-wheeler owner or driver with jammers. That is all. The scenario on narrow stretch between Coffee House Square and Shankar Nagar Square with big business establishments too is the same and one has to really maneuverer their two-wheeler or four-wheeler to reach their destination with lot of hardships.

Can the traffic department play its primary role of ensuring a smooth motorable road for all users by regulating and controlling the traffic, ensuring no-parking on certain stretches of road, penalizing all errant traffic violators irrespective of whether it is two-wheeler or four-wheeler.

Devendra Fadnavis and the pathetic Danve!

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The young Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has exuded ‘confidence’ that he is coming again. The entire state is unanimous that I will be at the helm again. It simply means, the BJP will be forming Government in State under the leadership of Fadnavis again. The faith of people on Fadnavis is intact. State leaders as well as Central leadership is also showing faith on him.

Then why the Union Minister and one of the top BJP leaders Raosaheb Danve s expressed his desire to become Chief Minister? This question is being asked in the inner circle of State BJP and outside it as well. It may be recalled that during a programme in Jalna recently, Danve had made a statement that he had held the post from a Sarpanch to an Union Minister. Now thinking of holding Chief Minister’s post. Dane had also held the post of State BJP President. Even though he is a stalwart in State, a group of political analysts is not ready to give credence to Danve’s ambitions.

This group also knows that Devendra Fadnavis has established his supremacy in the party and State as well. Challenging him is not possible. Then why Danve expressed such desire? If it is considered to be a human weakness, then it should not be seen from political angle. If it is not his ‘political desire’, then Danve should restrain himself. Sweet desires of a fragile mind sometimes bear fruit. He has become Union Minister. He should focus his mind and hard work there only. He should not a miserable figure by his own behaviour.

The alliance between Congress and NCP is on the wane in Maharashtra. While Congress has been afflicted by lack of leadership, NCP is splitting due to internal bickering. Top leaders of both the parties joining either BJP or Shiv Sena. They are also facing the pressure of government machinery. Considering the situation, it will not be surprise if BJP-Shiv Sena alliance gets a ‘walk over’ in Assembly elections!

In this favourable condition, BJP leadership would expect Danve or any other leader refraining themselves in making such statements so that there is no confusion. The BJP leadership has made it clear that for strong and effective leadership of Fadnavis all should cooperate and fall in line.

Further, cops wrote complainant’s name as ‘Pinky’ instead of Vicky

Nagpur: The day after a 32-year-old man was accosted and brutally thrashed by the father-son duo with wooden sticks on the streets of Ramteke Nagar, the sloppiness on the part of Ajni police in the matter has come to the fore. Series of shabby affairs by cops put the complainant Vicky Ravi Godghate under severe mental trauma.

The Ajni police registered the complaint only after officials of DCP Zone 4 intervened into the matter. The Ajni cops had first refused to register his complaint and made him seat for three long hours, Godghate told Nagpur Today while narrating his ordeal.

However, the anguish of Godghate continued even further as despite severe injuries and the fact that he felt unconscious on the road, Ajni police registered the matter as Non-Cognizable (NC) offence against accused Ratan Patil (50) and his son Amol (30). The sloppiness of Ajni police crossed all the limits when they registered Godghate’s name as ‘Pinky’ instead of Vicky in NC complaint.

The complainant Godghate, who owns a photography shop, was on his way to work on his moped when he was intercepted by Amol’s car on Monday morning. In the video that Nagpur Today is in possession, one can clearly see that there was no impact between the Godghate’s moped and Amol’s car. However, Amol came out of the car and started thrashing Godghate black and blue. Amol’s father Ratan who was present nearby with a wooden stick also attacked Godghate hitting blows on his head. Later Amol took that sticks from his father and thrashed Godghate till he fainted.

Following the incident, when Godghate approached Ajni police, he was not only deprived of any help but the cops made him sit for three hours at a stretch. Subsequently, he rushed to DCP Zone 4 office in Ajni. However, the DCP was not in the office and some officials called Ajni police and it is when the complaint was registered against the accused duo.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: A brown spectacled cobra killed a hen and feasted on her nine chicks in village Bijewada Khairi of Ramtek Tehsil on Monday morning. The incident sparked panic among villagers. The highly venomous snake was captured and later released in jungle.

