Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: In some good news ahead of Diwali for hundreds of teachers, the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court on Thursday directed the government to release the pending 50% arrears and start regular salaries for 148 VJ/NT Ashramshalas across the state.

In 2008, the state had issued a government resolution to approve Std XI and XII at these ashramshalas. The GR stated that junior colleges for the backward community would be eligible for grant-in-aid from the fifth year onwards. The colleges were supposed to get 25% grant approval in fifth year, 50% in sixth year, 75% in seventh year and 100% in eighth year, as per the GR.

However, government stopped the salaries of teachers and officials after a couple of months from 2013 onwards. It said that the ashramshalas didn’t have approval from the finance department, and only released funds for nutritional meals of students. The aggrieved teachers and officials from Vidarbha moved the HC in 2015.

An interim order was passed to release 50% arrears of salaries in April 2016. On Thursday, during the final hearing, the HC asked the government to inspect the colleges and release the remaining 50% arrears and start regular pay by March 31, 2019. The HC also said that the petitioners were free to move the court again if the government refused to release the pay, and disposed of the case.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Taking serious view of abysmal recovery of taxes, the Chairman of Tax Assessment and Collection Committee Sandeep Jadhav came down heavily on negligent officials and employees and ordered stern action against them. “Suspend the irresponsible employees if tax recovery target is not achieved,” Jadhav directed NMC administration.

A meeting of Tax Assessment and Collection Committee was held on Friday at Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Hall in NMC Headquarters. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chairman Sunil Agrawal, members Yashashri Nandanwar, Madhuri Thakre, Bhavna Lonare, Dhantoli Zone Chairperson Vishakha Bante, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Mohite, Assistant Commissioner (Tax) Milind Meshram, all Assistant Commissioners of 10 zones, and other officials.

Jadhav expressed his disappointment for not achieving the three-monthly recovery target by Tax Inspectors of zones. Sensing the angry mood of Jadhav, the Assistant Commissioners assured him of achieving the recovery target by October 31. When Jadhav asked the Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Mohite whether the action will be taken if the target is not achieved by October 31, Mohite assured him that irresponsible and negligent officials and employees will face suspension action if the target is not achieved by October 31. Jadhav asked Mohite to give deadline of seven days to employees to improve their working style. If they failed to correct the wrong, then suspension action should be initiated against them and a report in this regard submitted, Jadhav said.

In the 2018-19 Budget, revenue of Rs 519 crore through tax collection was expected. But even half of the target was not achieved. NMC administration will take serious view of this lapse, Jadhav said. The NMC administration will be recommended to provide adequate manpower in the zones in which manpower is lacking, Jadhav said.

The Property Tax Department has miserably failed in collection of arrears from the defaulters. The arrears have touched staggering Rs 320 crore while the civic body has recovered only Rs 11 crore so far. After abolition of Octroi and Local Body Tax (LBT), Property Tax is the prominent revenue source of the NMC.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Students of Agriculture College in city hit streets in protest against PDKV proposal to sells its prime land to NMC and other government departments. The students under the banner of Agrovet-Agro Engineer Mitra Parivar also strongly opposed the proposal of Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) to transfer part its land along VIP Road to NMC. The civic body plans to construct a jogging and cycling track on the land.

The Agrovet-Agro Engineer Mitra Parivar has launched a campaign to oppose sell of open land by PDKV. Accordingly, the organisation and large number of students of Agriculture College staged ‘chakka jam’ (road blockade) at Maharajbagh Square. The agitation hit traffic for some time. The protest was led by organisation’s President Dilip Mohitkar, Secretary Pranay Parate and Congress Corporator Kishore Jichkar. At the outset, the protesters gathered in front of statue of Panjabrao Deshmukh situated at Maharajbagh and raised slogans against the ruling party for its plan to grab PDKV land. The students and leaders also opposed proposal of PDKV to transfer part its agriculture land along VIP Road in Ramdaspeth near Vanamati.

The NMC is planning to construct a jogging and cycling track on the land. The protesters demanded that the PDKV land at nearby Kachipura should be freed of encroachments and the jogging and cycling track should be constructed there.

It may be recalled the Akola-based Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) runs several institutes including Agriculture College in Nagpur. The PDKV-run Agriculture College has total 446.21 hectare land including Maharajbagh. Out of this land, 59.39 hectare land was already given to some government and semi-government institutes. Moreover, a huge land besides More Bhavan Bus Stand was transferred to NMC for construction for road construction. Apart from this, a 26.69 hectare land belonging to Agriculture College at Bajaj Nagar, Shankar Nagar, Ramdaspeth has been occupied by encroachers. It means the Agriculture College has already ‘lost’ 86 hectare land. Now, only 360.13 hectare land has remained with the college. Currently, some offices of Metro Rail and MSEDCL are also situated on the agriculture department land. The land of Agriculture College is shrinking day by day. Hence the students of Agriculture College united and staged agitation to save the land.

The protest was participated by a large number of doctors of Veterinary College and Hospital apart from students.

Uddhav’s flip-flop over tie-up with BJP puts MPs from Vidarbha in dilemma

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The flip-flops by the Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray over alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party in the next Lok Sabha and Assembly election has put the party MPs from Vidarbha in dilemma. Uddhav had in the past announced to go solo and fight the elections on their own strength. However, in a party meeting held last week in Mumbai, the MPs from Vidarbha opposed the Sena supremo’s move and stressed for alliance with BJP, sources said.

