List of Cancelled Trains on Pune-Nagpur-Pune route

Nagpur: After South East Central Railway (SECR) spoiled Durga holiday mood by cancellation of trains, now its turn of Central Railway to do the same. During Diwali festival period, the Railways have announced last minute cancellation of trains on Pune-Nagpur-Pune route, according to a report in a local daily.

This is one of the busiest routes and all the trains run jam packed throughout the year as many youth from region are either pursuing higher studies or working in IT and manufacturing sector in Pune region.

According to the report, a communiqué from Central Railway mentioned that a block is being taken between Kashti and Belwandi in Solapur Division for electronic inter-locking work that would disrupt the movement of long distance Mail/Express and passenger trains. All the trains ex-Nagpur are going to be affected for varying period and some of them just around the start of Diwali festival. Though there are some long distance trains to Pune but the station quote in same is quite less to cater to such huge demand

These trains originate from Eastern Railway and SECR Zones and run behind the schedule most of the times. It’s a well-known fact that large number students hailing from Nagpur and other parts of Vidarbha are studying in Pune head home for Diwali festival. Apart from them most of natives are working in Pune and for them also presence at home for Diwali has been a long drawn tradition in families. So most of them book tickets well in advance, on the opening day, which is about 120-days.

Now for all such travellers the Central Railway has dished out a very dry and cold dish by leaving them in lurch at last minute. Another fact is that the bus operators have already jacked up fares on Pune-Nagpur and Nagpur-Pune route and rates are being quoted around Rs 5,000. With CR’s block the ticket rates might zoom in four digits, fear the travellers. Moreover riding in the luxury buses is quite risky as operators in a bid to encash the festive mood maximise on speed and throw safety norms to wind while operating on Pune-Nagpur-Pune route during this season to pocket maximum profit.

According to Satish Yadav, Member, Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC), Central Railway, this is nothing but mental harassment being perpetrated upon hapless travellers on part of railways. How come railway officials remember block during the festival season and that too when it is all important for people to be at home as part of long honoured tradition. Secondly, Yadav said Railways as per extant policy will deduct clerical charges, Rs. 30 to 60, while refunding the fare to travellers in lieu of cancellation of trains. So in a way travellers are going to be hit by double whammy, not only deprived of festival at home with family members plus also bear financial loss while Railways mint money at expense of passengers.

List of Cancelled Trains:

Train No & Name Journey Dates
22124 Ajni Pune AC Exp Oct 11 18

With Diwali rush in trains rising, Railways plan crackdown on black marketing of tickets

Nagpur: If you have a confirmed ticket then the fun of travelling is something more enjoyable. Every passenger tries to get a confirmed ticket. With stranded travellers struggling with an overloaded booking portal, tech-savvy side-street agents and touts have been found to be hoarding seat reservations and selling them off at a premium. The ‘Vigilance Team’ of the Railways is paying special attention to the Nagpur Section to prevent the loot of needy passengers.

Due to the doubling of the number of passengers due to Diwali festival, the waiting list has got longer. Looking at the experience of every year, many people have already booked tickets in advance. So the ‘waiting list’ is already slowly increasing. Travelling a day before and two days after Diwali is a strenuous exercise. Most of the people stay away from home in connection with studies or work. Wherever they are, everyone goes to their respective homes to celebrate Diwali.

So these days the waiting list would increase. The Nagpur-Pune, Nagpur-Mumbai route is very busy. Trains are always full on this route. This route has the longest waiting list during Diwali. The agents and touts become active and indulge in black marketing of tickets taking advantage of this opportunity.

Railways has also planned to make everyone travel from the reserved berths. Special trains will also run. The waiting list is long and additional coaches will be arranged as and when required. This year special vigilance system of Railways is ready and attention is being paid to Nagpur Division of Central Railway. Apart from this, teams of RPF and Crime Branch are keeping an eye.

Special attention on waiting list:

The rush of travellers is increasing due to Diwali. The Railway is paying special attention to the waiting list. If the waiting list is long, additional coaches will be arranged by the order of the Headquarters. A special team of RPF is monitoring the black marketing of tickets, said Vijay Thul, Commercial Manager, Central Railway.

Padma Vibhushan Dr Raghunath Mashelkar honoured with Nagarjuna Award and Padma Bhushan S Nambi Narayanan with Acharya Bharadwaj Award, in a felicitation programme in Nagpur

Nagpur: Nagpurians on Sunday were blessed with the good fortune of hosting, and listening to, two of the pioneers in the field of Indian science and technology — Padma Vibhushan Dr Raghunath Mashelkar and Padma Bhushan S Nambi Narayanan.

Responding to their felicitation in a glittering ceremony, both the eminent Indian scientists and innovators pitched for ancient Indian science and technology getting due recognition at International level. They also discussed how Indian sages and seers pioneered ancient technologies far before the world did.

