Nagpur court rejects Nana Patole’s civil suit against DGP Rashmi Shukla

Nagpur: Senior civil judge Anand S Munde in Nagpur on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by former MPCC President Nana Patole seeking Rs 500 crore damages from IPS officer and incumbent Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Rashmi Shukla.

Shukla, former Pune Police Commissioner, was accused of tapping phones of opposition politicians. After the change of government in 2019, the case had gained considerable attention. Patole had claimed his image was maligned by contents of an FIR pertaining to the alleged phone tapping case against Shukla registered in Pune in Feb 2022. Seeking dismissal of the suit, Shukla contended that the imputations in the said report were not against the plaintiff (Patole). The court observed that the suit was based solely on the contents of an FIR, which cannot be considered publication of a defamatory statement. The FIR was later quashed by the Bombay High Court.

The case, registered as Spl. Civil Suit No. 323/2022 (Nana Patole Vs. Rashmi Shukla & others), based on a First Information Report (FIR) lodged at Bund Garden Police Station in Pune on February 25, 2022. Patole argued that the contents of the FIR defamed him and harmed his political and public image. On that basis, he approached the court seeking monetary compensation.

However, DGP Shukla, represented by her counsel Sr Adv Devendra Chauhan and Adv Nishchay Jadhav, filed an application under Order VII Rule 11 of the Code of Civil Procedure and requested rejection of the plaint. She argued that there was no cause of action against her, as the FIR was not registered by her against Patole. In fact, the FIR was filed by another person, Vaishali Laxman Chandgude, against Rashmi Shukla herself.

Importantly, Patole was not named as an accused in that FIR. The defense also highlighted that the Bombay High Court had already quashed the FIR. Copies of the High Court orders in Criminal Writ Petition No. 680/2022 and Criminal Writ Petition No. 731/2022 were presented to the trial court which shows that the case had no legal foundation.

The defense also highlighted that the Bombay High Court had already quashed the FIR. Copies of the High Court orders in Criminal Writ Petition No. 680/2022 and Criminal Writ Petition No. 731/2022 were presented to the trial court which shows that the case had no legal foundation.

During the hearing, the court carefully considered the submissions made by both sides. It referred to past judgments of the Supreme Court and various High Courts which held that merely lodging an FIR or complaint with lawful authorities cannot be treated as a public act of defamation. The court observed that unless a competent court declares such a complaint false, no cause of action arises for filing a defamation suit.

The judge also noted that the plaint filed by Patole did not mention the statutory notice required under Section 80 of the Code of Civil Procedure and Section 161 of the Maharashtra Police Act before suing a public officer for actions performed in her official capacity. The absence of such notice made the suit further defective.

In his order, Judge Anand S Munde, the 10th Joint Civil Judge (Senior Division), Nagpur, stated that the plaint was unsustainable because it was based only on the contents of an FIR which neither named nor accused Patole. He stressed that a defamation case requires some form of “publication” of the alleged defamatory material and a private FIR does not amount to such publication.

The court concluded that the complaint did not disclose any real cause of action and therefore deserved to be rejected. Accordingly, the trial court allowed the defendant’s application, rejected the complaint and dismissed the case.

Sr Counsel Devendra Chauhan, Adv Nishchay Jadhav represented Shukla while Adv Amol Patne and Adv Porus Kotwal for petitioner Patole.

Nagpur: Police bust Jaripatka ATM heist, nab UP gangster with 25 past crimes

Nagpur: In a dramatic breakthrough, Jaripatka police have arrested a 55-year-old gangster from Uttar Pradesh, identified as Khurshid Ahmed Nisar Ahmed, in connection with a daring ATM theft at Patankar Chowk in Nagpur. Khurshid, a repeat offender with over 25 cases of ATM break-ins in Mumbai and Thane, was nabbed after cops scanned more than 350 CCTV cameras to crack the case.

The incident occurred on September 4 at 2.26 am, when miscreants looted Rs 8.12 lakh from a State Bank of India ATM kiosk that had reopened just two days earlier. The gang, armed with gas cutters, broke into the machine, blackened internal CCTV cameras, and fled in a silver car with fake number plates purchased through OLX. However, a broken number plate and a FasTag trail betrayed their movements.