It all started when a family in the village Bijewada Khairi woke up in the morning and went to the chicken den for releasing them in open for foraging. However, the family was taken aback with a spine chilling scene. A 5.4 feet spectacled brown cobra had sneaked into the den and after killing a hen, gobbled up her nine chicks.

After feasting on chicks, the cobra was ‘resting.’ Spotting the highly venomous snake in their courtyard, the family members started shouting in panic. Their shouts attracted attention of nearby villagers and they gathered there out of curiosity. An alert villager Rajkumar Khobragade immediately informed Sarpa Mitra Ram Raut and animal lover Manthan Sarbhau of Wild Challenger Organisation, Ramtek.

They immediately rushed to the village and first removed the cobra from the den of hens. Disturbed by the happening, the snake vomited or expelled all the nine chicks one by one. The snake was later put in a big bottle and taken to Ramtek Forest Office. Later, the cobra was released in a forest in the presence of Round Officer Agode, Beat Guard Karamore, Wild Challenger Organisation’s President Rahul Kothekar and Ajay Mehurkule. The villagers heaved a sigh of relief following capture and release of cobra in far away jungle.

Cruelty to animals: NCP leader Gajbhiye faces flak over huge Bappa idol pulled by bullocks

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: As the 10-day Ganeshotsav commenced from September 2, various Sarvajanik Mandals installed attractive and huge idols of Bappa. The tallest idol of Lord Ganesh was installed by NCP MLC Prakash Gajbhiye’s Ekta Ganesh Utsav Mandal at Ambazari Hilltop. The massive idol was taken to the pandal from Chitar Oli in a colourful procession on Monday, September 2. However, carrying of the huge idol on a cart pulled by bullocks has apparently put the NCP leader in sort of trouble. An animal lover has raised the issue of cruelty to animals and has demanded action against Gajbhiye under provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Draught and Pack Animals Rules, 1965.

The animal lover of city, Ankita Shah, in a statement issued to Nagpur Today, expressed her shock over the ‘cruel treatment’ being given to poor bullocks. Shah says, “On September 2, I witnessed a procession being taken out by NCP MLC Prakash Gajbhiye wherein the huge Ganesh idol on a bullock-cart being pulled up by bullocks from Chitar Oli to Ambazari Hilltop, which is approximately 8.2 kms and have several hilly and mountainous roads on its way.

As there were several police personnel in bandobast of this rally, I talked to one of them and pleaded to remove bullocks from the cart and and use any other four wheeler to pull the idol, but he was helpless as the rally was of an influential personality. I was constrained to call Commissioner of Police for help, who forwarded my complaint to DCP of that zone Vinita Sahu. I got a call from her and she ensured that she will take action.

She contacted API Wakade who was accompanying that rally. I received a call from him and he informed me that he had a word with the owner of the bullock-cart and he says that his bullocks can carry such weight. If you still have complaint, you go to police station and register a complaint. I have preserved the phone call recording of the API,” Ankita stated.

Shah further said that what was disturbing that the owner did not even provide water the bullocks. The bullocks were being treated cruelly. The idol was so huge that it took about 4-5 hours for them to reach the spot and the bullocks were not even been disengaged on regular intervals. It was a pathetic view.

She has sought action in this regard under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Draught and Pack Animals Rules, 1965 as rules were conveniently flouted in this rally and even the police were mute spectators to it.

The animal lover has urged Animal Welfare Board of India to immediately take the cognizance of the matter and take necessary actions even against the police staff who were present at the rally. Use of animals in all the rallies should be banned, Shah demanded.

Please see the following links which MLC Prakash Gajbhiye himself has shared on his Facebook account where one can see the size of an idol and how cruelly the bullocks are forced to carry it.

When Nagpur Today contacted Prakash Gajbhiye for his comment on the matter, he refused say anything on the issue.
