MUMBAI: Exams for over 40,000 students from medical and other health science courses across Maharashtra, which were scheduled to commence from April 19, have now been postponed to June. Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: As the Second Capital came under curfew-like restrictions to contain the spread of the Covid-19 in the city, a heavy police bandobast was in place to keep a watch and enforce the curbs. The Maharashtra Government imposed 15-day strict restrictions across the state due to an uncontrolled surge in the corona caseload.

A posse of 2500 police personnel would be on streets apart from an additional force of home guards and two companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) to enforce the restrictions.

Apart from enforcing the curbs, city police bosses were concerned over frequent incidents of ransacking of Covid hospitals by unruly relatives over one reason or another. Keeping in all the aspects, nakabandi (blockades) has been in place at 66 sensitive points across the city. All the police stations have been put on alert mode.

According to sources, police personnel will be deployed at Covid hospitals to prevent ruckus and damage to property in the event of relatives taking law into their hands over some dispute with the hospital management. The concerned Station Officer of the police station will review the security arrangements at the Covid hospitals from time to time for further measures. Police have appealed to people to follow the guidelines.

Under the new guidelines issued by the Maharashtra Government, no person will be allowed to be in a public place without a valid reason. All establishments, public spaces, activities and services will remain closed, except for essential services that will remain open between 7 am and 8 pm on working days. Only 25 people will be allowed at marriages. Public transport, including trains and bus services, and essential services like groceries, vegetable shops, fruit vendors, dairies, bakeries, confectioneries, all types of food outlets and public utilities, will be open. Action will be taken against the people who break the restriction guidelines, police sources said.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The additional restrictions called by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to curb the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) outrage in Maharashtra, have evoked mixed response in Nagpur city. Even though Civic and District Administrations have issued clear guidelines, many were seen flouting the Covid norms.

Significant numbers of police personnel were seen on the streets to ensure Nagpurians don’t venture outside sans any valid reason. However, they were seen struggling to convince people who were freely coming out into the streets for minor reasons.

Private vehicles including two-wheelers were seen in large numbers on the city roads as well as national and state highways from Thursday morning.

Public transport including Aapli Bus and autorikshaws remained on the road. Provision stores, vegetable and fruits vendors and pharmaceutical stores, petrol stations were opened.

CM Thackeray on Tuesday said additional restrictions will be imposed for 15 days across the state from Wednesday evening in order to curb the Covid-19 surge.

Section 144 (prohibitory orders) of the Criminal Procedure Code will be in force till the “lockdown-like” restrictions are in place, Thackeray had said.

“We are imposing strict restrictions which will come into effect om 8 pm tomorrow. Section 144 will be imposed in the entire state from tomorrow. I will not term this as lockdown,” he said. The restrictions will be imposed till 7 am on May 1.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: A torrent of Covid-19 cases and enforcement of curfew-like restrictions have triggered a bigger exodus of migrant workforce from Nagpur. Many companies in the city are witnessing the trend helplessly. Nagpur Railway Station, Ganeshpeth Bus Stand and private travel centres are being flocked by migrant workers to return to their native places.

There are around 2500 companies in industrial areas in Mihan, Butibori, Hingna MIDC, Uppalwadi etc. Roughly 40 percent of the workforce in these companies belonged to other states.

In April last year too, hundreds of migrant workers were seen struggling to return to their hometowns as the government had declared a nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus. A repeat situation looks like playing out due to the second wave of the pandemic.

The Nagpur city witnessed a huge traffic of different vehicles crowded with migrants wanting to return to their hometowns especially in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and other states.

Nagpur Railway Station, ST Bus Stand in Ganeshpeth and private travel centres are being crowded by migrant workers to go to their respective destinations. The migrant workers moved in exodus to go to their native places on account of fresh 15-day restrictions. The restrictions have left the migrant workers in dire straits as many of them earn their bread and butter by working in different units. Left with no choice, they decided to go to their native places for some sort of comfort.

At the Madhya Pradesh border, the migrant workers were found eager to leave Maharashtra borders. Many of them were seen riding even on cycles, auto, private and other smaller vehicles. Some preferred walking as they could not find any vehicle due to the heavy rush. Ironically, there are restrictions on those migrants who go to Madhya Pradesh. On the other hand, a horde of people are rushing to Maharashtra without any hurdles.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The President of Vidarbha Parents Association Sandeep Agrawal on Thursday claimed that some private schools are recovering fees from students on the pretext of conducting Class 10 exams even though the State Government has already cancelled the exam and promoted the students. The CBSE has also cancelled Class 10 exams.