It a well known fact that Shiv Sena has no base in Vidarbha except in few pockets. The focus of Shiv Sena President is limited to Mumbai and its surrounding regions. The party is partner in BJP Government in State and at Centre. However, after coming to power, BJP systematically sidelined the interest of Shiv Sena. The Sena claims that the BJP has poorly treated it since then. This led to both parties contesting the 2014 State Assembly polls separately. Later, Shiv Sena supported the BJP Government and became partner. Now, the differences are on the issue of forming an alliance with the BJP for the 2019 general elections and Maharashtra Assembly polls. However, there are a few key party members including Vidarbha MPs who are keen on an alliance with the BJP.

If Shiv Sena fights the elections solo, the party will have to find ‘winning’ candidate in Nagpur, Gondia-Bhandara, Wardha Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Akola. Base of Shiv Sena at these place is ‘Zero.’ Hence a section of senior Shiv Sena leaders point out that it will be prudent to ally with the BJP, considering their party’s strengths and weaknesses.

It may be recalled that there are 10 Lok Sabha seats in Vidarbha. With BJP alliance, the party got four seats as its share. Shiv Sena contested Washim, Ramtek, Amravati and Buldana seats and all its candidates emerged winners in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. BJP contribution in Shiv Sena’s win was significant. However, the picture in Assembly elections was different. As both parties fought the polls separately, Shiv Sena could win only four seats as against 44 seats by BJP. Had there been alliance with BJP, Shiv Sena could have won at least 12 seats.

Keeping in mind the facts, the MPs from Vidarbha expressed apprehensions that if Shiv Sena fights the next Lok Sabha elections on its own, the party would fare badly in Vidarbha.

Protruding pipe in middle of road near GMCH invites mishaps!

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Despite newspapers using reams and reams of paper to write about poor condition of road across the city, the babus of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) refuse to wake up from their slumber. Take any route in city and within minutes the road users curse the civic body in choicest words.

A stretch of road near Medical Square is classic example of apathetic attitude of NMC bosses. Or are they not worried if a mishap takes place as the victim would get ‘prompt medical attention’ GMCH being in close proximity?

At the stretch of road in front of Laxmi General Stores near GMCH, the NMC authorities did not think it wise to repair a wide pothole after laying of underground electric transmission line. One can easily find bad shape of road along with pavement which has been polarized into cement and tar region due to underground transmission works. The road users would find a portion of underground hollow pipe protruding menacingly right in the middle of the road. The spot has reportedly led to several mishaps in the past.

While interacting with Nagpur Today, a local Ankit Yelekar said that done with the underground work the workers ignored the open wire in the middle of the road. In the dark, commuters find it difficult to spot that pipe and become victims of a serious mishap.

“Right from the start, we used to object in every uncertainty about this underground work. But like always the workers turned a blind eye towards our suggestions. The hollow electric pipe has caused several accidents on this road even in broad day light. The pipe is black in colour, so somehow it manages to hide in the night time. The spot being right next to divider, the commuters while turning often meet with mishaps with the one who is travelling on the straight road.”

Yelekar further added, “We have brought this matter to attention of NMC administration. But it seems, the administration must have been waiting for fatal mishap to occur and then react.

If there’s ‘#HeToo’ movement, I will support it, says Bruna Abdullah

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: So who doesn’t know Brazilian Model turned Actor Bruna Abdullah? This sizzling hot B-town actress and sensuous item girl shot to fame as Mary of ‘Rose Mary Marlo’ – the jargon from movie Grand Masti that became instant rage among her fans. Nonetheless, she has beautifully nailed her ‘hot babe’ persona with her sexy swag while she danced to many seductive Bollywood numbers in the last few years. But this damsel is not just about playing pretty and sexy roles… she has dared and conquered in action drama like Khatron ke Khiladi too.

Bruna turned on the heat in Nagpur as she recenly hit city’s one of the most ravishing garba venues – Jalsa 2018 to celebrate Navratri with her fans and ofcourse, try some dandiya moves.

On the sidelines of this event Nagpur Today caught up with her for a quick interview in which she talked about her rendezvous with garba and also came out with her side of story in the wake of ongoing #MeToo movement.

So it came as no surprise to hear from her that she too has been the target of unwelcome advances / sexual assault stories that are tumbling out daily now in the snowballing ‘Me Too’ movement of naming and shaming big names of show business, cricket, and politics. Even Journalism.

“I think all women have been subjected to sexual harrasment as some point or the other, but should learn to say no,” says Bruna.

When asked to name some Mr. Big of Bollywood who had harassed her she refused to divulge details.

“I have handled the situation then and there without waiting to speak up at about it on later date. I did not mind even if I lost out on some lucrative roles or big money. My dignity is more important for me! I am not one to remain silent and suffer in silence! I am a strong woman and I have put my foot down and said a firm NO immediately!!”

Having said that, Bruna does acknowledge that such cases have happened and go on happening in Bollywood. Even today.

She says categorically that she does not want to ruffle feathers but is candid enough to disclose that not just women, young guys, Bollywood aspirants too face the ‘casting couch’ and other forms of exploitation.

When Farhan of Nagpur Today asked if she would support a “HeToo” movement by exploited men, she laughed and said ” definitely! 100 per cent!!”

On a serious note she concluded ” anyone who is perceived as being weak will always be exploited – in every field. The secret lies in being strong enough to put your foot down and fight back immediately.”

Well, for now Bruna said she was super excited to indulge in some garba moves in Nagpur without hurting her fingers from dandiya sticks.
Here’s wishing best to Bruna for her garba antics.