Police later recovered Rs 17,400 from Khurshid’s hideout in Nizamuddin Colony near Shivam Dudh Dairy. Four other accomplices, reportedly family members, are still absconding. External CCTV footage showed three masked men committing the crime.

Zonal DCP Niketan Kadam said Khurshid had even purchased a property in Yashodhara Nagar to operate from before striking. The probe team, led by ACP Satyawan Bandiwar and Senior Inspector Arun Kshirsagar, also included Sub-Inspectors Ashish Morkhede and Maroti Jangilwad, who relied on call records and technical evidence to zero in on the accused.

Khurshid has confessed to his role during custodial interrogation, which has been extended until September 14. Police teams have now been dispatched to Uttar Pradesh in search of his accomplices, with DCP Kadam indicating that MCOCA may be slapped against the gang.

Panel shortlists 28 candidates for appointment of RTMNU V-C

Nagpur: The search panel appointed for selection of new Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has shortlisted around 28 candidates from among 78 applicants.

According to sources, as per the advertisement published in July, around 78 candidates had applied for the post. Roughly 10 percent of the total applicants were found ineligible on various counts. As per the Public University Act, 2016 of Maharashtra, the panel has to select 40 percent candidates of the total eligible ones. Accordingly, around 28 candidates have been shortlisted, said the sources. Of the 28 candidates selected, half are from Nagpur region. They included some professors of RTMNU departments, some from affiliated colleges and some present and past deans. It is less likely that a sitting Vice-Chancellor of some other university would apply as he/she can’t be appointed until their respective terms are completed.

As per the rule, the university concerned nominates a member through Academic Council and Management Council. RTMNU has completed this process and nominated Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur Avinash Kumar Agrawal long ago. A person of the level of Principal Secretary is the Member Secretary. The University Grants Commission provided one member while the Chancellor appointed the Chairman of the Committee. The shortlisted 28 candidates are likely to be called for interview either by mid-September or in the last week.

Five names will be finalised which will then be sent to the Chancellor of Universities of Maharashtra. RTMNU may get a new Vice Chancellor before Diwali, provided the new Governor of State is appointed early as present Governor C P Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice-President of India. Acting Divisional Commissioner Dr Madhavi Khode-Chaware is handling the charge of Vice-Chancellor for now.

Shady property deals: IT team surveys 3 more Sub-Registrar Offices in Nagpur, Wardha

Nagpur: The Income Tax Department’s Intelligence and Criminal Investigation (I&CI) Wing has intensified its crackdown on shady property transactions, carrying out surveys at three more Sub-Registrar Offices (SROs) in Nagpur and Wardha districts on Wednesday. The offices at Wardha-1, Wardha-2, and Arvi were targeted as part of the ongoing investigation that began in July.

Sources revealed that large-scale suppression of high-value property transactions has surfaced, with crores worth of deals going unreported to the IT Department. These transactions, which should have been mandatorily disclosed under the Statement of Financial Transactions (SFT) framework, were instead kept off the radar.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had ordered a review of all 21 SROs in Nagpur and adjoining rural areas after the Hingna SRO survey exposed glaring irregularities. Since then, surveys have been conducted at several SROs, including Sadar, Mahal, and Mhalgi Nagar in Nagpur city, as well as in Amravati and Malkapur (Buldhana).

“The Hingna case revealed a modus operandi where SROs deliberately suppressed high-value transaction data. This has become a template for deeper scrutiny not just in Nagpur, but nationwide in the coming months,” an official confirmed.

Under existing rules, property transactions above ₹30 lakh must be reported annually through Form 61A (Part D) by May 31. While Maharashtra’s iSarita portal records every registered property deal, officials discovered that SROs manually filtered entries before uploading them to the IT Department’s SFT portal. As a result, numerous high-value deals were deliberately excluded from official reporting.

The discrepancy was detected when the I&CI Wing physically audited records, comparing raw iSarita data with SFT submissions. This cross-verification exposed intentional omissions rather than technical glitches.

Insiders suggest the possibility of collusion, with third-party data entry operators also coming under the scanner. The findings indicate that the manipulation allowed buyers and sellers to dodge tax scrutiny, with transactions slipping past the IT Department’s automated PAN-linked monitoring system.

