Nagpur: Upset over cancellation of fee hike by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), college managements on Friday stormed the campus of RTMNU on Amravati Road and staged a protest by raising slogans demanding restoration of the fee hike.

Notably, the RTMNU, after 9 years, had decided to increase the fee by 20 percent. According to the government rules and the decision of the High Court and the rising inflation, this decision was worthy in view of the salaries of the employees. But the decision was later kept on hold following strong protests by some student organizations.

Upset over the U-turn by RTMNU on fee hike, the college operators staged a hallabol agitation in front of the university, demanding that the fee hike be kept unchanged. During this protest, it was pointed out that while postponing the decision, the Vice Chancellor did not discuss with the managements or principals of the institutions. This is injustice to colleges and institutions, they said.

The protesting colleges said that in this era of inflation, according to the rules of the government, students have to face many problems including educational facilities and salary of employees. For private colleges, the system runs from the fees received from the students.

The colleges warned of an intense agitation if the decision was not withdrawn soon. A memorandum was also handed over to the Vice-Chancellor on the occasion.

The agitation was participated by the coordinator of the University College Managements Federation, Prof. Diwakar Game, Contact Head Prof Maroti Wagh, Antu Bhivgade, Rajesh Bhoyer, Sanjay Dhanwate, Sandeep Kale, Pandurang Tulskar, Praveen Kadu, Sarika Choudhary, Umesh Tulskar, Balraj, Lohwe, Rajesh Goyal, Borkar, OB Chaudhary, Sunil Shinde, DD Kamdi, Someshwar Chopkar, Praveen Bhange, Uday Tekade and others.

Nagpur resumes cultural life with successful Kala DARSHAN Exhibition

Nagpur : Kala DARSHAN exhibition concluded at Chitanvis Centre. Organizers ‘josh’ rose high because of more than expected footfall of visitors. Paintings and Sculptures of 40 handpicked artists were exhibited and live demonstrations of different fine arts were arranged every day. This three-day event was enriched by the presence of the painters whose works were exhibited. The motto was to let each artist narrate the story behind his creation, says Chandramani Besekar, the Director of the organizing institution, Lord Foundation of Fine Arts. The exhibition was inaugurated on 13th Sep in the august presence of the Director of Cultural Centre for Resources & Training (CCRT), New Delhi, Rishi Kumar Vashishtha. Eminent artists Tuka Jadhav and Harihar Pande were the guests of honor. Prof. Pramod Babu Ramteke and Prof. Kashinath Salve were the Invitee Masters.

On being asked about the monetary response, Besekar candidly accepts that Nagpur still has a long mile to go in art appreciation. Nagpurkars have the taste for good art but its availability at Nagpur was poorly informed and this is where his ‘no profit no loss’ foundation comes in to provide a platform to opportunity-deprived artists. Niranjan Gohane, a participating painter from Nagpur grieves about poor opportunities at Nagpur for those who wish to be full-time painters. Being an IT Professional, Gohane started his own website to overcome the locational disadvantage. But not every artist is such tech savvy and that’s why platforms like this exhibition are a must, at least for hinterlands like Vidarbha, other painters feel. Besekar said the entire exhibition cost was borne from the funds doled by his friends. Suresh Moon, the CMD, and Rajiv Gaikwad, the Director of Lord Foundation of Fine Arts are the people whose efforts made this possible.

Bijay Bilal demonstrated the live landscape water colour painting on the opening day of the exhibition. On the second day, Rajiv Gaikwad, Sanjay More, and Umesh Charole demonstrated Caricature and Cartooning. Kunal Ukey shown a demo of Pottery on closing day. The closing ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by organizing body members and the artists present at the ceremony.

“Our next event will be on Music. Providing platform to young and deserving singers will be the goal. Going to announce soon.”

Nagpur: Acting tough, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), on Friday, bulldozed the new set-up put up at land allocated to Muslim Library (ML) Canteen at Mominpura. Two squads of anti-encroachment unit were deployed to remove the tin sheds erected on the 13,400 sq.ft land.

The civic officials received a complaint about the functioning of a new restaurant in the ML Canteen land and hence action was initiated to clear the encroachment. As per orders of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court dated March 31, 2017, the land allotted to Muslim League was to be utilised for library. However commercial exploitation was being carried out by opening a restaurant that was in violation of norms.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation issued a notice to office bearers of Muslim League to pull down the commercial structure. On Friday, the NMC deployed JCB to demolish the tin sheds that were again put on and cleared the land of encroachment.

According to another report in local English daily, after 94 years, the NMC has taken back possession of the sprawling 13,400 sqft land leased out for Muslim Library at Mominpura in Central Nagpur. The civic body has sealed the library which was closed for a long time, as per the report.

The report further said that the NMC had leased out the land in three phases for the library between 1928 and 1938. But a major portion of the land was utilized for commercial purposes. Also, NMC had not renewed the lease 30 years after the deed. The lease was not renewed citing construction and operation of ML Canteen since 1956 and other commercial activities. But NMC issued the first notice for the violations in 2003. The matter had been pending since then due to various litigations.

A team of NMC Enforcement Department led by Assistant Commissioner Ashok Patil had demolished ML Canteen in May. Right under the nose of NMC Gandhibagh Zone officials and police department, the Canteen was restarted by constructing a temporary structure.

Heavy rains flood Kanhan River; water supply to Nagpur affected

Nagpur: Despite heavy rains, Nagpurians in parts of the city are facing water woes. With rains continuing to lash the catchment area, Kanhan River has swollen because of which Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) are still submerged in sand.

According to Orange City Water (OCW ), water level in Kanhan River is still above 272 metres. Due to flooding, the WTPs are submerged in sand and hence inaccessible. Though rains as such have not stopped, the severity is down. The Water Resources Department (WRD) has conveyed that water level in Kanhan River may recede by Saturday. Hopefully, thereafter, the situation may normalise from Sunday provided there is no rainfall or it’s just light rains.

The incessant rain due to withdrawal of South West Monsoon has also led to sharp inflow in dams and the opening of all the gates of Navegaon-Khairi Dam has further increased the level in Kanhan River. This resulted in submergence of the intake wells of Kanhan Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Timely intervention by the OCW officials led to deployment of swimmers as they inducted trained scuba divers that is paying rich dividends as the strainers of the intake well on the left bank is continuously being cleaned enabling lifting of the river water from Jackwell.

However, the right bank’s dry wells are not accessible due to excessive river water current that brought along tonnes of sand that is deposited around the intake well leading to seizure of the pumping unit. Once water level recedes, OCW is hopeful of starting pumping of water from Saturday evening as scuba divers would be able to clean the system.

As of now, only partial pumping (60%) is on with three pumps (instead of normal five pumps) leading to cuts in daily quota of drinking water in four zones of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura and Lakadganj and Nehru Nagar.

NMRDA was set up by the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the planned development of villages and towns surrounding Nagpur city.

Nearly 750 villages were included in the NMRDA area. NMRDA has implemented building regulations in these areas.