Hindu Research Foundation and Maitree Pariwar Sanstha launched the first International award to honour acclaimed scientists and scholars of India and the world. Dr Mashelkar and S Nambi Narayanan were honoured in the ceremony organised jointly by these two organisations at Kavi Kulguru Kalidas Sabhagruha, Persistent Systems, IT Park in Nagpur. Dr Mashelkar, former Director of National Chemical Laboratory and former Director General of CSIR, was honoured with ‘Nagarjuna Puraskar-2022’ at the hands of Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways.

S Nambi Narayanan, a former ISRO scientist who developed ‘VIKAS’ liquid engine and on whose life is based the movie ‘Rocketry’, was honoured with ‘Acharya Bhardwaj Puraskar-2022’ at the hands of Swami Vigyananand, Founder President, World Hindu Congress. The award comprised shawl, shreeful, memento, and Rs 1 lakh cash.

Addressing the gathering, both the eminent scientists of world repute shared in brief their stories of struggle and overcoming the odds, and also enlightened the audience about the rich tradition of science and technology in India.

“The Indian civilisation has a strong tradition of science and technology. Ancient India was a land of sages, scholars and scientists. Research has shown that from making the best steel in the world to teaching the world to count, India was actively contributing to the field of science and technology centuries before the modern laboratories were set up,” said Dr Mashelkar. However, he rued, the world never recognised Indian traditional knowledge. But, he added, Indian scientists in the modern era, with their work, were compelling the world to acclaim India’s traditional science.

S Nambi Narayanan led his team to develop the ‘VIKAS’ engine and helped India leapfrog into the era of PSLV rockets. He also envisioned and worked towards developing a significantly more advanced Cryogenic Engine indigenously, to help India launch heavier satellites to higher orbits. “There is no match to Indian traditional knowledge. Our sages and seers were the pioneers in medicines, astronomy and other technologies. Indian Space and Research Organisation or ISRO named its first satellite after Aryabhatta and second one after Bhaskaracharya to recognise the contribution of both the sages in the field of space technology,” he said

S Nambi Narayanan spotted city-based former ISRO scientist Dr Prakash Mujumdar in the audience and said, “My colleague Dr Mujumdar is here. He was witness to our struggle for liquid propulsion systems.”

Gadkari, who was the chief guest, emphasised on promotion of Indian values and ancient technology. “We are on the path to becoming ‘Vishwaguru’ (world leader). To achieve this goal, we have to do more research on our ancient science and technology. Knowledge is power, and conversion of knowledge into wealth is the future. Conversion of knowledge into wealth is possible only after using spirituality with ancient science,” he observed. He added that it was high time for India to develop an education system based on ancient technology. Swami Vigyananand presided over the event. He shed light on the ancient Indian knowledge systems and how modern-day politics kept people away from studying those.

Dr S Arunan, Director, Mangalyaan Project, ISRO; and Prof Madhusudan Penna, Vice-Chancellor, Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, were the guests of honour. Prof Penna also expressed his thoughts on this occasion. Dr Anita Tidwe compered the event. Dr T S Bhal, former Additional Director General of Police, made introductory remarks and also proposed a vote of thanks.

“Old is gold when useful,” says Gadkari

Nagpur: The Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said, “All that’s old is not gold. Old, which is no longer usable, should be scrapped. Similarly, useful old things are definitely gold and should be accepted.”

Gadkari was speaking at a function to confer awards to former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan and ex-Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Dr Raghunath Maheshelkar, by the World Hindu Congress and Maitree Parivar Sanstha in Nagpur.

According to a report in local Times of India daily, the Union Minister further touched upon Hindutva. In lines with what RSS leaders like Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat often say, Gadkari stressed that people of India, irrespective of their faith, have the same lineage. “There is an image vs reality problem for Hindutva, Hindu and the Hindu way of life. Irrespective of beliefs, it is a value-based way of life. There is a need to research on the Hindu way of life and values. However, due to politics or political limitations, Hindutva is often termed to be a narrow thought. On the contrary, it is pluralistic and tolerant towards others,” said Gadkari.

“When Swami Vivekananda went for the World Religion Congress at Chicago, he did not say that his religion was supreme. Rather, he said whatever may be the practice it ultimately reaches the same God,” added Gadkari.

The ToI report further quoted Gadkari as saying that the dictionary meaning of the world secularism is respect towards all religions and not being non-aligned to faiths. “However, lately non-alliance to religion has become the meaning of secularism. Certain misconceptions that were created during the British Raj also need to be cleared,” said Gadkari.

“Swami Vivekananda had said the 17th century was that of the Mughals, the 19th of the British and 20th of America as superpowers. The 21st century belongs to India. This relates to the Hindu way of life and values which includes people of all faiths — those who pray in mosques or churches,” said Gadkari.

With this development, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation now inches closer to identify hawking and no-hawking zones.

Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Radhakrishnan B is the Chairman of the Committee whereas Commissioner of Police, Representative of Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) or Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), Joint Commissioner of Police, and Medical Officer (Health) of NMC are the Government nominated members on the committee. The government has also nominated 13 members comprising civic activist Kaustav Chatterjee, Sandip Mankar, Aashish Naik, Devendra Mehar, Sachin Punayani, Working Manager of Bank of India, Hawkers’ representatives Abdul Razzaque Qureshi, Gopichand Ambhore, Pramod Mishra, Neha Ochani, Ritu Mohabe, Maroti Patel and Sandeep Guhe.

However, the appointment of Sandip Mankar as representative of the NGO has come under scanner. Being an active BJP office-bearer, the Eknath Shinde led government has nominated Mankar in place of its earlier NGO representative Vinod Taywade, who is now planning to challenge the notification in the court.

Following the Supreme Court directives and subsequent order from the High Court on implementation of the national policy on street vendors, the government issued the notification on October 6.

Formation of a TVC is mandatory under the Street Vendors’ Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Act 2014. But the same was awaited since October 2019. The 18-member TVC comprises seven representatives of hawkers’ associations across the corporation limits, two from NGOs, two from residents’ welfare associations, one representative each from market and traders’ association and nationalised bank.

In October 2021, the government had submitted to the High Court that the TVC had been formed, and informed about the appointment of Vinod Taywade and Kaustav Chatterjee as two members from NGO category.

Now with this development, a senior NMC official from the NMC’s market department said the constituted panel would work out details such as earmarking vending/hawking zones in the city and registering the hawkers and vendors, issuing them identity cards and allocating them areas. According to him, a survey would also be carried out to enumerate hawkers and vendors operating in the corporation limits. After the survey and identification of street vendors, the civic body will collect some fees based on the category of street vending.

Sources, however, said with no open spaces available in commercial areas where hawkers have already thrived and increasing with every passing day, it would be a herculean task for the panel to earmark hawking and no-hawking zones in the city. Nagpur has around 65,000 hawkers, but very few were registered with NMC. In the past, NMC had identified 53 hawkers’ zones. After this notification of forming TVC, a fresh process to enrol hawkers and declaring hawking and no-hawking zones will be initiated.

Nagpur: Unexpected turn of events put the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Supremo Sharad Pawar in the dock. Pawar dodged some harsh questions posed by a group of intellectual Muslims in a programme held at Hotel Tuli International in Nagpur recently, according to a report in a local daily.

According to the report, The NCP President, instead of replying to the questions, preferred to dodge them saying that he would come again on the same forum at a later date. Vidarbha Muslim Intellectuals Forum had organised a programme wherein Sharad Pawar was the chief guest. He was expected to speak on ‘Issues Before Indian Muslims’. Before his speech, some speakers expressed their views.

Most of them appealed to Pawar to understand the problems of Muslims. But, Adv Firdous Mirza posed some tough questions and sought a reply from Pawar. “It is a known fact that Muslims are inclined towards Congress-NCP. Unfortunately, during their regime from 2009- 14, maximum offences were registered against people of our community. We consider you as ours but nobody from your side comes forward and says, ‘You are not wrong’. Are the parties that call themselves secular fooling us? We are confused because a group calls itself secular but does nothing while the present Government in the Centre has done some good things for us like raising the scholarship amount,” said Adv Firdous Mirza.

The report further said that Adv Mirza also pointed out that the Sachar Committee had clearly observed that the condition of Muslims was worse than that of the people belonging to Scheduled Castes. He explained, “We never get our due share in jobs, education. Among minorities, there are some other communities that do not need reservation, but we need it. We agitated in a quiet manner, but nobody responded to it. When the issue of providing reservation to Marathas and Muslims came up, court found Muslim reservation as legal. Despite court calling Maratha reservation illegal, the community got its demand fulfilled, while Muslims are still struggling. In the last two-and-a-half years, we waited for reservations, but in vain!”

Adv Mirza also called for giving more importance to the Urdu medium. He claimed, though students took Urdu language and studied in it, they had to write answers in Marathi. “In competitive examinations and other communications, Urdu should be promoted and we expect your party to take a lead,” he appealed to Pawar.

A stunned Pawar said that he did not expect such a huge crowd from all over Vidarbha for what was supposed to be a ‘closed-door group discussion’. “I have not come here for an election campaign. The issues of any community cannot be discussed in 15 minutes. I agree that the issues are genuine, but we have to sit across, understand the issues, and find solutions to these issues with consensus,” Pawar said.

Pawar agreed with the demand of Urdu getting due importance, but made it clear, “Probably, Maharashtra is leading where Urdu gets due importance. I would suggest looking at Kerala, which has more minority people. Kerala enjoys the highest literacy rate because the minorities there embraced their State language. While respecting other languages, we can not underestimate our State language.” The NCP chief also acknowledged the contribution of Muslims and Urdu in Bollywood’s success.

Dr Aziz Khan, well-known cardiologist, presided over the function. Dr Shakeel Sattar, Raza Baig, Parvez Siddiqui and others shared the dais on this occasion.