With evidence mounting, the scope of the probe has now widened, and officials hinted that strict action could follow against erring registrars and their associates.

What is a Gold Loan, and How is Your Gold Valued for It?

Whether it’s a financial emergency or you want to achieve a personal milestone, you likely look for a secure and quick option for raising money. Among the several forms of secured loans available in the market, a Gold Loan stands out for its quick processing and low eligibility requirements. It is essential to understand what a Gold Loan is and how loan providers value your pledged gold.

Understanding Gold Loan

A Gold Loan is a secured loan where you borrow money from a lending institution against the value of gold ornaments or coins you own. The gold serves as collateral, significantly reducing the institution’s risk. As a result, the interest rates tend to be lower than those on unsecured loans.

When you borrow from a reputable loan company, a Gold Loan is quick to obtain with minimal documentation*. The process follows standardised loan agreements and requires completion of KYC formalities along with the provision of a Key Facts Statement (KFS) as required by the RBI. This ensures transparency and compliance while making the borrowing experience smooth and reliable. As a borrower, you remain the owner of the gold throughout the tenure, provided you repay the loan on time. After the full repayment, the lending institution returns your gold in its original form. However, if you fail to repay, they can rightfully sell your gold to cover their loss. The primary reason for the increasing popularity of this form of lending is that it allows you to unlock the liquidity of your gold without having to sell it.

How is Gold Valued in a Gold Loan?

Gold valuation is a crucial part of the loan process. The lending institution determines your loan eligibility based on this key factor. The following steps break down the valuation process:

1.      Purity Check

When you bring in your gold, the first thing the lending institution checks is its purity. Gold purity is typically measured in carats, with 24K being the purest form of gold. However, jewellery is usually made of 22K or lower, because makers add alloys to it to give it structure and strength.

For valuation purposes, most lending institutions consider 18-22 karat gold as the standard. If the ornament contains stones or any non-gold elements, their weight is excluded from the total. The institution will test the gold using a carat meter to confirm its purity.

Borrowers have the right to be present during the assaying process and are entitled to receive a detailed assay certificate. This ensures complete transparency and confidence in the valuation of their gold assets.

2.      Weight Measurement

Lending institutions only consider the net gold for gold valuation. So, they carefully separate any stones or embellishments in the final calculation. The more pure gold is present, the higher the loan value you may obtain. Please note that different lending institutions may have varying standards and equipment for measuring gold weight and purity. Reputed financial institutions maintain transparency in this process to avoid disputes.

3.      Current Market Rate Reference

After evaluating the gold’s purity and weight, the lending institution refers to the current gold market rates sourced from recognised authorities such as the Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) or SEBI-approved exchanges. Most institutions use the lower value between the average price over the last 30 days and the previous day’s rate to ensure an accurate and fair valuation. The gold price is typically based on 22-carat gold, which is crucial in determining the collateral value for the loan.

4.      Loan-to-Value (LTV) Ratio

After determining the gold’s market value, the lender applies a Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio in accordance with regulatory guidelines. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mandates tiered LTV limits based on the borrower’s total exposure across all loans against gold: up to 85% LTV is allowed if the borrower’s total exposure is up to Rs 2.5 Lakh, up to 80% LTV if the total exposure is above Rs 2.5 Lakh and up to Rs 5 Lakh, and up to 75% LTV if total exposure is above Rs 5 Lakh. For example, if your gold is valued at Rs 1 Lakh, the maximum loan amount you may borrow could be up to Rs 85,000. This tiered approach ensures adequate safety buffers against market volatility while allowing borrowers to access fair loan amounts. Compliance with these RBI guidelines is strictly maintained by lending institutions.

Factors Influencing Gold Valuation

Several factors influence the final gold valuation, which ultimately affects the loan amount sanctioned. These include the following:

  1. Type of Gold: Jewellery made with mixed metals or studded with stones may have a lower value due to its lower gold content. On the other hand, plain, high-carat gold items are valued higher.
  2. Gold Purity Certification: If your gold has a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) hallmark, it can lead to higher and faster valuation with greater transparency. This is especially helpful when the ornament’s composition is doubtful.
  3. Gold Price in the Market: Gold is a globally traded commodity. Any changes in international prices or fluctuations in the rupee-dollar exchange rate directly impact the gold price in India. Hence, the gold valuation process involves daily rate adjustments to align with the latest trends.