Agrawal said that the private schools are interpreting the orders of cancellation of exams wrongfully and confusing the parents for recovering fees from them. “This is a well-planned conspiracy. Many schools conducted exams on Thursday and deprived those students from appearing in the exams online who had not paid the fees. This amounted to violation of Right to Education Act and in contravention of all the government directives. Many schools today opened the exam link and forced the parents to remit the fees. Many parents lodged written complaints with Education Deputy Director Jamdar and ZP Education Officer Wanjari,” Agrawal stated.

Agrawal demanded the Education Department to look into the matter immediately and pass an clear order wherein the schools should not interprete the cancellation of exams and force the parents for fees.

Gadkari’s efforts bear fruit as 7 more companies to produce Remdesivir injections

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Taking serious note of shortage and blackmarketing of Remdesivir injections, the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari took up the issue with the Drug Controller of India. Gadkari also met Union Minister Mansukh Mandviya and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised them of severe shortage of Remdesivir injection in the region.

The untiring efforts of Gadkari bore fruit as the government has permitted seven more pharma companies to produce the vital injection used for treating Covid-19 patients. While raising the issue with the Drug Controller of India Somany, Gadkari discussed the possibility of relaxing the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Act so that all major pharma manufacturing units can produce this injection and make it available at a much cheaper cost. At present, the patent of manufacturing Remdesivir injection is with four companies that are producing the medicines on war-footing. But the supply from these four companies is proving inadequate in view of a surge in corona cases across the country.

Raising the issue with Union Minister Mandviya, he urged him to relax Section 84 of IPR Act by which such permission can be granted to other pharmaceutical companies to ensure enough supply of this life saving drug at cheaper cost without losing any further time. On the lines of the High Court order, Gadkari also directed officers to discard red-tape and provide life saving drugs to every needy patient by easing out the cumbersome procedures.

Subsequently, the Central Government has fast-tracked approvals for seven companies to manufacture the critical Covid-19 drug Remdesivir in India, allowing them to more than double their combined capacity to around 7.8 million vials per month. Mandaviya gave fast-track approval to six manufacturers to set up seven additional sites that could scale up the production capacity of remdesivir by 1 million vials per month.

Covid Centre inaugurated at Nagpur’s National Cancer Institute

Nagpur: “The coming days will be challenging as nobody can predict how many days the Covid-19 will continue to torment people. Keeping in mind this fact, the big hospitals should start operating their own oxygen plants so that the patients don’t face hardships,” said the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday.

Gadkari was speaking after inaugurating Covid Centre at National Cancer Institute (NCI) here. Former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, NCI’s CEO Shailesh Joglekar and Dr Anand Pathak were seated on the dais.

“The Covid Centre initiatially will have 20 ICU and 30 ventilator beds. 100 more beds will be added in the next eight days. Later, a facility of 200 more covid beds will be made available in the NCI apart from the cancer patients who visit the hospital for treatment. Presently, oxygen shortage is being faced in Nagpur. However, arrangements for supply of oxygen have been made as 400 tonnes of oxygen is being supplied from Bhilai. Over 300 beds are being added in GMCH and Mayo Hospital. The oxygen supply to these two hospitals will be made from Visakhapatnam,” Gadkari said adding that efforts are being made to get 1000 more ventilators.

Talking about shortage of Remdesivir injections, Gadkari said that the Central Government has given permission to seven more companies to manufacture the critical Covid-19 drug in India. “I personally met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the concerned Minister Mansukh Mandviya and got the permission. The shortage problem will be sorted out within 304 days. The oxygen plants at GMCH and Mayo are starting shortly. NCI should also make efforts to start its own oxygen plant on war-footing,” Gadkari said.

Speaking on the occasion, Fadnavis said that a large number of covid patients were found in Nagpur in the second wave. There is shortage of beds, medicines, oxygen and ventilators. This led to panic among relatives of patients. But with the help of Gadkari, efforts are being made to provide all Covid facilities to people.

Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, Dr Vikas Mahatme (MP), MLCs Pravin Datke and Parinay Fuke were also present.

Police effect: Ever buzzing Mominpura wears a rare, dreadful look

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: As fresh Covid restrictions came into force to break the virus chain, Nagpur police stepped up measures to control unwanted movement of people on streets.

The police effect could be witnessed, albeit partially, in the Second Capital. However, the ever buzzing Mominpura locality in the city wore a rare and dreadful look as streets were deserted and markets locked down due to strict action by the cops. It is said that Mominpura never sleeps as the locality hustles and bustles with markets and shops open late into night. But the new Covid curbs depicted a different scenario. Markets and shops downed shutters and the shoppers too deserted the streets following a strict vigil by city police led by DCP Zone 3 Lohit Matani, while enforcing the new 15-day restrictions imposed by State Government to break the corona chain.

But the picture in other parts of the city told a different tale. There was usual traffic on roads and violators were spotted roaming on streets on the first day of curfew-like restrictions on Thursday. The city police, barring a few cavalcades and bike marches at some localities, mostly stayed off the roads.

CR cancels pairs of Nagpur-Pune trains due to poor response in Covid time

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: With the Covid-19 wreaking havoc in Nagpur, the number of people planning train travel has dwindled sharply. Owing to poor response from travellers, the Railways has cancelled the running of six pairs of train ex-Pune to Nagpur and Amravati region.

After studying the ticket booking, Railways decided to suspend few trains and deploy them on other routes where demand is outstripping the supply, especially ex-Mumbai to various Eastern states and Northern states.

A communication from Central Railway said that four pairs of trains on Pune-NagpurPune route have been suspended for varying periods till April end or first week of May.

These trains are 02041 Pune-Nagpur (from April 15 to 29) and 02042 NagpurPune (April 16 to 30th); 02239 Pune-Ajni (April 17 to May 1) and 02240 Ajni-Pune (April 18 to May 2); 02117 Pune-Amravati (April 21 to 28) and 02118 Amravati-Pune (April 22 to 29); 02035 Pune-Nagpur (April 16 to 29) and 02036 Nagpur-Pune (April 17 to May 1); 01137 Nagpur-Ahmedabad (April 21 to 28) and 01138 Ahmedabad-Nagpur (April 22 to 28), 0223 Pune-Ajni (April 23 to 30).

The Central Railway was running a number of trains on Nagpur-Pune route owing to huge demand. Also since these trains used to run through Vidarbha region they catered to demand in other smaller towns in the region.

The presence of people from Vidarbha in Pune has increased manifold and that explains the rising demand on the route. But with an outbreak of pandemic now the travellers are switching over to personal vehicles and avoiding travel by railways.

Similarly, in Gujarat also, the second wave has wreaked havoc and daily positive cases are rising. Since the city has a large number of people from Gujarati community the direct service used to receive good patronage. But the virus has disrupted the normal travel routine.

Panicky Nagpurians mob NMC centres for RTPCR test

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Panicky Nagpurians virtually mobbed the NMC centres as the stalled RTPCR tests resumed on Thursday after a gap of three days. The civic body’s centres across the city witnessed heavy rush of people who wanted to undergo tests for confirmation of the dreaded Covid-19. The three-day break in RTPCR test left the people uneasy and they flocked the NMC centres in hundreds when the test resumed.

Until Thursday, the centres were only performing Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) as the four public labs were clearing backlog. But all were not lucky as scores of citizens were turned back from centres as the number of tests reached its threshold. This created a chaotic situation with tempers getting frayed among citizens waiting outside these centres. In a bid to clear the rush, some centres made doctor’s prescription or positive report of a close contact mandatory.

According to NMC sources, the number of genuine citizens was much more than their day’s capacity and there is an urgent need to work in double shifts and increase manpower. Some officials said they received calls from patients whose treatment couldn’t start due to lack of RTPCR tests. At the RPTS testing centre, many had queued up from 5 am to ensure they were among the day’s first 300.

Though the three-day break led to clearing of the backlog, the citizens would still need to wait for a day to get the report from all labs except, CSIR-NEERI. Samples from RTPS centre are processed at NEERI lab and the results are given the same day. At PWD quarters in Raj Nagar, the queue extended onto the road. The centre had put up a pandal for citizens but many had to stand as no chairs were provided.