Tips to Maximise Your Gold Value When Borrowing a Gold Loan

Here are some practical tips to maximise your gold value when borrowing a Gold Loan:

  1. Choose High-Purity Gold: Lending institutions offer higher loan amounts for gold with higher purity. For instance, 22K gold fetches a better value than 18K. Avoid mixing stones or gems with your jewellery, as the institution will only consider the gold content for valuation.
  2. Compare Multiple Lenders: Each lending institution has its preferred gold valuation method and loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. By comparing different loan plans, you may find one offering a higher LTV or better terms for the same loan.
  3. Understand the Loan-to-Value Ratio: The LTV ratio determines how much of your gold’s market value is eligible as a loan. RBI allows a maximum LTV of 75%. However, some lending institutions may offer less based on your eligibility and repayment capacity. You should look for an institution that provides the highest LTV allowed.
  4. Negotiate Charges and Interest Rates: Even if the gold value is identical, variations in interest rates and processing fees can significantly impact your total loan cost. It is important to select lending institutions that provide full disclosure of all charges, including processing fees, and demonstrate fairness in their advertising. Choosing lending institutions with transparent practices, attractive interest rates, and minimal fees ensures you make an informed and cost-effective borrowing decision.
  5. Avoid Partially Damaged Jewellery: Broken clasps or worn-out items can reduce the perceived value of your jewellery. Ensure your ornaments are intact and in wearable condition before pledging.
  6. Borrow Only What You Need: Even if your gold qualifies for a higher loan amount, take only what is necessary. This reduces your interest burden and makes repayment easier.

Conclusion

Apart from understanding what is Gold Loan and the intricacies of gold valuation, it’s equally important to choose a lending institution that brings trust and transparency to the process. Many institutions offer quick and easy disbursal*, transparent charges*, competitive interest rates*, and high safety of gold*. Whether you are in a financial crunch or planning a big event, a Gold Loan from a reputable lending institution can provide the financial cushion you need.

Note: In compliance with RBI guidelines effective from April 1, 2026, all Gold Loans will adhere to updated regulatory norms. Loans issued before this date will continue under the previous regulations.

*Terms and Conditions apply. Loan terms, fees, and borrower rights vary by lending institution and product. Borrowers should review all terms and conditions carefully before applying and consult authorised representatives for personalised guidance. Transparency and regulatory compliance are ensured by lending institutions.

Nagpur: A shocking incident was reported in the Ganeshpeth police station area, where an 18-year-old youth abducted a 15-year-old minor girl at sword-point in the middle of the night. Thanks to the swift action and alertness of Nagpur Police, the accused was arrested, and the girl was safely rescued.

The accused has been identified as Amit Manoj Sontakke, who was previously acquainted with the victim. Police said a dispute had occurred between them some time ago, after which the girl had lodged a complaint against him at Pratap Nagar police station. Angered by this, Amit allegedly decided to take revenge.

On the night of September 10 around 2 a.m., Amit reportedly arrived at the girl’s home armed with a sword. When the victim’s 64-year-old grandmother opened the door, the accused threatened her with the weapon and forcibly entered the house. He then woke the sleeping minor, insisting she marry him.

When the girl resisted, the accused allegedly pressed her neck and held the sword to her throat, threatening to kill her. He then forcibly took her away. Following a complaint lodged by the grandmother, Ganeshpeth police swiftly registered a case and launched a search.

Amit Sontakke was soon tracked down and arrested. Charges have been filed under sections of kidnapping, house trespass, criminal intimidation, outraging modesty, and provisions of the POCSO Act. Police confirmed that the girl was rescued unharmed, and further investigation is underway.

Nagpur: A flyover through the living room! A ‘wonder’ in its own style!!

$

Nagpur: This could easily be called a wonder in its own style, but not the kind that brings pride. In the name of development, Nagpur has been racing ahead with new infrastructure projects, but at Untkhana Ashok Chowk, development seems to have taken a bizarre turn.

Here, a flyover is being constructed right through a residential house, with one shocking image showing a massive concrete span cutting across a two-storey home. Residents are stunned, asking how such planning was even approved.

Locals warn that this “development disaster” is more of a ticking time bomb than a progress marker. “If an accident happens, who will take responsibility?” is the pressing question reverberating through the neighbourhood. The flyover pillars and slabs stand dangerously close to homes, leaving barely any breathing space for families who live there.

While Nagpur is touted as one of the fastest-growing cities, this incident highlights glaring lapses in urban planning. Experts say such projects not only violate safety norms but also strip citizens of their basic right to secure housing. Yet, for now, the authorities appear unmoved, even as residents continue to live under the shadow of risk, quite literally.

Godrej Properties Loses Arbitration Battle in Anandam World City Case, to Pay ₹244 Crore with 12% Interest

Nagpur: Real estate giant Godrej Properties Limited has suffered a major legal blow after an arbitration tribunal, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra, dismissed the company’s massive counter-claim of ₹1,051.52 crore and instead directed it to pay ₹244 crore in compensation to Goldbricks Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., along with 12% annual interest.

The verdict comes in connection with the long-disputed Anandam World City project in Nagpur, where both companies have been locked in a legal tussle for years.

Tribunal’s Findings

Between 2011 and 2015, Godrej Properties entered into multiple agreements with Goldbricks for the development, marketing, and infrastructure work of different residential zones and a villa project. However, the tribunal concluded that Godrej had committed “serious breaches” of every agreement, noting:

  • Failure to sell flats despite collecting fees from customers.
  • Abandonment of the villa project mid-way.
  • Failure to provide even basic infrastructure.
  • Complete withdrawal from the Residential Zone-2 project.

The tribunal described these actions as “collective abandonment of responsibilities” and “grave breach of contractual dealings.”

Claims and Counterclaims

  • Goldbricks Infrastructure initially demanded damages worth ₹1,366 crore.
  • Godrej Properties countered with a claim of ₹1,051.52 crore, which the tribunal dismissed as “grossly exaggerated and unsubstantiated.”
  • After evaluating both sides, the tribunal ruled in Goldbricks’ favour, awarding them ₹244 crore plus interest.

Legal Experts’ Reactions

Industry observers believe this ruling sends a strong message to real estate developers.

“The hefty compensation and high interest rate underline that accountability cannot be compromised. This is a clear signal that companies must honour commitments made to partners and customers,” said a senior arbitration lawyer.

Analysts add that while the financial impact may not cripple Godrej Properties, the reputational damage could be significant.

What’s Next for Godrej Properties?

Legal experts suggest the company may seek to challenge the order under Section 34 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. However, the chances of overturning such awards are considered slim. Any delay in payment will also increase the liability due to the 12% annual interest clause.

Wider Impact on Real Estate Industry

The case highlights the growing role of arbitration in resolving disputes within India’s real estate sector. With complex joint ventures and unfinished projects often ending in litigation, this ruling is expected to be seen as a “bellwether case” for developer-partner relations.

For this arbitration, Goldbricks Infrastructure was represented by Advocate Shyam Devani (Devani Associates), while Godrej Properties was represented by Agarwal Law Associates, Delhi.

Five students hurt in school van-bus collision on Nagpur’s Mankapur Flyover

Nagpur: At least five schoolchildren were injured on Friday morning when a van carrying students of Bhavan’s Koradi Road Branch collided head-on with a school bus on the Mankapur Flyover in Nagpur. The accident occurred around the descending slope of the flyover, where traffic has been diverted into a single lane for months due to ongoing repair work.

Passersby immediately rushed to the spot, pulling children out of the mangled van and rushing them to a nearby hospital. Witnesses said only two of the injured students were conscious when rescued, while others lay unconscious inside the vehicle. One of the children later recalled hearing a loud crash before blacking out. Parents of some students also reached the site within minutes of the accident.

The van driver suffered severe head and abdominal injuries after the steering wheel struck him during the collision. He, too, has been admitted to hospital. Doctors confirmed that several of the injured students are in critical condition but added that no fatalities have been reported so far.

The bus, belonging to Narayana Vidyalam, Bokhara, was en route to pick up students from the city. Its driver and two female attendants escaped unhurt. The bus driver blamed the van driver for speeding and veering into the opposite lane, leading to the crash.

Traffic on the flyover remained disrupted for nearly an hour after the accident, with commuters complaining that no traffic police were present initially to manage the situation. The accident has once again highlighted the risks posed by the prolonged closure of one side of the flyover between Mankapur Stadium and Faras. The damaged stretch has been under repairs for months, forcing vehicles from both directions to move in a constricted space.

Local residents and commuters have repeatedly criticized the slow pace of repair work, warning that the traffic bottleneck was a recipe for accidents. Friday’s crash has intensified calls for authorities to expedite the project and deploy traffic personnel to prevent further mishaps.

India’s Rising Stature Scares Some, Says Mohan Bhagwat

Nagpur: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday took a veiled swipe at former US President Donald Trump over imposing a 50% tariff on India, suggesting that India’s growing stature in the world has unsettled some nations.

Speaking at a Brahma Kumaris event in Nagpur, Bhagwat remarked:
“People are afraid of India’s rising reputation globally. They think—if India becomes big, what will happen to us? That is why they impose tariffs to suppress India.”

“The World is Trapped in Ego”

Bhagwat emphasized that fear and conflict stem from the illusion of ‘I’ and ‘mine’.
“We did nothing wrong. I only blame those who did. If they remain with us, they feel they can pressurize India. You are across the ocean, we are here, there’s no direct relation—yet there is fear. This fear arises from ego. Once we move from ‘I, mine’ to ‘we, ours,’ problems end.”

He added that the world seeks solutions but fails to find them due to narrow, self-centered perspectives.
“Conflicts arise because people only think about what they want, without considering others. This incomplete vision is the root of global unrest.”

A Lesson from a Snake Story

To illustrate his point, Bhagwat shared a Buddhist parable:
“Once, on a path where a poisonous snake lived, Tathagat (Buddha) walked by. Seeing him, the snake bowed at his feet and moved away. The lesson is that not all snakes are venomous—and even poisonous ones attack only when provoked or intruded upon. If you keep distance, they won’t harm you.”

“India Wants to Grow to Relieve the World”

Highlighting India’s philosophy, Bhagwat said:
“India aspires to become a great nation not by exploiting others, but by offering relief and solutions to the world. Other nations may seek to rise by conquering, looting, or suppressing others. But India wishes to grow so that it can help humanity at large.”

He concluded that India’s rise is not just about power, but about responsibility—bringing peace, relief, and solutions to the global community.

Maha Govt defends Ladki Bahin Yojana in HC, denies financial strain on State

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Government has strongly defended its flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, dismissing allegations that the scheme is causing financial losses to the State exchequer.

The affidavit, filed by the State recently, came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Nagpur-based social activist Anil Wadpalliwar. In his petition, Wadpalliwar argued that cash-transfer schemes such as the Ladki Bahin Yojana were financially unsustainable and harming the State’s economy. He urged the court to strike down such schemes, including other programmes offering direct cash benefits to beneficiaries.

However, the State Government asserted in its reply that the fiscal deficit is well within limits, and that the Ladki Bahin Yojana has not negatively impacted the State’s financial health. Citing official data, the government said that Maharashtra’s fiscal deficit for 2024–25 stands at 2.69%, below the prescribed 3% ceiling under the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act. The affidavit added that Maharashtra ranks among the top three states in the country for maintaining deficit levels below the 3% benchmark.

The government further claimed that Wadpalliwar’s figures were misleading, urging the court not only to dismiss the petition but also to impose a penalty on the petitioner.

In his PIL, Wadpalliwar had highlighted that Maharashtra is burdened with debts exceeding Rs 8 lakh crore and warned that populist schemes could worsen the fiscal deficit. He cited the FRBM Act to stress that the deficit should always remain below 3%.

The government countered that the State’s financial position remains sound, with the Ladki Bahin Yojana aimed at empowering women and ensuring social welfare without breaching fiscal discipline.

The controversy had earlier spilled into the political arena, when during the Assembly election campaign, the then Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis accused Wadpalliwar of being close to Congress leaders and trying to derail a scheme meant for women’s welfare. The latest affidavit confirms that the State has no intention of rolling back the scheme, which it described as both fiscally viable and socially essential.

Ganesh Tekdi Temple set for major upgrade as NMC steps in to secure land lease

Nagpur: The historic Ganesh Tekdi Temple, one of Nagpur’s most visited religious landmarks, is poised for a major facelift after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) intervened to resolve a long-pending land lease issue with the Defence Department. The move clears the way for long-term development and better facilities for lakhs of devotees who visit the shrine every year.

The temple currently sits on 0.67 acres of land under a permanent lease granted in 1964. In addition, the Defence Department had allotted 0.45 acres (nearly 19,000 sq ft) in two parcels to the temple trust in 1996, but on a 30-year lease that expires on February 28, 2026. Renewal in favour of the private trust was prohibited under defence regulations, putting expansion plans on hold.

To break the deadlock, Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari initiated talks with Defence authorities, proposing that the land be leased to NMC instead. In principle, the Defence Department has agreed to lease the land to the civic body for 100 years at the market rate of Rs 66,870 per sq m. The total cost works out to Rs 12.4 crore, which will be borne by the temple’s Advisory Society. Once formalised, NMC will acquire the land and allow the trust to continue managing temple affairs.

“This arrangement ensures land security and enables us to take up long-term renovation and expansion,” said Ajay Pajare, Executive Engineer (Estate Department), NMC, confirming that the approval process is at its final stage and could be completed within two months.

With land ownership sorted, the civic body plans to undertake structural improvements and new amenities for devotees, addressing long-standing demands for better facilities at the hilltop temple.

In March 2024, the Maharashtra Government had already upgraded Ganesh Tekdi Temple’s status from Grade C to Grade A tourism site, recognising it as a national monument and making it eligible for Central Government funds. The fresh lease arrangement now strengthens prospects for transforming the temple into a major cultural and tourism hub in Vidarbha.

Profit Over Protection? Nagpur School Van–Bus Collision Puts Spotlight on Schools Failing Student Safety

$

Nagpur:  A tragic accident on Nagpur’s Mankapur flyover today has once again raised serious concerns about student transport safety and accountability of schools as well as parents.

In the morning, a school van from Bhavan’s Koradi Road branch collided head-on with a school bus belonging to Narayana Vidyalayam. The crash occurred on the descending slope of the flyover, where traffic is already restricted due to ongoing repair work.

The collision left five students injured, with one girl critical and admitted to the ICU. The van driver, identified as Hrithik Kanojia (24), succumbed to severe head and abdominal injuries at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMC). Traffic remained disrupted for nearly an hour following the incident.

The Bigger Question: Who is Responsible?

This heartbreaking incident has reignited debate over who should be held responsible when children’s lives are put at risk during daily commutes.

  • Schools without proper transport systems
Many schools in Nagpur and across India still do not operate their own dedicated school buses. Instead, they allow private vans to ferry children. Unlike standard school buses, these vans often lack mandatory safety features such as speed governors, GPS tracking, and trained drivers under school supervision. While schools charge hefty fees, questions arise: Why do some institutions not invest in student transportation infrastructure?
  • Parents opting out of school buses
On the other side, many parents knowingly choose private vans or pooled vehicles to save on costs or for convenience. However, these vehicles are often driven recklessly, overloaded, and without proper monitoring. Parents too must ask themselves: Is saving a little time or money worth risking a child’s life?
  • The need for regulation and accountability
School buses are required to follow strict safety norms, including CCTV, GPS systems, and designated speed controls, allowing both schools and parents to track real-time movement. Private vans rarely follow these protocols. Shouldn’t schools be made accountable if they outsource or allow unsafe alternatives? And shouldn’t parents be held equally responsible for bypassing safer options?

A Wake-Up Call for Nagpur

Today’s accident is not just a tragedy but also a warning bell. If schools continue to prioritize profits over safety and if parents continue to take risks with unregulated private transport, such incidents will repeat.

Lives of children are too precious to be compromised. Authorities must ensure strict enforcement of transport norms, schools must take ownership of student safety beyond classroom walls, and parents must choose responsibly.

This accident should serve as a turning point in how we look at student safety in daily commute. The questions must be asked, and accountability must be fixed – before more young lives are lost on Nagpur’s roads.
